Abstract:A plenty of uniform and spherical ruthenium nanoparticles were prepared by the adsorption–bioreduction method using the Cacumen Platycladi extract and supported on the activated carbon which was modified with nitric acid. The catalytic performance of as-prepared Ru/AC–HNO3 catalysts was investigated in the liquid phase hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. Different characterization techniques of BET, XRD, TEM, and FTIR were applied to understand the origin of the catalytic activity. With a comprehensive analysis of the experimental results, we can draw a conclusion that the higher dispersion of ruthenium nanoparticles and the smaller particle size give rise to the results which indicate a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic performance in comparison with the non-modified AC samples.

Abstract:Ruthenium-based catalysts were prepared by a biogenic method via Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract and tested in the liquid phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride to the corresponding succinic anhydride. The reaction conditions were optimized by varying the Ru loading, reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, reaction time and organic solvents to achieve the superb catalytic performance. Reusability tests and comparison with commercial catalysts were also studied on the biosynthesized Ru-based catalysts. Furthermore, a variety of characterization techniques, such as TEM, HRTEM, EDS and XPS showed the effectively introduction of ruthenium nanoparticles into the carbon supports. The analyses of FTIR and TG confirmed that the plant extract served as both reducing and protecting agents.. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous ruthenium containing carbon (Ru-OMC) catalyst with semi-embedded uniform Ru particle distribution was synthesized by using RuCl3/SBA-15 as a hard template. The sucrose both acts as the carbon precursor and Ru3+ stabilizer. The use of RuCl3/SBA-15 makes more exposed Ru surface available for reactants. The turnover frequency of the Ru-OMC catalyst for hydrogenation of benzene reaches ca. 35,000h−1 at 4MPa, 110°C, which is 12 times improvement compared with that of Ru/OMC catalyst prepared by impregnation. The Ru-OMC catalyst can be recycled more than 9 times without much loss of performance and aggregation of Ru nanoparticles.

Abstract:Ruthenium,one of the platinum group metals,has drawn much attention due to its catalytic behavior,hardness,electrical conductivity and density.Ruthenium particles are usually prepared on a small scale by the polyol process,however,the size of the obtained ruthenium nanoparticles is most below 10 nm.In this work,ruthenium particles about 200 nm in diameter were obtained in aqueous solution by using ammonium formate as the reducing agent.Tohave a better control of particle's size and shape,the effects of PVP,mixing mode,reaction temperature,solution pH and calcination temperature were investigated.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for the synthesis of ruthenium nanoparticles via the reduction of ruthenium nitrosyl nitrate with sodium borohydride in flow 3D helical reactors in the absence of capping ligands. Manipulating the pH-speciation of the ruthenium precursor and the fluid dynamics of the flow system allows for the synthesis of small nanoparticles and the tuning of average size with narrow size distributions (2–4 ± 0.5 nm). A mechanism is proposed for the NP synthesis involving the formation of a stable ruthenium nitrite complex from the ruthenium nitrosyl nitrate precursor in the presence of sodium hydroxide, which avoids unwanted metal oxide hydrolysis or precipitation. In contrast, more conventional metal precursors such as chlorides or nitrates easily hydrolyse under basic conditions forming metal oxides or precipitates. We also demonstrate the need of achieving fast mixing of reactants (<50 ms) to enable a homogeneous nucleation under such fast reduction kinetics. This work is a demonstration of the need of combining reaction chemistry and engineering approaches on the synthesis of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Ruthenium is widely used as catalyst, magnetic recording and electrode materials. In this study, high-purity (≥99.995 wt%) ruthenium sponge was synthesized from crude ruthenium (≤99.9 wt%) by chemical refining technique. Initially, crude Ru was transformed into H 2 RuCl 6 by distilling treatment. The H 2 RuCl 6 was, then, added with NH4Cl powder to precipitate (NH 4 ) 2 RuCl 6 powder. Afterward, the (NH 4 ) 2 RuCl 6 powder was ignited in air and transformed into RuO 2 . Finally, RuO 2 was changed to Ru by hydrogen reduction method. Impurities included in the starting Ru powder were eliminated after distillation and precipitation treatments. As-obtained ruthenium particles were spherical-like agglomeration, the average size was about 6 μm and the powder density was 11.83 g/cm 3 . The details of chemical transforming mechanisms in the refining process were described.

Abstract:We report a facile and general approach for preparing ultrafine ruthenium nanocatalysts by using a plasma-assisted synthesis at <100 degrees C. The resulting Ru nanoparticles are monodispersed (typical size 2nm) and remain that way upon loading onto carbon and TiO2 supports. This gives robust catalysts with excellent activities in both organosilane oxidation and the oxygen evolution reaction.

Abstract:We straightforwardly synthesized nine different types of ruthenium nanoparticles by using a series of ruthenium metal precursors and ionic liquids. All the materials went for XRD, XPS and SAXS analysis, before going to CO2 hydrogenation reaction as catalyst. As per the results, it was clear that the coordination between anions of ionic liquids and ruthenium nanoparticles played an important role with respect to their catalytic performance in CO2 hydrogenation reaction. Surprisingly, less coordinated and large [DAMI][TfO] mediated ruthenium nanoparticles gave better results over other developed catalytic systems. Narrow size well distributed and stable insitu generated ruthenium nanoparticles were synthesized and found highly active in terms of formic acid formed during the CO2 hydrogenation reaction to other ionic liquid immobilized standing ruthenium nanoparticles. Low catalyst loading, ligand free approach, simple reaction protocol, easy product isolation steps and seven times catalyst recycling are major outcomes of this proposed work.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Ruthenium is widely used as magnetic recording and electrode materials. In this study, high-purity micro-spherical Ru particles were synthesized from crude ruthenium sequential by distilling, precipitation, dry spraying and ignition. Impurities in the starting Ru powders were eliminated by distilled and precipitated treatments. The morphology and size of as-synthesized Ru particles were controlled by dry spraying and ignition processes. The influences of heating rate in ignited treatment on the morphology and size of Ru particles were investigated. The purity of as-synthesized Ru particles was higher than 99.995 wt%, and the average size was about 12 gm. It should be noted that the powder technology in this study could be applied to synthesize other metals particles with high-purity requirement. (C) 2015 The Society of Powder Technology Japan. Abstract:Carboxymethylated chitosan (CMCts) protected ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) were synthesized by γ-radiation-induced reduction of metal ions at room temperature. The characteristics of RuNPs/CMCts composites prepared under different experimental conditions have been investigated by means of TEM, XPS and TGA. The results indicated that the average size of RuNPs increases as the concentration of precursor decreases. Narrowly distributed nanocomposites have been obtained when low molecular weight CMCts (LM-CMCts, Mn=4400Da) was utilized as stabilizer. The TEM images demonstrated the RuNPs prepared in a wide pH range of 4.5–12.3 can be dispersed uniformly in the alkalic CMCts solution for more than 2months with the average particle sizes of 1.0–3.0nm. XPS spectrum confirmed the ruthenium ions have been reduced to metal atoms by irradiation. TGA curves indicated that RuNPs/CMCts composites exhibited good thermal stability at temperature less than 200°C and strong interactions existed between the metal nanoparticles and stabilizer molecules.

The surface of SiO2 was double modified by γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) and salicylaldehyde, so that Ru3+ grew uniformly on the surface of modified SiO2 and reduced to form a stable and durable layer of Ru metal. Then the hard template SiO2 was corroded by chemical etching to obtain Ru-HNSs hollow spheres. The results show that the diameter of SiO2 microspheres was about 300nm, the wall thickness of Ru-HNSs was about 3nm, and the diameter was about 100nm.

Abstract:Introduction: In this study, a continuous flow reactor was used to synthesize Ru nanoparticles with a well-distributed size and good stability. The effects of reactant dilution and flow rate on the synthesis were investigated, and it was found that optimization of these parameters was critical in obtaining small-sized Ru nanoparticles using a solution of 0.00025 M RuCl3.3H2O and 0.001M NaBH4 at a flow rate of 30mL/h. The Ru nanoparticles obtained were coated with CTAB surfactant, which was confirmed by TEM and PSD studies Method: The interaction between the surfactant and the nanoparticles was also confirmed by FTIR analysis. The synthesized Ru nanoparticles were then tested for their catalytic activity in high-pressure alkene hydrogenation and were found to be effective in producing the corresponding hydrogenated products in good yields. Furthermore, the catalytic effect of Ru nanoparticles was utilized for the synthesis of two natural products, brittonin A and dehydrobrittonin A. Both products were successfully isolated in measurable yields. Result: This synthesis protocol had several advantages, including low catalyst loading, no use of additives, wide substrate scope, simple product separation, and catalyst recovery up to 8 times. Conclusion: Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of continuous flow reactor technology for synthesizing stable and well-distributed nanoparticles, and the effectiveness of Ru nanoparticles as catalysts in various chemical reactions. The study's findings have important implications for the development of more efficient and sustainable chemical synthesis protocols.

Abstract:Ruthenium nanoparticles with a core-shell structure formed by a core of metallic ruthenium and a shell of ruthenium carbide have been synthesized by a mild and easy hydrothermal treatment. The dual structure and composition of the nanoparticles have been determined by synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. According to depth profile synchrotron XPS and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, metallic ruthenium species predominate in the inner layers of the material, ruthenium carbide species being located on the upper surface layers. The ruthenium carbon catalysts presented herein are able to activate both CO2 and H2, exhibiting exceptional high activity for CO2 hydrogenation at low temperatures (160-200 °C) with 100% selectivity to methane, surpassing by far the most active Ru catalysts reported up to now. On the basis of catalytic studies and isotopic 13CO/12CO2/H2 experiments, the active sites responsible for this unprecedented activity can be associated with surface ruthenium carbide (RuC) species, which enable CO2 activation and transformation to methane via a direct CO2 hydrogenation mechanism. Both the high activity and the absence of CO in the gas effluent confer relevance to these catalysts for the Sabatier reaction, a chemical process with renewed interest for storing surplus renewable energy in the form of methane.

Abstract:Monodispersed spherical Ru powders are essential for fabricating high-performance Ru sputtering targets, which have applications in very-large-scale integration circuits and magnetic recording devices. However, the synthesis of such powders remains a major challenge. Here, we reported the synthesis of monodispersed spherical Ru powders through controlling the molar ratio of SO 4 2− to Ru 3+ in urea homogeneous precipitation solution and the annealing conditions. Without the addition of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 into the reaction solution, only gel-like precipitation particles were obtained. Once introducing (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 into the reaction solution and controlling the molar ratio of SO 4 2− to Ru 3+ between 0.50 and 1.00, monodispersed spherical precursor powders were obtained. The nucleation and growth of monodispersed spherical precursor particles in solution were found to conform to LaMer's model. Through controlled annealing at 450 °C in a hydrogen atmosphere, the obtained metallic Ru powder with an average particle size of 135 nm inherited the spherical morphology and excellent dispersity from the monodispersed spherical precursor powders. These results and findings would deepen the understanding of the preparation of monodispersed Ru and Ru-like powders.

Abstract:Ruthenium nanocrystals with both a face-centered cubic ( fcc) structure and well-controlled facets are attractive catalytic materials for various reactions. Here we report a simple method for the synthesis of Ru octahedral nanocrystals with an fcc structure and an edge length of 9 nm. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of 4.5 nm Rh cubes as seeds to facilitate the heterogeneous nucleation and overgrowth of Ru atoms. We choose Rh because it can resist oxidative etching under the harsh conditions for Ru overgrowth, it can be readily prepared as nanocubes with edge lengths less than 5 nm, and its atoms have a size close to that of Ru atoms. During the seed-mediated growth, the atomic packing of Ru overlayers follows an fcc lattice, in contrast to the conventional hexagonal close-packed ( hcp) lattice associated with bulk Ru. The final product takes an octahedral shape, with the surface enclosed by {111} facets. Our in situ measurements suggest that both the octahedral shape and the fcc crystal structure can be well preserved up to 400 °C, which is more than 100 °C higher than what was reported for Ru octahedral nanocages. When utilized as catalysts, the Ru octahedral nanocrystals exhibited 4.4-fold enhancement in terms of specific activity toward oxygen evolution relative to hcp-Ru nanoparticles. We also demonstrate that Ru{111} facets are more active than Ru{100} facets in catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction. Altogether, this work offers an effective method for the synthesis of Ru nanocrystals with an fcc structure and well-defined {111} facets, as well as enhanced thermal stability and catalytic activity. We believe these nanocrystals will find use in various catalytic applications.
