Abstract:We give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix by using its average 2-row sums, and characterize the equality cases if the matrix is irreducible. We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.

Abstract:Utilizing the concept of Perron complement, a new estimate for the spectral radius of a nonnegative irreducible matrix is presented. A new matrix is derived that preserves the spectral radius while its minimum row sum increases and its maximum row sum decreases. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new class of nonnegative tensors --- strictly nonnegative tensors. A weakly irreducible nonnegative tensor is a strictly nonnegative tensor but not vice versa. We show that the spectral radius of a strictly nonnegative tensor is always positive. We give some sufficient and necessary conditions for the six well-conditional classes of nonnegative tensors, introduced in the literature, and a full relationship picture about strictly nonnegative tensors with these six classes of nonnegative tensors. We then establish global R-linear convergence of a power method for finding the spectral radius of a nonnegative tensor under the condition of weak irreducibility. We show that for a nonnegative tensor T, there always exists a partition of the index set such that every tensor induced by the partition is weakly irreducible; and the spectral radius of T can be obtained from those spectral radii of the induced tensors. In this way, we develop a convergent algorithm for finding the spectral radius of a general nonnegative tensor without any additional assumption. The preliminary numerical results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we first define the weakly essentially irreducible nonnegative tensors and unify the definitions of essentially positive tensors, weakly positive tensors and generalized weakly positive tensors. Then an algorithm to find the spectral radius of weakly essentially irreducible nonnegative tensors is given based on the implicit translational transformation, and the linear convergence condition of the algorithm is analyzed using the directed graph of the matrix, and finally the computational efficiency of the related algorithms is compared using numerical examples.

Abstract:For decades considerable efforts have been exerted to resolve the inverse eigenvalue problem for non-negative matrices. Yet fundamental issues such as the theory of existence and the practice of computation remain open. Recently, it has been proved that, given an arbitrary (n - 1)-tuple Y = (lambda(2),...,lambda(n)) is an element of Cn-1 whose components are closed under complex conjugation, there exists a unique positive real number R(L), called the minimal realizable spectral radius of L, such that the set {lambda(1),....,lambda(n)} is precisely the spectrum of a certain it x n non-negative matrix with lambda(1) as its spectral radius if and only if lambda(1) greater than or equal to R(L). Employing any existing necessary conditions as a mode of checking criteria, this paper proposes a simple bisection procedure to approximate the location of R(Y). As an immediate application, it offers a quick numerical way to check whether a given n-tuple could be the spectrum of a certain non-negative matrix. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an iterative algorithm to find out the spectral radius of nonnegative tensors. This algorithm is an extension of the smoothing method for finding the largest eigenvalue of a nonnegative matrix \cite{s14}. For nonnegative irreducible tensors, we establish the converges of the algorithm. Finally we report some numerical results and conclude this paper with some remarks.

Abstract:In this paper, a method with parameter is proposed for finding the spectral radius of weakly irreducible nonnegative tensors. What is more, we prove this method has an explicit linear convergence rate for indirectly positive tensors. Interestingly, the algorithm is exactly the NQZ method (proposed by Ng, Qi and Zhou in Finding the largest eigenvalue of a non-negative tensor SIAM J Matrix Anal Appl 31:1090–1099, 2009 ) by taking a specific parameter. Furthermore, we give a modified NQZ method, which has an explicit linear convergence rate for nonnegative tensors and has an error bound for nonnegative tensors with a positive Perron vector. Besides, we promote an inexact power-type algorithm. Finally, some numerical results are reported.

Abstract:A class of matrices, called $\infty $-radial matrices (1-radial matrices) whose spectral radius equals their $\infty $-norm (1-norm), is proposed in this paper and some theoretical results are established to give several necessary and sufficient conditions of this class of matrices. Then, some properties of this class of matrices are presented. Finally, some applications of this class of matrices in the linear discrete dynamic systems are studied such that the zero solution of the linear discrete dynamic systems is asymptotically stable.

Abstract:One of the fundamental problems in multilinear algebra, the minimum ratio between the spectral and Frobenius norms of tensors, has received considerable attention in recent years. While most values are unknown for real and complex tensors, the asymptotic order of magnitude and tight lower bounds have been established. However, little is known about nonnegative tensors. In this paper, we present an almost complete picture of the ratio for nonnegative tensors. In particular, we provide a tight lower bound that can be achieved by a wide class of nonnegative tensors under a simple necessary and sufficient condition, which helps to characterize the extreme tensors and obtain results such as the asymptotic order of magnitude. We show that the ratio for symmetric tensors is no more than that for general tensors multiplied by a constant depending only on the order of tensors, hence determining the asymptotic order of magnitude for real, complex, and nonnegative symmetric tensors. We also find that the ratio is in general different to the minimum ratio between the Frobenius and nuclear norms for nonnegative tensors, a sharp contrast to the case for real tensors and complex tensors.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm for computing the spectral radii of symmetric nonnegative tensors. In particular, by this proposed algorithm, we are able to obtain the spectral radii of weakly reducible symmetric nonnegative tensors without requiring the partition of the tensors. As we know, it is very costly to determine the partition for large-sized weakly reducible tensors. Numerical results are reported to show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and also able to compute the spectral radii of large-sized tensors. As an application, we present an algorithm for testing the positive definiteness of Z-tensors. By this algorithm, it is guaranteed to determine the positive definiteness for any Z-tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we present several sharper upper bounds for the M-spectral radius and Z-spectral radius based on the eigenvalues of some unfolding matrices of nonnegative tensors. Meanwhile, we show that these bounds could be tight for some special tensors. For a general nonnegative tensor which can be transformed into a matrix, we prove the maximal singular value of this matrix is an upper bound of its Z-eigenvalues. Some examples are provided to show these proposed bounds greatly improve some existing ones.

Abstract:Let Mn(R) be the linear space of all n×n matrices over the real field R. For any A∈Mn(R), let ρ(A) and ‖A‖∞ denote the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A, respectively. By introducing a class of transformations φa on Mn(R), we show that, for any A∈Mn(R), ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0. If A∈Mn(R) is nonnegative, we prove that ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if and only if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0, and ρ(A)=‖A‖∞ if and only if the transformation φ‖A‖∞ preserves the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A. As an application, we investigate a class of linear discrete dynamic systems in the form of X(k+1)=AX(k). The asymptotical stability of the zero solution of the system is established by a simple algebraic method.
