Abstract:This paper studies the relations between Guangzhou,Hong Kong and Shanghai during the plague in 1894 by examining the relevant reports in Shen Bao.Guangzhou adopted the traditional measure to cope with the plague, while Hong Kong and Shanghai took some different measures. This greatly promoted the development of public health in the two big cities, as well as the development of health inspection in the two big cities and Chinese coastal cities. In this process, discussions about the role of the government in public media implied denial of the traditional Chinese social system and national system. The plague in 1894 showed that a new networked ecosystem was constantly changing the world, the ways people looked at the world and people’s expectation and imagination of the future world. In a sense, we can regard the modern Chinese social vicissitudes as essentially ecological changes, and we can also think of the ecological changes of nearly a hundred years as essentially social vicissitudes.
