Abstract:Lithium bonds are analogous to hydrogen bonds and are therefore expected to exhibit similar characteristics and functions. Additionally, the metallic nature and large atomic radius of Li bestow the Li bond with special features. As one of the most important applications of the element, Li batteries afford emerging opportunities for the exploration of Li bond chemistry. Herein, the historical development and concept of the Li bond are reviewed, in addition to the application of Li bonds in Li batteries. In this way, a comprehensive understanding of the Li bond in Li batteries and an outlook on its future developments is presented.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) chemistry has been a significant branch of modern chemistry due to its wide and critical applications, such as Li batteries. Similar to the hydrogen (H) bond, the Li bond is the central topic of Li chemistry, but its nature is far from clear. Herein, the fundamental chemistry of the Li bond is systematically investigated, taking Li battery electrolytes as an example. Specifically, the Li bond and Li ionic bond can be differentiated according to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy as 7Li chemical shifts exhibit a downfield and upfield shift, respectively. The downfield shift indicates an electron localization effect of the Li bond beyond electrostatic interactions, which mainly dominate the ionic bond. Bond and electronic structure analyses further verify the difference between these two bonds. This work establishes principles to identify the Li bond and Li ionic bond, which contribute to Li chemistry and related applications, such as Li batteries.

Abstract:The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is a promising high‐energy‐density storage system. The strong anchoring of intermediates is widely accepted to retard the shuttle of polysulfides in a working battery. However, the understanding of the intrinsic chemistry is still deficient. Inspired by the concept of hydrogen bond, herein we focus on the Li bond chemistry in Li–S batteries through sophisticated quantum chemical calculations, in combination with 7 Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Identified as Li bond, the strong dipole–dipole interaction between Li polysulfides and Li–S cathode materials originates from the electron‐rich donors (e.g., pyridinic nitrogen (pN)), and is enhanced by the inductive and conjugative effect of scaffold materials with π‐electrons (e.g., graphene). The chemical shift of Li polysulfides in 7 Li NMR spectroscopy, being both theoretically predicted and experimentally verified, is suggested to serve as a quantitative descriptor of Li bond strength. These theoretical insights were further proved by actual electrochemical tests. This work highlights the importance of Li bond chemistry in Li–S cell and provides a deep comprehension, which is helpful to the cathode materials rational design and practical applications of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMB) have high energy densities and are crucial for clean energy solutions. The characterization of the lithium metal interphase is fundamentally and practically important but technically challenging. Taking advantage of synchrotron X-ray, which has the unique capability of analyzing crystalline/amorphous phases quantitatively with statistical significance, we study the composition and dynamics of the LMB interphase for a newly developed important LMB electrolyte that is based on fluorinated ether. Pair distribution function analysis revealed the sequential roles of the anion and solvent in interphase formation during cycling. The relative ratio between Li2O and LiF first increases and then decreases during cycling, suggesting suppressed Li2O formation in both initial and long extended cycles. Theoretical studies revealed that in initial cycles, this is due to the energy barriers in many-electron transfer. In long extended cycles, the anion decomposition product Li2O encourages solvent decomposition by facilitating solvent adsorption on Li2O which is followed by concurrent depletion of both. This work highlights the important role of Li2O in transitioning from an anion-derived interphase to a solvent-derived one.

Abstract:We propose a novel binary electrolyte of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide/1,3-dioxolane, that exhibits excellent performance for the suppression of lithium-dendrite growth and stability against lithium metal. With 2.5M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide in 1,3-dioxolane, long short-circuit onset-times of 72.3 and >190h are observed in Li/Li cells polarized at galvanostatic current densities of 1.0 and 0.5mAcm−2, respectively. The coulombic efficiencies for the repeated Li plating/stripping in the 2.5M electrolyte at 1.0 and 0.5mAcm−2 are as high as 99.0% and 99.5%, respectively. The electrolyte structure is changed with an increase in the concentration speculated from Raman spectra, which enables the reactivity toward lithium metal to be lowered.

Abstract:[100](Pnma) is believed to be a tough diffusion direction for Li+ in LiFePO4, leading to the belief that the rate performance of [100]-oriented LiFePO4 is poor. Recent work revealed that reducing the dimension of the LiFePO4 phase to 12 nm in the [100] direction increased the extent of Li solid solution between LiFePO4 and FePO4, which produced an increase in the active population and excellent rate performance, but the lithiation/delithiation mechanism for this interesting phenomenon remains to be unraveled. Here we report, by using operando X-ray diffraction, the phase transition path involved in the lithiation/delithiation process is single-phase featured. This work presents one of the first experimental demonstrations that decreasing the dimension of LiFePO4 in the [100] direction to the LiFePO4/FePO4 equilibrium phase boundary width can improve the solid solubility of both the end solid solutions (Li alpha FePO4 and Li1-beta FePO4) and decrease the miscibility gap of LiFePO4, demonstrating a highly orientation-dependent lithium miscibility gap.

Abstract:The strategic formulation of a compatible electrolyte plays a pivotal role in extending the longevity of lithium‐metal batteries (LMBs). Here, we present findings on a partially fluorinated electrolyte distinguished by a subdued solvation affinity towards Li+ ions and a concentrated anion presence within the primary solvation layer. This distinctive solvation arrangement redirects the focal points of reactions from solvent molecules to anions, facilitating the predominant involvement of anions in the creation of a LiF‐enriched solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI). Electrochemical assessments showcase effective Li+ transport kinetics, diminished overpotential polarization for Li nucleation, and prolonged cycling durability in Li||Li cells employing the partially fluorinated electrolyte. When tested in Li||NCM811 cells, the designed electrolyte delivers a capacity retention of 89.30% and exhibits a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.80% over 100 cycles with a charge‐potential cut‐off of 4.6 V vs. Li/Li+ under the current density of 0.4 C. Furthermore, even at a current density of 1C, the cells maintain 81.90% capacity retention and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.40% after 180 cycles. This work underscores the significance of weak‐solvation interaction in partially fluorinated electrolytes and highlights the crucial role of solvent structure in enabling the long‐term stability and high‐energy density of LMBs.

Abstract:The electrolytes for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are plagued by a low Li+ transference number (T+) of conventional lithium salts and inability to form a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, we synthesized a self-folded lithium salt, lithium 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethanesulfonyl(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiETFSI), and comparatively studied with its structure analogue, lithium 1,1,1-trifluoro-N-[2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)]ethyl]methanesulfonamide (LiFEA). The special anion chemistry imparts the following new characteristics: i) In both LiFEA and LiETFSI, the ethylene oxide moiety efficiently captures Li+, resulting in a self-folded structure and high T+ around 0.8. ii) For LiFEA, a Li-N bond (2.069 Å) is revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicating that the FEA anion possesses a high donor number (DN) and thus the intensive interphase "self-cleaning" function for an ultra-thin and compact SEI. iii) Starting from LiFEA, an electron-withdrawing sulfone group is introduced near the N atom. The distance of Li-N is tuned from 2.069 Å in LiFEA to 4.367 Å in LiETFSI. This alteration enhances ionic separation, achieves a more balanced DN, and tunes the self-cleaning intensity for a reinforced SEI. Consequently, the fast charging/discharging capability of LMBs is progressively improved. This rationally tuned anion chemistry reshapes the interactions among Li+, anions, and solvents, presenting new prospects for advanced LMBs.

Abstract:We report the optical and electroluminescent properties of the lithium complex of (2,3-dimethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline) lithium (LiMMq), exhibiting intense photoluminescence (PL), peaked at about 458 nm. As the result of electron-donating methyl groups in 8-hydroxyquinoline, the PL spectrum is blue-shifted relative to (8-hydroxyquinoline) lithium (Liq). The double-layer electroluminescent devices with a novel polymer poly(N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(4-methylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine-1,3-diisopropenylbenzene) as hole transporting layer and the LiMMq as emitting layer, sandwiched between cathode of Mg : Ag alloy and anode of indium-tin oxide, were fabricated, and the bright blue electroluminescence with luminance of more than 8000 cd m-2 was obtained. The properties indicate that the LiMMq is a potential blue emitting material for the application in light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:The electronic structure change during the reversible Li-ion storage reaction in a bimetallic MnFe-Prussian blue analogue (Li(x)K(0.14)Mn(1.43)[Fe(CN)(6)] center dot 6H(2)O) was investigated by soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Mn L(2,3)-edgespectra revealed the unchanged Mn(2+) high-spin state regardless of Li-ion concentration (x). On the other hand, the Fe L(2,3)-edge spectra clearly revealed a reversible redox behavior as Fe(3+) <-> Fe(2+) states with Li-ion insertion/extraction. Experimental findings suggested strong metal-to-ligand charge transfer in conjunction with the ligand-to-metal one. The resulting charge delocalization between the Fe and CN is considered to contribute to the high reversibility of the Li-ion storage process.

Abstract:Charge-shift (CS) bonding is a new bonding paradigm in the field of chemical bonds. Our recent study has revealed that certain Cu/Ag/Au-bonds display both CS bonding and ω-bonding characters. In this investigation, we extend our study to halogen bonding. Our focus is on scrutinizing the CS bonding in halogen-bonded BXY (B is a small Lewis base H2O or NH3; X and Y are halogen atoms) complexes by using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, natural resonance theory (NRT), and atoms in molecules (AIM) methods. The primary objective is to establish a connection between halogen bonding (B–X) in BXY and CS bonding in free XY (di-halogens). The calculations indicate that the studied BXY can be classified into two types. One type with a weak halogen bond shows closed-shell interaction. The other type with a stronger B–X interaction exhibits both CS bonding and ω-bonding characters (as seen in NH3ClF, NH3BrF, and NH3IF). Another interesting finding is a novel propensity that the CS bonding in free XY tends to carry over the halogen bonding in BXY, and the same propensity is found in Cu/Ag/Au ω-bonded species. The present study may offer an approach to probe CS bonding in many more 3c/4e ω-bonded molecules.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have proven themselves to be indispensable among modern day society. Demands stemming from consumer electronics and renewable energy systems have pushed researchers to strive for new electrochemical technologies. To this end, the advent of anionic redox, that is, the sequential or simultaneous redox of the cation and anion in a transition metal oxide based cathode for a Li-ion battery, has garnered much attention due to the enhanced specific capacities. Unfortunately, the higher energy densities are plagued with problems associated with the irreversibility of anionic redox. Much effort has been placed on finding a suitable composition of transition metal oxide, with some groups identifying the underlying features and relationship for anion redox and cationic redox to occur reversibly. Accordingly, it is timely to review anionic redox in terms of what anionic redox is with emphasis on the mechanism and the evidence underlying its discovery and validation. To follow will be a section defining the nature of the transition metal and oxygen bond accompanied by three subsequent sections bridging the redox spectrum from pure anionic, to a mix of cationic and anionic and pure cationic.
Superconducting, Plastic, and Superionic States Driven by Four-Membered Lithium Rings in a High-Pressure Lithium-Lead Compound

Abstract:Using a combination of crystal structure search methods, first-principles calculations, and machine learning potential based simulations, we explored the lithium-lead system and predicted five phases: I4/mcm LiPb2, Pnma LiPb, I4/mmm Li4Pb, C2/m Li5Pb, and Cmcm Li6Pb. Among them, I4/mmm Li4Pb displayed remarkable properties, including superconductivity, plasticity, and superionic behavior at varying temperature ranges. At lower temperatures, I4/mmm Li4Pb manifests superconductivity with a critical transition temperature of 4-5 K. Its superconducting behavior is attributed to the interplay between the B2g vibration mode, which signifies the rotational motion of four-membered lithium rings within the stacking layer, and the participation of p-orbital electrons. As temperature rises, I4/mmm Li4Pb first transitions into a plastic phase, marked by continuous collective rotation of intralayer four-membered lithium rings, and then shows superionic behavior characterized by the emergence of interlayer lithium atom diffusion. These unique behaviors stem from stronger Li-Li bonds within four-membered lithium rings and a lower energy barrier for collective motion, distinct from interstitial localized electrons in electrides found in other lithium-based systems. This work provides an intriguing platform for exploring distinct states and establishes a correlation between various physical phenomena and the system's structure and bonding.
Flexo-diffusion effect: the strong influence on lithium diffusion induced by strain gradient

Abstract:Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) work under sophisticated external force field and its electrochemical properties could be modulated by strain. Owing to the electro-mechanical coupling, the change of micro-local-structures can greatly affect lithium (Li) diffusion rate in solid state electrolytes and electrode materials of LIBs. In this study, we find that strain gradient in bilayer graphene (BLG) significantly affects Li diffusion barrier, which is termed as the flexo-diffusion effect, through first-principles calculations. The Li diffusion barrier substantially decreases/increases under the positive/negative strain gradient, leading to the change of Li diffusion coefficient in several orders of magnitude at 300 K. Interestingly, the regulation effect of strain gradient is much more significant than that of uniform strain field, which can have a remarkable effect on the rate performance of batteries, with a considerable increase in the ionic conductivity and a slight change of the original material structure. Moreover, our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) show that the asymmetric distorted lattice structure provides a driving force for Li diffusion, resulting in oriented diffusion along the positive strain gradient direction. These findings could extend present LIBs technologies by introducing the novel strain gradient engineering.

Impact of Electron-Withdrawing Groups on Ion Transport and Structure in Lithium Borate Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Among the distinctive structural features of lithium ionic liquids (LILs), a novel class of single-component electrolytes, the variation of the electron-withdrawing group stands out as a key factor in determining their dynamics. To understand this phenomenon, we conducted molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for LILs based on hexafluoro-2-propanoxy (LIL2), hexafluoro-2-methyl-2-propanoxy (LIL4), and trifluoro-2-propanoxy (LIL6) derivatives. Results revealed that correlated ion dynamics govern the general transport characteristics in LILs, while the electron-withdrawing group regulates the Li transport mechanism. Upon saturation by fluorine atoms, LILs exhibit higher inhomogeneity in their transport and structure properties. Strong coordination along the ethoxide group promotes jumps of Li across positive domains, while in fluorine-poor LILs, stronger coordination in proximity to boron atoms carries the anion along Li transport. Understanding the results of MD simulation will aid the further design and widespread use of this class of electrolytes in production of the energy storage and conversion devices
