Abstract:Beam-string (frame-string) structures have been adopted in several large-span structures in China. However, theoretical analysis of this kind of structures has not been well established. Some problems in the design and construction of beam-string structures are presented and discussed including the pre-stress distribution of each element corresponding to the initial geometry and the simulation of construction process. First, the equilibrium matrix theory is extended to the analysis of hybrid spatial structures composed of beams, bars and cables and a general form of the equilibrium matrix of two-node beam element and bar element is also derived. Using its total equilibrium matrix, a small beam-string structure is analyzed and only one independent self-stress mode is obtained. Secondly, another method, named as local analysis method, is presented where the whole structure is divided into two parts: the upper structure and the lower structure. It can also be used to obtain the initial pre-stress distribution and the zero-state geometry of the upper structure. Numerical examples are given to verify the methods.
Quantitative control of idealized analysis models of thin designs

Abstract:When preparing a design model for engineering analysis, model idealization is often used, where defeaturing, and/or local dimension reduction of thin regions, are carried out. This simplifies the analysis, but quantitative estimates of the idealization error, the analysis error caused by this idealization, are necessary if the results are to be of practical use. The paper focuses on a posteriori estimation of such idealization error, via both a theoretical analysis and practical algorithms. Our approach can compute bounds for the errors induced by dimension reduction, defeaturing or both in combination. Performance of our error estimate is demonstrated using examples.
Finite Element Modelling of Thin-Walled Members in Overall Stability Analysis

Abstract:In the overall stability analysis of thin-walled members employing the general purpose finite element(FE) softwares,the members are generally modelled using the thin-walled beam elements or the thin shell elements.The modelling details of these two FE models were presented,and a new thin shell element model,capable of prohibiting the local buckling modes in the overall buckling analysis,was proposed.The two types of FE models were then adopted into the buckling analysis of thin-walled members,including the beams and columns with doubly and singly symmetric sections,beam-columns,tapered beams.The comparisons of the results from FE analyses,analytical solutions and literature show that the proposed thin shell element model is superior to the existing models of this type;the thin-walled beam element of ANSYS is not applicable to the flexural-torsional buckling analysis of thin-walled beams and beam-columns of mono-symmetric section,and significant error may arise in buckling analysis of tapered beams using this element.The results from the presented shell element model can also be used as the benchmark results in verifying the buckling theory of thin-walled members.The outcome of this study may be helpful for modelling thin-walled members in overall stability analysis using general FE packages,not limited to ANSYS.

Abstract:Based on the problems discussed in Hangzhou and Shanghai, some viewpoints on stress analysis design, plasticity design, the self-limiting property of peak stress and linear treatment of the finite element analysis result were presented in this paper. With the stress properties and its acting scope, it can be concluded that the fundamental properties of peak stress are self-limiting and localizing, which are in conform to what indicated in ASME code "it does not cause any noticeable distortion". The importance of linear treatment method lies in that it is the most effective method to categorize peak stress. A general method to determinate the location and direction of the checking line was also proposed

Abstract:The implementation of the primary structure method in design by analysis of pressure vessel is discussed. With two examples of axisymmetric structure of pressure vessel, flat head-cylindrical shell joint and flange-ellipsoidal head joint, the primary structure is constructed according to the principle of this method with ANSYS. By comparing the stress intensity and deformation of the primary structure with that of the original structure, the primary and secondary stress along the stress classification line can be clearly distinguished by using the primary structure method. It has great application value in dealing with stress classification in the elastic stress analysis method. The results also show that a variety of reasonable primary structures can be constructed based on the same original structure, and the primary structure method has some flexibility.

Abstract:In view of the large numbers of unbalanced excavation in the current engineering,a 2D finite element analysis model built on ANSYS is proposed in the paper.The stress and strain of the supporting structure have been calculated in the conditions of different depth of excavation,over loading and soil distribution,and also some basic rules are summed up.Finally,a project is under the optimization of design.The calculated results show that both the analysis and design optimization are feasible,so it’s valuable to the practice.

Abstract:As usual, the numerical computation of structural reanalysis is the main task in the optimal procedure of the structures. The number of structural reanalysis should be reduced to raise optimum efficiency, which is achieved by a approximate reanalysis method named \!behaviour model technique\. The method makes the number of structural reanalysis to be linear with the design variables. In addition, the thickness distribution of thin plate optimization, offered in other researches, is of stepped shape, not smoothed. In this paper, the continuous thickness distribution can be obtained after optimization by use of virtual laminated element, as is more reasonable. The following classical examples will be offered to demonstrate the efficiency and practicality of the method presented.

Abstract:Design is a high-level and complex thinking activity of human beings, using existing knowledge and technology to solve problems and create new things. With the rise and development of intelligent manufacturing, design has increasingly reflected its importance in the product life cycle. Firstly, the concept and connotation of complex product design is expounded systematically, and the different types of design are discussed. The four schools of design theory are introduced, including universal design, axiomatic design, TRIZ and general design. Then the research status of complex product design is analyzed, such as innovative design, digital design, modular design, reliability optimization design, etc. Finally, three key scientific issues worthy of research in the future are indicated, and five research trends of “newer, better, smarter, faster, and greener” are summarized, aiming to provide references for the equipment design and manufacturing industry.
Advances in "design by Analysis" Methods for Pressure Vessels

Abstract:Various Design by Analysis methods were reviewed for use in the design of pressure vessels.The elastic Design by Analysis methods focus on stress classification approaches,such as the Stress Equivalent Linearization,the Two-Step Approach,the Primary Structure method,the Elastic Compensation method,and the GLOSS R-Node method.Inelastic Design by Analysis methods overcome the disadvantages of the stress classification methods,and have been organized into the European pressure vessel standard and the ASME Code.A calculated example demonstrates the differences of the elastic and inelastic methods.The results show that inelastic methods are more appropriats for complex pressure vessel components.
Theory on the Design of Finite Element Parametric Based on ANSYS

Abstract:By using the ANSYS Parametric Analysis, the FEA pro-cess including creating FEA model and analysis steps is discussed. A practical parametric FEA model is established and stress analysis is done by using our method. The results show that this method is very efficient in FEA of a structure. Based on the idea of the structure parametric design method in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a method for building a parametric FEA Model by using parametric design language is provided. By using this method, the FEA model can be easily create by adjusting several geometric parameters and the process of FEA is automatically executed. The remarkable effect of this method is that it is more convenient for repeated FEA for a similar model and analysis of series of products. Furthermore, the efficiency is improved and the time for product design will be shortened greatly.

Abstract:Some problems on equivalent linearization of stresses calculated by FEA were studied,including the selection of the stress classification line and coordinate system,the linearization of transverse shear forces,the reason why membrane plus bending stress intensity is larger than total stress intensity,the treatment of the normal stress along thickness and the shear stress parallel to the mid-surface etc.Through analyzing some general phenomenon arising in several typical examples,a modified method for equivalent linearization of stresses was proposed.

Abstract:Aiming at the deficiency of the current steel structures design code, the necessity of advanced analysis and design for steel structures is emphasized, and the basic principles and methods of the advanced analysis are discussed. Based on the improved plastic hinge method, some factors about structural overall stability analysis and design such as the basic element, the initial imperfection, the joint connection rigidity, the material plasticity and second order analysis are analyzed in this paper. The comparison between the current limit state partial factor method and the modified plastic hinge analysis method is also presented. The calculation example results indicate that the method presented is efficient, exact and robust for the steel structure stability analysis and design.

Abstract:Design by analysis is one of the main methods for nuclear power equipment design.The structure integrity was judged using the safety-factor based on deterministic approach providing that safety margins of input parameters are sufficient in the design by analysis.In practical engineering,nondeterministic variables exist,such as geometry,material properties,occurrence of beyond design basic loads etc.Based on the design by analysis,the reliability and optimal analysis methods were introduced in the basic design or assessment by considering uncertainty of the subjective input variables (such as stress linearization paths).The transition cone of steam generator which is a typical structure of nuclear key component was chosen as a research case in this study.First,the sensitivity analysis was carried out to select the parameters which have the greatest influence on the stress linearization path,and then the best path was optimized by optimal analysis.The methods used in this study provide some suggestions for the selection of stress linearization path for engineering design.Meanwhile,these methods have a positive meaning to the application of reliability theory in the design by analysis of ASME codes and standards.

Abstract:Topology optimization design of continuum structures that can take account of stress and displacement constraints simultaneously is difficult to solve at present. The main obstacle lies in that, the explicit function expressions between topological variables and stress or displacement constraints can not be obtained using homogenization method or variable density method. Furthermore, large quantities of design variables in the problem make it hard to deal with by the formal mathematical programming approach. In this paper, a smooth model of topology optimization for continuum structures is established which has weight objective considering stress and displacement constraints based on the independent-continuous topological variable concept and mapping transformation method proposed by Sui Yunkang and Yang Deqing. Moreover, the approximate, explicit expressions are given between topological variables and stress or displacement constraints. The problem is well solved by using dual programming approach, and the proposed element deletion criterion implements the inversion of topology variables from the discrete to the continuous. Numerical examples verify the validity of proposed method.
An Approach to Automated Conversion from Design Feature Model to Analysis Feature Model

Abstract:An approach to automatically converting a design feature model to an analysis feature model for downstream finite element analysis is proposed. The analysis feature model is a mixed-dimensional model with shell features representing thin regions and solid features representing thick regions. In the approach, the design feature model is first decomposed into a set of remnants of additive features, each of which represents part of an additive feature's volume that remain in the final volume of the design model. The remnant of each additive feature is then decomposed into swept bodies and non-swept bodies. After that, the thin regions of each swept body are effectively recognized based on its sketch information. These detected thin regions can be wrongly recognized, which, together with potentially missing ones are thus detected and corrected by a synthesization process. Finally, the analysis features and their relative interfaces are generated, which ultimately gives the corresponding analysis feature model to the input design feature model. Experimental results are also shown to demonstrate the proposed method's effectiveness.

Abstract:This paper describes a recent technical innovation in design, called "Design Through Analysis" led by the authors. In the new approach, finite element methods are used to simulate global behavior and detailed structural strength. The global analysis and local analysis are integrated to determine the governing limit-states and optimize the design. The advantage of using such advanced engineering is a substantial, reduction of project CAPEX and OPEX.The paper presents the following technical developments: (1) Design Through Analysis (DTA) concepts, (2) non-linear finite element simulations of global behavior and detailed local strength, (3) limit-state design criteria, (4) vortex-induced vibrations and fatigue (5) design for trawling loads, (6) wall-thickness design based on LCC (Life-Cycle-Cost) optimization, (7) reliability-based calibration of safety factors and inspection planning, (8) design of in-field flowlines.
