Abstract:In order to explore the effect of low temperature on the development of the small brown planthopper(SBPH),the survival, development and fecundity of SBPH were studied in the laboratory at a temperature similar to the average winter temperature in Nanjing(-6-2℃).The results indicate that 3rd and 4th instar nymphs were relatively cold resistant with median knockdown and lethal times of 1.22 and 20.49 days, respectively.Cold shock inhibited nymphs' development. There was a significant difference in the sex ratio of SBPH exposed to cold temperatures for 4 days and the control group. The rate of adult brachyptery increased significantly with duration of exposure to cold temperatures whereas the preoviposition period tended to decline and adult longevity tended to increase. However, the subsequent fecundity of 3-4th instar nymphs was not affected by duration of exposure to cold.Furthermore, the number of eggs produced by nymphs subject to two days at cold temperature slightly exceeded that of the control group. The results suggest that short-term exposure to cold temperatures do not significantly retard the population development of SBPH.
