Abstract:An environmentally benign SBA-15-supported amorphous nickel boride alloy catalyst, prepared by a novel reductant–impregnation method, exhibits superior activity, selectivity, and stability in the selective hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone (eAQ) to 2-ethylanthrahydroquinone (H2eAQ), which is the dominating process for the production of hydrogen peroxide in industrial scale. The unique characters of the amorphous alloy as well as the pore structure of the mesoporous SBA-15 molecular sieve are crucial for the excellent catalytic behavior of the title catalyst.

Abstract:Liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone to 2-ethylanthrahydroquinone has been investigated over Raney Ni, nanosized amorphous Ni–B, and chromium-modified Ni–B catalysts. It has been found that the amorphous Ni–B and chromium-modified Ni–B catalysts exhibited superior selectivity, whereas the chromium-modified Ni–B catalysts had better activity and selectivity than unmodified Ni–B catalyst. Based on the characterizations, the higher selectivity of the amorphous catalysts is ascribed to the dominant population of the strongly bound hydrogen, which is not reactive for the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring, along with the repulsive interaction between the aromatic ring and the electron-rich Ni due to electron donation from alloying B. The addition of chromium decreased the particle size of the amorphous catalysts, which is beneficial for the improvement of activity. Moreover, surface chromium oxide can function as a Lewis acid, which lowers the πCO* orbital of the reactant, favoring a carbonyl group-bonded configuration. The best selectivity was achieved over the Ni–Cr–B2 catalyst, where the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring was thoroughly blocked before the saturation of the carbonyl groups.

Abstract:The effects of pore structure on the reaction rates and selectivities in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone over NiB amorphous alloy catalysts prepared by the reductant-impregnation method were studied using regular (HMS, MCM-41, and SBA-15) and commercial mesoporous silicas as supports. The composition, particle size, and location of the NiB particles were profoundly influenced by the pore structure of the supports. It is found that the location of the NiB particles depended on the pore size of the supports, whereas the uniformity of particle size was related to the interaction between the NiB particles and the supports. The hydrogenation rate was much faster on NiB catalysts with pore diameters exceeding 5 nm than on the narrow-pore catalysts, whereas the selectivity to 2-ethyldihydroanthraquinone, the carbonyl group hydrogenation product, was higher on NiB catalysts supported on regular mesoporous silicas. The best activity and selectivity were achieved when using SBA-15 as the support, which is attributable to the formation of more uniform active sites due to the unique pore structure of SBA-15.

Abstract:A novel skeletal Ni catalyst, prepared by alkali leaching of a Ni–Al alloy obtained by the rapid quenching technique, exhibited higher selectivity in hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone to “active quinones” than that of the Raney Ni catalyst originating from a conventional alloy. It is suggested that the structural defects of the rapidly quenched alloy lead to a high population of the strongly bound hydrogen, which is essential for selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group.

Abstract:1-aminoanthraquinone has numerous applications in chemical industry, for example, it is an important intermediate for producing anthraquinone dyes. In this work, Pd/NiO/C, Pd/CoO x /C, and Pd/NiO-CoO x /C (C-carbon black) are prepared by room-temperature hydrazine hydrate and replacement reduction methods. All as-prepared catalysts have been characterized by XRD, SEM , TEM, HRTEM, XPS, STEM-EDX elemental mapping and line-scanning et al., The Pd-related species are highly dispersed on the nickel, cobalt or nickel-cobalt oxide nanoparticles (NPs), the interaction of Pd–NiO (or CoO x , NiO-CoO x ) is present. Pd/NiO-CoO x /C provides 99.2 % conversion of 1-nitroanthraquinone and 91.0 % selectivity to 1-aminoanthraquinone for 1-nitroanthraquinone hydrogenation under the following reaction conditions: H 2 pressure-3.0 MPa, 60 °C, 4 h. The catalytic behaviors of Pd/NiO-CoO x /C for 1-nitroanthraquinone hydrogenation are much better than Pd/NiO/C and Pd/CoO x /C mainly due to the interaction of Pd–NiO-CoO x , synergy effect of Pd and NiO-CoO x , and high Pd dispersion.

Abstract:Supported Ni-B amorphous alloy catalysts were prepared by a reductant-impregnation method using commercial SiO2,γ-Al2O3,and active carbon(AC) as supports. The effects of the supports on the texture,thermal stability,and catalytic properties of the supported Ni-B catalysts in selective hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone(eAQ) to H2O2 were studied. It was found that the crystallization tempera-ture of the supported Ni-B catalysts is much higher than ultrafine Ni-B and the stability sequence is Ni-B/AC Ni-B/SiO2 Ni-B/γ-Al2O3. The catalytic activity of the supported Ni-B catalysts is in the order Ni-B/SiO2 Ni-B/γ-Al2O3 Ni-B/AC,and the C=O selectivity is Ni-B/AC Ni-B/SiO2 Ni-B/γ-Al2O3. The different activity of the supported Ni-B catalysts can be attributed to the deviation in the active surface area of the catalysts and the different pore structure of the supports. The different selectivity can be attributed to the different uni-formity of the active sites on the catalysts and the different surface properties of the supports.

Abstract:Skeletal Ni catalysts (RQ Ni) prepared by alkali leaching of rapidly quenched Ni–Al alloys have been systematically characterized, focusing on the effect of the cooling rate during alloy preparation. It is found that the residual Al content, texture, structure, surface hydrogen species, and active sites of the RQ Ni catalysts can be controlled by the cooling rate of the Ni–Al alloys. In liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone (eAQ), the RQ Ni catalyst with higher cooling rate favors hydrogenation of the carbonyl group and retards the saturation of the aromatic ring and the formation of the degradation products, thus leading to a higher yield of H2O2. Based on the characterizations, the improved selectivity is ascribed to the dominant population of strongly chemisorbed hydrogen, which is inactive for the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring, along with the electronic interaction between residual metallic Al and Ni, favoring a carbonyl group-bonded configuration of eAQ on the catalyst.

Abstract:Manipulating the surface acidic/basic property and pore structure of support are two effective approaches to increase catalytic performance of Pd-based catalyst in anthraquinone (eAQ) hydrogenation. Herein, to combine two promoting approaches, array-typed NiO/Al supported Pd catalyst were synthesized. By regulating preparation method, three Ni(OH)2/Al support precursors showed different morphologies of nest-like, face-to-face packed and dandelion-like structure, respectively. After loading Pd, three Pd/NiO/Al catalysts exhibited different catalytic performance in eAQ hydrogenation, among which the nest-like catalyst possessed the highest H2O2 space time yield of 107.5 g gPd−1 h−1 with > 99% selectivity to active anthraquinone. Detailed characterizations were performed to investigate the pore structure, basic property and electronic structure caused by different morphologies of catalysts, to explain the structure-performance relationship. Specifically, on the basis of ensuring effective collision of reactant molecules, the outer opening pores (20–100 nm) could decrease diffusion barriers of eAQ/eAQH2, which improves active site accessibility for eAQ and benefits desorption of eAQH2. In addition, suitable amount of weak basic sites Ni2+–OH with high electronic density appropriately improves surface electronic density of Pd NPs, which moderately enhances H2 activation/dissociation but could not lead to over hydrogenation to give deeply hydrogenated byproducts.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQL) is a crucial intermediate and fragment in chemical synthesis, but its production from quinoline (QL) selective hydrogenation in heterogeneous catalysis mainly relies on noble-metal-based catalysts. Therefore, the design of catalysts composed of earth-abundant elements for this reaction is meaningful. In this work, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we found the binding energy of QL to be a suitable descriptor to illustrate the general activity trend of metallic catalysts for QL hydrogenation. Among the screened bimetallic alloys composed of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu elements, we computationally identified Ni3Fe as a promising candidate catalyst with high stability, while our systematic mechanistic calculations showed the low energy barriers for each hydrogenation step. Our established DFT-based mean-field microkinetic model indicates a much higher turnover frequency for py-THQL production on the Ni3Fe(111) surface than on the experimentally reported high-performance AuPd3(111) surface. This work not only identified a valuable descriptor for the rational catalyst screening for the complex QL hydrogenation reaction but also theoretically predicted a cost-effective Ni3Fe catalyst for the hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation are of vital importance for the synthesis of various important chemicals and intermediates. Herein we developed a simple method for preparing a highly efficient Ni-MoC x nanocomposite catalyst via temperature-programmed carburization of a polyoxometalate precursor. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses indicate that the resulting mesoporous nanocomposite catalyst is made up of well-dispersed metallic nickel particles embedded in a MoC x matrix. This catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity (> 99%) in the hydrogenation of various substituted nitroaromatics to corresponding anilines. The high efficiency is attributed to the intimate contact of the constituents favoring electron transfer and hydrogen adsorption. Dihydrogen is physisorbed on the carbide support and dissociates on the nickel particles, as evidenced by Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra, density functional theory (DFT), and hydrogen—deuterium exchange. The remarkable catalytic performance of the catalyst could be traced back to the synergistic interaction between the Ni particles and the carbide support. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and DFT simulations indicated that the adsorption/activation of the nitro group is favored compared to that of other substituents at the aromatic ring. In recyclability tests, the Ni-MoC x nanocomposite showed no significant loss of catalytic performance in seven consecutive runs, indicating its robust nature.

Abstract:Pd nanoparticles (NP) immobilized on nitrogen (N)-doped boehmite@C composites (CCB) with enhanced catalytic performance for 2-ethyl-9,10 anthraquinone hydrogenation were successfully prepared by a mild vapor-phase hydrothermal method. The characterization results showed that the phase structures, morphologies and texture properties of CCB are analogous to the corresponding boehmite. The dosages of sucrose and urea determined the contents of C and N in CCB, which controlled the loading capacities of 0.64–1.50%, particle sizes of 3.75–5.48 nm and dispersity of 18.6–33.8% of the Pd NP. The C, N atoms and -OH groups on the surface of CCB are beneficial to anchor and stabilize Pd NP in situ reduction. Compared with the hydrogenation efficiency of Pd/boehmite (8.68 g/L), the corresponding value of Pd/CCB (11.18 g/L) increased by 28.8%. Furthermore, compared with the traditional preparation methods of catalyst in the field of anthraquinone hydrogenation, this effective and mild vapor-phase hydrothermal method does not use any excess reductant and capping reagent, and thus provides an alternative approach for preparing high-performance catalyst.

Abstract:The development of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions is particularly important for the industrial production of fine-chemical intermediates and biologicals. Downsizing the active component (usually metals) in heterogeneous catalysts to the nanocluster scale and even atomic dispersion is highly desirable for maximizing their efficiency and regulating their selectivity by optimizing their electronic properties. Herein, we report a nitrogen-tethering strategy for the synthesis of sub-2 nm Ir nanoclusters supported on mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbons with high Ir loading up to 10 wt %. The as-prepared Ir nanocluster catalysts exhibit outstanding activity, selectivity, and reusability in diverse vital hydrogenation reactions, including the hydrogenation of nitroarenes, quinoline compounds, and acetophenone for the synthesis of the corresponding amines, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines, and aromatic alcohols, respectively. The superior performance of the catalyst is associated with the efficient exposure of the active Ir surface and the optimal electronic properties of Ir nanoclusters based on the strong metal–support interaction.

Amorphous Strategy to Nickel Oxide Nanosheets for Highly Active and Selective Hydrogenation Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) as low-cost hydrogenation catalysts exhibit high selectivity and durability. However, due to the lack of metal activation sites required for H 2 dissociation, the harsh conditions such as high pressure (1–5 MPa H 2 ) and high temperature (100–250°C) are usually needed to achieve H 2 activation. Herein, we developed an amorphous nickel oxide nanosheets with an exceptionally low coordination number of the Ni-Ni shell, and this unique feature not only facilitated H 2 activation but also preserved remarkable selectivity (∼99%) in the hydrogenation of vinyl group under mild conditions (room temperature (25°C) and low H 2 pressure (100 kPa)).

Abstract:Ni/C was successfully synthesized via hydrazine hydrate reduction at room temperature (RT). Pt/C, Ru/C and PtRu/C were prepared via an impregnation method. PtNi/C, RuNi/C and PtRuNi/C were synthesized via a chemical replacement method. The characterization results revealed that PtRuNi nanoparticles (NPs) were highly and uniformly dispersed on carbon black in PtRuNi/C. PtRuNi/C showed a novel nanostructure in which PtRu islands (PtRu nanoclusters or PtRu binary atoms) covered Ni/Ni(OH)2 NPs. PtRuNi/C trimetallic nanomaterial exhibited an optimum catalytic performance (turnover frequency (TOF) = 211.4 h−1 and selectivity for the production of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQ) > 99%) in the selective hydrogenation of quinoline at 60 °C under 5.0 MPa H2. The catalytic properties of PtRuNi/C were significantly improved as compared to bimetallic (PtNi/C, RuNi/C and PtRu/C) and monometallic (Ni/C, Pt/C and Ru/C) nanomaterials due to its unique nanostructure, with an observed nano-synergy effect among Pt-, Ru- and Ni-related species.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts exhibit high selectivity in hydrogenation due to their isolated active sites, which ensure uniform adsorption configurations of substrate molecules. Compared with the achievement in catalytic selectivity, there is still a long way to go in exploiting the catalytic activity of single-atom catalysts. Herein, we developed highly active and selective catalysts in selective hydrogenation by embedding Pt single atoms in the surface of Ni nanocrystals (denoted as Pt1/Ni nanocrystals). During the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, the TOF numbers based on surface Pt atoms of Pt1/Ni nanocrystals reached ∼1800 h-1 under 3 atm of H2 at 40 °C, much higher than that of Pt single atoms supported on active carbon, TiO2, SiO2, and ZSM-5. Mechanistic studies reveal that the remarkable activity of Pt1/Ni nanocrystals derived from sufficient hydrogen supply because of spontaneous dissociation of H2 on both Pt and Ni atoms as well as facile diffusion of H atoms on Pt1/Ni nanocrystals. Moreover, the ensemble composed of the Pt single atom and nearby Ni atoms in Pt1/Ni nanocrystals leads to the adsorption configuration of 3-nitrostyrene favorable for the activation of nitro groups, accounting for the high selectivity for 3-vinylaniline.

Highly Dispersed Ni Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Hollow Mesoporous Silica Spheres As an Efficient Catalyst for Quinoline Hydrogenation

Abstract:With the aim of studying the effect of support structure and preparation method on the hydrogenation performance of Ni-based catalysts. Hollow mesoporous silica spheres (hw-mSiO(2)) containing tiny Ni nanoparticles highly dispersed on the inner surface (Ni@hw-mSiO(2)) were synthesized by using carbon sphere as template with four continuous procedures, containing Ni deposition, silica shell coating, calcination and reduction. As demonstrated by SEM and TEM, the hollow structure was successfully obtained after calcination and the active Ni species was highly dispersed inside the porous silica shell, which is much smaller than the Ni-based catalysts prepared by a conventional impregnation method using hw-mSiO(2) (Ni/hw-mSiO(2)) or commercial SiO2 (Ni/mSiO(2)) as supports. TPR and H-2-chemisorption results revealed the existence of strong metal-interaction and more hydrogenation sites in Ni@hw-mSiO(2). Therefore, Ni@hw-mSiO(2) catalyst achieved an excellent catalytic activity and stability in the selective hydrogenation of quinoline into 1-4-tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQ), due to the more dispersed Ni species, strong metal-support interaction and confinement effect of porous silica shell.
