Abstract:For Hamiltonian field theories on polysymplectic manifolds with a symmetry group action and a momentum map, we explore the redundancy in a set of necessary conditions that has appeared in the literature, for a generalized version of the Marsden-Weinstein symmetry reduction theorem. Next, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for polycosymplectic reduction. We relate polycosymplectic reduction in a one-to-one way to the reduction of an associated larger polysymplectic manifold. Throughout the paper, we provide examples and discuss special cases.

Abstract:We show that contact reductions can be described in terms of symplectic reductions in the traditional Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer as well as the constant rank picture. The point is that we view contact structures as particular (homogeneous) symplectic structures. A group action by contactomorphisms is lifted to a Hamiltonian action on the corresponding symplectic manifold, called the symplectic cover of the contact manifold. In contrast to the majority of the literature in the subject, our approach includes general contact structures (not only co-oriented) and changes the traditional view point: contact Hamiltonians and contact moment maps for contactomorphism groups are no longer defined on the contact manifold itself, but on its symplectic cover. Actually, the developed framework for reductions is slightly more general than purely contact, and includes a precontact and presymplectic setting which is based on the observation that there is a one-to-one correspondence between isomorphism classes of precontact manifolds and certain homogeneous presymplectic manifolds.

Abstract:We present a quick review of several reduction techniques for symplectic and Poisson manifolds using local and global symmetries compatible with these structures. Reduction based on the standard momentum map (symplectic or Marsden–Weinstein reduction) and on generalized distributions (the optimal momentum map and optimal reduction) is emphasized. Reduction of Poisson brackets is also discussed and it is shown how it defines induced Poisson structures on cosymplectic and coisotropic submanifolds.

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:This paper proves a symplectic reduction by stages theorem in the context of geometric mechanics on symplectic manifolds with symmetry groups that are group extensions. We relate the work to the semidirect product reduction theory developed in the 1980's by Marsden, Ratiu, Weinstein, Guillemin and Sternberg, as well as some more recent results and we recall how semidirect product reduction finds use in examples, such as the dynamics of an underwater vehicle.We shall start with the classical cases of commuting reduction (first appearing in Marsden and Weinstein, 1974) and present a new proof and approach to semidirect product theory. We shall then give an idea of how the more general theory of group extensions proceeds (the details of which are given in Marsden, Misiolek, Perlmutter and Ratiu, 1998). The case of central extensions is illustrated in this paper with the example of the Heisenberg group. The theory, however, applies to many other interesting examples such as the Bott-Virasoro group and the KdV equation.

Abstract:We review and slightly improve the known k-polysymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reduction theory by removing some technical conditions on k-polysymplectic momentum maps by developing a theory of affine Lie group actions for k-polysymplectic momentum maps, removing the necessity of their co-adjoint equivariance. Then, we focus on the analysis of a particular case of k-polysymplectic manifolds, the so-called fibred ones, and we study their k-polysymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reductions. Previous results allow us to devise a k-polycosymplectic Marsden--Weinstein reduction theory, which represents one of our main results. Our findings are applied to study coupled vibrating strings and, more generally, k-polycosymplectic Hamiltonian systems with field symmetries. We show that k-polycosymplectic geometry can be understood as a particular type of k-polysymplectic geometry. Finally, a k-cosymplectic to l-cosymplectic geometric reduction theory is presented, which reduces, geometrically, the space-time variables in a k-cosymplectic framework. An application of this latter result to a vibrating membrane with symmetries is given.

Abstract:There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux et al. In this case it will be shown that the three reduced spaces mentioned above do not coincide, in general. More specifically, the Marsden-Weinstein reduced spaces are not symplectic but Poisson and their symplectic leaves are given by the optimal reduced spaces. Foliation reduction produces a symplectic reduced space whose Poisson quotient by a certain Lie group associated to the group of symmetries of the problem equals the Marsden-Weinstein reduced space. We illustrate these constructions with concrete examples, special emphasis being given to the reduction of a magnetic cotangent bundle of a Lie group in the situation when the magnetic term ensures the non-existence of the momentum map for the lifted action. The precise relation of the cylinder valued momentum map with group valued momentum maps for Abelian Lie groups is also given.

Abstract:We extend our earlier work in [TZ1], where an analytic approach to the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture [GS] was developed, to cases where the Spin^c-complex under consideration is allowed to be further twisted by certain exterior power bundles of the cotangent bundle. The main result is a weighted quantization formula in the presence of commuting Hamiltonian actions. The corresponding Morse-type inequalities in holomorphic situations are also established.

Abstract:In 1986, Albert proposed a Marsden-Weinstein reduction process for cosymplectic structures. In this paper, we present the limitations of this theory in the application of the reduction of symmetric time-dependent Hamiltonian systems. As a consequence, we conclude that cosymplectic geometry is not appropriate for this reduction. Motived for this fact, we replace cosymplectic structures by more general structures: mechanical presymplectic structures. Then, we develop Marsden-Weinstein reduction for this kind of structures and we apply this theory to interesting examples of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems for which Albert's reduction method doesn't work.

Abstract:In this paper we study coisotropic reduction in multisymplectic geometry. On the one hand, we give an interpretation of Hamiltonian multivector fields as Lagrangian submanifolds and prove that $k$-coisotropic submanifolds induce a Lie subalgebra in the algebra of Hamiltonian $(k-1)$-forms, similar to how coisotropic submanifolds in symplectic geometry induce a Lie subalgebra under the Poisson bracket. On the other hand, we extend the classical result of symplectic geometry of projection of Lagrangian submanifolds in coisotropic reduction to bundles of forms, which naturally carry a multisymplectic structure.

Abstract:The notions of coKähler manifolds and 3-cosymplectic manifolds are odd-dimensional analogues of the ones of Kähler manifolds and hyperKähler manifolds, respectively. In this paper, we obtain reduction theorems of coKähler manifolds and 3-cosymplectic manifolds. We show that Kähler and coKähler (hyperKähler and 3-cosymplectic) reductions admit a natural compatibility with respect to ``cylinder constructions". We further prove the compatibility of Kähler and coKähler reductions with respect to the "mapping torus construction".

Abstract:In this paper we work, first, with forced discrete-time mechanical systems on the configuration space $Q$ and construct closed $2$-forms $\omega^+$ and $\omega^-$ on $Q \times Q$, that are symplectic if and only if the system is regular. For a special type of discrete force, we prove that $\omega^+$ and $\omega^-$ are invariant by the flow of the system. We also consider the Lagrangian reduction of a discrete mechanical system by a symmetry group (using an affine discrete connection derived from the discrete momentum) and prove that, under some conditions on the action, the trajectories of the reduced system (with constant discrete momentum $\mu$) can be seen as trajectories of a forced discrete mechanical system, where the discrete force is of the type analyzed before. Therefore, we prove that there is a symplectic structure that is invariant by the flow of the forced reduced system; the symplectic structure can be seen as a pullback of a canonical cotangent structure plus a magnetic term. This discrete reduction process is the (discrete) Routh reduction and the behavior obtained runs parallel to the well known case for (continuous) Routh reduction.

Abstract:For Hermitian connections on a Hermitian complex line bundle over a Riemannian manifold, we can define the ``volume", which can be considered to be the ``mirror" of the standard volume for submanifolds. We call the critical points minimal connections. In this paper, (1) we prove monotonicity formulas for minimal connections with respect to some versions of volume functionals, which would be important in bubbling analysis. As a corollary, we obtain the vanishing theorem for minimal connections in the odd-dimensional case. (2) We see that the formal ``large radius limit" of the defining equation of minimal connections is that of Yang-Mills connections. Then the existence theorem of minimal connections is proved for a ``sufficiently large" metric. (3) We can consider deformed Donaldson-Thomas (dDT) connections on $G_2$-manifolds as ``mirrors" of calibrated (associative) submanifolds. We show that dDT connections are minimal connections, just as calibrated submanifolds are minimal submanifolds. By the argument specific to dDT connections, we obtain the stronger monotonicity formulas and vanishing theorem for dDT connections than in (1).
