Abstract:Modality is an important grammatical categ ory in human languages. Although there are various linguistic forms expressing the mod al meaning, modali ty, as a grammatical category, requires all of its members to have a set of comm on formal characteristics and thus to form a closed category. Modal auxiliaries (usually called auxiliary verbs) in Chinese are the core members of the category of modality. In the western literature, modality can be classified into dynamic , deontic, and epistemic modality in terms of kind, and into possibility, pr ob ability, and necessity in terms of degree. This kind of classification provi des a better perspective to analyze the meaning and the evolution of modal auxilia ries.

Abstract:Modality is a means for the speaker to convey his/her attitude towards and judgment of assertions and proposals. Different scholars have made different classifications of modality. For SFL, modal elements belong to modality system. However, as there are no clear formal distinctions among different types of modality, semantic, formal and pragmatic approaches have been adopted. Based on corpora, this paper compares and analyzes the distribution of English central modals in legal and academic texts. It aims to show that central modals have their own ways of distribution in both legal and academic texts, and that they convey specific modal meanings. Meanwhile, it is also shown that the corpus-based approach to modality in specific text types can best reflect the characteristics of modals.

Abstract:The article presents a new view on Chinese modal verbs as a part of speech. Based on the typology of the Chinese language, the authors analyzed modal verbs according to their functional-syntactic, formal-morphological, and semantic features in order of importance. The article discusses the position of modal operators in the sentence and other characteristics. For instance, Chinese modal verbs have no impact on the object and cannot independently form sentences or combine with grammemes. Therefore, the authors believe that Chinese modal verbs (modal operators) belong to the lexical-grammatical group of adverbs as a special category of intentional adverbs. Their intentionality reflects the outward focus of linguistic consciousness, based on the internal reference point of the speaker. The group includes such meanings as "wish", "obligation", "opportunity", "permission", and "will". The research owes its theoretical significance to the fact that it contributes to a better understanding of the essence and nature of modal operators and modality meanings, identifying them as a separate group of adverbs. The obtained results are applicable in the field of theoretical grammar of the Chinese language and can be used in researches related to further analysis of parts of speech problem in the Chinese language.

Abstract:In this study, parallel corpora of the Civil and Commercial Laws and the English translation of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter P. R. C.) are built. Modal verbs in the legal texts are examined from the perspective of genre analysis and semantics. Moreover, a comparative study on different variations of legal genre is adopted. This study further explores the findings from a sociosemiotic perspective in terms of the distinctions on modal verbs and modality between different variations of legal genre. The authors have noticed the disparity of modal verbs in different situations depends on distinct functions of situations. Although linguistic and textual analyses are significant in exploring issues of legal texts, it is not enough to linger within these domains.

Abstract:Recent research on modals and quasi-modals has identified two complementary trends: a rise in the popularity of quasi-modals and a decline in that of modals. There is a strong tendency for American rather than British English to be leading the way in these developments. Furthermore, quasi-modals are thriving in speech, their modal counterparts in writing. This chapter investigates the distribution of a set of semantically similar modals and quasi-modals in a set of matching components of the International Corpus of English. The findings suggest, inter alia, that in the "Inner Circle" it is American English that is predominantly in the box seat in the rise of the quasi-modals and the decline of the modals, and that in the "Outer Circle" it is the more established Englishes that tend to be more advanced in these trends.

Abstract:Linguistic modality is one of the most complex categories, that is why its nature, meanings and ways of expression often become the object of various, at times, controversial theories. The present article described the concept of modality in the context of linguistic research. The purpose of this study was to identify the means of expressing author's modality in Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Russian, determine their relations in intra- and inter-system contexts, and specify the significance of modality for typological studies of these languages. The comparative typological method was mainly used, along with observation, description, transformational analysis, and synthesis of theoretical and practical materials. The results revealed similar and distinctive elements in constructing modal relations in Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Russian. The study suggested various forms of expressing author's modality in a literary text, including explicit means such as modal words, particles, moods and interjections, and implicit means like images, themes, ideas, concepts, symbols, and punctuation. In conclusion, the identification of multi-level means of expressing author's modality in these languages contributed to deepening knowledge on the linguistic category of modality, comparative language study, and translation theory.

Abstract:While a much investigated concept because of its importance in shaping human discourse, modality has still not been given an agreed understanding. Using authentic Chinese court judgments in Hong Kong, this paper aims to unravel the complexity of modality as exemplified in its usage in the legal domain. It examines formal, semantic, and functional approaches to modality, showing their weaknesses in identifying and explaining modality in legal discourse. It proposes a socio-semiotic approach as an alternative for giving us a better understanding of modality in respect of its meaning and function in our language as a sign system.

Abstract:Modal logic has provided important methodologies for linguistic analysis of modals and modal expressions but has done little semantic analysis for a general theory about modals in natural languages.Halliday started from logical relations between propositions and formulated a comprehensive system of Modality in relation to Polarity,echoing developments in multi-value logic and fuzzy logic,and in a sense enriching fuzzy semantics that focuses on the meaningfulness of the third values for criticizing traditional truth-conditional semantics.Meanwhile,Halliday's description of extended uses of modals has led to the discovery of a related system of modality metaphor,which has highlighted semantic analysis of modals on the discursive level,offering substantial analytical methods for a variety of disciplines including Critical Discourse Analysis.

Abstract:The situations are the states of affairs expressed by verbs or sentences and can be subdivided into two types at the first level: the static situation and the dynamic one. The modality is the subjective opinion or manner of the speaker towards the factuality status of an event or the truth value of a proposition expressed by an utterance. As the most important carriers of the modality, the modals in modern Chinese express three types of modality, namely, the epistemic modality, deontic modality and dynamic modality, among which the latter two are terminologically named root modality or non-epistemic modality syncretically.The modality determination of the modals is affected by the types of the situations of the verbs or the sentences. The types of the situations (especially at the first level) and modality restrict each other, therefore, the verbs or sentences of a certain type of situation co-occur obligatorily with the modals expressing a certain type of modality syntactically. The verbs or sentences with static features usually express the static events, which can only be altered to some extent from the dynamic-force perspective and can be exclusively understood by the language speakers under the concept of the epistemic possibility and necessity in modality. The typical static verbs mainly collaborate with the modals expressing epistemic meaning. The polysemic modals of modern Chinese usually interpreted as epistemic reading when they collaborate with the static verbs, e.g., they universally have the epistemic reading when they collaborate with the typical static verbs ″yiweizhe″, ″xiang″ and ″dengyu″, etc., which usually do not co-occur with the non-epistemic modals.The dynamic verbs or the syntactic constructions with the dynamic features express the dynamic events, which can be affected or even changed much more possibly than their counterparts from the perspective of the dynamic-force, and can be impacted or altered readily by the language speakers with permission, obligation and deontic necessity, or ability, desirability, and courage in modality. When the polysemic modals co-occur with dynamic verbs such as the activity verbs, accomplishment verbs; and the dynamic constructions such as dummy verbs construction and ″ba″-construction, they usually have the non-epistemic meaning, viz., deontic modality or dynamic modality, without the other influences than the situation of the verbs and sentences.Because of the interaction between the types of the situations of the verbs or the sentences and the types of modality, the former can be well employed as a dimension of semantic determination of the polysemic modals in modern Chinese, therefore, the situational features of the verbs or the sentences are the interpreter of the modals, which can differentiate the readings of the polysemic modals.

Abstract:Perhaps no other grammatical category in linguistics has been defined and interpreted as divergently as modality. Sometimes vastly different formal categories are subsumed under this label. This paper focusses on the analysis of what are arguably the two major approaches to the definition of modality in present-day linguistics, namely, the one that is based on ‘speakers’ attitudes and opinions’ and the one that is based on a concept of realis/irrealis or factuality. It is argued that the former is fundamentally flawed, as the definition fails to distinguish the formal classes to which it does apply from those to which it do not. In contrast, modality can be neatly and coherently defined in terms of ‘factuality.’ Speakers draw on the formal expressions of this category as one among many categories as their resources to express their attitudes and opinions.

Abstract:Modalities are often used in both spoken and written material. However, people only know the modalities and values manifested in academic written texts once they conduct a study. This research aims to analyze the form and matter of modalities and investigate how these modalities are realized in Covid-19 scholarly articles. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods and Halliday's theory. The data consists of clauses of six COVID-19 social and political journal articles on various topics, such as (social, economic, political, health, communication, and tourism). Data collection was carried out using a documentary approach. The model used in this research is interactive. The data analysis technique uses qualitative descriptive analysis. Based on the findings of this research, 260 clauses contain modality, and two types of modality are used in them. This research also found the realization of modality as a capital operator that is often used in Covid-19 academic papers, as it is. Found 238 capital operators. Apart from that, authors generally use limited modal operators in their articles because there are 238 modal operators located, and this is followed by additional modals with a total of 18. On the other hand, passive verb predicators and adjectives are rarely found.

Abstract:This paper considers ba in Chinese to represent modality and discusses it. A summary of these discussions is as follows. In Chinese, ‘YuQi’ should be understood as having a reactionary response to the speaker's attitude toward the listener in the context of the speech act, using the whole meaning of the sentence as the acting area. In other words, the term must be understood as a sentence pattern about the whole intention and meaning of sentence utterance, and modality should be understood as the level of the speaker’s belief in the sentence proposition or the speaker’s judgment or attitude about the real status of the proposition will be. The semantic structure of the sentence is composed of ‘[S = [P + M] × Y]’(S: sentence, P: proposition, M: modality, Y: YuQi). ‘ba’ is a modality that expresses the subjective attitude of the speaker such as [speculation], [push], [recommendation], [consent], [prompt], [suggestion], [action request]. ‘ba’, which has the meaning function of ‘[Confirmation [guess]]’, belongs to ‘epistemic modality and can be defined as’ [action request], [enforcement],[prompt], [recommendation] and have a meaning function such as ‘deontic modality’ belongs.
