Application of Combined Technique of LC/MS to Modern Research of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract:The combined technique of LC/MS is growing into one of the most powerful analytical techniques for the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since it combines the high efficiency of LC separation with the confident structural identification of mass spectrometric detection. By exemplifying the results of the researches which have recently been carried out by the authors of this article in some widely used medicinal herbs, this article makes a brief comment on the application of LC/MS to the following four aspects in the modern research of TCM: the rapid screening of TCM chemical elements, the identification of the species of medicinal plants, the quality control and the in vivo metabolism of TCM medicinal materials. In addition, it analyzes the main reasons that hold back the widespread application of this technique and puts forward measures for it.
