Abstract:The quality and solidification structure of rotary products produced via horizontal centrifugal casting are contingent upon the thermal–fluid coupling dynamics of the molten metal. This study leverages numerical simulation to model the evolution of filling, solidification, and macrostructure in horizontal centrifugal casting. Utilizing the cellular automaton-finite element module and experiment, the study examines the development and mechanisms of the casting's macrostructure. Results indicate that centrifugal solidification exhibits a unidirectional progression from the exterior to the inside. The casting manifests a radial stratification of solidification structures, with an outer fine-grain zone emerging because of surface chilling. The substantial undercooling fosters the growth of fine grains into columnar crystals, culminating in the formation of an equiaxed crystal zone at the inner side. It is found that minor undercooling rate variations, along with flow-induced drag forces, Rayleigh–Bénard, and Bénard–Marangoni convection, contribute to the attenuation and potential disintegration of the columnar crystal growth front. The graphite spheres are affected by unidirectional solidification and flow state, showing a fine distribution of the outer spheres and an irregular sparse distribution of the inner side. These results lay a foundation for the influence of operating parameters on the quality of castings.
