Abstract:The ability to prepare organically functionalised, highly ordered silicas with control over texture and porosity is of great benefit to catalysis. A one-step method for the preparation of such materials has recently been developed, leading to Hexagonal Mesoporous Silicas (HMS), which display typical wormhole pore structure, and contain organic groups. High surface areas, and tight pore size distributions can also be obtained. Additionally, very high loadings of organic groups can be incorporated. The paper will describe the scope of the synthesis procedure, and indicate some applications of the materials obtained.
Bifunctional Hybrid Mesoporous Organoaluminosilicates with Molecularly Ordered Ethylene Groups.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of crystal-like structurally well-ordered ethylene-containing hybrid mesoporous organoaluminosilicate materials, which exhibit molecular-level periodicity in the pore walls and enhanced hydrothermal stability. Distilled 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene (BTEE) was used as the organosilica precursor, aluminum isopropoxide as aluminum source, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as template. The materials are structurally well-ordered and exhibit high surface area (>1300 m(2)/g) and pore volume (>1.10 cm(3)/g). The presence of molecularly ordered ethylene groups was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, (29)Si and (13)C MAS NMR, and Raman spectroscopy. The ethylene groups are thermally stable up to a temperature of 300 degrees C. The presence of ethylene groups enhances the hydrothermal stability in boiling water of both organosilica and organoaluminosilicate materials. The organoaluminosilicate materials possess a bifunctional character arising from the presence of both tetrahedrally coordinated Al and molecularly ordered ethylene groups in their frameworks.
Double-Templating Synthesis of Hierarchical Meso-Macroporous Silica Monolith

Abstract:Hierarchical meso-macroporous materials have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in catalysis, sorption, and separation. The incorporation of interconnected macropores in mesoporous materials is very useful because macropores can favor mass transfer and reduce transport limitations. However, it still remains a challenge to fabricate ordered mesoporous channels in the bicontinuous macroporous framework walls. This paper reports a double-templating route based on a sol-gel method to prepare hierarchical meso-macroporous silica monoliths. The obtained material shows a bicontinuous macroporous structure with highly ordered meso-channels distributing inside the macroporous skeleton walls. The bimodal pore structure was formed Under the action of the two templates. The organic polymer was added to induce a phase separation taking place at the sol-gel transition and thus form the bicontinuous macroporous structure. Meanwhile, a nonionic surfactant was introduced to template the formation of ordered mesostructure inside the macroporous skeleton walls. As characterization by scanning electron microscopy, transmittance electron microscopy, N-2,, physisorption, and X-ray diffraction, the resulting silica monolith exhibits Specific Surface area as high as 880 m(2)/g and pore volume as large as 1.2 cm(3)/g. The hexagonally ordered mesopores are highly centered at 5.8 nm. Besides, through optimizing the synthesis procedure, the monolith morphology of the resulting materials can be perfectly preserved during the wet gel drying process, and thus a crack-free hierarchical silica monolith with centimeter scale can be obtained.

Abstract:We developed a new category of porous silica and organosilicas nanostructures in a facile method based on weakly acidic aqueous-ethanol media by utilizing two different pentablock copolymer templates of type PLGA-PEO-PPO-PEO-PLGA. Pluronic block templates were used mainly to prepare these pentablock copolymers with different molecular weights and volume ratios. Silica precursor tetraethyl orthosilicate and organosilicas precursor 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene have been used as main source for synthesizing the silica and organosilicas samples. Weak Lewis acids iron(III) chloride hexahydrate, aluminum(III) chloride hexahydrate, and boric acid were utilized as catalyst instead of any strong inorganic acids and the molar ratio of catalyst/precursor has been optimized to 1–2 for preparation of ordered mesostructures. Reaction temperatures have been optimized to 25 °C for pure silica and both 25 °C as well as 40 °C for organosilicas to get the best result for mesostructures. A detailed analysis by using various analytical techniques like synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering, nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, solid-state 29Si CP-MAS nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and so on has revealed well developed mesostructures with surface area of 388–836 m2/g for silica and 210–691 m2/g for organosilica samples, respectively. Furthermore, bimodal typepores have been observed from pore size distribution plot of the samples. Thermal stability of the materials was up to 400 °C as analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract:Herein, a simple and efficient synthesis based on a dual templating approach allow the preparation of tunable macroporous mesoporous silica materials. Macropores incorporation has been obtained using polymer spheres of well-defined size and their subsequent removal by thermal treatment allowed the independent control of the macropore size entrance between 200 nm and 50 nm. The addition of the block copolymer drives the formation of a second mesostructured skeleton, with a pore size centered around 4 nm, throughout the material framework. By a fine tuning of the sol gel synthesis parameters (Polymer:TEOS ratio, aging conditions), we succeeded in guiding the SBA-15 rod-like morphology having randomly packed macropores to a derived SBA-15 with a homogeneous honeycomb macrostructure. Moreover, large mesoporous windows are generated between adjacent macropores. Hence, this simple one-pot synthesis approach, allowing scaling-up, offers fine tuning porosity at the macropore scale. Abstract:Great interests have been imparted on organically modified mesoporous silica materials due to their high surface areas, uniform pore sizes and integrated functionality. Besides the inherent character of inorganic and organic components, the interactions between them should also be recognised for the synthesis, including organic-group loading, mesostructure and particle morphology, condensation, as well as organic-group distribution. To obtain long range ordered hybrid materials, several factors, such as relative hydrolysis and condensation rates of the inorganic and organic sources, chemical character such as hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity and acid/base of organic ligand as well as the surfactant category, should be surveyed. A concept of 'combinatorial synthesis' is introduced here for the cases of combining two or more functional units in a typical synthesis into a single one. The silica precursors in the preparation of periodic mesoporous organosilanes (PMOs) are the aggregation of inorganic and organic silicates. The assembly will lead to a unique distribution and high concentration of functional groups. Both the confinement within the mesopores and the pore surface nature will affect the accessibility to the active sites, and therefore, the adsorption and relative applications. These characters win them ample host-guest chemistry. They can seek the opportunities in the fields of catalysis, separation, electronic devices, biomedicines, nanomaterial fabrication, etc.

Abstract:A series of hierarchically ordered porous silica composites were synthesized using anionic (SO4 -2) polystyrene spheres and triblock copolymers Pluronic F127 (EO107PO70EO107) and P123 (EO20PO70EO20) as templates in the presence of cosurfactants (n-alcohols) in an acidic medium. The silica materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Hg porosimetry, N2 adsorption, solid-state NMR, and TG-DTA. At least three distinct pore sizes are observed in these materials. The composites consist of three-dimensional ordered macrospheres (200−800 nm) with interconnecting uniform-sized (70−130 nm) windows. The walls of these macrospheres consist of mesostructured pores (3−8 nm). Nitrogen adsorption indicates the presence of microporosity (<2 nm). Here, we report the detailed synthesis and characterization of such hierarchically ordered porous silica composites (Sen et al. U.K. Patent, GB 0201951.1; Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2003, 42, 4649) with macro−meso−microporous structure and a three-dimensional interconnectivity. These materials could be useful as potential supports for heterogeneous catalysis for bulkier molecules where diffusion of reactant molecules could be facilitated.

Abstract:Utilization of well‐defined siloxane molecules allows for the construction of functional siloxane‐based nanoporous materials based on the molecular design. Herein, a novel class of siloxane‐based porous materials is synthesized via cross‐linking of dimethylsilyl‐ and dimethylvinylsilyl‐functionalized cage siloxanes with double‐6‐ring (D6R) geometry. Compared with double‐4‐ring cage siloxane, this study highlights the characteristics of D6R siloxanes as building blocks, demonstrating their high surface area and chemical stability. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations show their unique cation encapsulation ability.

Self-Directed Assembly Of Organosilanes Into Helically Mesoporous Nanocomposites

Abstract:Mesoporous silica nanocomposites are typically synthesized by co-assembling organosilanes and surfactants, followed by removal of surfactant molecules. Self-directed assembly of bridged silsesquioxanes which exploits non-covalent interactions generally produces mesoscopically ordered lamellar solid materials. Here we explore the unique assembly behavior of a porphyrin-bridged silsesquioxane and first reports the synthesis of mesoporous materials by directed assembly of organosilane, without using any surfactant. The resultant mesopores are uniform with a chiral structure, and the mesoporous nanocomposites also exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties and thermal stability. These unique structures and properties provide new platforms for many applications. Particularly, this research provides an efficient synthetic paradigm to a family of functional and mesoporous materials through a neat one-step process, compared to the lengthy operation in a co-assembly approach.

Abstract:Highly ordered long-range lamellar silica was prepared using pure silicone surfactant as a structure-directing agent at neutral pH. Moreover, novel hierarchically mesostructured silica (designated ZSU-5) was templated from the mixture of silicone surfactant and TX-100 (C8Ph(EO)(10), Ph = phenyl) under neutral pH conditions. The results have demonstrated that the lamellar mesophase and the wormlike mesoporosity in the walls were separately templated from silicone surfactant and TX-100 in the mixed two different surfactant systems, and thus, hierarchically mesostructured silica was formed. We suggest that chain configuration of the surfactants is responsible for the formation of silica mesophase with different structures.

Abstract:"Noodle-like" mesoporous silica with a diameter of about 180 nm and a length of ca. 10 mum was prepared through sol-gel process by using poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) complex as template. Parallel oriented regular mesopores with a diameter of around 2-4 mn are distributed along the wall of the particles, while the "worm-like" disordered mesopores can be found in the fringe part. This approach provides a new series of templates and a novel route to prepare inorganic mesoporous materials with special morphology.

Abstract:A general synthetic procedure for highly ordered and well-dispersed periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanoparticles is reported based on a single cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and simple silica sources with organic bridging groups via an ammonia-catalyzed sol-gel reaction. By changing the bridging group in the silica sources, the pore structures of the as-made particles with three-dimensional hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc), cubic (Pm3n), two-dimensional hexagonal (P6mm), and wormlike structure were evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The size range of the nanoparticles can be adjusted from 30 nm to 500 nm by variation of the ammonia concentration or the co-solvent content of the reaction medium. The PMO nanoparticles with high concentration of organic groups in the framework offered good thermal stability, good dispersion in low polarity solvent and high adsorption of small hydrophobic molecules. Finally, the dye functionalized PMO nanoparticles show low cytotoxicity and excellent cell permeability, which offers great potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract:A family of highly ordered mesoporous (20-300 Angstrom) silica structures have been synthesized by the use of commercially available nonionic alkyl poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomeric surfactants and poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers in acid media. Periodic arrangements of mescoscopically ordered pores with cubic 1m (3) over bar m, cubic Pm (3) over bar m (or others), 3-d hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc), 2-d hexagonal (p6mm), and lamellar (L-alpha) symmetries have been prepared. Under acidic conditions at room temperature, the nonionic oligomeric surfactants frequently form cubic or 3-d hexagonal mesoporous silica structures, while the nonionic triblock copolymers tend to form hexagonal (p6mm) mesoporous silica structures. A cubic mesoporous silica structure (SBA-11) with Pm (3) over bar m diffraction symmetry has been synthesized in the presence of C16H33(OCH2CH2)(10)OH (C16EO10) surfactant species, while a 3-d hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc) mesoporous silica structure (SBA-12) results when C18EO10 is used. Surfactants with short EO segments tend to form lamellar mesostructured silica at room temperature. Hexagonal mesoporous silica structures with d(100) spacings of 64-77 Angstrom can be synthesized at 100 degrees C by using oligomeric nonionic surfactants. Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica structures (SBA-15) with unusually large d(100) spacings of 104-320 A have been synthesized in the presence of triblock poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) copolymers. SBA-15 mesoporous structures have been prepared with BET surface areas of 690-1040 m(2)/g, pore sizes of 46-300 Angstrom, silica wall thicknesses of 31-64 Angstrom, and pore volumes as large as 2.5 cm(3)/g. A novel cubic (Im (3) over bar m) cage-structured mesoporous silica structure (SBA-16) with a large cell parameter (a = 176 ii) has been synthesized using triblock copolymers with large PEO segments. The EO/PO ratio of the copolymers can be used to control the formation of the silica mesophase: lowering this ratio of the triblock copolymer moieties promotes the formation of lamellar mesostructured silica, while higher ratios favor cubic mesostructured silica. Cubic mesoporous structures are also obtained when star diblock copolymers are used as structure-directing agents. The calcined ordered mesoporous silicas reported in this paper an thermally stable in boiling water for at least 48 h. The assembly of the inorganic and organic periodic composite materials appears to lake place by a hydrogen bonding (S-0 H+)(X-I+) pathway. The assembly race r increases with increasing concentration of [H+] and [Cl-], according to the kinetic expression r = k[H+](0.31)[Cl-](0.31).

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica-based materials with various mesostructures are generally synthesized from hydrocarbon surfactants. In this review, I have briefly summarized recent developments of syntheses of ordered mesoporous silica-based materials templated from fluorocarbon–hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures and semi-fluorinated surfactants. The novel templates of fluorocarbon–hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures, semi-fluorinated, and fluorinated surfactants offer a good opportunity to synthesize ordered mesoporous silica-based materials with improved stability, highly catalytic activity, tailorable pore sizes, and novel mesostructures.

The discussion is focused on the control of the internal structure (the mesostructure and the related structural parameters) and exterior morphology of the mesoporous silica templated by both cationic surfactants and poly(ethylene oxide) based block copolymers. The potential development of the research on mesoporous silica is also proposed.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally (3D) ordered macro-/mesoporous (3DOM/m) materials, which combine the advantages of high surface area of the mesopores, efficient mass transport within the macropores, and strong structural stability of the 3D interconnected porous frameworks, have shown remarkable performances in a wide range of applications. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dual-hard-templating technique as a general synthetic strategy for constructing the 3DOM/m materials by nanocasting mesoporous silica confined within the regular voids of a silica colloidal crystal (opal). Through this method, various materials, such as 3DOM/m Pt, Pd, Ni2P, carbon and N/P codoped carbon (NPC), have been successfully synthesized. The as-prepared 3DOM/m Ni2P and NPC are demonstrated to exhibit outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), respectively.
Controllable Preparation Of Ultra-Low-Dielectric Nanoporous Silica Via Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Templates

Abstract:Four organic-inorganic hybrids were respectively synthesized via hydrosilylative addition reaction between octahydridosilsesquioxane (POSS) and linear dienes with different numbers of methylene groups, and well characterized by FTIR, C-13 NMR and Si-29 NMR technologies. It is confirmed that the hybrids have well-defined three-dimensional network structures with POSS cages uniformly dispersed in the networks. The four hybrids were then used as templates to produce silica films through an optimized spin-coating and calcination process. N-2 sorption-desorption determination reveals that the silica films are nanoporous with a narrow pore distribution. Cross-section HRTEM images of the four films further confirm that the nanosize pores are evenly dispersed. SEM observation shows that the surfaces of the films are smooth and free of cracks or flaws. By altering the number of methylene groups of the dienes linking the POSS cages, pore size and porosity of the porous silica films are easily adjusted. After dehydroxylation treatment with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), the porous films show very low dielectric constants, which is closely related to the porosity of the film. This result reveals that the controllable preparation of low dielectric silica films has been achieved in this study.
