Abstract:Different cotton varieties have different Physico-Chemical properties and play a significant role in the quality characteristics of end product. Egyptian cotton varieties have better fibre physical and chemical properties as compared to CIS varieties. Similarly compact spinning system proved itself better as compared to ring spinning system to improve the strength related properties of the yarn at low twist and high spindle speeds. Compact spinning produces a new yarn structure, as the edge fibres are incorporated into the yarn due to the elimination of the spinning triangle, so that the harmful effects of the spinning triangle on yarn characteristics are eliminated. The compact yarns possess less hairiness, better strength, better uniformity and lower values of thick & thin places and neps compared to the conventional ring-spun yarns. The present study was planned to explore the physico-chemical study of Egyptian and CIS long staple cotton and spinning potential evaluation at ring and compact spinning systems under some mechanical variables. This paper endeavors to optimize the application of best combination of Twist multiplier and Spindle speeds at ring and compact spinning system for Egyptian and CIS cotton varieties

Abstract:Textile technologies are continuously evolving with the objects both of increasing productivity and reducing processing costs, and of creating new products or variants of existing ones. Fashion, in the widest sense of the word mean fulfillment of consumer demands, through the ages constitutes a fundamental and conditional element for the whole textile industry. Fancy yarns present deliberate, decorative continuous or programmed effects of colour and/or form; they are used to create some variation in the aesthetic appearance of a fabric. The drafting process is deliberately interrupted through the effect yarn device to produce slubs in the final yarn. The present research study was aimed to evaluate the quality characteristics of slub fancy yarn by changing slub length, inter slub distance, slub thickness and twist multiplier (T.M) at ring and compact spinning systems.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Compact spinning has emerged as a contemporary spinning technology that has garnered significant attention due to its capacity to produce yarns with excellent properties. The strategy is a variation of conventional ring spinning that seeks to get rid of the spinning triangle while improving the uniformity, strength, and hairiness of the yarn. In compact spinning, fiber condensation is achieved by negative pressure airflow, which compresses the fibers and reduces their thickness. This results in a higher packing density of the fibers, leading to stronger and more uniform yarns. In this article, we provide a comprehensive overview of compact spinning technology, covering its principle, fiber condensation method, and the types of machines used. The quality of the yarn is greatly influenced by various systems and parameters such as lattice apron, air suction slot geometry, airflow fields, and twist mechanism employed in compact spinning. We present a compendium of the various developments established in studies on compact spinning, which could serve as a platform for developing new techniques in compact spinning for the production of high-quality yarns with low economic burdens. This review discusses compact spinning, two main systems, machines, influential parameters/peripherals, disadvantages, and the future prospects of compact spinning. Additionally, we provide a summary of previous research on compact spinning, highlighting its benefits and advantages over traditional ring spinning. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of guiding devices and lattice apron type on yarn quality. We also explore the potential of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in enhancing the performance and design of compact spinning machines.

Abstract:Worldwide yarn diversity in terms of structure and properties has increased in recent years. Especially composite yarns produced by multiple components have become very preferable in both weaving and knitting sectors. Among these yarns, core and dual core-spun yarn are more prominent in some areas due to their particular performance. In this study, the structure and properties of plain, elastane cored, and elastane + filament cored composite yarns, which were spun by using cotton as sheath fibers, are comparatively investigated. With a constant Ne 16/1 linear density, a carded yarn production line with modified ring-spinning system was used to produce the composite samples using 5.56% elastane ratio for both and 13.79% polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) ratio for dual core. It was observed that the strength of the composite yarns decreased, while the elongation values at the time of breaking tended to increase. There was some deterioration in transition from plain yarn to dual core composite yarn in terms of unevenness and yarn defects, while some improvement was observed in terms of yarn hairiness. In order to dwell on the causes of this situation, the surface and cross-sectional images of the yarns were also studied.

Abstract:The fibre physical properties can be influenced by non-cellulosic and metal contents present in it which ultimately may impact the quality and spinning performance of resultant yarn. The concentration of these materials largely depends upon cotton variety, growing area and atmospheric conditions. In this back drop the present research study was planned to investigate the impact of various varieties and locations on non-cellulosic and metal contents of raw cotton and their eventual effects on subsequent yarn quality. So four varieties of single-season upland cottons from four different cotton-growing locations in Pakistan were selected for the study. The collected cotton samples were subjected to chemical and physical testing to know the concentrations of non-cellulosic and metal contents present in them along with other physical parameters. Then they were subjected to yarn manufacturing by conventional ring spinning method. At the end the yarn quality testing was carried in respect of its tensile and imperfections characteristics. The results disclosed significant impacts of selected variables on yarn quality. The reduction in non-cellulosic contents and metal contents put negative impact on Count Lea Strength Product (CLSP), yarn lea strength, single yarn strength, breaking length, evenness, thin spots, and neps count of resultant yarn.

Abstract:Raw cotton performance and key technology of each process of influencing on yarn forming neps were analyzed through spinning test. The result shows——raw cotton maturity degree should be suited to reduce yarn forming neps, opening and carding process technology should be reasonable to strengthen carding and clean short fibers & impurities, waste percentage and brush speed of combing process should be increased suitably, drawing speed and passage head should be reduced, roving quantum should be reduced & twist should be increased, spinning process should be setted collector & adoptsoft elastic non-treatment top roller & plastic top pin and be reduced back zone draft multiple & increased back gauge, coning speed and tension should be reduced suitably.

Abstract:Through reasonably arrangement of HXFA299 comber,the quality of combed slivers of four different carding degrees was studied with the result showing that the carding degree of cylinder greatly effects the combed sliver quality and the contained neps(cnt/g).The carding effect of E62 comber with cylinder of different wire face angles(VARIO 9095/90°and 1295/112°) was also carried out.Yarn spinning was finally experimented by use of E62 comber of 3 different carding degrees and different wire face angles.Comparison of all the experiments indicates that the carding degree of cylinder can obviously improve the contained neps(cnt/g) of the combed sliver.

Abstract:Fabric made from fancy yarn, especially neppy yarn has a great environmental impact because the fabric does not need any additional dyeing process. This study involved knitting neppy yarn of two distinct spinning processes, vortex and ring spinning, each having three different percentages of neps. The comfort properties of six different fabrics were evaluated by analyzing various parameters, including moisture management properties, water vapor transmission rate, air permeability, hand feel properties, and bursting strength. Microscopic views were also examined for analyzing the physical appearance of the fabric’s surface. The experimental results revealed that fabrics made from vortex-spun neppy yarn (VSNY) exhibit better moisture management, breathability, and hand feel properties than ring-spun neppy yarn (RSNY). Alternatively, bursting strength and water vapor evaporation rate showed a lower trend in fabrics made from vortex-spun neppy yarn. The research findings contribute valuable insights into the potential of vortex spinning techniques for sustainable and comfortable textile production.

Abstract:Siro yarns are spun from two separate roving of same type of materials. Similarly in textile arts,folding is a process used to create a strong and balance yarn by putting together two separate yarns. Hence,this research study was carried to analyse the quality of Siro-spun and two fold yarns under the influenceof twist factor with special reference to their tensile properties. The results disclosed better tensile propertiesof yarn made from Siro spinning technique as compared to two plied yarn. This indicates the supremacyof Siro-spun yarn over two fold yarn. These findings enhance the fact that Siro spinning technique producesbetter quality yarn as compared to conventional ring spinning technique.

Abstract:To study the effect of the cone angle of the hollow spindle in the nozzle of Murata vortex spinning (MVS) on yarn properties, the k‐ε turbulence model is employed to simulate the airflow patterns inside the different nozzles with different spindle cone angles. A set of corresponding spinning experiments is designed to verify numerical predictions. The simulation results show that some factors, such as the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) over the spindle, high supersonic zone in the inlet of the swirling chamber, and the distribution of wall shear stress (WSS) along the outer wall of the spindle caused by variation of the cone angle of the spindle, are significantly related to fluid flow, and consequently to MVS yarn properties. A rational cone angle (Case 2) can form an axisymmetric CVP and high WSS, which can ensure sufficient twisting of the yarn and produce high quality yarn. The experimental results, which yarn properties spun using 100% cotton, 100% polyester, and polyester 70∕cotton 30 blends with different nozzles, are well consistent with the numerical study.

Abstract:A novel, cost-effective method for producing neppy yarn using the vortex spinning process was presented in this research. The vortex and ring spinning processes were utilized to produce 26/1 Ne neppy yarn from viscose rayon as a host fiber and polyester as a neppy fiber in three different ratios (98/2, 97/3, and 96/4). It was explored that neppy yarn produced by the vortex spinning system is aesthetically more appealing as it has very low hairiness, fewer coefficient of variation (CV%), and minimal thick and thin places compared to ring-spun neppy yarn. However, the count strength product (CSP) of the vortex-spun neppy yarn is comparatively lower than that of the ring-spun neppy yarn. The close engagement of the neppy fibers to the mother yarn in a vortex spinning system increased the neppy yarn's aesthetic beauty and strengthened its endurance was a significant discovery of this study. The hairiness value of neppy yarns was measured numerically and evaluated statistically with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and found significant differences between the two-spinning system. The adoption of the vortex spinning technique presents novel approaches for manufacturing neppy yarn, with potential advantages for the textile industry such as enhanced yarn quality, greater productivity, fewer machinery requirements, and ultimate cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:Cotton fibres contain naturally occurring non-cellulosic materials such as sugars, wax, metals and other organic species that may influence fibre characteristics, i.e. physical and chemical properties, yarn processing efficiency as well as product quality. Chemical and physical tests were conducted on raw cottons from different growing areas of Pakistan to determine the effect of different chemical components/materials on fibre properties, spinning performance and yam properties. The present research study was planned to explore the location's effect upon the non-cellulosic content of raw cotton and its ultimate effect on end product. In this concern four different growing areas (Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Faisalabad), four cotton varieties CIM-473, CIM496, NIAB-111 and NIAB-999 with four micronaire values (4.4,4.6, 4.8 and5.0) were analyzed for wax, alcohol extractable, residual sugars, fibre ash contents and light metal content. Determined values were significantly correlated to spinning consistency.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. A novel method for producing cotton/polyester staple core-spun yarns was introduced in this study to fully exploit the advantages of composite staple yarns. A coaxial roller with different diameters was installed on the ring spinning machine to assist in the production of the staple core-spun yarn. In addition, given the challenge of accurately measuring the twist of the staple core-spun yarn using a traditional twist tester, image technology was employed to measure the twists in the core and sheath layers. Models were established to correlate the process twist (the twist set on the spinning machine) with twists in the core and sheath layers of the staple core-spun yarn. The effects of the core proportion and process twist on the yarn properties were studied and statistically examined using analysis of variance. The results indicated that the twists in the core and sheath layers were linear functions of the process twist. The core exposure ratio of the staple core-spun yarn increased with an increase in the core proportion and first decreased and then increased with an increase in the process twist. The tensile properties, yarn evenness, and hairiness of the staple core-spun yarn improved with an increasing core proportion. The analysis of variance results confirmed that the core proportion and process twist significantly influenced the tensile properties, yarn evenness, and hairiness of the staple core-spun yarn. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in the properties of the staple core-spun yarn and ring-spun yarn at the 95% confidence interval.

Abstract:Textile industries are now focusing on sustainable issues in manufacturing operations to save the environment. The study focuses on the use of cotton fibers (recycled) sourced from fabric (knitted) waste (pre-consumer) to manufacture elastic yarn (dual-core) for denim fabric. The study involves the production of yarns (dual-core) using a redesigned ring spinning method with different elastomeric components, including T400® (Polyethylene terephthalate)/Polytrimethylene terephthalate), Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), Polyester (PES), Lycra® (elastane), virgin cotton and cotton (recycled) fiber. The study investigates various yarn (Ne 18/1) characteristics such as strength, IPI (imperfection index), elongation %, unevenness %, and hairiness. It is noticed that the elongation and strength of recycled yarn (double core) are lower and IPI (Imperfection index), unevenness %, and hairiness values are higher than 100 % cotton (virgin) yarn (double core). One-way ANOVA (statistical analysis) is employed to assess the significance of differences among yarns manufactured from various core materials and found significant variation for all characteristics. Additionally, the article introduces the MOORA (multi-objective optimization based on ratio analysis) technique as a decision-making tool to determine the best yarn among three alternatives (PES yarn, PBT yarn, and T400 yarn) based on their properties, considering attributes and finding T400 filament containing yarn as the best option. The study introduces a sustainable approach using recycled cotton in yarn (double core) production and employs decision-making tools to assess and rank the performance of different yarn alternatives.

Abstract:Effect of comber cylinder carding degree on carding quality and finish yarn quality were discussed.Spinning tests were carried out to four cylinder with different carding degree,two cylinders with different card clothing wrapping angle and three cylinders with same card clothing wrapping angle but different types.The result shows that cylinder carding degree effect carding quality of combed sliver,especially neps and short fibre content obviously.Aim of increasing carding quality,improving comb and finish yarn quality could be reached by selecting high-performance cylinder and setting cylinder carding degree rationally.

Abstract:The usage of recycled fibers has achieved enormous importance in the textile sector due to growing environmental awareness, legal requirements for more sustainability and the cost of raw materials. Recycled cotton fibers derived from mechanical shredding of textile waste possess lower quality values and therefore they are spun through blending with other fibers in rotor spinning system for the production of coarse yarns (10-20 Ne) to make denim, towel and home furnishing. Owing to low fiber migration, rotor yarns require high twist during spinning which makes them stiffer and poorly moisture absorbent. Rotor yarns also feel harsh in skin contact due to the presence of wrapper fibers in the yarn surface. Intending to make knit top garments like T-shirts and polo shirts, apparel manufacturers nowadays demand recycled fiber-contained soft and high moisture absorbent yarn that can be produced in ring spinning system. In the current endeavor, cotton fibers reclaimed from pre- and post-consumer textile waste were blended with virgin cotton and soft-twisted 30 Ne yarns were manufactured in ring spinning frame on an industrial scale in a spinning mill. A thorough analysis of the structure and properties of the yarns revealed that up to 25% recycled cotton fibers can be used as an alternative to virgin cotton to manufacture medium count (30 Ne) yarn in ring spinning suitable to produce knit top garments.
Tuning drafting zone parameters for polyester yarn within a ring spinning system: modeling and optimization

Abstract:Yarn is a fundamental element in most textile products. Among various yarn manufacturing methods, the ring spinning system is particularly important due to its benefits, such as high yarn quality, evenness, low hairiness, and ease of handling. The parameters of the drafting zone in this system greatly impact yarn quality. Typically, adjusting these parameters in the drafting zone is time-consuming and costly using trial-and-error method. This study introduces an algorithmic approach using response surface methodology (RSM), experimental modeling, and multi-objective optimization to decrease unevenness percentage (U%) and imperfection index (IPI). Input parameters optimized include cots hardness of front and back top rollers, spacer size, and break draft. Results showed that the artificial neural network (ANN) predicts response parameters superiorly with determination coefficient close to 1, compared to RSM, which has a determination coefficient of about 0.72. Therefore, ANN was chosen for optimization. Additionally, combining the genetic algorithm (GA) with two ANN-based models reduced IPI from 39 to 33.67 and a decreased from 9.73% to 9.67% occurred in terms of U%. The final Input settings were the cots hardness of the front roller of 70 shores and the cots hardness of the back roller of 76 shores, spacer size 2.8 mm, and break draft of 1.26. This method efficiently optimizes the drafting zone parameter, thus enhancing yarn quality.

Abstract:Journal of Industrial Textiles, Volume 54, Issue , January-December 2024. Centrifugal spinning is an increasingly popular and viable method to produce fibers of different compositions. However, there are still aspects to investigate and improve in the centrifugal spinning process, such as optimizing the fiber yield and obtaining defect-free fiber morphology. To address this gap, the effects of the collectors on the fiber yield and their morphology were investigated in this work. An aqueous solution with 18 wt% of PVP and two needles (18G and 21G) with different diameters and three different spinning speeds (5000, 7000, and 9000 RPM) were used to explore a set of fiber collectors with various collector spacing (1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 cm distance between the collectors' bars). The results of the experiments showed that fiber collectors affect the yield of the process and the fiber morphology to some (non-negligible) extent. Denser collectors enabled higher yield, thus reducing the waste, and positively affecting the beading of fibers. The knowledge obtained in this work about the influence of collectors on the centrifugal processing of basic polymers can be with an advantage applied to the processing of different polymers and needles used within the centrifugal spinning process.
