Abstract:Syntheses of fine-chemicals using heterogeneous catalysts have tremendous industrial potentials, yet CH functionalization studies have been largely focused on homogeneous catalysis. We report here the first meta-selective CH bond arylation of anilides inside copper-exchanged zeolites. Mid- or large-pore zeolite frameworks are selected as supports to access large organic molecules, and atomically distributed copper catalysts exhibit high activities (84–90% conversions) toward direct arylation of anilides with diphenyliodonium salt on 0.5mol% copper concentration. Computational studies indicate the well-fitted copper-aryl complexes inside zeolite frameworks. Electron micrographs, elemental analyses, and reusability study show no observable leaching of catalytically active copper species during the reactions tested. These results demonstrate the practical synthetic potential of copper-exchanged zeolites as promising supported molecular catalysts to afford biaryl motifs-containing compounds with high catalytic activity, chemical stability, and recyclability.

Abstract:The selectivity for monomethylamine plus dimethylamine is urged to be improved in selective synthesis of methylamines due to their high value as the chemical intermediates. ZK-5, a small-pore zeolite, shows high selectivity for monomethylamine plus dimethylamine, while conventional synthetic methods of ZK-5 involve the long crystallization time and/or expensive organic structure-directing agents/explosive nitrates. Herein, ZK-5 is rapidly synthesized with Na+ and K+ and the exclusive silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-34 seed. The indispensable role of as-synthesized SAPO-34 seed is disclosed. The as-synthesized SAPO-34 seed is dissolved in the initial mixture, forming Si(3Al) species and P-containing species. The key role of Si(3Al) species is revealed by the control experiments. The obtained H-ZK-5 zeolite exhibits superior selectivity for monomethylamine plus dimethylamine (94.4%) compared to the traditional H-ZK-5(K, Cs) zeolite and other small-pore zeolites (SAPO-34, DNL-6, H-rho, and H-PST-29), showing great potential for industrial synthesis of monomethylamine and dimethylamine.

Abstract:A novel method to prepare asymmetric amine ethers is reported. Tertiary amine alcohol hydrogen sulfate intermediates are prepared through a reactive distillation process, followed by the transesterification process to afford eventually asymmetric amine ethers. Experiments and DFT calculations revealed the essential roles the sulfate group plays in the highly selective monoesterification process. This clean method is tolerant towards various functional groups with good yields under mild condition, which is obviously superior compared to the conventional processes.
A Ru@Zeolite Catalyst for Highly Selective Synthesis of Primary Amines from Alcohol Amination

Abstract:The direct amination of aliphatic alcohols with ammonia is an environment-friendly route for the synthesis of primary amines. In this work, LTA zeolite-encapsulated Ru nanoparticles(Ru@LTA) were successfully synthesized and employed for the direct amination of 1-octanol with NH3 into octylamine at low NH3/ alcohol ratios(2.12.4). A 76％ selectivity to octylamine was obtained over a 5Ru@KA zeolite catalyst. The positive effect of Ru@LTA zeolite catalysts on primary amine selectivity stems from the steric hindrance.

Abstract:A synthesis of N -ethyl- n -butylamine with simple separation method in a fixed-bed reactor using CuO–NiO–PtO/γ-Al 2 O 3 as the catalyst was proposed and investigated. The present catalytic system gave high activity and good selectivity, and the reaction conditions such as temperature and liquid hourly space velocity were optimized. Since no water was generated, the protocol proved to be easy to separate, and N -ethyl- n -butylamine was collected at 110 °C by distillation. The yield and the purity were 60.7 and 99.5 %, respectively.

Abstract:A novel method for the one pot synthesis of N-alkyl arylamines from nitro aromatic compounds and alcohols is proposed through the combination of the aqueous-phase reforming of alcohol for hydrogen production, the reduction of nitro aromatic compounds for the synthesis of aromatic amine and the N-alkylation of aromatic amine for the production of N-alkyl arylamine over an identical catalyst under the same conditions of temperature and pressure in a single reactor. In this process, hydrogen generated from the aqueous-phase reforming of alcohols was used in-situ for the hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds for aromatic amine synthesis, followed by N-alkylation of aromatic amine with alcohols to form the corresponding N-alkyl arylamines at a low partial pressure of hydrogen. For the system composed of nitrobenzene and ethanol, under the conditions of 413 K and P N2 = 1 MPa, the conversion degrees of nitrobenzene and aniline were 100%, the selectivity to N-ethylaniline and N, N-diethylaniline were 85.9% and 0%–4%, respectivity, after reaction for 8 h at the volumetric ratio of nitrobenzene:ethanol:water = 10:60:0. The selectivity for N, N-diethylaniline production is much lower than that through the traditional method. In this process, hydrogen and aromatic amines generated from the aqueous-phase reforming of alcohols and hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds, respectively, could be promptly removed from the surface of the catalyst due to the occurrence of in-situ hydrogenation and N-alkylation reactions. Thus, this may be a potential approach to increase the selectivity to N-alkyl arylamine.

Abstract:The selective amination of ethylene oxide to ethanolamine has become a hot spot in amination reactions in recent years. The preparation of ethanolamine is mainly composed of aqueous ammonia and liquid ammonia methods, which belong to typical homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis respectively. This article intends to review the progress in aqueous ammonia method from thermodynamics, kinetics and reaction mechanism. The engineering condition of aqueous ammonia method in industry is also partly discussed. The latest knowledge of catalyst species, surface acid-base property and pore structure in the catalyst is summarized in terms of liquid ammonia method. A prospection on the future research of selective amination is also discussed.

Abstract:A new zeolite catalyst, Al-RUB-41, was synthesized for the first time. It was tested as a catalyst in methanol amination, and showed a shape-selective performance that results in a highly favorable product distribution. The shape-selective nature was also evidenced by using Pt-Al-RUB-41 as a bifunctional catalyst for decane hydroconversion. With its unique pore architecture and remarkable shape-selective character, Al-RUB-41 presents a significant commercial potential in industrial catalysis.

Abstract:Catalytic attempts as well as thermodynamic considerations were employed to explore possible measures for enhancing the yield of 1-propanol in propene hydration. The cost of 1-propanol production may be largely reduced if it can be produced from the direct hydration of propene. The thermodynamic considerations suggest that equilibrium distribution of 1- and 2-propanol depends almost solely on reaction temperature; the selectivity of 1-propanol increases linearly with the temperature. Catalytic tests over zeolites HNU-3 and HZSM-5 prove that the reaction behavior is related to the pore structure and surface acidity of zeolites, which could be adjusted through modification with SiCl4 or NH4F. Modification of zeolites may suppress the formation of byproduct oligomers, but has only limited improvement on 1-propanol yield. Strong acidity of zeolites is favorable for the hydration to approach the reaction equilibrium, and therefore enhances the selectivity of 1-propanol.

Abstract:Alkali-treated zeolite material was prepared by using 0.1-0.4 mol/L NaOH aqueous solution, as characterized by XRD, SEM, N-2 adsorption-desorption technique and ammonia-temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). The as-prepared zeolite was found to be an effective catalyst for alcoholysis of urea and disubstituted urea to produce alkyl carbamate, getting 91.8-100% conversion of urea and substituted urea with >98.0% selectivity to alkyl carbamates. The results indicated that the high reactivity of the zeolites for alcoholysis of urea and N-substituted urea could be mainly ascribed to the enhanced specific area and balance between acidic and basic sites on the HZSM-5 surface caused by the alkali treatment. This catalyst can be easily recovered and reused. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Benzylation of Arenes with Benzyl Chloride over H-Beta Zeolite: Effects from Acidity and Shape-Selectivity

Abstract:H-Beta zeolites with various Si/Al ratios have been prepared for the liquid-phase benzylation of various arenes with benzyl chloride (BzCI). Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy revealed the incorporation of Al into the silica framework to form catalytically active Bronsted acid sites (BAS). H-1 MAS NMR spectroscopy investigations demonstrated the BAS density increased with reducing Si/Al ratio, while the BAS strength decreased as probed by CD3CN molecules. These H-Beta zeolites are highly selective to desired monobenzylation products depending on the shape-selectivity induced by the suitable channel system. The catalytic performance is in line with the nudeophilicity and proton affinity (PA) of arenes (xylene > toluene > benzene) on the same catalyst, typically for Friedel-Crafts reaction. A shape-selective effect has been observed to dominate the reaction, lowering the performance of mesitylene compared to xylene, as well as being selective to only the monobenzylation product. The benzylation performance is enhanced with increasing the BAS strength of H-Beta zeolites due to the formation of more aryl cation intermediates by attacking electronegative chlorine atom in BzCl. An alternative reaction mechanism based on the activation of arenes by protonating aromatic ring of BAS is proposed to explain the superior benzylation activity of BzCI with less active arenes.

Abstract:Methylenedianilines (MDA) are widely used as intermediates in the production of polyurethanes and polyisocyanurates. The current routes for the production of MDA offer only limited control of the isomer ratio (4,4’/(2,4’+2,2’)), with 4,4’-MDA being the most valuable isomer. While 2,4’-MDA is also marketed, significant added value could be unlocked upon further steering the production towards 4,4’-MDA. We here show that zeolites such as Beta can selectively isomerize 2,4’-MDA towards the desired 4,4’-MDA via a bimolecular mechanism, in an aniline background. While several acid zeolites were found to be active isomerization catalysts, MCM-68 (MSE topology) in particular combines high isomerization activity with efficient shape-selective suppression of the formation of unwanted 2,2’-MDA and oligomers. The origin of this shape-selectivity was studied, highlighting the crucial role of the acid site location in the pore confinement of MSE zeolites.

Abstract:The activity and isomers selectivity of the synthesis of methylenedianiline (MDA) from aminal on the various zeolites with different topology structure have been investigated. The poor activity in H-ZSM-5 and H-mordenite contributed to the narrow porous and scarcity of pore intersections or supercages in the MOR structure, respectively. H-beta zeolite shown high activity for the rearrangement reaction can take place in the pore intersections of zeolite BEA. For the dealuminated USY catalysts, the highest activity and selectivity to 4,4′-MDA is attributed to the rearrangement of aminal in the supercages and mesoporous, which the mass transport limitation can be overcome.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of nitriles is an efficient and environmentally friendly route to synthesize symmetrical secondary amines, but it usually produces a mixture of amines, imines, and hydrogenolysis by-products. Herein we report a magnetic quaternary-component Pt-CuFe/Fe3 O4 nanocatalyst system for the selective synthesis of symmetrical secondary amines with ammonia borane as hydrogen donor. The catalyst with a low Pt loading (0.456 wt%) is the source of the activity, and the d-band electron transfer from Cu to Fe enhances the selectivity. This synergistic effect results in the transformation of benzonitrile to dibenzylamine with excellent conversion (up to 99 %) and nearly quantitative selectivity (up to 96 %) under mild reaction conditions, nevertheless, the reaction TOF is as high as up to 1409.9 h-1 . A variety of nitriles are suitable for the synthesis of symmetrical secondary amines. More importantly, unwanted hydrogenolysis byproducts, especially toluene, is not detected at all. In addition, the catalyst is magnetically recoverable, and it can be reused up to five times.

Abstract:Catalytic reductive amination of aldehydes is a valuable strategy to synthesize nitrogen-containing compounds but often suffers from low selectivity and complex reaction mechanisms. This study aims to develop a selective control method for the syntheses of primary amines and secondary imines, which are widely used in fine and bulk chemicals, materials, and pharmaceuticals. Metal-encapsulated zeolite is a special type of catalyst that combines the advantages of metal nanoparticles and zeolites, such as high activity and selectivity. Herein, metal-encapsulated zeolites (Pd-M@S-1, M=Ni, Mn, Co) were applied as catalysts for the reductive amination of aromatic aldehydes. Results showed that the reductive amination of aldehydes over Pd-M@S-1 catalysts can be selectively switched between primary amines over Pd0.6@S-1 and secondary imines over Pd0.6Ni@S-1 by tuning the acid-base properties of the catalysts. The effect of acid-base properties of catalysts on selectivity control was claimed by conducting control experiments, time-dependent curves, and detailed characterizations.
