Abstract:Abstract The shape-selective catalysis enabled by zeolite micropore’s molecular-sized sieving is an efficient way to reduce the cost of chemical separation in the chemical industry. Although well studied since its discovery, HZSM-5′s shape-selective capability has never been fully exploited due to the co-existence of its different-sized straight channels and sinusoidal channels, which makes the shape-selective p -xylene production from toluene alkylation with the least m -xylene and o -xylene continue to be one of the few industrial challenges in the chemical industry. Rather than modifications which promote zeolite shape-selectivity at the cost of stability and reactivity loss, here inverse Al zoned HZSM-5 with sinusoidal channels predominantly opened to their external surfaces is constructed to maximize the shape-selectivity of HZSM-5 sinusoidal channels and reach > 99 % p -xylene selectivity, while keeping a very high activity and good stability ( > 220 h) in toluene methylation reactions. The strategy shows good prospects for shape-selective control of molecules with tiny differences in size.

Abstract:One common strategy in the search for new zeolites is the use of organic structure-directing agents (OSDA). Typically, one seeks to achieve a high specificity in the structure-directing effect of the OSDA. This study shows, however, that an OSDA lacking strong specificity towards any particular zeolite may provide opportunities for discovery when other synthesis parameters are systematically screened. Thus, 1-methyl-2-ethyl-3-n-propylimidazolium has allowed to crystallize the new large/medium pore zeolite HPM-16 as well as the recently reported extra-large pore -SYT and the medium/small pore and chiral STW. The sophisticated OSDA originally affording -SYT and the new simple OSDA have very little in common, both in terms of size, shape and flexibility, while both may still direct the synthesis of the same zeolite. In fact, molecular simulations show that the new OSDA is located in three different positions of the -SYT structure, including the discrete 8MR where the original organic could not fit.
- Interactions Between Aromatic Groups in Amphiphilic Molecules: Directing Hierarchical Growth of Porous Zeolites

Abstract:The development of hierarchical macro- or mesoporous zeolites is essential in zeolite synthesis because the size of the micropores limits mass transport and their use as industrial catalysts for bulkymolecules. Although major breakthroughs have been achieved, fabricating crystallographically ordered mesoporous zeolites using a templating strategy is still an unsolved challenge. This minireview highlights our recent efforts on the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules to obtain ordered hierarchical MFI zeolites by introducing aromatic groups into the hydrophobic tail of the amphiphilic molecules. Owing to the geometric matching between the self-assembled aromatic tails and the MFI framework, a) single-crystalline mesostructured zeolite nanosheets (SCZNs), b) SCZNs with a 90 degrees rotational intergrowth structure, c) a hierarchical MFI zeolite with a two-dimensional square P4mm mesostructure, and d) a single-crystalline mesoporous ZSM-5 with three-dimensional pores and sheetlike mesopores layered along the a-axis were successfully synthesized.

Abstract:In the context of advancing social modernization, the projected shortfall in the demand for renewable aromatic hydrocarbons is expected to widen, influenced by industries like high-end materials, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. Sustainable methods for aromatic production from alternative sources, particularly the methanol-to-aromatics (MTA) process using zeolite ZSM-5 and associated with the "methanol economy", have garnered widespread attention. To facilitate this transition, our project consolidates conventional strategies that impact aromatics selectivity—such as using hierarchical zeolites, metallic promoters, or altering zeolite physicochemical properties—into a unified study. Our findings demonstrate the beneficial impact of elongated crystal size and heightened zeolite hierarchy on preferential aromatics selectivity, albeit through distinct mechanisms involving the consumption of shorter olefins. While metallic promoters enhance MTA performance, crystal size, and hierarchy remain pivotal in achieving the maximized aromatics selectivity. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of achieving superior aromatics selectivity through physicochemical modifications in zeolite ZSM-5 during MTA catalysis, thereby advancing the field's comprehension of structure–reactivity relationships.

Abstract:The production of hydrocarbons for the synthesis of readily available energy and multifunctional materials is of great importance in modern society. Zeolites have proven to be a boon for the targeted regulation of specific hydrocarbon as shape-selective catalyst in converting carbon resources. Yet our mechanistic understanding and quantitative description of shape-selectivity of zeolite catalysis remains rather limited, which restricts the upgrade of zeolite catalysts. Herein, we proposed quantitative principle of shape-selectivity for zeolite catalysis using methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) as model. Combining with molecular simulations and infrared imaging, we unveil the competition of thermodynamic stability, preferential diffusion and favored secondary reactions between different hydrocarbons within zeolite framework are the essence of zeolite shape-selective catalysis. Notably, we provide methodology to in silico search for the optimal combination of framework topology and acidity properties of zeolites with operating conditions that potentially outperform commercial MTH catalysts to achieve high selectivity of desired hydrocarbon products.
Direct Preparation of *MRE Zeolites with Ultralarge Mesoporosity: Strategy and Working Mechanism

Abstract:Introduction of mesopore is critical for applications where mass-transport limitations within microporous networks, especially for zeolite with one-dimensional microporous network, hinder their performance. Generally, the creation of mesopore in zeolite through a direct synthesis route is strongly dependent on complex and expensive organic molecules, which limits their commercial application. Here, we successfully developed a facile synthesis route for preparing ZSM-48 zeolite (*MRE topology) with ultralarge mesoporosity in which typical 1,6-hexylenediamine worked as an organic structure-directing agent, innovatively assisted by a simple crystal growth modifier (tetraethylammonium bromide, TEABr). The working mechanism of TEABr during crystallization was revealed and proposed on the basis of TEM, thermal gravimetric mass spectrum, and 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR characterization results. In the process, TEA+ ions preferentially interacted with the solid during the induction period, which effectively suppressed the aggregation of ZSM-48 primary nanorods. As a result, ultralarge mesoporosity of 0.97 cm3·g–1 was constructed through the stacking of the nanorods. Interestingly, TEA+ ions only took part in the crystallization process and did not occlude in the pores of the final zeolites indicating its potential in recyclability. Moreover, similar synthesis strategy could be applied for the preparation of hierarchical ferrierite zeolites, implying the universality of this strategy. Abstract:The preparation of zeolites has long been viewed as an empirical practice in which the impact of numerous synthesis parameters on complex pathways of crystallization remains unresolved. Efforts to achieve predictive control in zeolite crystal engineering are often motivated by the benefits of producing materials with nanosized dimensions for improved mass transport properties. In the past decade there has been substantial progress in the synthesis of zeolites and zeotypes with nanosized and hierarchical structures that have been shown to outperform conventional analogues in various applications. The ability to synthesize state-of-the-art nanoporous materials has socioeconomic advantages in processes that are critical to addressing twenty-first-century problems. Here we summarize synthetic methods used to prepare different classes of zeolitic materials and we highlight the diversity of nucleation and growth mechanisms, approaches to control these pathways through experimental design, and the advantages of infusing computational and big data analyses to transition zeolite synthesis away from trial-and-error methodologies.

Abstract:Selectivity control in zeolite synthesis Zeolites are widely used in many industrial applications, but despite decades of research, their synthesis still relies on trial-and-error approaches. Complex nucleation mechanisms and topological diversity lead to strong phase competition, complicating the issue of rational design of zeolite synthesis. Using atomistic simulations, literature mining, human-computer interaction, synthesis, and characterization, Schwalbe-Koda et al . developed a computational strategy that enables a priori control of phase selectivity in zeolite synthesis (see the Perspective by Chaikittisilp and Okubo). This approach uses several metrics for designing organic structure–directing agents to crystallize target zeolites with controlled phase competition and intergrowth. These results may have profound implications for the materials science community if this method is shown to be successful in the synthesis of practically useful uncommon zeolites. —YS

Abstract:Etching growth is widely employed for growing metal species, carving out some of the finest nanocrystals. However, such a general concept has so far evaded the growth of porous crystals. Herein, a novel nucleophilic etching growth mechanism that can be exploited to tune zeolite materials is uncovered. Most critical is the identification of mild etchant used in situ to successfully synthesize high-quality hierarchically porous ZSM-5 crystals. Time-series sample characterizations allow to visualize and track the complex zeolite crystallization pathway involving initial nucleation, intermediate dissolution, and subsequent nanoparticle attachment regrowth. Competition and cooperation between framework growth and in situ dissolution lead to facile control over size, morphology, crystallinity, composition, and mesoporosity by varying the amount of etchant or nucleophilicity. The judicious use of this mechanism results in dramatically improved catalytic activity in methanol to hydrocarbon reactions owing to the simultaneously increased crystallinity, secondary mesopores, and proper acid properties.

Abstract:Stable aluminosilicate zeolites with extra-large pores that are open through rings of more than 12 tetrahedra could be used to process molecules larger than those currently manageable in zeolite materials. However, until very recently1-3, they proved elusive. In analogy to the interlayer expansion of layered zeolite precursors4,5, we report a strategy that yields thermally and hydrothermally stable silicates by expansion of a one-dimensional silicate chain with an intercalated silylating agent that separates and connects the chains. As a result, zeolites with extra-large pores delimited by 20, 16 and 16 Si tetrahedra along the three crystallographic directions are obtained. The as-made interchain-expanded zeolite contains dangling Si-CH3 groups that, by calcination, connect to each other, resulting in a true, fully connected (except possible defects) three-dimensional zeolite framework with a very low density. Additionally, it features triple four-ring units not seen before in any type of zeolite. The silicate expansion-condensation approach we report may be amenable to further extra-large-pore zeolite formation. Ti can be introduced in this zeolite, leading to a catalyst that is active in liquid-phase alkene oxidations involving bulky molecules, which shows promise in the industrially relevant clean production of propylene oxide using cumene hydroperoxide as an oxidant.
Shape selectivity of zeolite for hydroisomerization of long-chain alkanes

Abstract:Shape-selective catalysis is an essential topic for fundamental research and industrial application of n -alkane hydroisomerization. Zeolites with a 1D channel are extensively studied, while there are few quantitative reports on the ideal channel size and the accurate size effect on product isomer molecule structures. In this work, a series of 1D zeolites ZSM-22 (4.6 × 5.7 Å), ZSM-12 (5.6 × 6.0 Å) and MOR (6.5 × 7.0 Å) with a variable pore size are prepared, characterized and tested for n -dodecane hydroisomerization. Their shape selectivity effect on the detailed product distribution and the reaction pathway are fully discussed combining the results of molecule size calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The reaction activity is determined by exposed Brønsted acid sites to reaction molecules, and is highly correlated with the zeolitic channel size. And the matching degree between the reaction molecules and the channel size is discovered to be the key for product distribution. A 0.3 Å pore size difference in zeolite channels is discovered to be critical for isomer selectivity, corresponding to a 0.3 Å size difference between a mono-branched isomer and di-branched ones with branches located on different carbon atoms. As a result, the ZSM-12 based catalyst exhibits a maximum selectivity to multi-branched isomers of 55% at a high conversion of 90%, while the ZSM-22 catalyst gives a multi-branched isomer selectivity barely reaching 17%. Furthermore, the large pore of MOR offers less steric constraints on isomer products but causes serious cracking. Thus, an optimal channel dimension range is discovered between 5.6 × 6.0 Å and 6.5 × 7.0 Å for the maximum multi-branched isomers at high conversion, which highlights a direction for the development of efficient isomerization catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Zeolites, a class of silica-based porous materials, have been widely employed in the of chemical industry such as sorption, separation, catalysis, and ion-exchange. Normally, the synthesis of zeolites is performed in the presence of organic templates from trial-and-error route, which is labor-intensive and empirical. In recent years, theoretical simulation from the interaction between zeolite structure and organic template has been used to guide the synthesis of zeolites, which is time-saving. In this review, the recent progresses for the targeted synthesis of zeolites from interaction between zeolite structure and organic template are briefly outlined including design of new templates for zeolite synthesis, preparation of zeolites with new composition, development of novel routes for zeolite synthesis, synthesis of intergrowth zeolites, generation of novel zeolite structures, control of zeolite morphology, and modulation of aluminum distribution in the zeolites. These targeted syntheses reveal that the minimum energy principle from the theoretical simulation is a key for guiding zeolite crystallization. This review would be important for zeolite researchers to rationally synthesize zeolites and effectively design new zeolite structures.

Abstract:The adsorption and diffusion behaviors of C8 isomers and C9 component as main products of the isobu-tane alkylation catalyzed by zeolites with different topologies were investigated using configurational bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) and MD simulations in this work. The adsorption capacity of zeolites at 353 K and 2.0 MPa relies on their pore volume with the order of FAU > BEA > LTL > MOR. The diffusion coefficient of C8 and C9 molecules increases with the decrease of loading and the increase of temperature, and the more compact molecules diffuse slower than the slimmer ones at low loadings while quicker at higher loadings. It was found that for zeolites, small adsorption heat of C8 isomers, or large molecular diffusion coefficient would correspond to a high selectivity of target alkylates. Particularly, BEA zeolite with large RPLD/LCD shows high reaction selectivity, rendering it a good candidate catalyst for C4 alkylation. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Tailoring Hierarchical Zeolites with Designed Cationic Surfactants and Their High Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Three hierarchical porous zeolites (H-*BEA, H-MTW, and H-*MRE) were successfully synthesized with the assistance of designed cationic surfactants under hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The as-synthesized zeolite samples can be easily regulated by changing the number of long hydrophobic n-alkyl chains. Also, we investigated the relationship between the length of the surfactant and the formation of the microporous structure of the zeolite. Furthermore, the alkylation of benzene with propene was performed as a probe reaction to evaluate the catalytic performance of the synthesized hierarchical zeolites. The resulting materials were characterized by using a complementary combination of techniques, that is, X-ray powder diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, 28 Si and 27 Al MAS NMR spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and computer simulation. These analysis results indicated that quaternary ammonium surfactants acted as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in the formation of these hierarchical zeolite samples, whether the surfactant had long hydrophobic tail groups or not. The simulation results indicated that the organic molecules with no long hydrophobic chain could lead to the synthesis of zeolite through charge control, and the hydrophobic molecules with long hydrophobic chains could form zeolites through orbital control. These hierarchical zeolites showed improved catalytic activity towards the industrially relevant alkylation of benzene with propene compared with conventional zeolites with the same frameworks. More importantly, the success of using quaternary ammonium surfactants with no hydrophobic n-alkyl tail group in the synthesis of hierarchically structured mesoporous zeolites provides a new pathway for the synthesis of hierarchical porous materials by a soft-templating method.
Design of a Small Organic Template for the Synthesis of Self-Pillared Pentasil Zeolite Nanosheets

Abstract:Zeolite nanosheets with excellent mass transfer are attractive, but their successful syntheses are normally resulted from a huge number of experiments. Here, we show the design of a small organic template for the synthesis of self-pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolite nanosheets from theoretical calculations in interaction energies between organic templates and pentasil zeolite skeletons. As expected, the SPP zeolite nanosheets with the thickness at 10–20 nm have been synthesized successfully. Characterizations show that the SPP zeolite nanosheets with about 90% MFI and 10% MEL structures have good crystallinity, the house-of-card morphology, large surface area, and fully four-coordinated aluminum species. More importantly, methanol-to-propylene tests show that the SPP zeolite nanosheets exhibit much higher propylene selectivity and longer reaction lifetime than conventional ZSM-5 zeolite. Abstract:Aluminosilicate zeolites with hierarchically porous systems have attracted special scientific interest due to their advantages in bulky molecule catalysis. Organic amphiphilic molecules or surfactants are frequently employed in the hydrothermal syntheses of porous zeolites for the construction of enhanced pore systems (mesopores or macropores) beyond sole micropores. This review describes a design concept of novel amphiphilic molecules for a one-step preparation of hierarchically porous zeolites containing mesopores with certain orders. Via a structural-directing mechanism study of the most common surfactant (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB) in the synthesis of bulk zeolite MFI (zeolite framework code given by the International Zeolite Association), aromatic groups were grafted into the hydrophobic tail of the amphiphilic molecule. Due to the pi-pi stacking of the aromatic groups and a geometrical match between their arrangement and the zeolitic framework, single-crystalline zeolite nanosheets (SCZNs) were successfully synthesized. Furthermore, following the same idea for the design, bolaform and triply branched amphiphilic molecules with aromatic groups were also prepared and used for the formation of SCZNs with a 90 degrees rotational boundary and single-crystalline mesoporous ZSM-5 with three-dimensional pores, respectively. This design concept will provide a new insight into the molecular factors for governing the simultaneous fabrication of ordered meso-and micro-phases.
Theoretical Prediction from Classical Equations and Rational Synthesis of Ultrafine LTL Zeolite Nanocrystals

Abstract:Much more attention has been paid to zeolite nanocrystals due to their use as catalysts and zeolite membranes as well as composites and hierarchical structures. Recently, zeolite nanocrystals of several structures have been successfully obtained, but rational synthesis of these zeolite nanocrystals is still challenging. Here, we report a theoretical prediction to synthesize zeolite nanocrystals from classical equations. According to the new equation, we finally obtained ultrafine zeolite L nanocrystals in accordance with the theoretical prediction. The smallest zeolite L we synthesized exhibits the crystals with a [100] length of 18 +/- 5 nm and a [001] width of 8 +/- 2 nm. After loading Pt species (0.5 wt %), this zeolite L supported Pt catalyst is very active and selective for the formation of isomers and cracking products in the region of 260-280 and 320-340 degrees C in n-dodecane hydroisomerization, showing adjustable catalytic properties by temperature control over one catalyst in the same bed reactor. The new equation in this work might offer a good opportunity for rational synthesis of expanded zeolite nanocrystals in the near future.

Abstract:As a size and shape selective catalyst, zeolites are widely used in petroleum and fine chemicals processing. However, their small micropores severely hinder molecular diffusion and are sensitive to coke formation. Hierarchically porous zeolite single crystals with fully interconnected, ordered and tunable multimodal porosity at macro-, meso- and micro-length scale like in leaves offer the ideal solution. However, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Here we report a versatile confined zeolite crystallization process to achieve these superior properties. Such bio-inspired zeolite single crystals lead to significantly improved mass transport properties by shortening the diffusion length while maintaining shape selective properties, endowing them with an unprecedentedly high efficiency of zeolite crystals, enhanced catalytic activities and cycle time, highly reduced coke formation and reduced deactivation rate in bulky-molecule reactions and methanol-to-olefins process. Their industrial utilization can lead to the design of innovative and intensified reactors and processes with highly enhanced efficiency and minimum energy consumption.
