Abstract:Objective To study the effects of epidermal growth factor on periodontal regeneration of autotransplanted rhesus teeth. Methods Fifteen teeth of two rhesus in periods of growth were included. The selected teeth were extracted under general anaesthesia, and then put into 5 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml EGF, Hank′s and NS for half an hour. The teeth of the opposite site of same position were also extracted. The experimental teeth were autotransplanted into the opposite site of same position. Rhesus were killed three months after operation. Specimens were observed under Opticals. Results The periodontal fiber of 5 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml EGF groups were thick and well arranged, and the fibroblasts were in great number. The periodontal fiber of Hank′s group were strong but not well arranged. The periodontal fiber of NS group had edema, the fibroblasts were rarely seen. The gingival grooves of 5 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml EGF group and Hank′s groups became deeper, the gingival groove epithelium and junctional epithelium of these three groups displayed hyperplasia. All groups showed cementum resorption. 5 ng/ml EGF Group had regeneration of cementum and Sharpey′s fiber was formed. All groups had alveolar bone resorption. Cementoblast and new bone were seen in 5 ng/ml EGF, Hank′s group and NS groups. Conclusion EGF (5 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml) could promote proliferation of fiberoblast of autotransplanted rhesus teeth but lead to gingival hyperplasia. The ability of promoting proliferation of periodontal fiber of EGF was stronger than Hank′s, and Hank′s ability in this respect was stronger than NS.
