Abstract:For Chinese study on Jew,1949-1978 was a period of standstill.After the implementation of reform and opening,the study on Jew began to revive and develop a new stage.Some professional research organizations and institutes were set up,large numbers of books and papers on Jew were published,and lessons on Jew history and culture activated in universities,and international academic activities and exchanges flourished,those gave a great push to promote Chinese study on Jew.The enhancement of the study on Jew will help Chinese people understand more about the Mideast issue and master the identity of the conflicts in the Middle East,and it will also promote the study on the life and the Diaspora History of Jew in China.

Abstract:In the 1920s and 1930s,Chinese students in Germany try their best to show Chinese positive impression,fully display the unique charm of Chinese culture,disseminate Chinese traditional classics,music,and modern social science by different ways,such as translated works,culture exhibition organized by the Chinese,lectures,and so on.There are some important reasons.Firstly,the improvement of Sino-German relations and the development of education studying in Germany are good for disseminating Chinese culture.So,it is a cultural awareness and cultural responsibility to publicize widely Chinese culture.Secondly,the development of the China Studies in Germany and German intellectuals' strong interests in Chinese culture provide a suitable soil for Chinese cultural transmission.

Abstract:This paper argues that the nationwide debate,in the 1990s,about the Chinese translation of Stendal's Le Rouge et le Noir was a significant,historic event.The event has drawn attention to the ethical aspect of translation and inspired Chinese scholars with theoretical awareness in their translation research and criticism.It is and will long be remembered for its contribution to the building of new scaffoldings for Chinese translators and critics to perform translation criticism.To a remarkable degree,it provoked thinking,on the part of the then enthusiastic reading community of foreign literature,about literary translation.

Abstract:Stimulated by his participation in two recent museum exhibitions concerning the Cultural Revolution the author of this article offers his contrarian views on the history and lasting significance of China's ten-year-long Cultural Revolution. Acknowledging that there was indeed senseless and brutal acts of violence from 1966 to 1976, the author asks whether the violence ever rose to the level of a “holocaust,” as commentators inside and outside China have charged. He next explores the charge that the Cultural Revolution resulted in the deliberate destruction of Chinese culture and tradition. The picture the author paints of this turbulent period in China's history is one not often aired in academic circles or in public discourse. He closes by putting the violence of the Cultural Revolution in the broader context of violence that was happening elsewhere during that period, e.g., in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Abstract:The authors conducted a bibliometric analysis for the articles on forgiveness that included in China Journal Net,got results as following:1)The studies on forgiveness showed a year-by-year growth trend;2)The articles published in a wide range,including in journal of different universities,psychology periodicals,medical periodicals,educationnal periodicals and social class periodicals;3)Colleges and universities are the main agency for scientific research;4)The type of researches mainly reflected in summary,and lacked of empirical studies;5)Co-operative research don't become the research trend of studying the forgiveness;6))The overall project funding effort for research papers was not enough.

Abstract:China studies,which originated more than half a century ago from the West,especially the United States,has undergone varied changes in its observation perspectives and research paradigms.It is at present being animated in an unprecedented way by the ever more fierce wave of globalization and the massive transformation of the Chinese society.On one hand,globalization has ushered in transnational mobility for researchers and widened their international horizons.Not only the subjects of China studies are pluralized but also the subjects and objects,namely those social actors under re-search,may together create a"perspective fusion"and thus a new cognitive model of China.On the other hand,the uniqueness of China’s social transformation,makes it possible for indigenous empiri-cal data from China studies to function as a touchstone of the explanatory power of existing theories in social sciences.Meanwhile,from those data may also derive new theories and solutions of social prob-lems that strike other countries and regions in their process of development.In this sense,the interna-tional perspectives and indigenous significances of China studies have laid the foundation for a pluralis-tic paradigm that embodies the juxtaposition of subjects and objects.

Abstract:National Studies has become a heated topic in the academic circle in China.The establishments of Confucius Institutes in many countries draw the world's attention to China's "National Studies".The focus is how the national studies can be reconstructed in the global background and the peaceful context of China.For this,the chief editor of the national studies edition of Guangming Daily organized a forum,which was hosted by Professor XU Jie-shun,director of Institute of Anthropological Research,South-Central University for Nationalities.Many famous professors attended the forum,such as YE Shu-xian from Institute of Literature,Chinese Academy of Social Sciences;WANG Ming-ming from Beijing University;PENG Zhao-rong from Xiamen University;XU Xin-jian from Sichuan University and ZHEN Ren-zhao from Institute of Historical Research,Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.The anthropologists aired their views about the relationship between National Studies and Anthropology.This journal presents the recording transcript of the forum to benefit the readers.

Abstract:Abstract This survey explains how the field of Cold War studies has been able to survive and even flourish in the People's Republic of China (PRC) from 2000 to the present, despite all the practical and political obstacles. It reviews several areas that Chinese scholars have been exploring: the economic Cold War; foreign intelligence operations and psychological warfare; nuclear strategies; the sciences during the Cold War and overseas education projects; and China's policies toward neighboring countries during the Cold War. The article outlines the major practical challenges facing Chinese scholars and the potential for overcoming these challenges.

The development of contemporary China studies is closely related to that of the Chinese society, and the specific pattern of the studies is the result of the interaction between the prevailing model of the social science theory and the degree to which the Chinese society has been opening to the outside world. Therefore, the studies have now become a comprehensive discipline of social sciences about the changes and development of the Chinese society with the participation of Chinese scholars.

Abstract:Due to the fact that China studies originated in the West,China was inevi-tably characterized as "the other" from the beginning in the comprehensive domain of social sciences. On this stand two analytical models have appeared,namely the "impact-response" and the "state-society" ,and both have China as the research object and use dichotomous interpretation framework. Against the background of globalization,thanks to the rise of China itself and the variety of its researchers,the etic stands adopted in previous China studies are beginning to give way. Not only Chinese scholars,who were once members of a nation as a research object,aspire to establish China's subjectivity in its studies,but also non-Chinese scholars hope to mould their own nations'subjectivity while studying China. Besides,the latter are seeking after real understanding of "the other" through "otherizing" themselves. Therefore,in China studies,the juxtaposition of subjects and objects,and the possible compatibility of different subjects,may provide new means of paradigm reconstruction for contemporary China studies.
The power of history: How a victimization narrative shapes national identity and public opinion in China

Abstract:We study the effect of a victimization narrative on national identity and public opinion in China experimentally. Previous research has suggested that governments can shape public opinion by guiding citizens’ collective memories of historical events, but few studies have established a clear causal link. By conducting an online survey experiment among 1890 urban Chinese citizens, we examine the causal impact of historical narratives on political attitudes. We find that, compared to control conditions, a narrative focusing on China’s humiliating past in the late Qing significantly reinforces respondents’ attachment to the victim side of the Chinese national identity, raises suspicion of the intention of foreign governments in international disputes, stimulates preference for more hawkish foreign policies, and strengthens support for China’s current political system. These effects are particularly strong among respondents without a college degree.
