Abstract:Vegetation plays an important role in the management of water resources and of the terrestrial vegetation degradation in semiarid regions of China. Detailed descriptions of the actual hydrological process of vegetation root water uptake (RWU) are lacking, and the dynamics of interfaces involved in the process of RWU have not received enough attention. A field in situ experiment with bare land and vegetated land was implemented to investigate soil water flow in vadose zones affected by vegetation RWU. The results revealed that, with the influence of RWU, the soil moisture content was redistributed and impacted evaporation and infiltration; therefore, even the roots were driven to utilize groundwater under intense potential evapotranspiration and water stress. Notably, the thicker vadose zones were beneficial for preserving water resources for bare land, but Salix reduced soil water storage by 1191.13 L compared with bare land, which was adverse for water resource development in semiarid regions. The results provide the basis for the protection of the vegetation environment and water resource management in arid regions.

Soil Moisture Variations of Wetland at Different Altitudes in Desert Regions, China

Abstract:Desert wetland is a special ecological environment as water is fundamental to maintaining existence. The soil water of sandy wetland links surficial water and groundwater. This study Takes Habahu National Wetland Nature Reserve as the research area and the water movement characteristics of soil profile as the research purpose. According to the altitude and topographic characteristics, the main focus is monitoring soil moisture in different layers at specific sites. The results show that: (1) In the core area of sandy wetland, the water movement of the soil profile is slow with lower infiltration and evaporation; (2) On the slopes around the wetland, the surface water is recharged by rapid leakage along with the underlying impermeable layer after precipitation due to the sand coverage; (3) In the desert hinterland outside the wetland, the water rapidly infiltrates after precipitation and flows into different groundwater systems along the structural characteristics of the underlying stratum to supplement the nearby wetlands. Based on these characteristics, we put forward the unique viewpoints of environmental protection in sandy wetlands: (1) focus on the protection of surface organisms in the core area of sandy wetland to reduce evaporation and improvethe soil water-holding capacity; (2) Appropriate engineering and biological measures should be applied to the slope outside the core area to reduce surface evaporation and plant transpiration and improve the soil moisture; (3) In the periphery area of the wetland, infiltration should be promoted to ensure the source of water supply to wetlands, which would maintain the existence of wetlands and give full play to their ecological functions. In addition, this study analyzed the relationship between soil moisture and plant diversity of 35 species. 16 plants are considered to be suitable for planting in core area of sandy wetland and 9 plants for planting in the desert hinterland outside the wetland.
Effects of vegetation restoration on soil properties and vegetation attributes in the arid and semi-arid regions of China

Abstract:Driven by the goal of reversing desertification and recovering degraded lands, a wide range of vegetation restoration practices (such as planting and fencing) have been implemented in China's drylands. It is essential to examine the effects of vegetation restoration and environmental factors on soil nutrients to optimize restoration approaches. However, quantitative evaluation on this topic is insufficient due to a lack of long-term field monitoring data. This study evaluated the effects of sandy steppe restoration and sand dune fixation in the semi-arid desert, and natural and artificial vegetation restoration in the arid desert. It considered soil and plant characteristics using long-term (2005–2015) data from the Naiman Research Station located in the semi-arid region and Shapotou Research Station in the arid region of China's drylands. Results showed the sandy steppe had higher soil nutrient contents, vegetation biomass and rate of accumulating soil organic matter (OM) than the fixed dunes and moving dunes. Soil nutrient contents and vegetation biomass of the natural vegetation of Artemisia ordosica were higher than those of the artificial restoration of Artemisia ordosica since 1956. Artificial restoration had a higher rate of accumulating soil OM, total nitrogen (TN) and grass litter biomass than natural restoration. Soil water indirectly affected soil OM by affecting vegetation. Grass diversity was the main influencing factor on soil OM variance in the semi-arid Naiman desert while shrub diversity was the main factor in the arid Shapotou desert. These findings indicate that sand fixation in the semi-arid desert and vegetation restoration in the arid desert bring benefits for soil nutrient accumulation and vegetation improvement, and that natural restoration is preferable to artificial restoration. Results can be used to formulate sustainable vegetation restoration strategies, such as encouraging natural restoration, considering local resource constraints, and giving priority to restoring shrubs in arid areas with limited water.

Spatial heterogeneity of soil water content on surface land following reforestation in a semi-arid region

Abstract:The spatial pattern of soil water content (SWC) determines the success of vegetation restoration in semi- and arid regions. The Qilian Mountains in China are in a semi-arid area where decades of environmental degradation prompted large-scale restoration efforts with a native constructive species Picea crassifolia. However, the relationships between SWC and landcover are not clear in this area, hindering woodland restoration. In this study, we determined spatial distribution and characteristics of SWC in the Qilian Mountains in four main types of landcover. Our results revealed that 1. SWC decreased in the order of natural forest, brushland, grassland, planted forest, and mixed forest, but it was significantly different only in natural forest (p<0.05); 2. planted forest exhibited a lower SWC at young ages (less than 50 a) than natural forest, brushland or grassland, and the ecohydrological effect of afforestation exhibited hysteresis at long time scales; 3. a variogram analysis and Kriging interception of the spatial pattern of SWC showed that shrubland and grassland exhibited superior adaptability to local SWC compared with afforestation. The differences in SWC among various landcover types indicated that strengthening the maintenance and protection of natural forests is more important for restoration efforts than afforestation; furthermore, in semi-arid regions, shrubs and grasses are more suitable for use in ecological restoration than forest plantations.
Understanding the balance between soil conservation and soil water storage capacity during the process of vegetation restoration in semi‐arid watersheds in the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:In the Loess Plateau, gaining insights into the water storage and soil retention functions of diverse vegetation types, especially, in the semi‐arid watersheds is crucial for identifying the key factors necessary to ensure sustainable development and achieve land degradation neutrality. In this study, five different land use types such as forest, shrub, artificial grass, and natural grasslands were surveyed from 2014 to 2020. Meanwhile, bare land was also used as a control plot. The trade‐off between erosion mitigation and water consumption indicator was quantified based on the ecosystem services perspective benefits. Our results showed that there are significant differences among different land use types (p shrubs > artificial grassland > forests. Vegetation restoration was able to change the soil particle size distribution, increasing clay and silt content, and decreasing sand particles. During the growing season, surface soil water storage decreased in all land use types coinciding with the higher decrease in the control plot. The change in surface water storage in the forest was the most stable, with a decrease of 0.13 mm. The trade‐off between erosion mitigation and water consumption indicator was less than 0 for all vegetation types, which indicates a synergistic effect on soil conservation and water storage benefit. Our results demonstrated that shrubs can register the most balanced benefit of water storage and soil preservation. This is a solid basis for the selection of specific vegetation types and the optimization of the watershed landscape in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, characterized by vulnerable areas due to aridification.

Impact of deeper groundwater depth on vegetation and soil in semi-arid region of eastern China

Abstract:Introduction: Understanding the impact of deep groundwater depth on vegetation communities and soil in sand dunes with different underground water tables is essential for ecological restoration and the conservation of groundwater. Furthermore, this understanding is critical for determining the threshold value of groundwater depth that ensures the survival of vegetation. Method: This paper was conducted in a semi-arid region in eastern China, and the effects of deep groundwater depth (6.25 m, 10.61 m, and 15.26 m) on vegetation communities and soil properties (0-200 cm) across three dune types (mobile, semi-fixed, and fixed dunes) were evaluated in a sand ecosystem in the Horqin Sandy Land. Results: For vegetation community, variations in the same species are more significant at different groundwater depths. For soil properties, groundwater depth negatively influences soil moisture, total carbon, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, available phosphorus concentrations, and soil pH. Besides, groundwater depth also significantly affected organic carbon and available potassium concentrations. In addition, herb species were mainly distributed in areas with lower groundwater depth, yet arbor and shrub species were sparsely distributed in places with deeper groundwater depth. Discussion: As arbor and shrub species are key drivers of ecosystem sustainability, the adaptation of these dominant species to increasing groundwater depth may alleviate the negative effects of increasing groundwater depth; however, restrictions on this adaptation were exceeded at deeper groundwater depth.
Long-term water balance variation after revegetation on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert

Abstract:Maintaining the water balance of soil-vegetation systems is necessary for the ecological restoration of desertified regions. However, the major processes controlling water balance after revegetation remains unclear. To quantify the water balance after revegetation of moving sand dunes, we performed an 18-year-long large-weighting lysimeter monitoring study in the Tengger Desert, northern China. We measured daily precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET), and drainage loss (DL) on an area revegetated with either Artemisia ordosica or Caragana korshinskii, two shrubs with different crown size and rooting depth, and with bare soil. Our results showed that the annual precipitation of 186 mm was partitioned to 64% evaporation and 23% DL on the bare soil control. However, the water balance changed after revegetation, with the vast majority of precipitation ending up as ET (93% in A. ordosica and 98% in C. korshinskii). The relationships of ET and DL with precipitation showed a quasi-steady state at annual scales, a varying state at seasonal scales, and a pulsed state at daily scales. We also observed spatiotemporal niche partitioning between the two shrubs, where differences in water use promoted their coexistence in the revegetated desert areas. Our study suggests that the density and area of revegetation should be controlled within a certain range in accordance with the underlying soil-vegetation water balance in desert regions. Otherwise, sand-binding revegetation would be degraded and the ecological benefits of dune fixation would be lost.

Abstract:Revegetation is one of the most effective ways to combat desertification and soil erosion in semiarid and arid regions. However, the impact of the perturbation of revegetation on ecohydrological processes, particularly its effects on the interplay between hydrological processes and vegetation growth under water stress, requires further investigation. This study evaluated the effects of revegetation on the energy, water, and carbon fluxes in a desert steppe in Yanchi County, Ningxia Province, northwest China, by simulating two vegetated scenarios (shrub–grassland ecosystem and grassland ecosystem) using the STEMMUS–SCOPE (Simultaneous Transfer of Energy, Mass and Momentum in Unsaturated Soil–Soil Canopy Observation of Photosynthesis and Energy fluxes) model. The model was validated by field observations from May to September of 2016–2019. The evaluation of revegetation effects relied on comparing simulated fluxes between two vegetated scenarios in 2016 and 2019. In both scenarios, turbulent energy was dominated by latent heat flux, which was stronger in the shrub–grassland ecosystem ( + 7 %). A higher leaf area index and root water uptake of C 3 shrubs ( Caragana intermedia ) resulted in increased carbon fixation ( + 83 %) and transpiration ( + 72 %) of the shrub–grassland ecosystem compared to the C 3 grassland ecosystem. Accompanied by a marked increase in root water uptake ( + 123 %), revegetation intensified water consumption beyond the levels of received precipitation. These results highlight the critical importance of considering both energy and water budgets in water-limited ecosystems during ecological restoration to avert soil water depletion.

Abstract:Precipitation is the most important water resource in semi-arid regions of China. The redistribution of precipitation among atmospheric water, soil water and groundwater are related to the land surface afforested ecological system. The study took widely replanted Pinus sylvestris var. Mongolica (PSM) in Mu Us Sandy Land (MUSL) as a research object and monitored precipitation, soil moisture, sap flow, and deep soil recharge (DSR) to find out moisture distribution in shallow soil layers. Results showed that the restoration process of PSM in MUSL changed the distribution of precipitation, with part of it infiltrating downward as DSR and part of it being stored in the shallow soil. Consequently, evapotranspiration increased and DSR significantly decreased, resulting in up to 466.9 mm of precipitation returning to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration in 2016. Vegetation increased soil water storage (SWS) capacity, with maximum SWS in PSM plot and bare sandy land (BSL) being 260 mm and 197 mm per unit horizontal area, respectively in 2016. DSR decreased from 54% of precipitation in the BSL plot to 0.2% of precipitation in the PSM plot in 2016. A great portion of infiltrated water was stored in the PSM ecosystem, resulting in a time lag of infiltration to reach the deep soil layer, and the infiltration rate in the BSL plot was 11 times of that in the PSM plot. SWS decreased 16 mm and 7.6 mm per unit horizontal area over a one-year period (from March to October, non-freezing time) in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The PSM annual sap flow was maintained at a relatively constant level of 154 mm/yr. Through in-situ measurement and comparative analysis of the precipitation redistribution of the BSL plot and the PSM plot, we find that PSM can significantly reduce the shallow soil water storage and DSR. However, substantial reduction of shallow soil water storage and DSR is detrimental for the long-term development of PSM forest. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce PSM density to cut the water consumption by PSM per unit area, thus to augment the shallow SWS and DSR, which will be beneficial for the PSM to survive under extreme drought conditions in the future. This study helps us understand the role of precipitation-induced groundwater recharge in the process of vegetation restoration in semi-arid regions and explains the possible causes of PSM forest degradation.

Revealing the Hidden Consequences of Increased Soil Moisture Storage in Greening Drylands

Abstract:Vegetation primarily draws water from soil moisture (SM), with restoration in drylands often reducing SM storage (SMS). However, anomalies have been detected in the Beijing–Tianjin Sand Source Region (BTSSR) of China via the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). This study quantified the sources of increased SMS in drylands to elucidate the effects of vegetation restoration on SMS. The results indicated the following: (1) In vegetated drylands, 46.2% experienced a significant increase in SMS while 53.8% remained stable; both were positively correlated with the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI). (2) The increase in SMS was accompanied by a decrease in groundwater storage (GWS), as indicated by the significant correlation coefficients of −0.710 and −0.569 for SMS and GWS, respectively. Furthermore, GWS served as the primary source of water for vegetation. (3) The results of the redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the initial vegetation, the driver of the observed trend of increased SMS and decreased GWS, accounted for 50.3% of the variability in water storage. Therefore, to sustain dryland ecosystems, we recommend that future vegetation restoration projects give due consideration to the water balance while concurrently strengthening the dynamic monitoring of SMS and GWS.

Response of Temporal Variation of Soil Moisture to Vegetation Restoration in Semi-Arid Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Soil moisture is fundamental to ecosystem sustainability in semi-arid regions, and characterizing the response of temporal soil moisture variation to different vegetation types is important for assessing the sustainability of vegetation restoration. In this study, the soil moisture among eight typical types of vegetation is investigated and compared during three rainy seasons. The temporal variations of soil moisture in the near-surface (0–0.4m), sub-surface (0.4–1.0m), and deep layers (1.0–2.0m) are explored to evaluate the ecohydrological effect of vegetation restoration in the semi-arid Loess Plateau of China. The results show that soil moisture content decreases drastically after vegetation restoration, with no significant difference in near-surface soil moisture among the vegetation types but significant differences in the sub-surface and deep soil layers. Introduced vegetation is the main factor affecting the soil moisture deficit below near-surface layers. Secondly, soil moisture is temporally stable in the sub-surface and deep layers, especially in introduced vegetation. This indicates that introduced vegetation consumes excessive amount of soil moisture and induces temporally stable soil desiccation. Soil desiccation with temporal stability cannot provide enough available soil moisture for plants and will inevitably threaten the sustainability of vegetation restoration and the associated ecosystem services. Lastly, high planting density is the main cause of severe soil moisture deficit on a long-term temporal scale. Our study results suggest that the current planting density of introduced vegetation is too high in specific cases and should be optimized with local soil moisture conditions in semi-arid regions.

Abstract:Abstract Changes in land use type can lead to variations in soil water characteristics. The objective of this study was to identify the responses of soil water holding capacity (SWHC) and soil water availability (SWA) to land use type (grassland, shrubland and forestland). The soil water characteristic curve describes the relationship between gravimetric water content and soil suction. We measured the soil water characteristic parameters representing SWHC and SWA, which we derived from soil water characteristic curves, in the 0–50 cm soil layer at sites representing three land use types in the Ziwuling forest region, located in the central part of the Loess Plateau, China. Our results showed that the SWHC was higher at the woodland site than the grassland and shrubland, and there was no significant difference between the latter two sites, the trend of SWA was similar to the SWHC. From grassland to woodland, the soil physical properties in the 0–50 cm soil layer partially improved, BD was significantly higher at the grassland site than at the shrubland and woodland sites, the clay and silt contents decreased significantly from grassland to shrubland to woodland and sand content showed the opposite pattern, the soil porosity was higher in the shrubland and woodland than that in the grassland, the soil physical properties across the 0–50 cm soil layer improved. Soil texture, porosity and bulk density were the key factors affecting SWHC and SWA. The results of this study provide insight into the effects of vegetation restoration on local hydrological resources and can inform soil water management and land use planning on the Chinese Loess Plateau.

Abstract:Time-series analysis of soil water storage (SWS) can provide important information on critical hydrological variability related to soil water recharge, retention, and vegetation water consumption, all of which are highly non-linear and non-stationary, making mining and analysis extremely challenging. In this study, Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (MEMD) was used to separate and analyze time-series data on soil moisture, soil temperature, and meteorological factors in three different land types (bare land [BL], grassland [GL], and shrubland [SL]) in the Mu Us Desert, Shaanxi Province, China. Path analysis was then used to reveal the driving force of periodic variability in SWS after decomposition. Using daily SWS data, two new indicators, evapotranspiration capacity ( K e ) and rainfall interception capacity ( K p ), were also proposed in order to improve the accuracy of soil water conservation capacity calculation. The results revealed strong time-persistent memory of SWS in all land types, with hydrological periodic variability mainly reflected on a monthly scale (34–45 d). The greatest memory period was observed in SL followed by BL and GL. Subsequent path analysis suggested that dry-wet alternation (R 2 =0.32–0.48) driven by interactions between precipitation, solar radiation, and saturated vapor pressure were the main causes of SWS variability in the summer. While, freeze–thaw cycles (R 2 =0.73–0.86) driven by the soil temperature and meteorological factors were the main causes of SWS variability in winter. In the root zone (0–150 cm), the water conservation capacity of BL, GL, and SL was 139.24, 38.24, and 24.76 mm/y, respectively. In addition, the K e /K p values and MEMD residual component revealed that SL has greater potential for water conservation than GL. Overall, these findings suggest that in order to conserve local groundwater aquifers, areas of BL require appropriate protection in arid regions. The results of this study provide a basis for future analyses of soil moisture variability and water conservation in arid regions.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration as an effective sand fixation measure has made great achievements in China. However, soil water conditions deteriorate with the development and maturity of sand-fixing vegetation. In this study, we investigated the relationship between soil water content (SWC) and vegetation coverage (VC) at different portion (top, middle and bottom) on ten sand dunes during the growing season (April to October) in Horqin Sandy Land, northern China. We analyzed the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of SWC under different VC. The results indicate that VC and soil water storage were negatively correlated. The effect of vegetation on soil water storage on the sand dunes was greater in the dry season than the wet season. The VC and coefficient of coefficient of SWC were positively correlated at the 20 to 140 cm soil depth. As VC increased, the effect of drought stress increased at the 20 to 200 cm soil depths. The VC and SWC were negatively correlated at all the three portions of the sand dunes. According to soil water conditions and the concept of wilting humidity at different VC, we found that the suitable VC values were less than 0.46, 0.52, and 0.71 at the top, middle and bottom of the sand dunes, respectively.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration is helpful in preventing soil erosion but aggravates water scarcity, thus resulting in soil desiccation on the wind–water erosion crisscross region (WWECR) of the Loess Plateau in Northwestern China. However, no guideline currently exists on the selection of plant species and density for restoration purposes. Based on the process model of soil water-carrying capacity for vegetation (SWCCV) originally developed in this region, this study validated the model under a broad range of weather regimes, soil types, and land uses. The SWCCV model was applied as a diagnostic tool to obtain insights into the separate effects of vegetation density and land use on soil water dynamics on the WWECR of the Loess Plateau. Results showed that the total water loss at semi-natural grasslands was close to rainfall while significantly decreasing runoffs, thus indicating that semi-natural grass was suitable for vegetation restoration on the WWECR. If Caragana korshinskii is planted for agronomic and economic benefits, a density of 3,400 trees ha−1 will yield the most optimal soil water conservation benefits at study site. Our recommended land use and vegetation density were directive and instructional for vegetation restoration on the WWECR and that our modeling approach could be extended to applications in other arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract:Abstract. An accurate assessment of soil water balance components (SWBCs) is necessary for improving irrigation strategies in any water-limited environment. However, quantitative information on SWBCs is usually challenging to obtain, because none of the components (i.e., irrigation, drainage, and evapotranspiration) can be easily measured under actual conditions. Soil moisture is a variable that integrates the water balance components of land surface hydrology, and the evolution of soil moisture is assumed to contain the memory of antecedent hydrologic fluxes, and can thus be used to determine SWBCs from a hydrologic balance. A database of soil moisture measurements from six experimental plots with different treatments in the middle Heihe River basin of China was used to test the potential of a such a database for estimating SWBCs. We first compared the hydrophysical properties of the soils in these plots, such as vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and soil water retention features, for supporting SWBC estimations. We then determined evapotranspiration and other SWBCs using a method that combined the soil water balance method and the inverse Richards equation (a model of unsaturated soil water flow based on the Richards equation). To test the accuracy of our estimation, we used both indirect methods (such as power consumption of the pumping irrigation well and published SWBCs values at nearby sites) and the water balance equation technique to verify the estimated SWBCs values, all of which showed good reliability with respect to our estimation method. Finally, the uncertainties of the proposed methods were analyzed to evaluate the systematic error of the SWBC estimation and any restrictions regarding its application. The results showed significant variances among the film-mulched plots in both the cumulative irrigation volumes (652.1–867.3 mm) and deep drainages (170.7–364.7 mm). Moreover, the un-mulched plot had remarkably higher values in both cumulative irrigation volumes (1186.5 mm) and deep drainages (651.8 mm) compared with the mulched plots. Obvious correlation existed between the volume of irrigation and that of drained water. However, the ET demands for all of the plots behaved pretty much the same, with the cumulative ET values ranging between 489.1 and 561.9 mm for the different treatments in 2016, suggesting that the superfluous irrigation amounts had limited influence on the accumulated ET throughout the growing season due to the poor water-holding capacity of the sandy soil. This work confirmed that relatively reasonable estimations of the SWBCs in coarse-textured sandy soils can be derived by using soil moisture measurements; the proposed methods provided a reliable solution over the entire growing season and showed a great potential for identifying appropriate irrigation amounts and frequencies, and thus a move toward sustainable water resources management, even under traditional surface irrigation conditions.

Abstract:Wetting and drying climate sequences and anthropogenic vegetation changes can have profound effects on the hydrological cycle and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems. China contains many different climates, from humid to extremely arid and it contributes to the global mitigation strategies of climate change. China is also an important contributor to global greening and carbon sequestration. In view of this, we estimated the spatial and temporal variation of leaf area index (LAI), dryness/wetness index (DWI), and soil moisture (SM) in arid (A), semi-arid (SA), semi-humid (SH), and humid (H) climate zones during 1981–2018 in China and analyzed the patterns of DWI and LAI effects on SM under different vegetation greenness. The results showed a significantly increasing trend of LAI in all climatic zones, and the contribution was from highest to lowest: SH (8.17 × 10 -3 m 2 m −2 year −1 ), SA (7 × 10 -3 m 2 m −2 year −1 ), H (4.71 × 10 -3 m 2 m −2 year −1 ), and A (3.98 × 10 -3 m 2 m −2 year −1 ). The SA and A zones are becoming wetter, while the soil of SH and H zones are drying. The dry/wet climate variation plays a decisive role in soil moisture, while the role of vegetation is limited. Additionally, the LAI 3 (mean LAI from 2016 to 2018) thresholds were 0.25–0.41 and 0.84–0.86 for A and SA as a whole, respectively, as well as 0.47–0.54 and 0.93–1.18 for grassland, respectively. When vegetation exceeded this threshold, the effect of vegetation on soil moisture showed a shift from increasing to decreasing change. Overall, the results of the study provide improved understanding of the atmosphere-soil-vegetation interactions under climate change, as well as effects of vegetation restoration and water conservation efforts.

Abstract:Amid global warming, the timely supplementation of soil water is crucial for the effective restoration and protection of the ecosystem. It is therefore of great importance to understand the temporal and spatial variations of soil water sources. The research collected 2451 samples of soil water, precipitation, river water, ground ice, supra-permafrost water, and glacier snow meltwater in June, August, and September 2020. The goal was to quantify the contribution of various water sources to soil water in the Three-Rivers Headwater Region (China) during different ablation periods. The findings revealed that precipitation, ground ice, and snow meltwater constituted approximately 72 %, 20 %, and 8 % of soil water during the early ablation period. The snow is fully liquefied during the latter part of the ablation period, with precipitation contributing approximately 90 % and 94 % of soil water, respectively. These recharges also varied markedly with altitude and vegetation type. The study identified several influencing factors on soil water sources, including temperature, precipitation, vegetation, evapotranspiration, and the freeze–thaw cycle. However, soil water loss will further exacerbate vegetation degradation and pose a significant threat to the ecological security of the "Chinese Water Tower". It emphasizes the importance of monitoring soil water, addressing vegetation degradation related to soil water loss, and determining reasonable soil and water conservation and vegetation restoration models.

Abstract:As a principal part of terrestrial ecological environment, vegetation is dominant in maintaining the function of terrestrial ecosystem. In order to systematically study the change patterns, causes, and implications of vegetation cover in a typical semi-humid and semi-arid region under changing environments, the Wei River Basin (WRB) was selected as the case study. Spatial-temporal changing patterns of vegetation cover in the WRB were firstly examined based on satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Then, the underlying causes were studied by investigating the relationships among precipitation, temperature and soil moisture (SM) condition using the cross wavelet technique. Furthermore, implications of changing vegetation cover on runoff and sediment load were also analyzed. Results indicated that: (1) significant increasing trends of vegetation cover were detected at annual scale; and seasonal vegetation cover in the WRB is characterized with significant increasing trends in spring and autumn, while insignificant decreasing trend of summer vegetation cover in the upstream and midstream; (2) stationarity of annual NDVI is invalid with change points identified in all subregions of the WRB; (3) the correlations between annual NDVI series and precipitation, temperature and SM series demonstrate that significant increasing vegetation cover in the WRB are more influenced by temperature and SM condition than precipitation, anthropogenic factor however is also another reason for changing vegetation cover in the basin; and (4) statistically significant negative correlations between NDVI and runoff, sediment discharge imply that aside from human activities, increasing vegetation cover partially contributes to the reduction of runoff and sediment in the WRB. These findings are helpful for scientific assessment of ecological restoration projects, thereby facilitating local soil and water conservation.
Evapotranspiration over Artificially Planted Shrub Communities in the Shifting Sand Dune Area of the Tengger Desert, North Central China

Abstract:Revegetation is a common method to combat desertification in arid and semi-arid areas worldwide. The objective of this study was to characterize the evapotranspiration (ET) of a 20-year-old revegetated area of the Tengger Desert. During the measurement period from 2009 to 2012, ET was measured by the eddy covariance technique. The result showed that the values for mean daily ET were 0.43, 0.39, 0.43 and 0.59mmd(-1) in 2009-2012, respectively. In the non-growing season, the diurnal ET variation showed a normal distribution with a maximum value occurring at noon, while it showed multimodal distribution trend occurred in a dry day and a unimodal trend in a wet day with a maximum value occurring at noon in the growing season. During the 4-year measurements, despite the large inter-annual variation of precipitation (annual mean precipitation of 164.4 +/- 33.5mm), the water loss through ET (667.5mm) was almost equal to rainfall (657.8mm), and the mean of ET/P was 1.01.The annual ET amounts were 153.6, 143.3, 156.2 and 214.4mmy(-1) in 2009-2012, respectively, with corresponding ratio between accumulated ET and precipitation (ET/P) of 1.03, 1.14, 0.82 and 1.12. This indicated that the annual ET amounts can be modified by the soil water storage, which led to water loss through ET exceeding the water input by precipitation in a drier year, and soil water can be replenished in a wetter year. Thus, the vegetation protection system using plantations of xerophyte shrubs in the present study area is a success with a trade-off of acceptable hydrological consequences that deserve to be popularized.
