Abstract:An intelligent interface architecture for human-computer cooperation named IAMA (Intelligent Architecture based on Multi-Agent) is proposed. The problems on dealing with temporal relation of multimedia object, intelligent guiding and application semantic in IAMA are discussed. IAMA is based on multi-agent model in which each visual element cooperates with each other to provide continuous support to user. The control agent coordinates communication among visual elements, and the agent provides user interest model and reasoning service. IAMA supports larger grain reuse and flexible interface system composition. An example using this architecture is introduced to show the effectiveness of IAMA.

Abstract:An open architecture of information integrating based on multi-agent (OAIIA) was proposed. OAIIA consists of interface tier, coordination tier and model tier, and each tier is composed of multi-agent. Due to the explicit three-tier structure of OAIIA and the autonomy, sociability, reactivity and rationality of multi-agent, the enterprise information integrating platform based on OAIIA has many advantages such as good open ability, integration ability and self adaptability. The implementation technique and a case of supporting dynamic business process based on OAIIA were discussed.

Abstract:A trend in agent community or enterprises is that they are shifting from closed to open architectures composed of a large number of autonomous agents. One of its implications could be that interface agent framework is getting more important in multi-agent system (MAS); so that systems constructed for different application domains could share a common understanding in human computer interface (HCI) methods, as well as human-agent and agent-agent interfaces. However, interface agent framework usually receives less attention than other aspects of MAS. In this paper, we will propose an interface web agent framework which is based on our former project called WAF and a Distributed HCI template. A group of new functionalities and implications will be discussed, such as web agent presentation, off-line agent reference, reconfigurable activation map of agents, etc. Their enabling techniques and current standards (e.g. existing ontological framework) are also suggested and shown by examples from our own implementation in WAF.

Abstract:The Grid and agent communities both develop concepts and mechanisms for open distributed systems, albeit from different perspectives. The Grid community has focused on infrastructure, tools and application for reliable and secure resource sharing within dynamic and geographically distributed virtual organizations. In contrast, the agents community has focused on autonomous problem solvers that can flexibly in uncertain and dynamic environments. Yet as the scale and ambition of both Grid and agent deployments increase, we see that multi-agent systems require robust infrastructure and Grid systems require autonomous, flexible behaviors. So, an Agent Based Grid Infrastructure of Social Intelligence (ABGISI) is presented in this paper. With multi-agents cooperation as main line, this paper expatiates on ABGISI from three aspects: agent information representation; the support system for agent social behavior, which includes agent mediate system and agent rational negotiation mechanism, and agent federation structure.

Abstract:A well-known problem of World Wide Web (WWW) is that it contains ultra-large amount of information that often makes it difficult for users to find out their desired information. We propose and implement architecture of ontology-based information gathering agents. The ontology is represented by object-oriented approach with procedural attachments. The information gathering agents could carry out the search by wrapping the search engines of various kinds as their search methods and perform planning and integration of the partial information gathering results. The users also can represent their queries in terms of the shared domain ontology to reduce their conceptual gaps with agents. It shows how information gathering agents could utilize domain knowledge and integrate information gathered from disparate information resources and provide much more coherent results for the users.

Abstract:This survey paper examines the recent advancements in AI agent implementations, with a focus on their ability to achieve complex goals that require enhanced reasoning, planning, and tool execution capabilities. The primary objectives of this work are to a) communicate the current capabilities and limitations of existing AI agent implementations, b) share insights gained from our observations of these systems in action, and c) suggest important considerations for future developments in AI agent design. We achieve this by providing overviews of single-agent and multi-agent architectures, identifying key patterns and divergences in design choices, and evaluating their overall impact on accomplishing a provided goal. Our contribution outlines key themes when selecting an agentic architecture, the impact of leadership on agent systems, agent communication styles, and key phases for planning, execution, and reflection that enable robust AI agent systems.

Abstract:Abstract Intelligent agents (IAs) are permeating both business and society. However, interacting with IAs poses challenges moving beyond technological limitations towards the human-computer interface. Thus, the knowledgebase related to interaction with IAs has grown exponentially but remains segregated and impedes the advancement of the field. Therefore, we conduct a systematic literature review to integrate empirical knowledge on user interaction with IAs. This is the first paper to examine 107 Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction papers and identified 389 relationships between design elements and user acceptance of IAs. Along the independent and dependent variables of these relationships, we span a research space model encompassing empirical research on designing for IA user acceptance. Further we contribute to theory, by presenting a research agenda along the dimensions of the research space, which shall be useful to both researchers and practitioners. This complements the past and present knowledge on designing for IA user acceptance with potential pathways into the future of IAs.

Abstract:Semantic web technologies have shown their effectiveness, especially when it comes to knowledge representation, reasoning, and data integration. However, the original semantic web vision, whereby machine readable web data could be automatically actioned upon by intelligent software web agents, has yet to be realised. In order to better understand the existing technological opportunities and challenges, in this paper we examine the status quo in terms of intelligent software web agents, guided by research with respect to requirements and architectural components, coming from the agents community. We use the identified requirements to both further elaborate on the semantic web agent motivating use case scenario, and to summarise different perspectives on the requirements from the semantic web agent literature. We subsequently propose a hybrid semantic web agent architecture, and use the various components and subcomponents in order to provide a focused discussion in relation to existing semantic web standards and community activities. Finally, we highlight open research opportunities and challenges and take a broader perspective of the research by discussing the potential for intelligent software web agents as an enabling technology for emerging domains, such as digital assistants, cloud computing, and the internet of things.

Agent-E: From Autonomous Web Navigation to Foundational Design Principles in Agentic Systems

Abstract:AI Agents are changing the way work gets done, both in consumer and enterprise domains. However, the design patterns and architectures to build highly capable agents or multi-agent systems are still developing, and the understanding of the implication of various design choices and algorithms is still evolving. In this paper, we present our work on building a novel web agent, Agent-E \footnote{Our code is available at \url{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/EmergenceAI/Agent-E" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}}. Agent-E introduces numerous architectural improvements over prior state-of-the-art web agents such as hierarchical architecture, flexible DOM distillation and denoising method, and the concept of \textit{change observation} to guide the agent towards more accurate performance. We first present the results of an evaluation of Agent-E on WebVoyager benchmark dataset and show that Agent-E beats other SOTA text and multi-modal web agents on this benchmark in most categories by 10-30\%. We then synthesize our learnings from the development of Agent-E into general design principles for developing agentic systems. These include the use of domain-specific primitive skills, the importance of distillation and de-noising of environmental observations, the advantages of a hierarchical architecture, and the role of agentic self-improvement to enhance agent efficiency and efficacy as the agent gathers experience.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for information reorganisation which is particularly suitable for distributed computing, such as Web services. An agent-based architecture is developed to cope with service agents' on and off and provide semantic support for implementation of complex e-business applications that may span diverse enterprises. A frame-based ontology representation is discussed. The representation is well suited for representing complex relationships that are unavailable in current ontology related work. Our approach aims to support dynamic information reorganisation in the Internet based e-business applications. The obtained information can serve for the knowledge acquisition purpose.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of AI technology has led to widespread applications of agent systems across various domains. However, the need for detailed architecture design poses significant challenges in designing and operating these systems. This paper introduces a taxonomy focused on the architectures of foundation-model-based agents, addressing critical aspects such as functional capabilities and non-functional qualities. We also discuss the operations involved in both design-time and run-time phases, providing a comprehensive view of architectural design and operational characteristics. By unifying and detailing these classifications, our taxonomy aims to improve the design of foundation-model-based agents. Additionally, the paper establishes a decision model that guides critical design and runtime decisions, offering a structured approach to enhance the development of foundation-model-based agents. Our contributions include providing a structured architecture design option and guiding the development process of foundation-model-based agents, thereby addressing current fragmentation in the field.

Whereas most work on human-machine teaming has focused on physical agents (e.g. robotic systems), our aim is to study how humans can collaborate with information agents. Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a cognitive agent architecture that can be used in the study of Human-Robot Interaction. The Cognitive Architecture for Perception-Reaction Intelligent Computer Agents (CAPRICA) is an extensible agent library built around the ideas of theory of mind, episodic memory, and embodied cognition. Existing agent research in each of these areas was used to formulate design requirements. We provide an overview of the library's design and discuss future work in progress.
