Abstract:Underwater structure of bridge is the substantial bearing member of bridge and its structural status includes durability status and safety status. This paper analyzes the performance degradation model and disease features of underwater concrete structural material, and suggests major evaluation factors for structure status, and sets up structure status evaluation model based on analysis hierarchy process. An underwater structure of a real bridge is used to verify the evaluation result of this model. The verification result shows the evaluation result of the models may well demonstrate the true status of underwater structure, and it has practical application value.

Abstract:Main types of the pier,abutment and foundation in substructure of RC or PC bridges in China were summarized respectively.It was pointed out that the main diseases in substructure of concrete bridges were differential settlement of foundations,insufficient carrying capacity,durability diseases of reinforced concrete,cracking of concrete pier columns,bent caps and abutments etc..In allusion to the concrete pier,abutment and foundation,the causes and mechanisms of these diseases were analyzed from the design,construction,maintenance and operation of bridges.The relevant maintenance and strengthening methods were also discussed,such as the foundation enlargement method,adding pile method and artificial foundation reinforcement method for concrete and RC pier or abutment foundation;the method of RC columns reinforced by reinforced concrete hoop or FRP for piers,the reinforcement method of pasting steel strips or plates,the method of external prestressed reinforcement and additional support method,etc.for RC bent caps;the method of reducing load,the method of reducing filling height by adding approach spans,the support beam method and the reinforcement method of installing auxiliary retaining wall,etc.for RC abutments.

Abstract:In this paper the major types of piers, abutment and foundation in substructure of RC or PC bridges in China are summarized. The main types of defects occurring in substructure of concrete bridges including uneven settlement of foundation, lower carrying capacity, durability defects of reinforced concrete and cracking of concrete pier columns as well as abutments and cap beams have been pointed out. In addition to the concrete pier, abutment and foundation, the causes and mechanisms of these defects were analyzed from different points of view such as design, construction, maintenance and operation management. The relevant maintenance and strengthening methods were discussed and put forward, such as the foundation enlargement method, adding pile method and artificial foundation reinforcement method for concrete and RC pier or abutment foundation, the method of RC pier columns reinforced by RC hoop or FRP for piers, the reinforcement method of pasting steel strip or plate, the method reinforced by external prestressed tendons and additional support columns method for RC cap beams, the method of reducing load, the method of reducing fill height by adding numbers of approach spans, the support beam method and the method reinforced by auxiliary retaining wall for RC abutments. It is possible to recover the function of the RC or PC bridges and enhance their durability and load carrying capacity by employing corresponding maintenance and strengthening measures. At the same time, vehicle overload should be strictly limited according to the structural safety matters.

Abstract:In this paper, the main types of the superstructure of concrete bridges in China are summarized. It is pointed out that the main defects in the superstructure of concrete bridges in China are penetration of chloride ion, corrosion of steel bar, overlarge deformation, and cracking of main beams or box girders. Based on the various defects existing in different types of bridge superstructures, the causes and mechanisms of these defects are analyzed from the view of design, construction, material, and service conditions. The relevant maintenance and strengthening countermeasures are put forward, such as crack grouting, shotcreting reinforcement, pasting steel reinforcement plates on surface of beam and box girder, pasting carbon fiber or other fiber materials, increasing the cross section of beam and box girder, adding external prestressed tendons, changing the structural system, adding main girders or strengthening lateral connection among main girders, and other strengthening methods. These strengthening methods aim to improve the durability and bearing capacity of bridges, extend service life of bridges, and assure the integral performance of bridges in the whole life cycle.

Abstract:The tide of bridge building has passed. Nowadays, the monitoring and maintenance of bridges is very important for their safety, durability, and applicability, and it is the focus of the worlds attention and research. This paper analyzes the common diseases and maintenance strategies of common cable-stayed bridges and cable-stayed bridges in coastal areas. This paper includes system composition, sensor layout, sensor types, monitoring objects, structural health status evaluation, and daily maintenance, as well as Sutong Bridge, Changmen Grand Bridge, and Ganjiang Grand Bridge of Changgan Passenger Transport in Ganzhou and other concrete examples. The modules and functions of structural health status assessment and the application of the bridge health monitoring system, such as early warning and assessment in the daily monitoring of cable-stayed bridges, are introduced. And Changmen Grand Bridge, Ganjiang Grand Bridge of Changgan Passenger Transport in Ganzhou, and Sutong Bridge are compared and analyzed according to the arrangement of measuring points, monitoring objects, and corresponding sensors. Finally, this paper briefly discusses the basic methods of preventive maintenance, BIM, and other related intelligent monitoring methods.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid urbanization process and increased accidents of bridge damage and collapse, the research of bridge health monitoring and early-warning technology for the public safety has been promoted. Temperature load is one of the main loads to incur the deformation and the variation of stress of bridges. So temperature measurement is an important component of health monitoring for urban bridges. In this paper, a smart temperature measurement system is described which takes advantage of FBG sensor performance characteristics to improve the bridge temperature measurement. At present, the system has been integrated and applied in the project of main roads bridge Online Safety Monitoring Management System in Hangzhou (Phase II), a web-based urban bridge cluster monitoring system have been established since 2007. According to a tied arch bridge case studies, the one-year measurement data shows that the system not only can accurately collect the bridge temperature information and variety, but also successfully improve the performance benefits such as reduced measurement uncertainty, increased robustness, and failure prediction and detection.

Abstract:Aiming at features of different types of bridges,this paper presented index system of health-monitoring system and condition assessment on-line for R.C.& P.C.bridges in service according to current technical code and specifications for relative bridge in China.Sensors layout principle and general sensors layout project of stresses and displacements in health monitoring system for concrete bridge is discussed.The corresponding system design modules and top flow charts of data analysis are given.The presented index system of health monitoring system and condition assessment system,general sensors layout project of stresses and displacements and design of system modules have important guidance meaning and practical value for health-monitoring and maintenance management of R.C.& P.C.bridges in service.

Abstract:Abstract In China, the northeastern region has preserved many valuable modern built heritage buildings, which are undergoing difficult exploratory protection during the industrial and urbanisation process. Taking Dalian city as a case study, this article retraces the history of Dalian’s opening up and colonial management from the perspective of urban planning and historic district protection and management systems. This article sorts out the influence of national and local institutional policies on Dalian’s urban construction and development to analyse the past evolution, current problems and internal causes of the renovation and protection of Dalian’s typical historic districts. This influence is mainly reflected in the lack of protection and damage done to unofficial heritage, the disconnection between historic districts and the surrounding environments and urban textures, and the Chinese-style transformation and economic decline of exotic areas. This paper calls for attention to and the rapid clarification of the built heritage list, the improvement of planning and protection systems and related supporting policies, and a focus on the protection of the authenticity of colonial heritage. This paper provides strategic guidance for improving the protection of historic districts in Dalian in Northeast China and hopes to serve as a reference for the protection of built heritage in other nonfamous historic and cultural cities.

Abstract:This paper emphatically analyzes some existing problems in planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of concrete arch bridges, including insufficient load bearing capacity caused by uneven settlement of bridge piers, horizontal displacement, change of temperature, overload, lower design load level in original bridge design, and poor durability and performance degradation of concrete structures caused by chloride permeability, steel bar corrosion, carbonization, cover spalling of concrete, aging cracking at the PE protective layer of suspenders, rain leakage, and corrosion of concrete arches etc. From the safety, applicability, durability, economy, environmental protection, and sustainability considerations in life cycle of bridges, the appropriate maintenance strategies and methods of arch bridges are explored for the different objectives and performance levels. Abstract:As a crucial infrastructure in the transport system, the safe operation of bridges is directly related to all aspects of people’s daily lives. The development of bridge structural health monitoring technology and its application play an important role in ensuring the safety and extending the service life of bridges. This paper carries out in-depth research and analysis on the related technology of bridge structural health monitoring. Firstly, the existing monitoring technologies at home and abroad are sorted out, and the advantages and problems of various methods are compared and analyzed, including nondestructive testing, stress measurement, vibration characteristic identification, and other commonly used monitoring technologies. Secondly, the key technologies and equipment in the bridge health monitoring system, such as sensor technology, data acquisition, and processing technology, are introduced in detail. Finally, the development trend in the field of bridge health monitoring is prospected from both theoretical research and technical application. In the future, with the development of emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, it is expected that bridge health monitoring with intelligent and systematic features will be more widely applied to provide a stronger guarantee for the safe and efficient operation of bridges.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems more and more become a technique for ensuring the health and safety of bridges and also an important approach for research of the damage accumulation or even disaster evolving characteristics of bridges, and attract prodigious research interests and active development interests of research community, engineers and public sector since a great number of bridges are planning and constructing each year in mainland China (Ou, 2003). SHM system includes sensor module, data acquisition and process system, signal transmission system, damage detection, model updating, safety evaluation, data management, integrated system, decision-making techniques of health status of structure based on measured data. In the past decade, Chinese researchers have made great progress and fruit achievements in research and application of SHM. In this paper, the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice of SHM for bridges in the mainland of China are summarized.In this paper, some advance smart sensors developed by Chinese researchers, especially optical fiber Bragg-grating (OFBG) sensor, OFBG-based smart self-sensing products are introduced. Wireless strain sensors, wireless accelerometers and sensor networks are presented. The implementations of SHM systems for bridge are summarized. And then two SHM systems for two cable-stayed bridges are presented in detail as examples to demonstrate the development of SHM in the mainland of China. Based on the research and application, guidelines of SHM for bridges are urgent to publish. Recent progress on this topic is also introduced in this paper. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group.

Advances in Bridge Engineering

Abstract:Abstract Bridge construction is one of the cores of traffic infrastructure construction. To better develop relevant bridge science, this paper introduces the main research progress in China and abroad in 2021 from 12 aspects. The content consists of four parts in 12 aspects. The first part is about the bridge structure and analysis theories, including concrete bridge and high-performance materials, steel bridges, composite girders and cable-supported bridge analysis theories. The second part is about the bridge disaster prevention and mitigation, including bridge seismic resistance, vibration and noise reduction of rail transit bridges, monitoring and detection of steel bridge, hydrodynamics of coastal bridges, and durability of the concrete bridge under the complex environmental conditions. The last part is concerning the bridge emerging technologies, including bridge assessment and reinforcement, the technology in bridge structure test and intelligent construction and safe operation and maintenance of bridges.

Abstract:The large number of long-span bridges constructed in China motivates the applications of structural health monitoring (SHM) technology. Many bridges have been equipped with sophisticated SHM systems in the mainland of China and in Hong Kong of China. Recently, SHM technology has been extended to field test systems. In this view, SHM can serve as a tool to develop the methods of life-cycle performance design, evaluation, maintenance and management of bridges; to develop new structural analysis methods through validation and feedback from SHM results; and to understand the behavior of bridges under natural and man-made disasters, rapidly assess the damage and loss of structures over large regions after disasters, e.g., earthquake, typhoon, flood, etc. It is hoped that combining analytical methods, numerical simulation, small-scale tests and accelerated durability tests with SHM could become the main engine driving the development of bridge engineering. This paper demonstrates the above viewpoint.

Abstract:Intelligent health monitoring systems are becoming attractive topics in civil engineering because they not only ensure the safety of infrastructures; but also provide a method to research the evolving of damage and performance deterioration of infrastructures. However, its full implementation is very limited so far. Last year, two health monitoring systems were installed on two cable-stayed bridges for monitoring their health and assessing their safety in long-term service in mainland China, i.e. Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge and Harbin Songhua River Cable-stayed Bridge. The health monitoring system for Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge successively measures data and evaluates the safety on-line. The monitoring system for Harbin Songhua River Cable-stayed Bridge measures data periodically every year and evaluates the safety off-line. In this paper, two health monitoring systems for the above two cable-stayed bridges are introduced and partial data collected when the bridges subjected to vehicle loads and ambient condition during the static and dynamic tests are presented.
