Abstract:Treatment of bis(phenylethynyl)silane (PhC=C)(2)SiR2 (R = Me (2a), Et (2b) or Ph (2c)) with Cp2ZrEt2 (1) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) and H2O/CuCl in this order afforded (1E,3E)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (3) in 56-88% yields after hydrolysis. On the other hand, hydrolysis of the reaction mixture of 2a-h with Cp2ZrEt2 gave silacyclobutene derivatives 4a-h in 61-87% yields. Zirconium-containing intermediate 7 was obtained as crystals suitable for X-ray analysis when t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands of a zirconocene derivative. Structure of 7 showed that the intermediate contained the zirconacyclobutene-silacyclobutene fused ring system. Reaction of silacyclobutene 4a with CuCl selectively opened the silacyclobutene ring. The further treatment of the reaction mixture with PhI in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(PPh3)(4) gave 1,3,4-triphenyl-1-silyl-1,3-butadiene compound 16. Zirconacyclopentadienes with an alkynylsilyl group at the alpha-position afforded zirconacyclohexadiene derivatives 19 in 82-98% yields. When t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands instead of two Cp, the structure was determined by X-ray analysis. The structure clearly showed that 19 had the zirconacyclohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused ring system.

Abstract:2,5-Bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes 3 were formed highly regio- and chemoselectively in excellent yield by the homocoupling reaction of 2 equiv of bis(alkynyl)silanes 1 mediated by a low-valent zirconocene species (Negishi reagent) generated in situ from Cp2ZrBu2. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of 2,5-bis(phenylalkynyldimethylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadiene (3a) revealed a sandwich-type conformation. Hydrolysis or halogenation of these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 afforded multisubstituted stereodefined Si-bridged conjugated systems. Skeletal rearrangement of these 2,5-bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes with aromatic substituents afforded zirconacyclohexadiene−silacyclobutene fused ring compounds 4. Using these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 as starting reactive organometallic reagents, interesting cyclic compounds such as bis(alkynylsilyl)benzene derivatives and bis(alkynylsilyl)thiophene derivatives could be prepared in high yield. Further applications of these alkynylsilyl-substituted compounds for more complicated products and functional materials can be expected.

Abstract:The first well-defined zirconocene complexes processing vinyl-imine and keteniminate species have been achieved from zirconacyclopentenes or zirconacyclopentadienes and 2 equiv of Ph2CHCN. Multifunctional effect of Ph2CHCN is observed for the first time in one system. This process proceeds via the azazirconacyclopentadiene intermediate and its intramolecular proton transfer. Moreover, β,β′-C–C bond cleavage of tetra-alkyl-substituted zirconacyclopentadienes is observed for the first time under the appropriate conditions.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Bis(alkynyl)silanes react with low valent zirconocene species to afford zircon cyclobutene intermediates. These in situ generated reactive organometallic intermediates can react with alkynes, ketones, aldehydes, and isocyanates by means of a novel skeletal rearrangement. When a zirconacy-clobutene intermediate was treated with an alkyne, an alpha-alkynylsilyl zirco-nacyclopentadiene was formed. Addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and CuCl resulted in one-pot formation of an alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative from three different alkynes. At a higher temperature, the alpha-alkynyl-silylzirconacyclopentadiene was transformed by means of an intramolecular skeletal rearrangement to a zirconacy-clohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused-ring compound, which reacted with DMAD in the presence of CuCl affording the same alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative. When treated with a ketone, an aldehdye, or an isocyanate, the zirconocyclobutene intermediate also underwent the above-mentioned skeletal rearrangement, generating zirconocene-mediated cross-coupling products.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:One-pot synthesis of cyclohexene derivatives from two alkynes and one maleic acid derivative could be achieved. Two alkynes were treated with [Cp2ZrBu2] to give zirconacyclopentadienes. Addition of 2 equiv of H2O followed by the reaction with maleic anhydride at 100 degrees C in toluene for 12 h afforded the cyclohexene derivatives in high yields. The corresponding titanacyclopentadiene did not give the desired product under the same conditions. In the case of Hf, only 8% of the product was obtained. Dienylzirconocene, which could be prepared by the addition of one equiv of EtOH or t-BuOH to the zirconacyclopentadiene, also reacted with maleic anhydride to give the cyclohexene derivative in 82 and 62% yield, respectively.

Abstract:Zirconocene derivatives with interannular MeN(CH2CH2)2, C5H3N(CH2)2-2,6 or C6H4(CH2)2-1,3 bridges were synthesised by the reaction of the corresponding disodium salts with ZrCl4. The crystal structure of dichloro[m-phenylenedimethylenebis(eta5-cyclopentadienyl)]zirconium was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with cell parameters: a = 13.519(4), b = 13.671(3), c = 8.557(2) angstrom, z = 4, R = 0.034 and R' = 0.039.

Abstract:1,2,3,4-Tetrasubstituted cyclopentadienes and indene derivatives with identical or different substituents were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields through a zirconocene- and CuCl-mediated intermolecular coupling process. This synthetic procedure involved three organic partners, including one CH2 I2 , and two different or identical alkynes. Two alkynes or one diyne undergo Cp2Zr(II)-mediated (Cp = η(5)-C5H5) pair-selective reductive coupling to afford the corresponding zirconacyclopentadiene derivatives, which react, in the presence of CuCl and 1,3-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2(1 H)-pyrimidinone (DMPU), with CH2I2 through intermolecular followed by intramolecular coupling to afford the cyclopentadiene derivatives. An application of the prepared tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene derivatives was demonstrated by the facile synthesis of the corresponding zirconocene complexes [((4R)Cp)2ZrCl2] and [((4R)Cp)2ZrR'2] (R' = Me, Et, or nBu). The unique 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene ligands and the corresponding metallocenes are expected to have further applications in organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis.

Abstract:Mononuclear zirconium complex 3a of the molecular identity [Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C (Et) = NNPh]Cl3(THF)2], dinuclear zirconium complexes 3b [{Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C(i‐Pr) = NNPh]2}2(μ2‐Cl)3(μ3‐Cl)2Li(Et2O)] and 3c [{Zr[η2‐(C4H3O)C(t‐Bu) = NNPh]2}2Cl2(μ2‐Cl)2] have been synthesized by the treatment of lithium salt of (C4H3O)C(R) = NNHPh (R = CH3CH2, 1a; R = (CH3)2CH, 1b; R = (CH3)3C, 1c), with different molar ratios of anhydrous zirconium tetrachloride. Of these, complex 3b was formed with lithium adduct and no such adduct was found in complex 3c. Compound 1a and all the zirconium complexes (3a‐3c) were structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies. Thus, it revealed that each hydrazonato ligand acts in a strained η2‐coordination fashion for the three zirconium complexes. The molecular structures of the three zirconium complexes (3a‐3c) reveal the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, complexes 3a and 3b assemble into a two‐dimensional network structure through intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all the complexes namely 3a, 3b, and 3c exhibited moderate catalytic activities toward ethylene polymerization and produced high molecular weight polyethylene with narrow molecular weight distributions.

Abstract:Reactions of diynes RCC-X-CCR with zirconocene ethylene complex Cp(2)Zr(CH2=CH2) were investigated. When X was C6H4 or C4H2S, bridged zirconacyclopentenes were selectively formed. They were easily converted into bridged cyclopentenone derivatives. In the case of (CH2)(n) groups as X, the reaction products were strongly dependent on the R group.

Abstract:Reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv or two equiv of aryl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU afforded mono-arylated diene derivatives in high yields with high selectivities. Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv of 2-thienyl iodide similarly gave thienyldienes in the presence of CuCl and DMPU, whereas the reaction with two equiv of 2-thienyl iodide produced thienyl iododiene derivatives in high yields. Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with two equiv of alkynyl iodides to give iododienynes in good yields in the presence of CuCl. This is in sharp contrast to the reaction with two equiv of alkynyl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU which provides dienediynes.
Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage and Selective Transformation of Zirconacycles

Abstract:This account describes recent development in carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactions and selective transformation of 5-membered zirconacycles, including zirconacyclopentanes, zironacyclopentenes, and zirconacyclopentadienes. These zirconacycles can be prepared by coupling of unsaturated compounds such as alkenes and/or alkynes, but the zirconacycles also undergo beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage, which has been further applied to organic transformation reactions. Combination of the beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage and the C-C bond formation on zirconocene provided a highly selective and novel transformation. Vinylzirconation of alkynes, regioselective allylzirconation of alkynes, and coupling of alkynes with nitriles or ketones were achieved by this method. Zirconacyclopentadienes prepared symmetrically or unsymmetrically were converted into naphthalene, diene, and benzene derivatives. Preparation of benzene derivatives from three different alkynes was performed by combination of C-C bond cleavage and C-C bond formation on zirconocene in one-pot in high yield with excellent selectivity.
