Abstract:Titania-based nanocomposites have recently attracted much attention due to their unique structure and properties. Titania has been known to have three crystal phases: brookite, anatase and rutile. The anatase titania has the highest photoactivity than the other two phases. Meanwhile Ohtani et al. [1] reported that amorphous titania has a negligible photoactivity compared to the crystalline titania. Much work has been conducted on the optimization of catalytic properties of titania used in the photodegradation of organic pollutants in water by either using modified titania or thin titania films. Many researches indicated that dopants, such as many oxides, can effectively suppress the transformation of anatase into rutile by improving the onset transformation temperature [2]. Silica-titania mixed oxide is considered a potential candidate because it is used as not only a good photocatalyst itself but also a support material for other chemical reaction catalysts [3, 4]. 30SiO2/TiO2 powders (30 denotes the weight percent of silica) were prepared by sol-gel process. Ti(OBu n )4 and TEOS were used as precursors of titania and silica respectively. After TEOS was stirred in a mixture solution of pure ethanol, distilled water and hydrochloric acid for 1 h, Ti(OBu n )4 was added slowly into the mixture. The sol of SiO2/TiO2 was obtained after another two hours’ vigorous stirring and cooled to room temperature. The gel was calcined at different temperatures and then ground into fine powders. The distilled water solution of methyl orange (with a concentration of 25 mg/L) was chosen for photodegradation. 0.2 g powders were added into 40 ml of the above solution with vigorous agitation under the mercury light. A 756MC UV-VIS spectrometer was used to record the change of concentration of the methyl orange. FT-IR spectra was obtained by a Bruker EQUINOX55 spectrometer. TEM and HREM observations were carried out using a Jeol-2010 electron microscope. The XRD patterns were made in a D/max3A diffractometer with Cu Kα radiation. The crystallite size of powders was determined by Scherrer equation. Electron spin resonance measurements were made with a Bruker paramagnetic spectrometer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of the sample were obtained with an NP-1 using the Mg Kα excitation source and the binding energies referenced to the C1s hydrocarbon line at 284.6 eV. The atomic ratios were obtained by intergrating the areas under the peak. Photodegradation for methyl orange with 30SiO2/ TiO2 samples calcinated at different temperature under UV irradiation is illustrated in Fig. 1. The results of other samples heated at temperatures higher than 850 ◦ C were not shown in this figure because further increase of the calcination temperature decreased the decomposition rate. It can be seen that decomposition rate of the samples fired at 400 ◦ C and 500 ◦ Ci s low. When the calcination temperature was further increased to 600 ◦ C, the higher photoactivity than Degussa P25’s was obtained. The sample heated at 800 ◦ C has the best photoactivity about 2 times higher than the Degussa P25.
