Abstract:The β or metastable β titanium alloys can be achieved by addition of d-electron rich elements, such as Nb, Mo, Ta and so on and an example is Ti-23Nb-0.7Ta-2Zr-1.2O (mol %). From the viewpoint of elastic stability of crystals, the critical valence electron number e/a associated with β to α transition for titanium alloys is about 4.24, and the alloy with this special value of e/a has a high elastic anisotropy, which results in a unique dislocation-free plastic deformation mechanism and mechanical property [1].
