Abstract:In this study, the luffa fibers were investigated as an alternative adsorbent for removing methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. Before the dye adsorption, a plasma treatment at atmospheric pressure was carried out on the raw luffa fibers. The experiments results showed that, compared with untreated luffa fibers of 13mg/g MB adsorption capacity, the maximal MB adsorption was as high as 53 mg/g obtained at the optimal plasma discharge conditions of 110w power, 10s time and 8mm electrode distance. The surface characterization of the untreated and the optimal plasma treated luffa fibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analysis. The results showed that the inner cellulose fiber layers were exposed from the lignin matrix by plasma etching. Plasma treatment did not cause harm to fibers' crystal structure. The plasma etching characters increased the porosity of luffa fibers and the adsorption accessibility of MB dye.
