Abstract:The bus in a SoC plays an important role and the arbiter is adopted to solve bus contentions. We propose a novel arbitration algorithm, adaptive arbitration algorithm, in this paper. The experimental results show that the novel algorithm meets both priority and equity in solving bus bandwidth allocation.

Abstract:As more IP blocks are integrated on single chip, arbitration algorithm plays the critical role in the shared bus system. In this paper, the basic principle of the SOC bus arbitration is introduced and some common arbitration algorithms are described and analyzed. For the different complicated system, multi- lay arbitration algorithms are discussed and analyzed based on the single lay al- gorithm.

Abstract:High ratio of performance against cost is a desirable feature of bus-shared multiprocessors systems. However, with the increasingly rapid growth of processor speed, the communication bandwidth and reliability of this system has become an essential factor affecting parallel processing. In the way for gaining improvement of overall performance of this system, bus arbitration is at the core position. The transaction-buffered time-variable priority arbitration scheme based on a novel arbitration model, distributed uniform priority model, is presented in this paper. The transaction-buffered arbitration mechanism uses the system bus property to raise the system's use ratio, which is very profitable for real-time applications and heavy bus load environment in parallel processing system. The virtual token ring and time-variable priority policies guarantee that shared fairly bus resources are accessed fairly by all processor nodes. Multi-byte priority policy makes scalable priority easier. Simulation and implementation work verified the feasibility of the presented arbitration scheme.
An Arbitration Approach of Efficient Bandwidth Allocation and Low Latency for SoC Communication

Abstract:A novel arbitration approach for SoC communication is presented.It provides fine-grained bandwidth allocation which is based on dynamically updated records of communication status.The arbiters in NoC routers,multi-port DRAM controllers and shared buses can adopt this approach to improve system performance.This proposed approach is evaluated with a metric called bandwidth shortage,which reflects the closeness of the actual bandwidth allocation to an optimal one.Experimental results reveal that this arbitration approach can reduce the bandwidth shortage decreases by 13%,and shorten the communication latency by 37.5%.Furthermore,the results of hardware implementation show that it is efficient in area and timing for large-and medium-scale SoC designs.

Abstract:As technology scales towards deep submicron, the integration of more than one processor on a chip is becoming possible. The communication architecture is becoming the bottleneck for multi-processor SoC, and efficient arbiter is able to solve the contentions due to simultaneous request accesses in shared bus systems to prevent system performance degradation. This paper presents a simple adaptive dynamic arbiter that can adjust the bandwidth proportion assigned to every processor automatically to avoid starvation problem in multi-processor SoC environment. The simulation results show that the proposed one could reduce 68% task execution time, decrease the bus request latency of a processor by 78% and provide better control of the communication bandwidth allocated to individual processor than convention arbiters

Abstract:To study the arbitration efficiency on MPSoC performance under different requirements of applications, four different mechanisms were considered, which were round robin, fix priority, mix priority and advanced weighed random arithmetics. Some experiments were done under a scalable MPSoC simulation environment with the support software that included OS, and some important conclusions were given: (1) The weighed random arithmetics was outstanding in the MPSoC platform with OS under independent task; (2) Round Robin arithmetic showed better best performance in the MPSoC platform without OS under pipelined task; (3) Round Robin arithmetic showed steady performance under different styles of communication task and satisfies the requirement of real time; (4) Mix priority arithmetic was fairish when the bus was under high load condition. And besides, this paper presented that the arbitration arithmetic had an effect on the real-time character of the system.

Abstract:With the development of SoC technology, bus arbitration has become the core issue in computing systems. This paper discusses four scheduling algorithms having existed, which are FCFS (First Come First Served), SF (Shortest Job/Process First), HRRN (Highest Response Ratio Next) and HPF (Highest Priority First), compares their performance in runtime and latency, and points out their limitations in application. Then new algorithm for arbitration as New HRRN is proposed, which is designed to overcome the shortcomings of the former algorithms. Through experiments, the scheduling algorithm is tested, and proved to be successful, because it could perform well not only in latency, but also in bandwidth.

Abstract:In the system of multi-core SoC, many specifications need to be considered to optimize interconnect bus architecture, such as the arbitration mechanism, latency, area and power consumption. This paper proposes a reconfigurable design of flexible-arbitrated crossbar to analyze the relevant factors and improve the performance and practicality with the reconfigurable implementation. Two priority matching algorithms are proposed in the design to meet more flexible-arbitrated choices for the application scenarios of multi-core SoC. Moreover, the static and dynamic reconfiguration proposed in the paper provides a valuable reference for the design of bus structure in SoC systems. Compared with the original design in the case analysis, the reconfigurable design achieves 23.3% smaller area, 15.7% less latency, and 23% power saving.
An Optimized Bus Scheduling Scheme Based on Specific Application

Abstract:An application-specific bus scheduling scheme was proposed in this paper. Two-fold optimization was considered in this scheme based on the communication events collected by system modeling and simulation. The first one, which had higher priority, was real time constraints of tasks while the other was making use of bus idle time to transfer data as much as possible. A configurable optimization parameter α was also proposed for the tradeoff between the total bus time consumed and the extra on-chip buffer requirements. This scheme was implemented in a dual-core SoC (System on Chip) for the H.264/AVC decoder and compared with RR (Round Robin), FP (Fixed Priority) and SBA (Slack Based Arbitration) schemes. The results showed that the proposed scheme had an average 16.6%, 13.2% and 9.7% less bus time when α was set to 0.5. The number of missed real time constraints tasks was 59.4% less than the SBA scheme, which was the closest to our scheme. The relationship between α and the extra on-chip buffer cost showed that under worst condition (α = 0), it was only 435 bytes.

Abstract:Modeling process is the core of modern instrument system. Multi-function, multi-parameter, high-performance and high-reliability are directions of it. And the architecture of multiprocessors based on shared bus is an advisable architecture. The article has studied the bus arbitration mechanism of multiprocessor system architecture based on the characteristics of modern instrument. We selected the distributed arbiter and dynamic scheme to implement the target bus arbiter. For adoption subsection- priority policy and n-bit self-selection network circuit, the bus arbiter not only has the characteristic of fairness, rationality, flexibility and extension, but also improves the reliability and real time ability. It will satisfy the degraded operation request of modern medical instrument. The bus arbiter hardware and discusses the implementation of a prototype were studied in detail, and the results are fit for modern medical instrument especially.

Abstract:This work presents an adaptive resource scheduling policy (ARS) for local workloads of internet-based computation on SMT platform, which can dynamically adjust resource assignment among threads according to changing workloads behavior and real-time performance by taking in-flight performance as feedback to drive resource assignment decision. The adaptive mechanism and similarity control of assignment candidates function together to impulse persistent resource scheduling in changing program environment. Simulation results show that ARS achieves much improvement both in throughput and fairness metric. Meanings and settings of important ARS parameters are also discussed.

Abstract:Current system-on-chip(SoC) communication architectures are limited by lack of service quality control over different types of transactions from the same initiator, leading to poor bandwidth or latency performance,and lack of a mechanism to assign priorities to bus components.This paper presents FineBus,a communication architecture that provides fine-grained control over bandwidths and latencies. The technique classifies the bus requests into ports while assigning each port a metric with a distribution according to need mechanism.This architecture provides fine-grained quality of service(QoS for communication transactions.Experimental results show that the architecture provides better quality as the system's communication requirements change than previous architectures.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel mechanism of on chip interconnect based on MultiLayer AHB Lite standard is proposed. On one hand it provides the feature that multiple masters are able to access the bus simultaneously as long as there is no competition for the same slave. On the other hand this mechanism is easy to scale, reuse and consumes less resources. Distributed address decoding and master arbitration are employed. Each slave has its own data selection module with a built-in arbiter attached. All the masters are connected to the master interfaces of the data selection module and the module decides which master gains the access of the slave when a bus competition occurs. External modules can be attached to each data selection module, which makes it possible to employ different master arbitration strategies for each slave. This interconnect mechanism has ultra low latency and low arbitration costs, hence is suitable for embedded systems with strong real time requirement. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Abstract:This paper presents a new communication architecture with fine-grained control over bandwidths and latencies. The architecture is designed to address the following limitations of current communication architectures: (i) lack of the service quality control over different types of transactions from the some initiator, leading to poor bandwidth or latency, performance, and (ii) lack of mechanism for assigning priorities to bus components. Our technique is based on classifying the bus requests into ports and a mechanism of assigning every port a metric, which determines the probability of accessing the bits during arbitration. We illustrate the designing issues and tradeoffs of this architecture. Experimental results show that the new architecture can better suit the system's changing communication requirements.

Abstract:Network-on-chip (NoC) has emerged as an on-chip interconnect technology that overcomes the constraints of traditional bus-based system. Virtual-channel router with transmission priority plays an important role especially in many-core chip multiprocessors (CMP) executing different applications. In this paper, we propose two arbitration optimization methods based on virtual-channel router, consisting of scoring crossbar arbitration and arbitration interception. The design has been implemented on the Xilinx ZCU102 FPGA board, and the results show that our work outperforms the traditional virtual-channel router in the NoC while reducing logic resource by approximately 10 % and achieving 2x better performance.

Abstract:Multimedia System-on-Chip(M-SoC) is a typical multi-task system with heavy data traffic between on-chip processing elements and off-chip memories.How to resolve the multiple memory access requests efficiently becomes a key issue in M-SoC bus design.After analyzing the traffic characteristics of different data transfer channels in detail,we propose a bus scheduling policy based on multi-channel direct memory access(DMA),and employ it in a single chip real-time audio/video decoding system.Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that,the proposed policy can arbitrate multiple off-chip memory access requests,schedule the media data transfers effectively and is well suited for integration in M-SoC chip-level bus.

Abstract:The Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a communication infrastructure designed to integrate various components of a System-on-Chip (SoC) and connect multi-core processors. In on-chip networks, routing is a process that determines how a data packet should move from the source node to the destination node. Essentially, a routing algorithm configures the internal connections of a switch to establish communication towards the destination node by examining the source, destination and the current node addresses. After routing, multiple input channels may simultaneously request access to an output channel based on the routing results. In such cases, an arbitration strategy needs to prioritize access to the output channel for the requesting input channels. This research presents an arbitration strategy called HTPA (Hybrid Traffic Pattern-Aware arbitration) that utilizes local and global information. HTPA also uses a hybrid arbitration scheme consisting of a simple arbitration and a complex switch arbitration. Additionally, it uses age-related techniques to increase the fairness of arbitration and prevent starvation. The proposed method considers certain priorities for accessing output channels based on the distance to the destination, the number of available paths from the current node to the destination, and the traffic intensity parameter. Evaluations were conducted under uniform, transient, hot spot, and MPEG4 traffic patterns and the proposed method demonstrated a reduction in average packet delay compared to RoundRobin, CAIS, and DTIS methods by 79.46%, 71.35%, and 19.91%, respectively, across various traffic patterns.

Abstract:In multi-core heterogeneous systems, communication on the data bus/NoC (Network-on-Chip) is complex. To ensure low-latency transmission of high-level messages, such as control messages, configuration instructions, and status information, while maintaining the efficiency of data bus/NoC transmission, we propose the concept of a message bus. In this paper, we present a lightweight and high-throughput asynchronous message bus capable of receiving and forwarding messages from different synchronous domains. A Quasi-Synchronous communication mechanism is proposed, where flits from the transmitter can be transmitted at fixed intervals without waiting for the ready signal from the receiver. This resolves the additional latency introduced by asynchronous handshaking, particularly in long-wire transmissions. Instead of flit-level handshaking, we introduce a packet-level flow control mechanism to avoid data overflow. Furthermore, we propose a novel Asynchronous Blocking Retransmission Buffer (ABRB) to address the communication congestion where subsequent packets are blocked by preceding ones. The packets can be sequentially written into the ABRB, enabling partial parallel transmission. For various benchmarks, the proposed asynchronous message bus achieves significant performance and energy consumption improvements compared to the synchronous baseline, at the cost of some additional area overhead and more design effort.

An Optimized Solution for Cross-Domain System Bus Transaction Processing

Abstract:Since multi-core processor and System-On-Chip (SOC) have developed fast in recent years, the interconnection bus becomes a key factor to system performance. Recently, it is reported that for most desktop and embedded systems, bus bandwidth has not been fully exploited, and the data transfer efficiency is low. In this paper, we show that the frequent cross-domain bus transaction is the main bottleneck of I/O performance promotion. Then based on a Hyper Transport (HT) 3.0 bus controller design, we propose an optimization scheme which includes a pipelined design methodology for cross-domain bus transaction and asynchronous FIFO designs using Globally Ratiochronous Locally Synchronous (GRLS) technology. The experiment shows that our solution increases the HT bus read and write bandwidths about 34.8% and 13.5% respectively, and it reduces the latency about 40%. Although our solution is based on well known system buses technologies - AMBA AXI and HT bus technologies, it can be easily implemented in systems with other bus technologies.

Abstract:The performance of an on-chip interconnection architecture used for communication between IP cores depends on the efficiency of its bus architecture. Any bus architecture having advantages of faster bus clock speed, extra data transfer cycle, improved bus width and throughput is highly desirable for a low cost, reduced time-to-market and efficient System-on-Chip (SoC). This paper presents a survey of WISHBONE bus architecture and its comparison with three other on-chip bus architectures viz. Advanced Micro controller Bus Architecture (AMBA) by ARM, CoreConnect by IBM and Avalon by Altera. The WISHBONE Bus Architecture by Silicore Corporation appears to be gaining an upper edge over the other three bus architecture types because of its special performance parameters like the use of flexible arbitration scheme and additional data transfer cycle (Read-Modify-Write cycle). Moreover, its IP Cores are available free for use requiring neither any registration nor any agreement or license.

Multiple-Phase Bus Signal Priority Strategy for Arterial Coordination Intersection

Abstract:In order to reduce the bus delay due to the meeting of several buses from different phases at an intersection with arterial coordination, a multiple-phase bus signal priority (MPBSP) strategy without damaging the coordination of green wave band is proposed. In this strategy, "proximity principle" is presented to settle the conflicts among priority requests for multiple phases and determine the optimal priority sequence. Then, a multiple-phase bus priority control procedure is established. As the bus with highest priority may belong to different phases, the green extension and the green-early-start are adopted to respectively establish the coordination phase and non-coordination phase BSP (Bus Signal Priority) algorithms. Finally, by taking two neighboring intersections on arterial roads in a city as case studies, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified through VAP in VISSIM. In addition, the MPBSP strategy is compared with the non-BSP and single phase BSP ones. It is found that the MPBSP strategy can reduce all the bus delays of road networks more efficiently and limit the increase of average delay of general traffic.
