Abstract:We give machine characterizations of most parameterized complexity classes, in particular, of W[P], of the classes of the W-hierarchy, and of the A-hierarchy. For example, we characterize W[P] as the class of all parameterized problems decidable by a nondeterministic fixed-parameter tractable algorithm whose number of nondeterministic steps is bounded in terms of the parameter. The machine characterizations suggest the introduction of a hierarchy Wfunc between the W- and the A-hierarchy. We study the basic properties of this hierarchy.

Abstract:AbstractWe observe that the W*-hierarchy, a variant (introduced by Downey, Fellows, and Taylor [7]) of the better known W-hierarchy, coincides with the W-hierarchy, though not level wise, but just as a whole hierarchy. More precisely, we prove that W[t] ⊆ W* [t] ⊆ W[2t − 2] for each t ≥ 2. It was known before that W[1] = W*[1] and W[2] = W*[2].Our second main result is a new logical characterization of the W*-hierarchy in terms of “Fagin-definable problems.” As a by-product, we also obtain an improvement of our earlier characterization of the hierarchy in terms of model-checking problems. Furthermore, we obtain new complete problems for the classes W[3] and W*[3].

Abstract:We give machine characterisations and logical descriptions of a number of parameterized complexity classes. The focus of our attention is the class W[P], which we characterise as the class of all parameterized problems decidable by a nondeterministic fixed-parameter tractable algorithm, whose use of nondeterminism is bounded in terms of the parameter. We give similar characterisations for AW[P], the "alternating version of W[P]", and various other parameterized complexity classes. We also give logical characterisations of the classes W[P] and AW[P] in terms of fragments of least fixed-point logic, thereby putting these two classes into a uniform framework that we have developed in earlier work. Furthermore, we investigate the relation between alternation and space in parameterized complexity theory. We prove that the compact Turing machine computation problem, shown to be hard for the class AW[SAT] in (K. A. Abrahamson et al., 1995) is complete for the class uniform-XNL.

Abstract:The complexity of the parameterized halting problem for nondeterministic Turing machines p-Halt is known to be related to the question of whether there are logics capturing various complexity classes [10]. Among others, if p-Halt is in para-AC(0), the parameterized version of the circuit complexity class AC(0), then AC(0), or equivalently, (+, x)-invariant FO, has a logic. Although it is widely believed that p-Halt (sic) para-AC(0), we show that the problem is hard to settle by establishing a connection to the question in classical complexity of whether NE not subset of LINH. Here, LINH denotes the linear time hierarchy. On the other hand, we suggest an approach toward proving NE not subset of LINH using bounded arithmetic. More specifically, we demonstrate that if the much celebrated MRDP (for Matiyasevich-Robinson-Davis-Putnam) theorem can be proved in a certain fragment of arithmetic, then NE not subset of LINH. Interestingly, central to this result is a para-AC(0) lower bound for the parameterized model-checking problem for FO on arithmetical structures.

Abstract:Giant micelles are elongated, polymer-like objects created by the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules (such as detergents) in solution. Giant micelles are typically flexible, and can become highly entangled even at modest concentrations. The resulting viscoelastic solutions show fascinating flow behaviour (rheology) which we address theoretically in this article at two levels. First, we summarise advances in understanding linear viscoelastic spectra and steady-state nonlinear flows, based on microscopic constitutive models that combine the physics of polymer entanglement with the reversible kinetics of self-assembly. Such models were first introduced two decades ago, and since then have been shown to explain robustly several distinctive features of the rheology in the strongly entangled regime, including extreme shear-thinning. We then turn to more complex rheological phenomena, particularly involving spatial heterogeneity, spontaneous oscillation, instability, and chaos. Recent understanding of these complex flows is based largely on grossly simplified models which capture in outline just a few pertinent microscopic features, such as coupling between stresses and other order parameters such as concentration. The role of `structural memory' (the dependence of structural parameters such as the micellar length distribution on the flow history) in explaining these highly nonlinear phenomena is addressed. Structural memory also plays an intriguing role in the little-understood shear-thickening regime, which occurs in a concentration regime close to but below the onset of strong entanglement, and which is marked by a shear-induced transformation from an inviscid to a gelatinous state.

Measuring the complexity of characterizing $[0, 1]$, $S^1$, and $\mathbb{R}$ up to homeomorphism

Abstract:In analogy to the study of Scott rank/complexity of countable structures, we initiate the study of the Wadge degrees of the set of homeomorphic copies of topological spaces. One can view our results as saying that the classical characterizations of $[0,1]$ (e.g., as the unique continuum with exactly two non-cut points, and other similar characterizations), appropriated expressed, are the simplest possible characterizations of $[0,1]$. Formally, we show that the set of homeomorphic copies of $[0,1]$ is $\mathbf{\Pi}^0_4$-Wadge-complete. We also show that the set of homeomorphic copies of $S^1$ is $\mathbf{\Pi}^0_4$-Wadge-complete. On the other hand, we show that the set of homeomorphic copies of $\mathbb{R}$ is $\mathbf{\Pi}^1_1$-Wadge-complete. It is the local compactness that cannot be expressed in a Borel way; the set of homeomorphic copies of $\mathbb{R}$ is $\mathbf{\Pi}^0_4$-Wadge-complete within the locally compact spaces.

Abstract:We consider how changes in transfinite machine architecture can sometimes alter substantially their capabilities. We approach the subject by answering three open problems touching on: firstly differing halting time considerations for machines with multiple as opposed to single heads, secondly space requirements, and lastly limit rules. We: 1) use admissibility theory, $\Sigma_{2}$-codes and $\Pi_{3}$-reflection properties in the constructible hierarchy to classify the halting times of ITTMs with multiple independent heads; the same for Ordinal Turing Machines which have $\tmop{On}$ length tapes; 2) determine which admissible lengths of tapes for transfinite time machines with long tapes allow the machine to address each of their cells - a question raised by B. Rin; 3) characterise exactly the strength and behaviour of transfinitely acting Blum-Shub-Smale machines using a $\tmop{Liminf}$ rule on their registers - thereby establishing there is a universal such machine. This is in contradistinction to the machine using a `continuity' rule which fails to be universal.

Abstract:This paper investigates an online hierarchical scheduling problem on two uniform machines to minimize the total completion time of all jobs. Machine M1 with a speed v1 has a lower hierarchy and machine M2 with a speed v2 has a higher hierarchy. Each job has a unit processing time and a hierarchy. The job with a lower hierarchy can only be processed on the machine M1 and the job with a higher hierarchy can be processed on any of the two machines. We consider two variants of the problem: v1=1≤v2=s and v1=s≥v2=1. For both variants, we provide parameter lower bounds and online algorithms with competitive ratio of 9−412 and 33−32 respectively, which are optimal in sense of constant bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two types of universal characters corresponding to partition shapes π = (3) and π = (2, 1) and construct their vertex operators realizations. It is proved that (3)-type and (2, 1)-type universal characters can be derived by the products of vertex operators acting on the identity. Furthermore, we investigate (3)-type and (2, 1)-type universal characters by means of Hamiltonian and fermions expectation values. In addition, based upon bilinear equations, we present the (3)-type and (2, 1)-type universal characters hierarchies whose τ functions can be derived from (3)-type and (2, 1)-type universal characters.

Switching Classes: Characterization and Computation

Abstract:In a graph, the switching operation reverses adjacencies between a subset of vertices and the others. For a hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$, we are concerned with the maximum subclass and the minimum superclass of $\mathcal{G}$ that are closed under switching. We characterize the maximum subclass for many important classes $\mathcal{G}$, and prove that it is finite when $\mathcal{G}$ is minor-closed and omits at least one graph. For several graph classes, we develop polynomial-time algorithms to recognize the minimum superclass. We also show that the recognition of the superclass is NP-complete for $H$-free graphs when $H$ is a sufficiently long path or cycle, and it cannot be solved in subexponential time assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis.

Complete and tractable machine-independent characterizations of second-order polytime

Abstract:The class of Basic Feasible Functionals BFF is the second-order counterpart of the class of first-order functions computable in polynomial time. We present several implicit characterizations of BFF based on a typed programming language of terms. These terms may perform calls to non-recursive imperative procedures. The type discipline has two layers: the terms follow a standard simply-typed discipline and the procedures follow a standard tier-based type discipline. BFF consists exactly of the second-order functionals that are computed by typable and terminating programs. The completeness of this characterization surprisingly still holds in the absence of lambda-abstraction. Moreover, the termination requirement can be specified as a completeness-preserving instance, which can be decided in time quadratic in the size of the program. As typing is decidable in polynomial time, we obtain the first tractable (i.e., decidable in polynomial time), sound, complete, and implicit characterization of BFF, thus solving a problem opened for more than 20 years.

Abstract:Starting from a discrete spectral problem, we derive a hierarchy of nonlinear discrete equations which includes the Ablowitz–Ladik hierarchy and a new hierarchy as special cases. Especially, we investigate in detail the integrability and resolvability of the new hierarchy. It is shown that the new hierarchy is integrable in Liouville’s sense and possesses multi-Hamiltonian structure. A Darboux transformation is established for a typical discrete system in the new hierarchy with the help of the gauge transformation of its Lax pair. As applications of the Darboux transformation, new exact solutions of the discrete system are explicitly given.

Abstract:We construct the quantum fields presentation of the generalized universal character and the generalized B-type universal character, and by acting the quantum fields presentations to the constant 1, the generating functions are derived. Furthermore, we introduce two integrable systems known as the generalized UC (GUC) hierarchy and the generalized B-type UC (GBUC) hierarchy satisfied by the generalized universal character and the generalized B-type universal character, respectively. Based on infinite sequences of complex numbers, we further establish the multiparameter generalized universal character and the multiparameter generalized B-type universal character, which have been proved to be solutions of the GUC hierarchy and the GBUC hierarchy, respectively.

Abstract:Using nonstandard analysis, we will extend the classical Turing machines into the internal Turing machines. The internal Turing machines have the capability to work with infinite ($*$-finite) number of bits while keeping the finite combinatoric structures of the classical Turing machines. We will show the following. The internal deterministic Turing machines can do in $*$-polynomial time what a classical deterministic Turing machine can do in an arbitrary finite amount of time. Given an element of $<M;x>\in HALT$ (more precisely, the $*$-embedding of $HALT$), there is an internal deterministic Turing machine which will take $<M;x>$ as input and halt in the $"yes"$ state. The language ${}^*Halt$ can not be decided by the internal deterministic Turing machines. The internal deterministic Turing machines can be viewed as the asymptotic behavior of finite precision approximation to real number computations. It is possible to use the internal probabilistic Turing machines to simulate finite state quantum mechanics with infinite precision. This simulation suggests that no information can be transmitted instantaneously and at the same time, the Turing machine model can simulate instantaneous collapse of the wave function. The internal deterministic Turing machines are powerful, but if $P \neq NP$, then there are internal problems which the internal deterministic Turing machines can solve but not in $*$-polynomial time.
