Abstract:This paper attempts to study the meaning of modality in context.It first questions Halliday's idea on the use of modality.It then proposes that the meaning and value of the modal expressions depend upon the context.The same modal expression may have different meanings in different contexts and its value is thus different.

Abstract:In this study, parallel corpora of the Civil and Commercial Laws and the English translation of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter P. R. C.) are built. Modal verbs in the legal texts are examined from the perspective of genre analysis and semantics. Moreover, a comparative study on different variations of legal genre is adopted. This study further explores the findings from a sociosemiotic perspective in terms of the distinctions on modal verbs and modality between different variations of legal genre. The authors have noticed the disparity of modal verbs in different situations depends on distinct functions of situations. Although linguistic and textual analyses are significant in exploring issues of legal texts, it is not enough to linger within these domains.

Abstract:Modal logic has provided important methodologies for linguistic analysis of modals and modal expressions but has done little semantic analysis for a general theory about modals in natural languages.Halliday started from logical relations between propositions and formulated a comprehensive system of Modality in relation to Polarity,echoing developments in multi-value logic and fuzzy logic,and in a sense enriching fuzzy semantics that focuses on the meaningfulness of the third values for criticizing traditional truth-conditional semantics.Meanwhile,Halliday's description of extended uses of modals has led to the discovery of a related system of modality metaphor,which has highlighted semantic analysis of modals on the discursive level,offering substantial analytical methods for a variety of disciplines including Critical Discourse Analysis.

Abstract:While a much investigated concept because of its importance in shaping human discourse, modality has still not been given an agreed understanding. Using authentic Chinese court judgments in Hong Kong, this paper aims to unravel the complexity of modality as exemplified in its usage in the legal domain. It examines formal, semantic, and functional approaches to modality, showing their weaknesses in identifying and explaining modality in legal discourse. It proposes a socio-semiotic approach as an alternative for giving us a better understanding of modality in respect of its meaning and function in our language as a sign system.

Abstract:Modality is the speaker’s subject idea processed and expressed for sentence objective express system. Modal meaning is important for deep understanding of sentence semantics. In this paper, a Chinese modality annotation framework aimed for deep semantic understanding is preliminarily practiced, which constructed a modal meaning classification system on the basis of existing research results, built the modal operator dictionary, established rules for annotation, and annotated modal operators of a sentence which have been tagged basic proposition arguments.

Abstract:The situations are the states of affairs expressed by verbs or sentences and can be subdivided into two types at the first level: the static situation and the dynamic one. The modality is the subjective opinion or manner of the speaker towards the factuality status of an event or the truth value of a proposition expressed by an utterance. As the most important carriers of the modality, the modals in modern Chinese express three types of modality, namely, the epistemic modality, deontic modality and dynamic modality, among which the latter two are terminologically named root modality or non-epistemic modality syncretically.The modality determination of the modals is affected by the types of the situations of the verbs or the sentences. The types of the situations (especially at the first level) and modality restrict each other, therefore, the verbs or sentences of a certain type of situation co-occur obligatorily with the modals expressing a certain type of modality syntactically. The verbs or sentences with static features usually express the static events, which can only be altered to some extent from the dynamic-force perspective and can be exclusively understood by the language speakers under the concept of the epistemic possibility and necessity in modality. The typical static verbs mainly collaborate with the modals expressing epistemic meaning. The polysemic modals of modern Chinese usually interpreted as epistemic reading when they collaborate with the static verbs, e.g., they universally have the epistemic reading when they collaborate with the typical static verbs ″yiweizhe″, ″xiang″ and ″dengyu″, etc., which usually do not co-occur with the non-epistemic modals.The dynamic verbs or the syntactic constructions with the dynamic features express the dynamic events, which can be affected or even changed much more possibly than their counterparts from the perspective of the dynamic-force, and can be impacted or altered readily by the language speakers with permission, obligation and deontic necessity, or ability, desirability, and courage in modality. When the polysemic modals co-occur with dynamic verbs such as the activity verbs, accomplishment verbs; and the dynamic constructions such as dummy verbs construction and ″ba″-construction, they usually have the non-epistemic meaning, viz., deontic modality or dynamic modality, without the other influences than the situation of the verbs and sentences.Because of the interaction between the types of the situations of the verbs or the sentences and the types of modality, the former can be well employed as a dimension of semantic determination of the polysemic modals in modern Chinese, therefore, the situational features of the verbs or the sentences are the interpreter of the modals, which can differentiate the readings of the polysemic modals.

Abstract:Perhaps no other grammatical category in linguistics has been defined and interpreted as divergently as modality. Sometimes vastly different formal categories are subsumed under this label. This paper focusses on the analysis of what are arguably the two major approaches to the definition of modality in present-day linguistics, namely, the one that is based on ‘speakers’ attitudes and opinions’ and the one that is based on a concept of realis/irrealis or factuality. It is argued that the former is fundamentally flawed, as the definition fails to distinguish the formal classes to which it does apply from those to which it do not. In contrast, modality can be neatly and coherently defined in terms of ‘factuality.’ Speakers draw on the formal expressions of this category as one among many categories as their resources to express their attitudes and opinions.

Abstract:Modality and negation, as two important linguistic features used to realise subjectivity, have been investigated within various disciplines, such as logic, linguistics and philosophy, and law. The interaction between modality and negation, as a relatively new and undeveloped domain, has however not been paid due attention in scholarship. This corpus-based study investigates three aspects of their interaction: the differentiation of the deontic value by negation, the categorization of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation via negation, and distribution patterns of deontic modality, especially distribution patterns of the negation of modality, in Hong Kong legislation. This study shows that negation is a powerful linguistic mechanism not only for determining the nature and functions of modality, but also for determining the value of modality. This study also reveals that negation helps us to investigate the distribution of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation and hence revisit the legal framework in Hong Kong. A study taking into account the discursive and professional aspects of the interaction between deontic modality and negation will provide a theoretical basis for the natural language processing of modality and negation in legislation and also offer important implications for the study of negation and modality in general contexts.

Abstract:The article presents a new view on Chinese modal verbs as a part of speech. Based on the typology of the Chinese language, the authors analyzed modal verbs according to their functional-syntactic, formal-morphological, and semantic features in order of importance. The article discusses the position of modal operators in the sentence and other characteristics. For instance, Chinese modal verbs have no impact on the object and cannot independently form sentences or combine with grammemes. Therefore, the authors believe that Chinese modal verbs (modal operators) belong to the lexical-grammatical group of adverbs as a special category of intentional adverbs. Their intentionality reflects the outward focus of linguistic consciousness, based on the internal reference point of the speaker. The group includes such meanings as "wish", "obligation", "opportunity", "permission", and "will". The research owes its theoretical significance to the fact that it contributes to a better understanding of the essence and nature of modal operators and modality meanings, identifying them as a separate group of adverbs. The obtained results are applicable in the field of theoretical grammar of the Chinese language and can be used in researches related to further analysis of parts of speech problem in the Chinese language.

Abstract:Modality plays an important part in verbal communication, as it can reveal the speaker's views and perspectives. The modal verb, as an essential component of the modality system, has been a hot research topic and a challenge in academic circles in recent years. Analyzing the modal verbs in a text may indicate the context produced by the translator in the translation and the identity difference between the translator and the reader. In this study, three representative English translations of Shih chi are selected for comparative analysis with the original text. With the help of corpus techniques, the paper investigates the differences in the use of modal verbs by various translators, the distribution of quantitative changes and their influence on translations, as well as the historical and cultural backgrounds and identities of the translators that led to these differences. It is found that owing to the different professional identities of the translators and historical and cultural contexts in which they live, the choice of modal verbs and the shifts of modality values in the three translations are distinct, leading to different translation styles.

Abstract:The prevailing view on meaning in logical semantics from its inception at the end of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the eighties has been one which is aptly summarized in the slogan ‘meaning equals truth conditions’. This view on meaning is one which can rightly be labeled static: it describes the meaning relation between linguistic expressions and the world as a static relation, one which may itself change through time, but which does not bring about any change itself. For non-sentential expressions (nouns, verbs, modifiers, etc.) the same goes through: in accordance with the principle of compositionality of meaning, their meaning resides in their contribution to the truth-conditions of the sentences in which they occur. In most cases this contribution consists in what they denote (refer to), hence the slogan can be extended to ‘meaning equals denotation conditions’. Of course, although this view on meaning was the prevailing one for almost a century, many of the people who initiated the enterprise of logical semantics, including people like Frege and Wittgenstein, had an open eye for all that it did not catch. However, the logical means which Frege, Wittgenstein, Russell, and the generation that succeeded them, had at their disposal were those of classical mathematical logic and set-theory, and these indeed are not very suited for an analysis of other aspects of meaning than those which the slogan covers. A real change in view then had to await the emergence of other concepts, which in due course became available mainly under the influence of developments in computer science and cognate disciplines such as artificial intelligence. And this is one of the reasons why it took almost a century before any serious and successful challenge of the view that meaning equals truthconditions from within logical semantics could emerge. The static view on meaning was, of course, already challenged from the outside, but in most cases such attacks started from premises which are quite alien to the logical semantics enterprise as such, and hence failed to bring about any radical changes. Abstract:This study examines Chinese modal verbs in the Civil Laws of the People's Republic of China (hereafter P. R. C.) promulgated by the National People's Congress and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Modal verbs are one of the distinctive features in legislation. Modal verbs function in legislation and shape the nature of social practices and actions where they are embedded. In this study, first, a corpus containing the legislative texts is created; second, frequency and concordance of modal verbs in legal texts are examined and analyzed semantically; third, collocations of the modal verbs are visited. Successively, the results are integrated into the findings in the semantic exploration, and the discussion is grounded on a sociosemiotic perspective.

Abstract:There is close relation between aspect and modality, with which co-occurrence restriction exists between the durative aspect mark Zhe(着) and the modality elements in Modern Chinese. The different Zhe(着) co-occurs with the elements expressing the different type of modality, that is, the static one with the components conveying the epistemic modality and the dynamic one with the ones indicating the root modality. The modality is determined by the differentiation of Zhe(着), and the Zhe(着) can be differentiated by the distinctness of the modality. Abstract:Abstract In legislative texts, deontic modality helps define rights, privileges, obligations, and responsibilities. Based on a corpus of Chinese civil laws from 1949 to 2015, the study investigates the development of deontic modality in Chinese civil legislative discourse and examines the variations of deontic modality diachronically from a quantitative, functional perspective, thereby shedding lights on variations of legal text. This study shows that patterns of deontic modality manifest different features in different stages. The changes of linguistic forms of deontic modality show evidence of the adaptive feature in legal language. From a quantitative perspective, the study suggests that a corpus-driven approach helps examine the development and evolution of deontic modality diachronically. It also contributes to an understanding of deontic modality mechanisms by providing both empirical evidence and theoretical insights.

Abstract:This article aims to connect issues in the epistemology of modality with issues in the philosophy of music, exploring how modalizing takes place in the context of musical performance. On the basis of studies of jazz improvisation and of classical music, it is shown that considerations about what is sonically, musically, and agentively possible play an important role for performers in the Western tonal tradition. We give a more systematic sketch of how a modal epistemology for musical performance could be constructed. We argue that it is necessary to adopt a pluralist approach toward the modal epistemology of music.

Abstract:Modal dependence logics are modal logics defined on the basis of team semantics and have the downward closure property. In this paper, we introduce sound and complete deduction systems for the major modal dependence logics, especially those with intuitionistic connectives in their languages. We also establish a concrete connection between team semantics and single-world semantics, and show that modal dependence logics can be interpreted as variants of intuitionistic modal logics.

Abstract:Linguistic modality is one of the most complex categories, that is why its nature, meanings and ways of expression often become the object of various, at times, controversial theories. The present article described the concept of modality in the context of linguistic research. The purpose of this study was to identify the means of expressing author's modality in Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Russian, determine their relations in intra- and inter-system contexts, and specify the significance of modality for typological studies of these languages. The comparative typological method was mainly used, along with observation, description, transformational analysis, and synthesis of theoretical and practical materials. The results revealed similar and distinctive elements in constructing modal relations in Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Russian. The study suggested various forms of expressing author's modality in a literary text, including explicit means such as modal words, particles, moods and interjections, and implicit means like images, themes, ideas, concepts, symbols, and punctuation. In conclusion, the identification of multi-level means of expressing author's modality in these languages contributed to deepening knowledge on the linguistic category of modality, comparative language study, and translation theory.

Abstract:Modality is one of the important components of grammar in linguistics. It lets speaker to express attitude towards, or give assessment or potentiality of state of affairs. It implies different senses and thus has different perceptions as per the context. This paper presents an account showing the gap in the functionality of the current state of art Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems. The contextual nature of linguistic modality is studied. In this paper, the works and logical approaches employed by Natural Language Processing systems dealing with modality are reviewed. It sees human cognition and intelligence as multi-layered approach that can be implemented by intelligent systems for learning.
