Abstract:We present a quick review of several reduction techniques for symplectic and Poisson manifolds using local and global symmetries compatible with these structures. Reduction based on the standard momentum map (symplectic or Marsden–Weinstein reduction) and on generalized distributions (the optimal momentum map and optimal reduction) is emphasized. Reduction of Poisson brackets is also discussed and it is shown how it defines induced Poisson structures on cosymplectic and coisotropic submanifolds.

The Reduced Spaces of A Symplectic Lie Group Action

Abstract:There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux et al. In this case it will be shown that the three reduced spaces mentioned above do not coincide, in general. More specifically, the Marsden-Weinstein reduced spaces are not symplectic but Poisson and their symplectic leaves are given by the optimal reduced spaces. Foliation reduction produces a symplectic reduced space whose Poisson quotient by a certain Lie group associated to the group of symmetries of the problem equals the Marsden-Weinstein reduced space. We illustrate these constructions with concrete examples, special emphasis being given to the reduction of a magnetic cotangent bundle of a Lie group in the situation when the magnetic term ensures the non-existence of the momentum map for the lifted action. The precise relation of the cylinder valued momentum map with group valued momentum maps for Abelian Lie groups is also given.

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:This paper proves a symplectic reduction by stages theorem in the context of geometric mechanics on symplectic manifolds with symmetry groups that are group extensions. We relate the work to the semidirect product reduction theory developed in the 1980's by Marsden, Ratiu, Weinstein, Guillemin and Sternberg, as well as some more recent results and we recall how semidirect product reduction finds use in examples, such as the dynamics of an underwater vehicle.We shall start with the classical cases of commuting reduction (first appearing in Marsden and Weinstein, 1974) and present a new proof and approach to semidirect product theory. We shall then give an idea of how the more general theory of group extensions proceeds (the details of which are given in Marsden, Misiolek, Perlmutter and Ratiu, 1998). The case of central extensions is illustrated in this paper with the example of the Heisenberg group. The theory, however, applies to many other interesting examples such as the Bott-Virasoro group and the KdV equation.

Abstract:For Hamiltonian field theories on polysymplectic manifolds with a symmetry group action and a momentum map, we explore the redundancy in a set of necessary conditions that has appeared in the literature, for a generalized version of the Marsden-Weinstein symmetry reduction theorem. Next, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for polycosymplectic reduction. We relate polycosymplectic reduction in a one-to-one way to the reduction of an associated larger polysymplectic manifold. Throughout the paper, we provide examples and discuss special cases.

Abstract:In this paper we study the coisotropic reduction in different types of dynamics according to the geometry of the corresponding phase space. The relevance of the coisotropic reduction is motivated by the fact that these dynamics can always be interpreted as Lagrangian or Legendrian submanifolds. Furthermore, Lagrangian or Legendrian submanifolds can be reduced by a coisotropic one.

Abstract:We show that contact reductions can be described in terms of symplectic reductions in the traditional Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer as well as the constant rank picture. The point is that we view contact structures as particular (homogeneous) symplectic structures. A group action by contactomorphisms is lifted to a Hamiltonian action on the corresponding symplectic manifold, called the symplectic cover of the contact manifold. In contrast to the majority of the literature in the subject, our approach includes general contact structures (not only co-oriented) and changes the traditional view point: contact Hamiltonians and contact moment maps for contactomorphism groups are no longer defined on the contact manifold itself, but on its symplectic cover. Actually, the developed framework for reductions is slightly more general than purely contact, and includes a precontact and presymplectic setting which is based on the observation that there is a one-to-one correspondence between isomorphism classes of precontact manifolds and certain homogeneous presymplectic manifolds.

Abstract:Reduction theory for mechanical systems with symmetry has its roots in the classical works in mechanics of Euler, Jacobi, Lagrange, Hamilton, Routh, Poincaré, and others. The modern vision of mechanics includes, besides the traditional mechanics of particles and rigid bodies, field theories such as electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, plasma physics, solid mechanics as well as quantum mechanics, and relativistic theories, including gravity. Symmetries in these theories vary from obvious translational and rotational symmetries to less obvious particle relabeling symmetries in fluids and plasmas, to subtle symmetries underlying integrable systems. Reduction theory concerns the removal of symmetries and their associated conservation laws. Variational principles, along with symplectic and Poisson geometry, provide fundamental tools for this endeavor. Reduction theory has been extremely useful in a wide variety of areas, from a deeper understanding of many physical theories, including new variational and Poisson structures, to stability theory, integrable systems, as well as geometric phases. This paper surveys progress in selected topics in reduction theory, especially those of the last few decades as well as presenting new results on non-Abelian Routh reduction. We develop the geometry of the associated Lagrange–Routh equations in some detail. The paper puts the new results in the general context of reduction theory and discusses some future directions.

Abstract:Various holonomy phenomena are shown to be instances of the reconstruction procedure for mechanical systems with symmetry. We systematically exploit this point of view for fixed systems (for example with controls on the internal, or reduced, variables) and for slowly moving systems in an adiabatic context. For the latter, we obtain the phases as the holonomy for a connection which synthesizes the Cartan connection for moving mechanical systems with the Hannay-Berry connection for integrable systems. This synthesis allows one to treat in a natural way examples like the ball in the slowly rotating hoop and also non-integrable mechanical systems.
On k-polycosymplectic Marsden-Weinstein reductions

Abstract:We review and slightly improve the known k-polysymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reduction theory by removing some technical conditions on k-polysymplectic momentum maps by developing a theory of affine Lie group actions for k-polysymplectic momentum maps, removing the necessity of their co-adjoint equivariance. Then, we focus on the analysis of a particular case of k-polysymplectic manifolds, the so-called fibred ones, and we study their k-polysymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reductions. Previous results allow us to devise a k-polycosymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reduction theory, which represents one of our main results. Our findings are applied to study coupled vibrating strings and, more generally, k-polycosymplectic Hamiltonian systems with field symmetries. We show that k-polycosymplectic geometry can be understood as a particular type of k-polysymplectic geometry. Finally, a k-cosymplectic to l-cosymplectic geometric reduction theory is presented, which reduces, geometrically, the space-time variables in a k-cosymplectic framework. An application of this latter result to a vibrating membrane with symmetries is given.

Abstract:This manuscript is essentially a collection of lecture notes which were given by the first author at the Summer School Wisl-2019, Poland and written down by the second author. As the title suggests, the material covered here includes the Poisson and symplectic structures (Poisson manifolds, Poisson bi-vectors and Poisson brackets), group actions and orbits (infinitesimal action, stabilizers and adjoint representations), moment maps, Poisson and Hamiltonian actions. Finally, the phase space reduction is also discussed. The very last section introduces the Poisson-Lie structures along with some related notions. This text represents a brief review of a well-known material citing standard references for more details. The exposition is concise, but pedagogical. The Authors believe that it will be useful as an introductory exposition for students interested in this specific topic.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the reduction process of a contact Lagrangian system whose Lagrangian is invariant under a group of symmetries. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare-Herglotz equations. Our framework relied on the associated Herglotz vector field and its projected vector field, and the use of well-chosen quasi-velocities. Some examples are also discussed.

Abstract:For partial differential equations (PDEs) that have $n\geq2$ independent variables and a symmetry algebra of dimension at least $n-1$, an explicit algorithmic method is presented for finding all symmetry-invariant conservation laws that will reduce to first integrals for the ordinary differential equation (ODE) describing symmetry-invariant solutions of the PDE. This significantly generalizes the double reduction method known in the literature. Moreover, the condition of symmetry-invariance of a conservation law is formulated in an improved way by using multipliers, thereby allowing symmetry-invariant conservation laws to be obtained directly, without the need to first find conservation laws and then check their invariance. This cuts down considerably the number and complexity of computational steps involved in the reduction method. If the space of symmetry-invariant conservation laws has dimension $m\geq 1$, then the method yields $m$ first integrals along with a check of which ones are non-trivial via their multipliers. Several examples of interesting symmetry reductions are considered: travelling waves and similarity solutions in $1+1$ dimensions; line travelling waves, line similarity solutions, and similarity travelling waves in $2+1$ dimensions; rotationally symmetric similarity solutions in $n+1$ dimensions. In addition, examples of nonlinear PDEs for which the method yields the explicit general solution for symmetry-invariant solutions are shown.

Abstract:This is a survey article, from the viewpoint of the completeness of the Marsden- Weinstein reduction, to introduce briefly some recent developments of the symmetric reductions and Hamilton-Jacobi theory of the regular controlled Hamiltonian systems, the nonholonomic controlled Hamiltonian systems and the controlled magnetic Hamiltonian systems. These research reveal the deeply internal relationships of the geometrical structures of phase spaces, the nonholonomic constraint, the dynamical vector fields and the controls of these systems.

Abstract:We develop a general theory of symmetry reduction of states on (possibly non-commutative) *-algebras that are equipped with a Poisson bracket and a Hamiltonian action of a commutative Lie algebra $g$. The key idea advocated for in this article is that the ``correct'' notion of positivity on a *-algebra $A$ is not necessarily the algebraic one, for which positive elements are sums of Hermitian squares $a^*a$ with $a \in A$, but can be a more general one that depends on the example at hand, like pointwise positivity on *-algebras of functions or positivity in a representation as operators. The notion of states (normalized positive Hermitian linear functionals) on $A$ thus depends on this choice of positivity on $A$, and the notion of positivity on the reduced algebra $A_{red}$ should be such that states on $A_{red}$ are obtained as reductions of certain states on $A$. We discuss three examples in detail: Reduction of the *-algebra of smooth functions on a Poisson manifold $M$, reduction of the Weyl algebra with respect to translation symmetry, and reduction of the polynomial algebra with respect to a $U(1)$-action.
