Text and Happiness:Female reading in the view of Audience Theory

Abstract:Reading is the production process of meaning. The joy of reading depends on the relationship between the text and readers. Through the interpretation of idol dramas and female stars, this paper suggests that how controversial actresses shape themselves in the media is an open structure. In a private space, this text provides a problem of remodeling womens own identity under the control of male discourses. In public spaces, because of the "rebellious" images of female stars, women often gain the moral superiority by means of criticism. In the analysis of idol dramas, the papers finds that at the end of the story, mens discourse power always wins a strong return and the rebellious heroine begins to lead a "regularized" life. The study of female reading behavior (or viewing behavior) should be re-integrated into the broader and more critical media sociology.
