City Scale,Resource Allocation and Economic Growth

Abstract:The current prices of housing and other resource factors are rapidly increasing.This paper analyzes imbalanced urbanization growth mode characterized with coexistence of the polarization and decentralization.The imbalanced urbanization growth lead to high housing prices and imbalanced economic development.Based on C-D production function and panel data from 287 cities through 1999—2008,the paper investigates impacts of city scale and resource allocation on economic growth.The empirical results show that orientation of urbanization can be continued for Middle and Western Regions of China,while decentralization and concentration should be adopted for East Regions.As to city scale,future urbanization should emphasize expansion of some small and medium sized cities and limit scale of current big cities.Resource allocation should also be used to encourage development of small and medium sized cities.
