Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:Under the background of marine strategy and clean energy strategy, China has carried out large-scale construction around marine ranching and offshore wind farms and made great achievements. However, the problems such as high project cost, the fragmentation of marine habitats and maritime conflict are becoming increasingly prominent, which have led to the test and exploration of integrated development of offshore wind farms and marine ranching at home and abroad. Based on the analysis of relevant research and test work at home and abroad, suggestions are put forward for the current situation of integrated development of offshore wind and animal husbandry, as well as the difficulties and challenges in economic and policy feasibility, site selection and planning, fish species selection, supporting equipment development, ecological impact assessment (noise, electromagnetic field, base interference, heavy metal migration, etc.), etc.

Abstract:Many alien aquatic plants are deliberately introduced because they have economic, ornamental, or environmental values; however, they may also negatively affect aquatic ecosystems, by blocking rivers, restricting aquatic animals and plants by decreasing dissolved oxygen, and reducing native biodiversity. These positive and/or negative ecological effects may be enhanced under global change. Here, we examine the impacts of global change on aquatic alien plant introduction and/or invasions by reviewing their introduction pathways, distributions, and ecological effects. We focus on how climate change, aquatic environmental pollution, and China's rapid economic growth in recent decades affect their uses and invasiveness in China. Among 55 species of alien aquatic plants in China, 10 species are invasive, such as Eichhornia crassipes, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Pistia stratiotes. Most of these invaders were intentionally introduced and dispersed across the country but are now widely distributed and invasive. Under climate warming, many species have expanded their distributions to areas where it was originally too cold for their survival. Thus, these species are (and will be) considered to be beneficial plants in aquaculture and for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems (for water purification) across larger areas. However, for potential invasive species, climate warming is (and will be) increasing their invasion risk in more areas. In addition, nitrogen deposition and phosphorus inputs may also alter the status of some alien species. Furthermore, climate warming has shifted the interactions between alien aquatic plants and herbivores, thus impacting their future spreads. Under climate change, more precipitation in North China and more frequent flooding in South China will increase the uncertainties of ecological effects of alien aquatic plants in these regions. We also predict that, under the continuing booming economy in China, more and more alien aquatic plants will be used for aquatic landscaping and water purification. In conclusion, our study indicates that both human activities under rapid economic growth and climate change can either increase the potential uses of alien aquatic plants or make the aquatic invaders worse in China and other areas in the world. These findings are critical for future risk assessment of aquatic plant introduction and aquatic ecosystem restoration.

Abstract:Background & Aims: Alien plant invasion has significantly threatened native biodiversity, ecological security, socio-economic development, and human health.Consequently, exploring the mechanisms of alien plant invasion and its ecological impacts are of great importance to the ecologically sustainable development of our country.Both questions are also key topics in the field of invasion ecology.Over the past decade, ecologists have conducted much research and achieved fruitful outcomes, providing theoretical guidance for the prevention and management of invasive alien plants and biodiversity conservation.Progresses: Based on domestic and international studies in this field over the past decade, the present article reviews the progress of plant invasion ecology, focusing on the following three aspects of the field.First, we present the roles of species characteristics, biotic and abiotic environments on alien plant invasion.Second, we review the impacts of alien plant invasion on native ecosystems.Third, we briefly introduce the term 'native plant invasion' as an analog to alien plant invasion, as well as applications of multi-omics technology in the area.Prospects: The review looks ahead to further developments in invasion ecology, including that (1) multiple species experiments rather than single species experiments are more suited to obtaining gerneralizable findings; (2) the geographical scale is increasing, such as from local scale to latitudinal gradient pattern; (3) more studies are integrating multiple invasion theories, rather than one hypothesis, into a unified framework.

Abstract:The issue of biological invasions in aquatic ecosystems is becoming increasingly severe in the contemporary world. Due to the lack of monitoring and management systems for aquatic invasive species, the difficulty in identifying aquatic invasive species, and the limited effectiveness of conventional control methods in aquatic environments, biological control in water bodies is comparatively more challenging than other types of interventions. In recent years, environmental DNA (eDNA) survey methods have rapidly developed in various fields, such as biological monitoring, community ecology, paleoenvironmental research, conservation biology, and invasion ecology, due to their unique advantages of being rapid, sensitive, efficient, and non-invasive. Because of these characteristics, this innovative molecular approach has gained wider acceptance and is being increasingly utilized for the detection of biological diversity in aquatic environments. Furthermore, it has emerged as a novel technology to address the pressing and significant issue of aquatic invasive species in the vast freshwater and marine resources of the East Asian region. This paper summarizes a variety of literature sources to summarize the major aquatic invasive species in East Asian countries and the current application status of eDNA technology in their survey processes. Using China as a case study, it expounds on the prospective incorporation of the 4E strategy with eDNA technology for the surveillance of biological invasions. Furthermore, it explores the potential prospects of eDNA technology in species diversity management and policy formulation, offering theoretical guidance for establishing aquatic invasive species monitoring systems. From a technological standpoint, the integration of eDNA technology with the 4E strategy holds significant potential for application, thereby offering a promising reference for the formulation of policies related to the management of aquatic biological invasions and biodiversity.

Abstract:Biological invasion has become one of the hot spots of ecologic environment problems in the world. The study on the ecologic risk evaluation of invasive alien plants is aim to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the probability of the alient plants invasion and the damage that it could bring to the ecosystem, and to reach the goal of ecological risk management so as to improve the eco-environment and economic coordinated development. Basded on the present situation of invasive alien plants ecological risk evaluation in China, this thesis mainly comprehensively analyzed the sources of invasive alien plants ecological risk and the damage which may cause, explored the assessment method and comprehensive evaluation model on the invasive alien plants ecological risk, established the indexes system and judging standard of alien plants invasive risk, and classified the alien plants risk levels in our country. In the end of thesis, some suggestions on the ecological risk management of invasive alien plants were put forward.

Abstract:Invasion of habitats by non-native species is one of the major factors that threaten global biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.China is becoming one of the most severely invaded countries in the world with increasing frequency of deliberate species introduction,international tourism and worldwide trade of agricultural products.A comprehensive understanding of invasion process and involved mechanism is very necessary to avoid the outbreak of invasive species and prevent new invasion.Solidago canadensis L,the worldwide invader with a invasion history over 70 years in China,has been extensively studied in the last decades.However,few studies concerned the persistent and profound impacts on local environment induced by invasion,and their feedbacks on subsequent invasion and plant community dynamics.Here,we reviewed the successful invasion mechanisms of S.canadensis from its biological characteristics,invasibility of the introduced range,allelopathic effect and plant-soil feedbacks based on novel interests and recent advancements,analyzed and evaluated the inherent relations between four aspects above.It suggested that invasion was a complicated biological process that involved multitrophic interactions of herbivores,carnivores,plants and decomposers,and a result of interactions between multiple mechanisms,among which the most far reaching reason was disturbance by human activities.The strong vegetative propagules produced by rhizome of S.canadensis strengthened its population established in invaded habitat,and the numerous fertile offspring expanded new habitat through wind dispersal.The high phenotype plasticity to resource fluctuation and high tolerance to stress conditions offered extra advantages over local competitors.These extrinsic performance could partially be explained by intrinsic features as S.canadensis was a polyploid complex and characterized by high genetic diversity.Moreover,the strong allelopathic effects on native plants and soil borne pathogens significantly inhibited potential antagonists,which undoubtedly further extended its dominance.Susceptibility of the introduced range resulted from appropriate climate,low biotic resistance and strong human disturbance provided favorable conditions for invasion.Besides,facilitated by mycorrhizal mutualism also played an important role in the invasion of S.canadensis.Community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was changed in a way that favored S.canadensis more than native host plants.The mechanism of host preference remained unclear and represented an intriguing field that awaited to be intensively studied.Up to now,however,enemy release from goldenrod specific gallmaker and other pathogens in China did not show any positive impacts on its growth and reproduction.Although parasitized by Cuscuta japonica exhibited an obvious biological control potential,its ecological risks need to be further examined and evaluated before extensive application.Prospects for the study of S.canadensis in the future were proposed with emphases on(1) isolation,structure determination and in situ acting mechanism illumination of allelochemicals;(2) establishment and improvement of database,population dynamic and spreading tendency prediction using mathematical models;(3) long term monitoring on post invasion environmental changes,study on functions of S.canadensis in ecosystem and co-evolution with local organisms and(4) proper utilization,effective control and eradication method of S.canadensis.

Abstract:A greater understanding and effective management of biological invasions is a priority for biodiversity conservation globally. Many freshwater ecosystems are experiencing the colonisation and spread of multiple co-occurrent alien species. Here the implications of both the relative abundance and richness of alien invaders on aquatic macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional richness, ecosystem quality and functional redundancy are assessed using long-term data from rivers in England. Based on the most common aquatic invaders, results indicated that their richness rather than abundance was the most important factor negatively affecting aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. However, the response of functional redundancy was negatively affected by invader abundance at the river basin scale. The response of communities varied as the number of invading taxa increased, with the most marked reductions following the colonisation of the first few invaders. Results indicate that different facets of multiple biological invasions influence distinct aspects of aquatic biodiversity. Preventing the establishment of new invaders and limiting invader taxa richness within a community should therefore be a conservation priority. These findings will assist river scientists in understanding mechanisms driving changes in biodiversity and facilitate the testing of ecological theories while also ensuring environmental managers and regulators can prioritize conservation / management opportunities.

Abstract:The establishment, reproduction, dispersal, and distribution of alien plants are affected by various factors during the transition from being newly introduced in a habitat to being invasive. In the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China, comprising farmlands and natural grasslands, the biological characteristics of alien plant species were the key intrinsic factors (propagation characteristics and competitive ability), followed by such extrinsic factors as human interference and environmental heterogeneity. Among biological characteristics, the life form may be an important and useful indicator of the invasive ability of a species, and the risk of invasion is greater from alien species that are poisonous, inedible, and have traits that facilitate wide dispersal. Farmlands may serve as initial shelters for alien species, from which they spread into neighbouring habitats, whereas natural grassland may act as a barrier to plant invasions. Management practices detrimental to grasslands, including overgrazing, reclamation, and road construction, often facilitate the invasions; therefore, counter measures such as reseeding and a ban on grazing need special attention. Environmental factors including precipitation, nutrients, prevailing winds, fires, and topography may be other factors that promote or block the process of invasion. In studying ways of preventing or controlling such invasions, alien plants with short life cycle, prolific seed production, and strong competitiveness, deserve particular attention and so do human activities that may damage the environment and fragile habitats.

Abstract:China is rich in aquatic resources and the aquatic processing industry is developing rapidly, and the market potential of products produced using various aquatic raw materials is huge. The socio-economic development and the improvement of people's consumption level have put forward higher requirements for aquatic products, which further promote the technological innovation of related processing. The article classifies aquatic products into six categories: fish, shellfish, algae, crustaceans, echinoderms and cephalopods, and introduces the technological innovations and applications in freezing and preservation, sterilization, and by-product utilization in recent years, respectively, to provide reference for the continued development of aquatic products processing industry in the future.

Abstract:The impact of invasive alien species (IAS) on nature and society is increasing globally. It is crucial to utilize information systems for evidence-based management, enabling the assessment and supporting survey and control actions. However, the lack of accessible and comprehensive baseline IAS data often impedes the ability to prioritize and allocate resources efficiently. Despite the increased public awareness of biological invasions in China over the past decades, the critical importance of data requirements has not been fully recognized, leading to gaps in available data. Here, we outline the key data demands for the management of biological invasions and highlight the current lack of high-quality data for invasion management in China, and critically assess data gaps in IAS distribution, inventory, and impact. Additionally, we propose a conceptual framework to illustrate the data requirements throughout the invasion management process, along with indicators to assess data quality within three dimensions: relevance, resolution, and reliability.

Abstract:Biological invasions, one of the three most pressing environmental problems, are unintended consequences of globalisation, which facilitates the transglobal movement of species across all geographical and physical boundaries with the vastly increasing movement of people and commercial goods. In addition to economic impacts, they have profound influence on native biodiversity, communities, ecosystems and even regional ecological security. This review focuses on some important issues of ecology of biological invasions: definition of biological invasion, global change and biological invasions, tens rule, range spread, evolutionary consequences of invasive alien species. Also, we briefly discussed the priority research areas in the future. China will no doubt benefit from entering WTO, but she will also face a more serious problem of biological invasions caused by exchange of living organisms. Therefore, it is hoped that our ecologists pay more attention to the phenomenon of biological invasions so as to avoid severe negative consequences for our environment, economy and society.

Abstract:As the largest coastal city in China, Shanghai's rapid development in transportation, tourism, trade, and commerce has facilitated the spread and invasion of non-native aquatic organisms. Aquatic organisms are highly elusive, and once established, eradicating them becomes a challenging task. Currently, our understanding of the invasion risk posed by non-native aquatic species in Shanghai is limited. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the pathways of introduction, distribution, and dispersion and the invasion risk and impacts of non-native aquatic organisms in Shanghai. This study investigated aquatic organisms in Shanghai's primary water bodies, including Huangpu River, Suzhou River, and Dianshan Lake. The risk assessment was conducted using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), and field monitoring was performed with environmental DNA (eDNA) technology. Results of the risk assessment indicate that among the 21 evaluated species, 9 fall into the medium-to-high-risk category with scores ≥26, while 12 are classified as low-risk with scores <26. The top four species with the highest invasion risk are Gambusia affinis, Pomacea canaliculata, Lepomis macrochirus, and Coptodon zillii. This study identified 54 fish species belonging to seven orders, 16 families, and 42 genera at 16 sampling sites in Shanghai, among which Channa maculata, Micropterus salmoides, and Misgurnus bipartitus are non-native. The results suggest that Shanghai faces a high invasion risk of aquatic species, necessitating enhanced scientific prevention and control measures. Early monitoring is essential for species with medium-to-high invasion risk, and a further evaluation and analysis of the risks associated with introduced fish species already present in Shanghai are recommended for aquaculture practices.

Abstract:Allelopathy of aquatic macrophytes is of significance on sustainable management of weeds in freshwater ecosystem and eutrophic lakes' ecological reconstruction.Phylogeny and actuality of allelopathy on aquatic macrophytes were reviewed.The relative method of experiment,bioassay and allelochemicals' isolation had been discussed.Current bioassay methods include agar diffusion,algal and Lemna minor growth inhibition assays.Allelopathic substances can be isolated and identified from the culture solution which is prepared through coexistence or solitude cultivation.It plays an important role in confirming the presence of allelopathy in complicated aquatic environment and studying the release routes of allelochemicals and mechanisms of allelopathic activity.

Abstract:The rapid industrialization process has brought about explosive growth in the types of chemicals and the widespread and extensive usage of chemicals. These chemicals enter into the aquatic environment with their application in industry and daily life, posing a security threat to natural water bodies and public health. It is necessary and urgent to carry out risk assessment of these new pollutants or micro-pollutants in water. Therefore, this paper reviewed the research progress and development direction of health risk assessment and ecological risk assessment of emerging contaminants in aquatic environment, and prospected the research and application in China. This paper proposes that it is necessary to deeply study the public health effects, environmental effects and migration and transformation characteristics of these emerging contaminants in water, and to understand their toxicological effects, so as to establish a sound risk assessment benchmark and method as soon as possible to help water resources management and water security.

Abstract:The large-scale distribution patterns of alien invasive plants (AIP) can provide key information and a theoretical basis for management strategies, including the prevention of invasions, the control and eradication of established AIPs, and the identification of areas at high risk of invasion. This study aims to quantify distribution patterns of AIP in China, to develop approaches that measure the social, economic, and ecological impacts, and to identify areas that are at higher risk of plant invasion. Based on published literature, there were 384 AIPs in China, representing 233 genera from 66 families. Climatic factors were among the primary factors determining AIPs overall distribution patterns. The majority of AIPs were tropically distributed in China, meaning that they were mainly restricted to southern China. Temperate-distributed AIPs, those distributed only or predominantly in northern China, were fewer but had higher average rates of spread than tropically distributed AIPs. Average ecological and economic impact per AIP was negatively correlated with AIP richness, meaning that areas with relatively few AIPs nevertheless have some of the most detrimental ones. Our comparative evaluation showed that the risk of invasion differed among regions of China, with high-risk areas in southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong) and central coastal areas of eastern China (Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu). In the context of climate change, areas around latitudes of 33 degrees N, including Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu, should be given more attention for the control and prevention of plant invasions. Predictions of high-risk areas for future invasions differed depending on the scale of aggregation and the evaluation index, indicating that invasive risk assessments should be based on multiple factors.

Abstract:Biological invasion pose a severe threat to global biodiversity, and studies of bioinvasion patterns and the underlying mechanisms provide critical tests to ecological theories. China is a global hotspot of biodiversity and also biological invasions. The understanding of mechanisms for bioinvasion patterns has been limited by inadequacy of data spatial resolution, and lack of a historical perspective. This study compiled the first nation-scale distribution data with a sub-provincial spatial unit (prefecture) for 463 invasive alien plants species (IAPS) recorded in China, as well as their introduction times. The spatiotemporal patterns of species richness of invasive alien plants, including three life forms (annual-biennial, perennial, and woody) were explored, then related the species richness patterns with environmental, social-economic and historical factors. Statistical analyses included quantile regression, generalized linear model (GLM), and hierarchical variation partitioning. The results indicated that: (1) herbaceous species comprised 84% of the 463 IAPS in China; (2) plant introductions into China accelerated since 1800, reaching the maximum rate during 1900–1940. IAPS richness had a closer correlation with the time of newest introduction (R2 = 0.155) than with that of the oldest introduction (R2 = 0.472); (3) IAPS richness decreases with increasing latitude (r = −0.32, P < 0.001) and decreases from the coastal and southern terrestrial borders to inland regions, but doesn’t increase with prefecture size. The three life forms of IAPS showed similar latitudinal patterns of species richness and divergent latitudinal patterns of species percentage. (4) IAPS richness showed significantly positive correlations with thermal climate and a negative relationship with climate seasonality. GLM explained up to 65% of the variation in spatial patterns of IAPS and three life forms; with much less variation explained in the species percentage patterns. The year of the most recent IAPS introduction and the low temperature limit jointly dominated spatial patterns of IAPS richness in China, whereas road density showed little effect. Therefore, global warming and economic globalization play a prominent role in promoting biological invasion in the last few decades, and will continue to drive the trend of plant invasion in China and probably elsewhere.
