Abstract:Pt‐based alloys are considered the universal choice among electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, improving the electrocatalytic efficiency with the use of minimal amount of Pt is very challenging. A new strategy has been developed to fabricate a “double nanoporous” structure, in which nanoporous PtFe alloy (np‐PtFe) is embedded in nanoporous graphene (NPG), through in situ etching and acid leaching treatments. The np‐PtFe/NPG‐700 served as an effective bifunctional catalyst for both HER and ORR, exhibiting higher activity and stability than 20% Pt/C. Theoretical calculations reveal that the graphene nanopores not only play a vital role in improving the stability of the nanoporous PtFe alloy but also downshift the d‐band center of the PtFe alloy, thus improving the catalytic activity. The double nanoporous structure also provides numerous diffusion channels, which facilitated the mass and charge transport during HER and ORR.
Ruthenium nanoparticles loaded on N/P co-doped carbon sphere derived from sphere cross-linked hydrogel for highly improved hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in electrolysis water is crucially significant but challenging. With enhanced hydrogen bonding energy as well as a reasonable price, ruthenium-based catalysts are one of the promising catalytic materials to replace Pt for HER. In this work, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon materials supporting ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru/NPC) are prepared by two pyrolysis processes and then used as a HER efficient catalyst. In alkaline media, Ru/NPC-2 requires only a low overpotential of 64 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and shows a small Tafel slope of about 76 mV dec-1 and long-lasting stability. The introduction of Ru effectively increases the electrochemical active area of the catalytic material as well as promotes sufficient contact between the surface of the catalyst and the electrolyte, thereby exposing more active sites. In addition, the normalized results show that the synergistic effect among phosphorus, nitrogen, and ruthenium effectively enhances the intrinsic activity of active sites. Therefore, Ru/NPC exhibits outstanding HER catalytic performance. This work fully demonstrates the advantages of non-metallic element-doped carbon supports in enhancing the activity of ruthenium, and has an important reference for the subsequent development of carbon-supported high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Abstract:For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution, the state-of-the-art platinum(Pt)-based electrocatalysts showed a bunch of drawbacks including high cost, poor durability and scarcity, making it essential to develop Pt-free electrocatalysts. In this work, we employed a double-solvent approach to prepare a ruthenium(Ru)-dispersed metal-organic framework composite, which was further pyrolyzed to obtain a novel Ru/C electrocatalyst with a Ru loading of 2.7 wt %. The target electrocatalyst showed ultrahigh activity for HER in 1 M KOH that outperformed commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 wt %) with an overpotential of 27 mV @ 25 mA cm(-2) and 86 mV @ 100 mA cm(-2). This work not only provides a promising electrocatalyst for highly efficient HER in alkaline solution, but also offers a double-solvent strategy for the fabrication of various metal/carbon composites with uniform distribution of ultrafine metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:Noble metal platinum has good catalytic performance as a hydrogen evolution reaction（ HER）catalyst,but its low stability and high cost seriously hinder its large-scale application. The low-cost metal ruthenium has become a good substitute for platinum because it is similar to the metal hydrogen bond of platinum. Using graphene oxide as a carrier and RuCl3solution as a ruthenium source,Ru nanoparticles（ Ru/r GO catalyst） uniformly loaded on reduced graphene oxide（ r GO） are successfully obtained by freeze-drying technology and high temperature reduction treatment,and it has an average particle size of only 1. 6 nm. An overpotential is only 55 m V at a current density of-100 A/m2. Its performance superior to commercial Pt/C catalysts. This study provides important guidance for the development of non-noble metal HER catalysts.

Abstract:For all electrocatalysts (even Pt), the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environments are more sluggish by a factor of two to three compared to those in acidic solutions. Here, we demonstrated the preparation of a novel ruthenium/nitrogen-doped carbon (Ru/NC) electrocatalyst supported by graphite foam, in which abundant, singly dispersed Ru atoms were chelated to a nitrogendoped carbon matrix. In a 1 M KOH aqueous solution, the resultant Ru/NC electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic HER activity with an extremely low overpotential of only 21 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and an excellent mass current density as high as 8 A mgRu(-1) at 100 mV, which is superior to the values for reported electrocatalysts (overpotentials of > 50 mV at 10 mA cm(-2)), even Pt catalysts (overpotential of similar to 36 mV at 10 mA cm(-2)). Importantly, the inherent turnover frequency (TOF) value (per Ru atom) of the Ru/NC electrocatalyst reaches 4.55 s(-1), which is 3.2 times higher than that of the Pt catalyst (1.41 s(-1)). Electrochemical analyses and structural characterization revealed that atomically dispersed Ru is responsible for the outstanding HER activity of the Ru/NC electrocatalyst because of a substantially accelerated Volmer step. The outstanding HER performance gives the Ru/NC electrocatalyst promising potential for practical hydrogen production applications.
Supramolecular Anchoring Strategy for Facile Production of Ruthenium Nanoparticles Embedded in N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanospheres for Efficient Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:Because of the favorable mass transport and increased available active sites, the rational design and preparation of porous carbon structures are essential but still challenging. Herein, a novel and facile supramolecular anchoring strategy was developed to achieve the embedding of ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles in N-doped mesoporous carbon nanospheres through pyrolyzing the precursor formed by coordination assembly between metal ions and zinc gluconate (G(Zn)). Featuring rich hydroxyl groups, the G(Zn) can effectively chelate Ru3+ via metal-oxygen bonds to form 3D supramolecular nanospheres, and meanwhile, mesopores in carbon nanospheres were expanded after subsequent pyrolysis thanks to the volatilization of zincic species at high temperature. As a demonstration, the best-performing catalyst displayed extraordinary activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a small overpotential of 43 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 39 mV/dec, which was superior to that of commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. Abstract:It is still a challenge to develop the high-efficiency noble metal-based electrocatalyst with good dispersion and durability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in wide pH range. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) coated ultrafine ruthenium phosphides (RuP2) nanoparticles catalyst with a facile method. With the help of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), the uniform RuP2 nanoparticles with ultrafine size of about 3 nm are well dispersed on the surface of the NC. The directed coordination between EDTA and Ru ion may be responsible for the excellent structure. Benefiting from the superior electrical conductivity of NC carrier and the reduced resistance of electrons to the active site, the prepared ultrafine RuP2@NC demonstrates the obviously enhanced electrocatalytic activity for HER, which results in higher current density and lower overpotentials (99, 98 and 196 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M KOH and 1 M PBS, respectively). The stability is also very good due to the close integration between ultrafine RuP2 and NC. This work provides a new view to rationally design and synthesize the highly effective, stable and great dispersion of phosphide-based electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:The development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for sustainable electrochemical water splitting and its practical application. However, the inappropriate binding with H* and sluggish reaction kinetics limit their overall HER performance, especially in alkaline electrolyte. Herein, we report a robust and high active HER electrocatalyst with optimized metal-H* interaction and low water dissociation energy barrier through interatomic d-p orbital hybridization. The Ru nanoparticles with mean size down to 1.7 nm are anchored on two-dimension nitrogen-doped carbon nanocone arrays via a facile aqueous-organic interfacial method. This unique architecture induces strong interaction between Ru and the carbon support. Electrons are transferred from Ru to the N-doped carbon, causing a shift of charge distribution and modified surface properties of Ru. Furthermore, the newly emerged Ru-N bonds endow the catalyst with high structure robustness. As a result, the catalyst exhibits superior HER performances in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, with low overpotentials (31 and 29 mV at 10 mA cm−2 respectively), high H2 turn over frequency (2.20 s−1 at the overpotential of 25 mV) and excellent durability (10,000 cycles). The density functional theory calculations reveal that the boosted HER activity can be attributed to the downshift of the d-band center of Ru, which lowers the |ΔG(H*)| and accelerates the H-OH cleavage.

Abstract:The control in synthesis and composition plays a vital role in exploring cost-effective efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting. This paper reported a glycerol-assisted solvothermal strategy to synthesize Ru-based electrocatalyst (Ru-G/CC), in-situ growing Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon cloth (CC). The optimal Ru-G/CC exhibits a boosted HER activity (overpotential of 40 mV @ 10 mA cm−2, Tafel slope 76 mV dec−1), surpassing benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C; experimental characterization and DFT calculations verified that Ru NPs with a mixed amorphous/crystalline structure in Ru-G/CC effectively decrease the reaction energy barrier in HER. Also, the hydrothermally derived Ru-H2O/CC-350 exhibited a high electrocatalytic OER activity (overpotential of 270 mV @ 10 mA cm−2, Tafel slope 63 mV dec−1), exceeding the commercial RuO2. This work provides a successful story via regulating synthetic parameters to design efficient and stable Ru-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.
A Sustainable Route to Ruthenium Phosphide (RuP)/Ru Heterostructures with Electron‐Shuttling of Interfacial Ru for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:In the RuP/Ru heterostructure, the electron‐deficient Ru atom in the Ru phase is better able to adsorb and dissociate H2O to form H*, whereas the electron‐gaining Ru in RuP provides optimized H* adsorption to generate H2. The low H* spillover energy barrier between Ru atoms across the RuP/Ru interface facilitates hydrogen transfer from one side of the interface to the other, resulting in efficient non‐acidic HER kinetics. Ruthenium (Ru) is a promising electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), despite suffering from low activity in non‐acidic conditions due to the high kinetic energy barrier of H2O dissociation. Herein, the synthesis of carbon nanosheet‐supported RuP/Ru heterostructures (RuP/Ru@CNS) from a natural polysaccharide is reported and demonstrates its behavior as an effective HER electrocatalyst in non‐acidic conditions. The RuP/Ru@CNS exhibits low overpotential (106 mV at 200 mA·cm−2) in alkaline electrolyte, exceeding most reported Ru‐based electrocatalysts. The electron shuttling between Ru atoms at the RuP/Ru interface results in a lowered energy barrier for H2O dissociation by electron‐deficient Ru atoms in the pure Ru phase, as well as optimized H* adsorption of electron‐gaining Ru atoms in the neighboring RuP. A low H* spillover energy barrier between Ru atoms at the RuP/Ru interface further boosts HER kinetics. This study demonstrates a sustainable method for the fabrication of efficient Ru‐based electrocatalysts and provides a more detailed understanding of interface effects in HER catalysis.

Abstract:Abstract Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts is crucial for the electrochemical production of pure and clean hydrogen. For practical applications, an economical and facile method of producing catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential. Here, we report ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles uniformly deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an efficient HER catalyst. The catalyst exhibits the small overpotentials of 13 and 17 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 in 0.5 M aq. H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M aq. KOH, respectively, surpassing the commercial Pt/C (16 mV and 33 mV). Moreover, the catalyst has excellent stability in both media, showing almost “zeroloss” during cycling. In a real device, the catalyst produces 15.4% more hydrogen per power consumed, and shows a higher Faradaic efficiency (92.28%) than the benchmark Pt/C (85.97%). Density functional theory calculations suggest that Ru–C bonding is the most plausible active site for the HER.

Abstract:The development of a low-cost and high-stability catalyst with Platinum-like electrocatalytic performance is significant for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water electrolysis. Herein, ultrafine ruthenium nanoparticles encapsulated in Nitrogen(N)-doped carbon anchored on graphene sheets are fabricated and utilized as HER electrocatalysts. Characterization results verify that the strong interaction between the N-doped carbon shell and the Ru core leads to charge redistributions, promoting Ru in a more active electron-rich state. Therefore, the catalyst exhibits excellent activity over a wide pH range, which only needs 16, 23 and 72 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral electrolytes, respectively. In addition, the N-doped carbon shell protects the Ru nanoparticles from aggregation and decomposition in the extreme electrolyte, contributing to the excellent stability.

Abstract:Although platinum is currently a state-of-the-art catalyst for electrochemical hydrogen production, its scarcity and cost restrict its use in practical processes. Therefore, the design and development of Pt-free electrocatalysts with efficient hydrogen production performance, in terms of activity and durability, have been at the forefront of sustainable HER catalyst engineering. In this study, a ruthenium-based electrocatalyst comprising a Ru component integrated into a cobalt-based metal − organic framework (MOF)-derived Co-nitrogen-doped carbon template (Ru/Co-NC) was synthesized via a multiple-step synthetic approach. The optimal Co-NC support benefits the support − metal interaction for Ru incorporation, enhancing the electrocatalytic HER performance. Importantly, the Ru/Co-NC catalysts require an overpotential of only 45 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 43 mV dec −1 , and surpass the performance of commercial Pt/C at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Its unique structural features endow Ru/Co-NC with good long-term HER stability with negligible changes after accelerated degradation tests. This work offers an effective method for preparing MOF-derived nanocatalysts with compositional and structural control for industrial HER requirements.

Abstract:Abstract The investigation of highly effective, durable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a prerequisite for the upcoming hydrogen energy society. To establish a new hydrogen energy system and gradually replace the traditional fossil-based energy, electrochemical water-splitting is considered the most promising, environmentally friendly, and efficient way to produce pure hydrogen. Compared with the commonly used platinum (Pt)-based catalysts, ruthenium (Ru) is expected to be a good alternative because of its similar hydrogen bonding energy, lower water decomposition barrier, and considerably lower price. Analyzing and revealing the HER mechanisms, as well as identifying a rational design of Ru-based HER catalysts with desirable activity and stability is indispensable. In this review, the research progress on HER electrocatalysts and the relevant describing parameters for HER performance are briefly introduced. Moreover, four major strategies to improve the performance of Ru-based electrocatalysts, including electronic effect modulation, support engineering, structure design, and maximum utilization (single atom) are discussed. Finally, the challenges, solutions and prospects are highlighted to prompt the practical applications of Ru-based electrocatalysts for HER.

Bioinspired Construction of Ruthenium-decorated Nitrogen-doped Graphene Aerogel as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Rational construction of low-cost, efficient, and durable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) is essential to further develop water electrolysis industry. Inspired by the natural enzyme catalysis with coordination environments of catalytic sites and three-dimensional structures, we construct an efficient Ru-based catalyst anchored on the nitrogen dopant on graphene aerogel(Ru-NGA). The Ru-NGA catalyst exhibits dramatically improved electroactivity and stability towards HER with a near-zero onset overpotential, a low Tafel slope of 32 mV/dec, and a high turnover frequency of 5.5 s−1 at −100 mV. The results show that the electronic modulation of metallic Ru nanoparticles by nitrogen coordination weakens the affinity of Ru towards H and hence facilitates the desorption of hydrogen. This research provides in-depth insights into the fundamental relationship between metallic nanostructure and HER activity, and also guides the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts in energy conversion.

Abstract:The scalable production of hydrogen could conveniently be realized by alkaline water electrolysis. Currently, the major challenge confronting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is lacking inexpensive alternatives to platinum-based electrocatalysts. Here we report a high-efficient and stable electrocatalyst composed of ruthenium and cobalt bimetallic nanoalloy encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphene layers. The catalysts display remarkable performance with low overpotentials of only 28 and 218 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and excellent stability of 10,000 cycles. Ruthenium is the cheapest platinum-group metal and its amount in the catalyst is only 3.58 wt.%, showing the catalyst high activity at a very competitive price. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of ruthenium atoms into cobalt core can improve the efficiency of electron transfer from alloy core to graphene shell, beneficial for enhancing carbon-hydrogen bond, thereby lowing ΔGH* of HER.

Abstract:Developing efficient and cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is vital to hydrogen energy's commercial applications. In this study, N,P-doped carbon supported ruthenium (Ru) doped triruthenium tetraphosphide (Re3P4) (Ru-Re3P4/NPC) with porous nanostructure is prepared using the low-toxic melamine phosphate as the carbon and phosphorous source. The in-situ generated N,P-doped carbon layers play a pivotal role in regulating the electrocatalytic activity by avoiding the aggregation of the nanoparticles and increasing the specific surface area. Moreover, Ru doping contributes to the remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the prepared nanomaterials. Impressively, the as-synthesized Ru-Re3P4/NPC presents remarkable electrocatalytic performances toward HER with small overpotentials of 39 mV, 115 mV, and 88 mV to deliver 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic media. Moreover, the prepared electrocatalyst can drive water-splitting with a small potential of 1.45  mA cm−2 and use sustainable energies, including solar, wind, and thermal, as electric resources. This work paves a novel and valuable way to enhance the electrocatalytic performances of metal phosphides.

Abstract:Benefiting from similar hydrogen bonding energy to Pt and much lower price compare with Pt, Ru based catalysts are promising candidates for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalytic activity of Ru nanoparticles can be enhanced through improving their dispersion by using different supports, and the strong metal supports interaction can further regulate their catalytic performance. In addition, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with almost 100% atomic utilization attract great attention and the coordinative atmosphere of single atoms can be adjusted by supports. Moreover, the syngenetic effects of nanoparticles and single atoms can further improve the catalytic performance of Ru based catalysts. In this review, the progress of Ru based HER electrocatalysts are summarized according to their existing forms, including nanoparticles (NPs), single atoms (SAs) and the combination of both NPs and SAs. The common supports such as carbon materials, metal oxides, metal phosphides and metal sulfides are classified to clarify the metal supports interaction and coordinative atmosphere of Ru active centers. Especially, the possible catalytic mechanisms and the reasons for the improved catalytic performance are discussed from both experimental results and theoretical calculations. Finally, some challenges and opportunities are prospected to facilitate the development of Ru based catalysts for HER.
Amorphous Ruthenium-Sulfide with Isolated Catalytic Sites for Pt-Like Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production over Whole Ph Range.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an efficient way to generate hydrogen fuel for the storage of renewable energy. Currently, the widely used Pt-based catalysts suffer from high costs and limited electrochemical stability; therefore, developing an efficient alternative catalyst is very urgent. Herein, one pot hydrothermal synthesis is reported of amorphous ruthenium-sulfide (RuSx ) nanoparticles (NPs) supported on sulfur-doped graphene oxide (GO). The as-obtained composite serves as a Pt-like HER electrocatalyst. Achieving a current density of -10 mA cm-2 only requires a small overpotential (-31, -46, and -58 mV in acidic, neutral, and alkaline electrolyte, respectively) with high durability. The isolated Ru active site inducing Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism in the RuSx NPs is demonstrated by the Tafel analysis and X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization. Theoretical simulation indicates the isolated Ru site exhibits Pt-like Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (-0.21 eV) therefore generating high intrinsic HER activity. Moreover, the strong bonding between the RuSx and S-GO, as well as pH tolerance of RuSx are believed to contribute to the high stability. This work shows a new insight for amorphous materials and provides alternative opportunities in designing advanced electrocatalysts with low-cost for HER in the hydrogen economy.
