Abstract:An identity found by Müller (Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 53 (2001) 567) for normal distributions is generalized to Kotz-type distributions. Some stochastic orders of Kotz-type distributions are discussed by means of this identity.

Abstract:In this paper,we study the stochastic comparisons of order statistics from generalized normal distributions.We obtain some sufficient conditions for ordering results based on parameter matrix and vector majorization comparisons.These conditions are necessary in some cases.

Abstract:We derive formulas for the number of points on the basic stratum of certain Kottwitz varieties in terms of automorphic representations and certain explicit polynomials, for which we present efficient algorithms for computation. We obtain our results using the trace formula, base change, representations of general linear groups over p-adic fields, and a truncation of the formula of Kottwitz for the number of points on Shimura varieties over finite fields.

Abstract:Exchangeable sequences of random probability measures (partitions of mass) and their corresponding exchangeable bridges play an important role in a variety of areas in probability, statistics and related areas, including Bayesian statistics, physics, finance and machine learning. An area of theoretical as well as practical interest, is the study of coagulation and fragmentation operators on partitions of mass. In this regard, an interesting but formidable question is the identification of operators and distributional families on mass partitions that exhibit interesting duality relations. In this paper we identify duality relations for a large sub-class of mixed Poisson-Kingman models generated by a stable subordinator. Our results are natural generalizations of the duality relations developed in Pitman, Bertoin and Goldschmidt, and Dong, Goldschmidt and Martin for the two-parameter Poisson Dirichlet family. These results are deduced from results for corresponding bridges.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for a Poisson binomial random variable to be stochastically larger (or smaller) than a binomial random variable. It is then used to deal with the stochastic comparisons of order statistics from heterogeneous populations with those from a homogeneous population. The result has obvious applications in the stochastic comparisons of lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems having independent components.

Abstract:Kotlarski's identity has been widely used in applied economic research. However, how to conduct inference based on this popular identification approach has been an open question for two decades. This paper addresses this open problem by constructing a novel confidence band for the density function of a latent variable in repeated measurement error model. The confidence band builds on our finding that we can rewrite Kotlarski's identity as a system of linear moment restrictions. The confidence band controls the asymptotic size uniformly over a class of data generating processes, and it is consistent against all fixed alternatives. Simulation studies support our theoretical results.

Abstract:The article considers the multivariate stochastic orders of upper orthants, lower orthants and positive quadrant dependence (PQD) among simple max-stable distributions and their exponent measures. It is shown for each order that it holds for the max-stable distribution if and only if it holds for the corresponding exponent measure. The finding is non-trivial for upper orthants (and hence PQD order). From dimension these three orders are not equivalent and a variety of phenomena can occur. However, every simple max-stable distribution PQD-dominates the corresponding independent model and is PQD-dominated by the fully dependent model. Among parametric models the asymmetric Dirichlet family and the Hüsler-Reiß family turn out to be PQD-ordered according to the natural order within their parameter spaces. For the Hüsler-Reiß family this holds true even for the supermodular order.

Abstract:In this article, we present a general method for deriving Stein-like identity and Chernoff-like inequality based on orthogonal polynomials. In order to illustrate our method, some applications are given with respect to normal, Gamma, Beta, Poisson, binomial, and negative binomial distribution, not only for random variables but also for random vectors, resulting corresponding Stein-like identity and Chernoff-like inequality are obtained consequently. Within our best knowledge, some of our matrix version results are new in the literature. In addition, forward difference formulae of Charlier polynomials, Krawtchouk polynomials and Meixner polynomials, Stein-like identity, and Chernoff-like inequality with respect to Beta distribution, as well as Rodrigues formula of Meixner polynomials are also prepared in the first time within our limited information. Interestingly, as far as normal, Gamma, Beta, Poisson, binomial, and negative binomial distribution are concerned, we found that their Stein-like identity and corresponding Chernoff-like inequality are related closely, by examining their Rodrigues formula.
A weighted identity for stochastic partial differential operators and its applications

Abstract:In this paper, a weighted identity for some stochastic partial differential operators (with complex principal parts) is established. This identity presents a unified approach in establishing Carleman-type estimates for some deterministic/stochastic partial differential equations. Based on this identity, one can deduce some known global Carleman estimates for stochastic parabolic equations, stochastic Schrödinger equations, stochastic transport equations and their deterministic counterparts. Meanwhile, as its applications, we derive two different Carleman estimates for linear forward stochastic complex Ginzburg–Landau equations. They can be used to study the controllability/observability and inverse problems for some stochastic complex Ginzburg–Landau equations, respectively.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of multivariate elliptically symmetric distributions including elliptically symmetric logistic distributions and Kotz type distributions. We investigate the various probabilistic properties including marginal distributions, conditional distributions, linear transformations, characteristic functions and dependence measure in the perspective of the inconsistency property. In addition, we provide a real data example to show that the new distributions have reasonable flexibility.

Abstract:Whenever graphs admit equitable partitions, their quotient graphs highlight the structure evidenced by the partition. It is therefore very natural to ask what can be said about two graphs that have the same quotient according to certain equitable partitions. This question has been connected to the theory of fractional isomorphisms and covers of graphs in well-known results that we briefly survey in this paper. We then depart to develop theory of what happens when the two graphs have the same symmetrized quotient, proving a structural result connecting this with the existence of certain doubly stochastic matrices. We apply this theorem to derive a new characterization of when two graphs have the same combinatorial quotient, and we also study graphs with weighted vertices and the related concept of pseudo-equitable partitions. Our results connect to known old and recent results, and are naturally applicable to study quantum walks.

Abstract:In this paper we focus on continuous univariate probability distributions, like McKay distributions, $K$-distribution, generalized inverse Gaussian distribution and generalised McKay distributions, with support $[0,\infty),$ which are related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and in most cases we show that they belong to the class infinitely divisible distributions, self-decomposable distributions, generalized gamma convolutions and hyperbolically completely monotone densities. Some of the results are known, however the proofs are new and we use special functions technique. Integral representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions as well as of quotients of Gaussian hypergeometric functions, or modified Bessel functions of the second kind play an important role in our study. In addition, by using a different approach we rediscover a Stieltjes transform representation due to Hermann Hankel for the product of modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds and we also deduce a series of new Stieltjes transform representations for products, quotients and their reciprocals concerning modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. By using these results we obtain new infinitely divisible modified Bessel distributions with Laplace transforms related to modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind. Moreover, we show that the new Stieltjes transform representations have some interesting applications and we list some open problems which may be of interest for further research. In addition, we present a new proof via the Pick function characterization theorem for the infinite divisibility of the ratio of two gamma random variables and we present some new Stieltjes transform representations of quotients of Tricomi hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:The concept of kurtosis is used to describe and compare theoretical and empirical distributions in a multitude of applications. In this connection, it is commonly applied to asymmetric distributions. However, there is no rigorous mathematical foundation establishing what is meant by kurtosis of an asymmetric distribution and what is required to measure it properly. All corresponding proposals in the literature centre the comparison with respect to kurtosis around some measure of central location. Since this either disregards critical amounts of information or is too restrictive, we instead revisit a canonical approach that has barely received any attention in the literature. It reveals the non-transitivity of kurtosis orderings due to an intrinsic entanglement of kurtosis and skewness as the underlying problem. This is circumvented by restricting attention to sets of distributions with equal skewness, on which the proposed kurtosis ordering is shown to be transitive. Moreover, we introduce a functional that preserves this order for arbitrary asymmetric distributions. As application, we examine the families of Weibull and sinh-arcsinh distributions and show that the latter family exhibits a skewness-invariant kurtosis behaviour.

Abstract:Motivated by the need for parametric families of rich and yet tractable distributions in financial mathematics, both in pricing and risk management settings, but also considering wider statistical applications, we investigate a novel technique for introducing skewness or kurtosis into a symmetric or other distribution. We use a "transmutation" map, which is the functional composition of the cumulative distribution function of one distribution with the inverse cumulative distribution (quantile) function of another. In contrast to the Gram-Charlier approach, this is done without resorting to an asymptotic expansion, and so avoids the pathologies that are often associated with it. Examples of parametric distributions that we can generate in this way include the skew-uniform, skew-exponential, skew-normal, and skew-kurtotic-normal.
