However, seismic data recorded on a non‐flat surface topography presents several problems to routine imaging processing, since standard migration algorithms assume data is recorded on a flat surface. The static correction routinely applied to compensate for topography is inaccurate for waves which do not propagate vertically. For large topographic changes when near‐surface velocities are comparable to subsurface velocities, static‐corrections are inadequate. Thus, migration from topography is required in these situations. In this paper, we perform the prestack Kirchhofff time migration from topography. Migration from topography produces enhanced images of steep shallow reflectors when compared to conventional processing by migrating data from the datum. In order to build a good RMS velocity model, we migrate the data from topography and output the common imaging gathers (CIG) on the recorded surface, and move CIG back to a new reference surface. In this new reference surface, the RMS velocity is picked up in the control velocity points. Thus, the velocity values in those points without picking up can be interpolated accurately since the reference surface is flat.
