Abstract:The growth of ultra thin films of Cs and C60 on a graphite surface has been studied by electron energy loss spectroscopy. The results show that CsC60 layered structures can be fabricated, but only at low temperatures due to the high mobility of Cs adatoms. At room temperature, Cs adatoms are found to penetrate into C60 layers and intermix with C60 molecules. At about 100 K, such intermixing occurs mainly at the top most layer. Charge transfer from Cs to the t1u derived LUMO band of C60 is found only when Cs is in direct contact with C60 molecules. The electronic excitation from the t1u to t1g C60 molecular orbital-derived band exhibits complicated line shape changes, suggesting the breakdown of the single-electron rigid band picture of C60 in these structures. We discuss the likely causes in terms of the charge state of the C60 molecules and possibly also their local cation environment.
