Abstract:A series of Mn-complexes with tetradentate N4 ligands, introducing aromatic groups into 2-pyridylmethyl positions of N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (mep), N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)cyclohexane-trans-diamine (mcp), have been synthesized and applied for epoxidation of olefins using H2O2 as the oxidant. The Mn-complexes still possessed an octahedral mononuclear structure in a cis-α topology. These complexes showed good regioselectivity, high yields and turnover frequency (even up to 228,000h−1) with low catalyst loading (0.1–0.01mol%) for epoxidation of a family of olefins (including internal aromatic olefins, internal and terminal aliphatic olefins and diolefins).

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids such as dialkyl (or alkyl) di-(tri-) hydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrahydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide and allcylhydroxyethyl or dihydroxyethyl immidazolium hydroxide were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR. These ionic liquids containing hydroxyls were used as catalysts for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The results showed that benzylmethyldihydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide (BzMDH) is an effect catalyst with raised catalytic activity and high selectivity to DMC. The effect of hydroxyl groups on the activation of methanol and CO2 were explored. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of this synthetic reaction was discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:AbstractBACKGROUND: Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) can be used effectively as an environmentally benign substitute for highly toxic phosgene and dimethyl sulfate in carbonylation and methylation, as well as a promising octane booster owing to its high oxygen content. Two‐step transesterification from epoxide, methanol, and CO2 is widely used in the bulk production of DMC. However, major disadvantages of this process are high energy consumption, and high investment and production costs. A one pot synthesis of DMC from carbon dioxide, methanol, and epoxide was, therefore, developed. But the yields of DMC are below 70% due to the thermodynamic limitation.RESULTS: Electrochemical synthesis of DMC was conducted with platinum electrodes from methanol, CO2 and propylene oxide in an ionic liquid was conducted. The bmimBr (1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide)‐methanol‐propylene oxide system with CO2 bubbling allows DMC to be effectively synthesized and a high yield (75.5%) was achieved.CONCLUSION: In this electrolysis, redox reactions of substrates, CO2, methanol, and propylene oxide, on Pt electrodes were carried out, producing the activated particles, CH3O−, CH3OH+, CO2− and PO−, resulting in the effective synthesis of DMC with a 75.5% yield in an ionic liquid (bmimBr). Finally, a mechanism for this synthesis reaction was proposed, which is very different from those reported in the literature. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:1,4-Dioxane and its derivatives are a kind of important chemicals, which can be produced via dehydrative cyclization of vicinal diols catalyzed by acid or Lewis acid catalysts, but generally suffering from their inherent shortcomings. Herein, we report a hydrogen-bonding catalyzed approach for synthesis of 1,4-dioxanes from vicinal diols in ionic liquid under metal-free conditions. The ILs possessing cation hydrogen-bond donor and anion hydrogen-bond acceptor (e.g., 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, [HO-EtMIm][OTf]) were found to be effective for the reaction. Especially, [HO-EtMIm][OTf] showed the best performance among the tested ILs, even better than H2SO4, affording a series of 1,4-dioxanes in high yields and excellent selectivity under mild conditions (e.g., 120 C). Mechanism investigation indicates that the IL cation and anion as the hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor, respectively, can activate the C-O and O-H bonds of diols via hydrogen-bonding, which synergistically realizes the dehydrative cyclization of vicinal diols to generate 1,4-dioxanes. In addition, this IL could be reused 5 times without activity loss. This work provides a simple, green route to produce 1,4-dioxanes, which may have promising applications.

Abstract:Developing an effective and selective catalyst for epoxide hydration under low water/epoxide ratios and atmos-pheric pressure is still a challenge. Through tuning the anion, azolate ILs with different basicities were used in the hydration of epoxides. The results showed that the basicity has a great effect on conversion and selectivity, where [Emim][Triz] exhibited high conversion and selectivity under 1 bar CO2, leading to the yield of 99%. Furthermore, these ionic liquids could be used four times and retain good catalytic activity. Spectroscopic investigations, isotope labeling experiments, and quantum chemical calculations indicated that high yield was derived from synergetic catalysis by an azolate ionic liquid, which was more favorable than the hydration process catalyzed by bromine and organic bases.

Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The acetalization reactions of isobutyraldehyde with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) for the synthesis of 2,4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane were carried out under mild reaction conditions using four water-stable Brønsted-acidic task-specific ionic liquids ([HMIM]BF4, —SO3H functionalized acidic ionic liquid, —COOH functionalized acidic ionic liquid, [NMP][HSO4]) as environmentally benign catalysts for the first time. The process is highly effective and very selective. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid with the two acid sites (IL-3) exhibited the most excellent catalytic performance under mild reaction conditions. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid could be conveniently separated from the product and easily recycled in subsequent runs.

Abstract:Polyol esters are abundant bio‐based resources. Integration of polyol esters into the production chain of fine chemicals would reduce carbon emission and improve the sustainability of the chemical industry. An efficient synthetic route towards phenoxyethanols was developed through catalytic hydroxyethylation of phenols with ethylene glycol diacetate as the reagent. This method showed the potential of ethylene glycol diester as a safe and sustainable substitute for ethylene oxide, a useful but toxic reagent. A variety of phenoxyethanol esters were produced in high yield under simple catalytic conditions. Mechanism studies revealed the reaction underwent a neighboring group participation process.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-catalysed hydroformylation of epoxides to -hydroxyaldehydes was developed. Compared to previous works this methodology proceeds under significantly milder conditions (70 °C; 40 bar of CO/H2 = 1:1). Crucial for the activity of the cobalt catalyst is the use of phosphine oxides, especially tricyclohexylphosphine oxide, as cheap and easily available promoters. The hydroformylation reaction can be easily combined with a consecutive one-pot hydrogenation of the in situ generated β-hydroxyaldehydes to produce directly 1,3-diols starting from epoxides. The rapid formation of a mononuclear acyl cobalt carbonyl complex as an intermediate was observed by in situ FTIR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Functionalizing biomass-derived furanic chemicals is of great importance towards biorefinery processes but challenging, especially working at elevated substrate concentrations. We herein report the intervention of 1,4-dioxane co-solvent availably to catalyze hydroxymethylation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) in formalin over Hβ zeolite, giving high yield to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF), a versatile building block. Impressively, the facilitating effect of 1,4-dioxane on DHMF production became more pronounced with increasing FA feeding concentration, and the yield raised from 19.5 % to 67.8 % from a high FA concentration of 10 wt%. The 1,4-dioxane served not only as a catcher of formaldehyde hydrate to access substrate FA, but also as a shield to restrain undesirable condensation side-reactions. The developed protocol demonstrated an excellent universality in boosting the hydroxymethylation of electrondrawing-group-free furanic molecules (e.g., furan, 2-methylfuran). The understanding of these solvation effects can be employed to effectively manipulate and improve the hydroxymethylation of furanic compounds.

Abstract:Direct conversion of the readily available alkyl bromides and alcohols to value-added epoxides using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under mild reaction conditions has been developed. Benzyl and allyl bromides, and activated and unactivated alcohols all proceeded smoothly to give epoxides in high to excellent yield. Dimethyl sulfide, generated by DMSO oxidations, was in situ elaborated to form the substituted dimethyl sulfonium ylide species that participates in the Corey–Chaykovsky epoxidation in a domino and one-pot fashion, respectively.

Abstract:Addition of DMSO is found to greatly accelerate the aqueous hydrolysis of organohalides to alcohols, providing a neutral, more efficient, milder and more economic process. Mechanistic studies using 18 O-DMSO and 18 O-H2 O showed that, contrary to the opinion that DMSO works as a dipolar solvent to enhance water's nucleophilicity, the accelerating effect comes from a complete oxygen transfer from DMSO to organohalides through generation of ROS+ Me2 ⋅X- salts through C-O bond formation, followed by O-S bond disassociative hydrolysis of ROS+ Me2 ⋅X- with water. This method is applicable to a wide range of organohalides and thus may have potential for practical industrial application, owing to easy recovery of DMSO from the H2 O/DMSO mixture by regular vacuum rectification.

Abstract:Cation exchange resins are widely utilized in polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) synthesis due to considerable catalytic performance. However, low specific surface area and strong hydrophilicity hinder the generation of long-chain PODEn and industrial applications. Herein, polymer-based solid acids with adjustable textural and hydrophobic properties were prepared by hydrothermal method. Results indicated that the use of tetrahydrofuran and water as solvents in the preparation process resulted in a significant increase in the specific surface area and pore size distribution of the catalysts. Meanwhile, hydrophobic catalysts prepared by copolymerization under optimal solvent exhibited superior performance over commercial resins. Moreover, two reaction pathways for the reaction of hemiformal (HF1, CH3OCH2OH) with formaldehyde and methanol were investigated by DFT calculations. The intermediate formed by combining sulfonic acid group with carbocation is favorable for embedding formaldehyde in HF1 to promote chain growth, while the direct attack of methanol on HF1 is conducive to chain termination.

Abstract:In organic synthesis, incorporating two functional groups into the carbon‐carbon double bond of α,β‐unsaturated amides is challenging due to the electron‐deficient nature of the olefin moiety. Although a few examples of dihydroxylation of α,β‐unsaturated amides have been demonstrated, producing cis‐1,2‐diols using either highly toxic OsO4 or other specialized metal reagents in organic solvents, they are limited to several specific amides. We describe herein a general and one‐pot direct synthesis of trans‐1,2‐diols from electron‐deficient α,β‐unsaturated amides through dihydroxylation using oxone as a dual‐role reagent in water. This reaction does not require any metal catalyst and produces non‐hazardous and nontoxic K2SO4 as the sole byproduct. Moreover, epoxidation products could also be selectively formed by adjusting the reaction conditions. By the strategy, the intermediates of Mcl‐1 inhibitor and antiallergic bioactive molecule can be synthesized in one pot. The gram‐scale synthesis of trans‐1,2‐diol which is isolated and purified by recrystallization further shows the potential applications of this new reaction in organic synthesis.

Abstract:An efficient methodology for the synthesis of symmetrical methylene diesters was developed through direct reaction of various aromatic carboxylates with 1,n-dihaloalkanes under solvent-free conditions. This strategy offers a high product yield, facile work-up and purification, and an environmentally friendly approach to obtain long-chain methylene carboxylate scaffolds with increased diversity.

Abstract:A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from epoxide, carbon dioxide, and methanol under low initial pressure. The key to the successful transformation is the use of a bicomponent catalytic system composed of a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid and an alkali carbonate. This bicomponent catalytic system demonstrated excellent reusability in four runs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a 64% yield of DMC from propylene oxide and an 81% yield of DMC from ethylene oxide were obtained.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Wells–Dawson type Heteropolyacids (H6+nP2Mo18−nVnO62) (n=0–2, 4) have proved to be efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the reaction of epoxides with carbonyl compounds to form 1,3-dioxolane derivatives. Especially, when H7P2Mo17VO62 was used to catalyze the reaction between acetone and epoxypropane, the selectivity to 1,3-dioxolane reached to 93.3% with nearly complete conversion of epoxide and 1.1×104h−1 of TOF.
