Abstract:The theory and technology of water-saving through crop compensation for water deficit and how they relate to crop production are theoretically important and potentially promising in agriculture application. Molecular and physiological mechanisms, however, still constitute those issues that need further research. The molecular and physiological processes of water-saving of crop by compensation for moderate water deficit was systematically analyzed based on related research advances in recent years. The researches results showed that water deficit and re-watering could change growth of plant nutritional organs such as roots, stems and leaves. Osmo-regulation, transpiration, photosynthesis and other physiological processes were also altered by water deficit and re-watering. Protein activity and molecular metabolism of crops adapted to changes in water availability. A water deficit threshold controlled compensations in crop production. With appropriate degree and duration of water deficit, crop water use efficiency improved and even increased (instead of decreasing) crop yield. If widely adopted in agricultural production, water-saving technologies through compensation for water deficit could be vital for improving economic returns and food safety.
Water-Saving Potential of Different Agricultural Management Practices in an Arid River Basin

Abstract:Water scarcity threatens food security in arid areas, highlighting the importance of water-saving agriculture for food production. Agricultural management practices are developed to improve water-use efficiency, and their water-saving effects are generally evaluated at the field scale rather than the regional scale. To figure out the regional water-saving potential of irrigation methods and mulching practices, the FAO AquaCrop model was first calibrated and validated at the three experimental stations. With aggregating spatial information, a distributed model was constructed and validated in a typical arid river basin of northwest China. Twelve combinations of soil mulching (plastic and straw) and irrigation methods (basin, furrow, drip, and subsurface drip) were simulated using the model to evaluate the effect of agricultural management practices on crop evapotranspiration (ET), crop water productivity, and regional water consumption. The results showed that soil mulching, advanced irrigation methods, and their combinations reduced noneffective soil evaporation (E) and the E/ET ratios and improved crop water productivity. Plastic mulching combined with subsurface drip irrigation is the most promising practice, increasing the crop water productivity of seed maize and spring wheat by 18.2% and 11.1% on average and reducing regional crop water consumption by 7.7% (75.0 million m3) and 7.4% (72.7 million m3), respectively. The reduction in irrigation water extraction ranged from 20.6% under furrow irrigation with straw mulching to 68.7% under subsurface drip irrigation with plastic mulching. This study quantitatively assessed the water-saving potential of soil mulching, irrigation methods, and their combinations to reduce agricultural water use, offering practical implications for the management and development of water-saving agriculture in arid areas.

Abstract:The basic concept of soil water repellency was introduced, the effects of soil water repellency on field water cycle, soil and water conservation, and groundwater environment was summed up. The reasons of soil water repellency were analyzed. The domestic and international methods used for detecting the degree of soil water repellency and their characteristics were introduced. The research advancement of spatial variability for soil water repellency, soil water movement of water repellent soil during infiltration and evaporation process, and measures for improving infiltration ability of hydrophobic soil were also reviewed and assessed thoroughly. Since there were closed associations between soil water repellency and filed water cycle, microbe activity, runoff and sediment production, and pollution of ground water environment, it was urgent to do related research.

Abstract:Soil moisture evaporation is one of the main processes of mass and energy exchange of soil-atmosphere, which has an important influence on soil engineering properties. It is also the direct cause of many engineering and environmental problems, however, this issue has never been taken into account in geoengineering disciplines. Based on the recent research achievements on soil moisture evaporation in other disciplines, the advances of some important aspects on this topic, i.e. soil moisture evaporation capacity determination, test method, evaporation process, influencing factors and theoretical model, are summarized and shown as follows: (1) To accurately determine the actual evaporation capacity of soil is one of the most important tasks in soil moisture evaporation study. Generally, there are two categories of methods: theory calculation and direct measurement; (2) To carry out evaporation test is an important approach to understand soil moisture evaporation process and the related mechanism. There are two categories of tests: laboratorial test and in-situ test. As compared, evaporation test by environmental chamber has better application prospect; (3) Soil moisture evaporation process can be divided into three stages: constant rate, falling rate and residual rate phases; (4) The factors influencing soil evaporation can be categorized as internal soil factors and external environmental factors. The former one mainly affects soil moisture transportation characteristics, and the latter one mainly influences evaporation energy supply intensity; (5) Many soil moisture evaporation calculation and prediction models have been proposed, however, they show some disadvantages such as large errors, narrow range of adaptation or difficulties on parameters acquisition. Based on the above understanding, and to combine with the research background of geotechnical and geological engineering, some important research topics that should be well investigated in future are proposed, including the evaporation mechanism of falling rate stage, the quantitative relationship between the soil properties and evaporation rate, soil moisture evaporation and transportation mechanisms in clayey soil especially in expansive soil, development of high precision in-situ soil moisture evaporation test apparatus and construction of universal soil moisture evaporation theoretical model.
Quantifying the impacts of agricultural management practices on the water use efficiency for sustainable production in the Loess Plateau region: A meta-analysis

Abstract:The lack of water resources limits sustainable agricultural production in the Loess Plateau region of China, and optimizing field management practices to improve crop water use efficiency (WUE) is a key strategy to solve this problem. However, there is no consensus among researchers on the most appropriate field management practices regarding WUE, which requires further integrated quantitative analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis by computing 1338 effect sizes from 171 publications to quantify the effect of agricultural practices (nitrogen (N) fertilizer management, mulching management, water-saving irrigation, straw return and conservation tillage) on crop WUE. Our results showed that N fertilizer management (51.83% increase, P < 0.05) is the most effective practice for improving the crop WUE, followed by mulching management (17.44% increase, P < 0.05), water-saving irrigation (15.97% increase, P < 0.05), straw return (10.00% increase, P < 0.05), and conservation tillage (5.09% increase, P < 0.05). This study also identified the key drivers (including climatic factors, soil factors, and human intervention factors) that affect the crop WUE under various field management practices. For example, the mean annual precipitation, annual evaporation, soil type, pH, soil total nitrogen content, N application frequency, N fertilizer type, and N application rate were identified as the key factors that affect the crop WUE under N fertilizer management practices. In addition, we quantified the effects of the different drivers on the crop WUE under various field management practices by subgroup analysis, and then the drivers level with the best improvement effect of WUE was determined. Specifically, when the N application rate is 150–225 kg ha−1, the N fertilizer type is controlled release urea, the soil covering ratio is more than 0.5, the irrigation method is drip irrigation, the amount and length of straw returning is 10,001–15,000 kg ha−1 and less than 0.5 cm, etc., the improvement effect of crop WUE was the best. In a word, our results provide references for determining appropriate integrated agricultural management strategies to ensure efficient water use and sustainable production in the Loess Plateau region.
Biological water saving and stress resistance in agriculture through trehalose

Abstract:Biological water-saving agriculture mainly includes breeding of new cultivars,addition of exogenous beneficial substance and hormone,and establishment of efficient water-saving cultivation method.Trehalose,which is an oligosaccharide,is used as an exogenous beneficial substance in agricultural production.On the basis of com-prehensive domestic and foreign related research literature,the properties of trehalose as well as their mechanism of improving plant resistance and the relationships between trehalose and stomatal immunity were analyzed.It is found that exogenous trehalose has nonspecific protective effect,which can effectively improve plant resistance and the a-bility to resist diseases and pests.In addition,trehalose can further enhance the drought resistance of crops by regu-lating stomatal development and stomatal movement.Thus,it is considered that trehalose has broad application prospects in biological water-saving agriculture,and it is an important way to improve the water use efficiency of crops.

Reducing evaporation from phreatic water and soil resalinization by using straw interlayer and plastic mulch

Abstract:Soil salinization severely restricts sustainable agricultural development in the Hetao Irrigation Distract in Inner Mongolia of China. Furthermore, insufficient drainage and over irrigation have aggravated the development of salinization of soil in this area. As such, people are forced to use better and more effective approaches for soil and water management in saline fields to increase crop productivity. The positive effect of both burial of straw interlayer and plastic mulch on the soil infiltration and/or evaporation has been reported, but there is a paucity of information on the effect of combined straw interlayer with plastic mulch, particularly its influence mechanism. With the aim of revealing the beneficial effects of straw interlayer and plastic mulch on water storage and salt control, a laboratory simulation experiment was conducted to study the processes of soil water infiltration and evaporation with the shallow groundwater table, as well as the distribution and transportation of soil water and salt. In the infiltration process, two treatments were designed, including homogenous soil as a control and straw interlayer buried at 40 cm depth. In the consequent process of water evaporation, plastic mulch and non-mulch practices were added respectively based on the previous treatments. The results showed that the straw interlayer buried treatments not only reduced the water infiltration rate and advanced the wetting velocity, but also induced the instability of the wetting front, i.e., the appearance of the preferential flow in the infiltration process. On the other hand, the straw interlayer buried treatments dramatically reduced the groundwater evaporation, and decreased the cumulative evaporation by 75.07%~95.42% during the successive evaporation of 30 days, when compared with the levels of control. In addition, the burial of straw interlayer altered the distribution and transportation of soil water and salt in soil profile. The soil water content in the straw interlayer imposed treatments at the top soil layers was increased while salt content was decreased in the infiltration process, compared to the corresponding ones without the straw interlayer treatments due mainly to the promoted solute leaching efficiency. Primarily, the soil capillary being cut off by the straw interlayer thereby salts up in the straw interlayer buried treatments was controlled, and blocked in the deeper soil layers during the evaporation process. Throughout the experiment, plastic mulch also had an effect of retaining soil moisture and preventing salt accumulating to the surface soil layer. However, the potential effect of mulched with plastic film only on controlling salt accumulation was not as significant as the straw interlayer buried only did. Moreover, the combination of straw interlayer and plastic mulch treatment performed better to prevent water evaporation and salts built-up in the soil than either non-mulch, or the individual use of straw interlayer or plastic mulch. Therefore, a combined straw interlayer and plastic mulch would provide a better edaphic environment for crop growth in agricultural production. The results of this study provide a reference for salt control and water conversation, as well as field management practices in an arid area and saline field.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide and methane were measured in the different water management conditions with laboratory culture methods,Eh change of soil samples after fertilization of the drought treatment(60%~70% WFP)was monitored.The results showed that there was the trade-off relationship between the emission of CH4 and N2O(R2=0.609),and emission of CH4 and N2O was the results of the interaction of water and fertilizer,and gas emissions were affected by water management through Eh.Therefore,it was discovered that organic matter was the main reason contributed to the difference of emission concentration early and later period.
Impacts of re-vegetation on soil water dynamics in a semiarid region of Northwest China

Abstract:Understanding how vegetation (shrub) cover in drylands affects local-to-regional soil water dynamics and associated water balances is of immense importance because of the abundance of afforestation projects worldwide. Vegetation's role in the control of soil water presents a particular challenge to soil water storage (SWS) management in the drylands of China. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a two-year study in the Mu Us Desert of northwest China. The study involved the acquisition of in-situ soil water measurements within the first 180 cm of soil at three sand dune sites characterized by their differences in % shrub cover. The sand dunes varied from a vegetation-free, bare-ground sand dune site (BF) and two partly vegetated sites, one with medium-level (40 %) and another with high shrub cover (80 %; MF and HF, respectively). Results revealed that the site with the high shrub cover (HF) suffered a net reduction in soil water content (SWC) by up to 32.7 and 39.8 % in the shallow and deep subsoil (0-100 and 100-180 cm), respectively, when compared to corresponding changes at the BF site. Soil water content was shown to be largely influenced by site properties, namely shrub biomass and litter density (p < 0.05). Due to aboveground vegetation and rainfall interception by the litter, 32.2 mm of effective rainfall was reduced to the soil for every 10 %-increase in shrub cover. Bands of soil water depletion during the dry year did not fully recover during the following wet year, resulting in the development of a dried soil layer with an average SWC of 4.6-7.8 %. Increased evapotranspiration (ETtotal) led to a decrease in SWS and relative extractable soil water (REW), which caused ETtotal at HF to be lower than the rate observed at MF. These findings highlight the need for improvements in current restoration strategies, meant at striking a balance between vegetation restoration and SWC by developing optimal plant-community cover and mosaicked vegetation systems.
New Comparative Experiments of Different Soil Types for Farmland Water Conservation in Arid Regions

Abstract:Irrigated farmland is the main food source of desert areas, and moisture is the main limiting factor of desert farmland crop productivity. Study on the influence of irrigation on desert farmland soil moisture can guide the agricultural water resource utilization and agricultural production in those regions. At present, the efficiency of irrigation water usage in Northwest China is as low as approximately 40% of the irrigated water. To understand the response of farmland soil moisture in different soil types on irrigation in the Ulan Buh Desert of Inner Mongolia of China, this experimental study takes advantage of different infiltration characteristics and hydraulic conductivities of sand, clay, and loam to determine an optimized soil combination scheme with the purpose of establishing a hydraulic barrier that reduces infiltration. This study includes three comparative experiments with each consisting of a 100 cm thick of filled sand, or clay, or loam soil underneath a 50 cm plough soil, with a total thickness of 150 cm soil profile. A new type of lysimeter is installed below the above-mentioned 150 cm soil profile to continuously measure deep soil recharge (DSR), and the ECH2O-5 soil moisture sensors are installed at different depths over the 150 cm soil profile to simultaneously monitor the soil moisture above the lysimeter. The study analyzes the characteristics of soil moisture dynamics, the irrigation-related recharge on soil moisture, and the DSR characteristics before and after irrigation, during the early sowing period from 2 April to 2 May 2017. Research results show that: (1) Irrigation significantly influences the soil moisture of 0–150 cm depths. The soil moisture increase after the irrigation follows the order from high to low when it is in the order of loam, sand, and clay. (2) Irrigation-induced soil moisture recharge occurs on all three soil combinations at 0–150 cm layers, and the order of soil moisture recharge from high to low is: clay (54.3 mm, 43.39% of the total irrigation), loam (39.83 mm, 31.83% of the total irrigation), and sand (33.47 mm, 26.75% of the total irrigation). (3) After the irrigation event, DSR below 150 cm occurs for all three soil combinations. This study reveals the characteristics of irrigation-induced soil moisture recharge and DSR, and it shows that farmland consisting of an upper 50 cm plough soil and a lower 100 cm filled clay soil can save more water resource at the study site, which is useful in agricultural control measure and water resource management in arid regions.

Abstract:Wasteful use and unreasonable management of water resources is one of the fundamental causes of many problems of desertification and environmental degradation in arid areas.From the point of increase WUE,reviewed the factors influencing interception,stem flow and soil evaporation.In arid areas,the percentage of interception loss may be small,but the role in redirecting water and nutrients in the root zone by stem flow is very significant,infiltration rate increase under the shrubs with higher litter and organic matter content,and the influence of scattered tree shade on soil evaporation appears to be common;The crust compacted by raindrop reduces infiltration also increase evaporation,but the role of algal crust is not very clear;Rainfall interception by surface rock fragments may be an important component of the water balance of the stone mulched fields,it also can increase filtration rate and reduce runoff and evaporation losses.However,the factors and their role affect hydrological processes in arid areas is not come to an agreement to some degree,need to have a comprehensive understand on larger scale.
Study on the Effect of Straw Mulching on Farmland Soil Water

Abstract:Straw mulching farming is currently an effective dry farming technique for improving arid soil environments. Straw mulching technology can increase the infiltration capacity of soil water and improve crop yield and water use efficiency. In this study, the aim is to improve the soil water holding capacity, water retaining capacity, and comprehensive water use efficiency of crops in dry farmland. First, the response surface model is used to study and analyse the optimal parameters of straw returning and its mulching technology, and then, the crop yield, water consumption, and comprehensive water use efficiency of spring corn under different mulching conditions during 2017-2019 are studied. The test results show that the optimized parameters obtained by the response surface model are as follows: film thickness is 0.03 mm, straw returning amount is 4500 kg/hm2, straw particle size is 5 mm, and straw returning depth is 25 mm. At this time, the maximum soil water storage can reach 404.50 mm. The results of the straw mulching test show that under 4500 kg/hm2 mulching, the soil has more water storage, higher soil water content, and a simultaneous increase in water consumption, which is conducive to the efficient use of limited precipitation by crops. The field experiment for three years shows that 4500 kg/hm2 straw (wheat) mulching in the dry farming area of southern Ningxia can better store water and protect soil moisture, promote the virtuous cycle of farmland soil water, and show outstanding performance in improving corn yield and water use efficiency, which can be popularized and implemented in spring corn production in this area.

Abstract:Through a comparative study to current water saving technology of canal seepage control, sprinkler irrigation, micro-irrigation, filtration irrigation, plastic cover irrigation, rainwater-collecting irrigation and no-full irrigation, this paper points out that the key to save water in agriculture irrigation is to reduce evapotranspiration (ET). We believe that only carrying out ET management to reduce invalid ET in agriculture water saving irrigation can we reach the purpose of real water saving and raise water use efficiency, and then realize the sustainable development of water resource step by step. On this basis, the paper does some detailed and profound discussion to the water saving techniques towards to reducing ET, and proposes a water saving technology with key points of soil moisture monitoring, micro-control technique and control programs, that is dedicated irrigation based on soil moisture. Under the premise of keeping crops growing normally, the core of this dedicated water saving measure aiming at reducing ET mainly embodies in four aspects: (1) Keeping soil moisture to carry out on-time and proper irrigation; (2) Adopting drip irrigation in order to keep soil moisture well; (3) Choosing proper time to irrigate; (4) Raising irrigating frequency along with reducing the amount of irrigating water each time.

Abstract:Water or drought stress is one of the most important factors limiting crop growth world-wide.Some changes would be observed in plant growth,physiological mechanisms and hormone level under soil drying stress.In arid or semi-arid region,water deficit in soil evidently inhibit the root and the shoot growth,and decrease biomass,yields and harvest index.Usually,water stress during the grain-filling period would decrease photosynthesis,shorten the grain-filling period,decline the grain-filling rate and induce early senescence,however,it would increase the remetabolism of non-structural carbohydrate(NSC) from the vegetative tissues to the grain.Grain filling is an intensive transportation process regulated by soil drying and plant hormones.The concentration of ABA,which is generally regarded as an inhibitory growth hormone,would increase markedly in leaves,floral organs and developing grains in responses to soil drying.Some of the adaptive responses to drought are due to physiological and morphological changes,such as changes in plant structure,dry matter accumulation,tissue osmotic potential and stomatal conductance.Soil drying is unfavorable to plant growth but may be favourable to the critical point of producing stress.So it is possible to take advantage of soil drying to induce whole-plant senescence and better carbon remetabolism to improve grain yield during the slow grain filling period.If mild soil drying is properly controlled during the later grain-filling period in some crops such as rice(Oryza sativa) and wheat(Triticum aestivum),it could enhance yield and harvest index,and might contribute to water saving,which is imminently needed to develop sustainable agriculture in many parts of the world.

Abstract:Control of evaporation from seasonally frozen soil is an important method for alleviating water shortages in arid and semi‐arid areas. To investigate the inhibition of soil evaporation by sand and the major factors that influence soil evaporation, a series of field experiments with five sand‐mulch thicknesses (0 cm, bare soil (BS); 1 cm (T1); 2 cm (T2); 3 cm (T3); and 4 cm (T4), with an average diameter of 1 mm) were conducted during the freeze–thaw period in Northern China. Soil evaporation characteristics in the three freeze‐thaw stages were revealed and the major factors influencing soil evaporation were analysed using grey correlation analysis (GCA). The results showed that the cumulative soil evaporation decreased with increasing sand‐mulch thickness during the freeze–thaw period, and only small differences in soil evaporation were observed between the T3 and T4 treatments. The reduction in soil evaporation under different sand‐mulch thicknesses was 19.2–62.6% in the unstable freezing stage (P1), 2.0–28.3% in the stable freezing stage (P2), and 4.8–20.4% in the thawing stage (P3). In P1, solar radiation was a major factor influencing soil evaporation in all treatments and vapour pressure was a major factor in the sand‐mulch treatments; and the influence of relative humidity on soil evaporation decreased in the T4 treatment. During the coldest P2, solar radiation was lowest so that relative humidity and wind speed became the more dominant influence factors on soil evaporation in all treatments, and surface soil water content was a major factor in the sand‐mulch treatments. In P3, average air temperature and solar radiation were major factor influencing soil evaporation in all treatments and vapour pressure was a major factor in the BS and T1 treatments, whereas water surface evaporation was the major factor in the T2, T3, and T4 treatments. The results suggest that the addition of sand much in agricultural fields may be a beneficial practice to reduce water stress in arid and semi‐arid areas.This article is protected by copyright. Evapotranspiration and potential water saving effect evaluation of mulched maize fields in China

Abstract:To alleviate the contradiction between crop evapotranspiration (ET) and available water resources, and to develop agricultural production, mulched irrigation, as a water saving technology, is popularized in arid areas of China. However, the observations of ET in long-term mulched farmlands are scarce, so the inter-annual variation and controlling factors of ET after mulching remain uncertain, and the overall water saving effect of mulching in arid areas has not been quantified. Therefore, we conducted the observation experiments (2007-2021) on a mulched maize field, applied the modified Shuttleworth-Wallace model and obtained multi-source data statistics to fill in the gaps in the previous research. The results showed that the mean ET in the past 15 years was 521.68 mm, and the arid areas faced more severe water demand pressure. The inter-annual ET of the mulched maize field increased significantly, mainly caused by the reference evapotranspiration (ET 0 ), while the inter-annual fluctuation was mainly attributed to the crop coefficient (K c ). The contribution of plant transpiration (T r ) to ET was always greater than that of soil evaporation (E s ), and the contribution of solar radiation (Rs) to ET was the largest among environmental factors. In addition, based on observation data and model simulation, it was revealed that the water saving amount and ratio of the long-term mulched maize field were estimated to be 83.8 mm and 13.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the statistical results from 49 sites in five provinces (regions) in Northwest China showed that compared with the agricultural water use in the recent 10 years, the mean annual total potential water saving amount and ratio of the mulched maize field were 2.2 billion m 3 and 2.5%, respectively. Our study will provide important guidance for understanding the variation of crop ET and water resources allocation.

Abstract:Straw mulching is an effective agricultural technology to reduce soil water loss in arid and semi-arid areas. Herein, the soil temperature and soil water content of bare land (LD) and 5 cm (JG5), 10 cm (JG10), 15 cm (JG15), 20 cm (JG20) and 30 cm (JG30) straw mulch thicknesses were measured through field experiments performed to assess the soil water evaporation using the simultaneous heat and water model during a freeze–thaw period. The results showed that the inhibiting effect of straw mulching on soil water evaporation during the freeze-thaw period reached 24–56.7%, and straw mulch reduced the range of daily soil water evaporation by 2.02–2.48 mm, the effects of random factors on the daily soil water evaporation were significantly decreased. The highest soil water evaporation rate occurs during the unstable freezing stage, and the lowest occurs during the stable freezing stage. When the straw mulch thickness exceeded 10 cm, the effect of increasing straw mulch thickness on daily soil water evaporation was reduced. The straw mulch layer could not completely inhibit the effect of the external environment on soil water evaporation even when the straw mulch thickness was increased to 30 cm. This research results can provide a basis for the scientific evaluation and prevention of soil water evaporation in arid and semi-arid areas.
