Abstract:In this paper, we defined a new generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters, and gave the upper bound of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters. Moreover, we studied the asymptotic estimation problem of the mean value of the generalized Cochrane sum with Dirichlet characters and obtained a sharp asymptotic formula for it. By using this asymptotic formula, we also gave the mean value of the generalized Dedekind sum.

Abstract:An explicit formula for the quadratic mean value at $s=1$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with the odd Dirichlet characters modulo $f>2$ is known. Here we present a situation where we could prove an explicit formula for the quadratic mean value at $s=1$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with the odd Dirichlet characters modulo not necessarily prime moduli $f>2$ that are trivial on a subgroup $H$ of the multiplicative group $({\mathbb Z}/f{\mathbb Z})^*$. This explicit formula involves summation $S(H,f)$ of Dedekind sums $s(h,f)$ over the $h\in H$. A result on some cancelation of the denominators of the $s(h,f)$'s when computing $S(H,f)$ is known. Here, we prove that for some explicit families of $f$'s and $H$'s this known result on cancelation of denominators is the best result one can expect. Finally, we surprisingly prove that for $p$ a prime, $m\geq 2$ and $1\leq n\leq m/2$, the values of the Dedekind sums $s(h,p^m)$ do not depend on $h$ as $h$ runs over the elements of order $p^n$ of the multiplicative cyclic group $({\mathbb Z}/p^m{\mathbb Z})^*$.

Abstract:We study a generalization of the classical Dedekind sum that incorporates two Dirichlet characters and develop properties that generalize those of the classical Dedekind sum. By calculating the Fourier transform of this generalized Dedekind sum, we obtain an explicit formula for its second moment. Finally, we derive upper and lower bounds for the second moment with nearly identical orders of magnitude.

Bounds on the relative class number of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$ follow. Lately the authors obtained that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi)\vert^2$ is asymptotic to $\pi^2/6$, where $\chi$ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p\equiv 1\pmod{2d}$ which are trivial on a subgroup $H$ of odd order $d$ of the multiplicative group $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$, provided that $d\ll\frac{\log p}{\log\log p}$. Bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac{p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$ follow. Here, for a given integer $d_0>1$ we consider the same questions for the non-primitive odd Dirichlet characters $\chi'$ modulo $d_0p$ induced by the odd primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $p$. We obtain new estimates for Dedekind sums and deduce that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi')\vert^2$ is asymptotic to $\frac{\pi^2}{6}\prod_{q\mid d_0}\left (1-\frac{1}{q^2}\right )$, where $\chi$ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p$ which are trivial on a subgroup $H$ of odd order $d\ll\frac{\log p}{\log\log p}$. As a consequence we improve the previous bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac{p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$. Moreover, we give a method to obtain explicit formulas and use Mersenne primes to show that our restriction on $d$ is essentially sharp.

Hybrid estimation of single exponential sums, exceptional characters and primes in short intervals

Abstract:We provide a new hybrid estimation of single exponential sums, combining Van der Corput, Huxley and Bourgain's result. We also focus on primes in short intervals $(x-x^{\alpha},x]$ under the assumption of the existence of exceptional Dirichlet characters and get a small improvement of a 2004 result of Friedlander and Iwaniec. By using our new estimation of exponential sums, we extend the previous admissible range $0.4937 \leqslant \alpha \leqslant 1$ to $0.4923 \leqslant \alpha \leqslant 1$.

Abstract:The Generalized Riemann Hypothesis implies that at least 50% of the central values $L \left( \frac{1}{2},\chi\right)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. We show that one may unconditionally go beyond GRH, in the sense that if one averages over primitive characters modulo $q$ and averages $q$ over an interval, then at least 50.073% of the central values are non-vanishing. The proof utilizes the mollification method with a three-piece mollifier, and relies on estimates for sums of Kloosterman sums due to Deshouillers and Iwaniec. Note: The author has been made aware of an error in this work. It seems the error can be fixed, by using a different argument, and the author will present a correction in due course.

Modified Dirichlet character sums over the $k$-free integers

Abstract:The main question of this paper is the following: how much cancellation can the partial sums restricted to the $k$-free integers up to $x$ of a $\pm 1$ multiplicative function $f$ be in terms of $x$? Building upon the recent paper by Q. Liu, Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 39 (2023), no. 12, 2316-2328, we prove that under the Riemann Hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, we can get $x^{1/(k+1)}$ cancellation when $f$ is a modified quadratic Dirichlet character, i.e., $f$ is completely multiplicative and for some quadratic Dirichlet character $\chi$, $f(p)=\chi(p)$ for all but a finite subset of prime numbers. This improves the conditional results by Aymone, Medeiros and the author cf. Ramanujan J. 59 (2022), no. 3, 713-728.
