Abstract:For blue-shifted hydrogen-bonded systems, the hydrogen stretching frequency increases rather than decreases on complexation. In computations at various levels of theory, the blue-shift in the archetypical system, F3C-H...FH, is reproduced at the Hartree-Fock level, indicating that electron correlation is not the primary cause. Calculations also demonstrate that a blue-shift does not require either a carbon center or the absence of a lone pair on the proton donor, because F3Si-H...OH2, F2NH...FH, F2PH...NH3, and F2PH...OH2 have substantial blue-shifts. Orbital interactions are shown to lengthen the X-H bond and lower its vibrational frequency, and thus cannot be the source of the blue-shift. In the F3CH...FH system, the charge redistribution in F3CH can be reproduced very well by replacing the FH with a simple dipole, which suggests that the interactions are predominantly electrostatic. When modeled with a point charge for the proton acceptor, attractive electrostatic interactions elongate the F3C-H, while repulsive interactions shorten it. At the equilibrium geometry of a hydrogen-bonded complex, the electrostatic attraction between the dipole moments of the proton donor and proton acceptor must be balanced by the Pauli repulsion between the two fragments. In the absence of orbital interactions that cause bond elongation, this repulsive interaction leads to compression of the X-H bond and a blue-shift in its vibrational frequency.

Abstract:The physical origin of blue-shifting hydrogen bonds remains a subject of debate, although many plausible explanations have been proposed. Using a molecular property decomposition analysis based on absolutely localized molecular orbitals, we investigated several representative F3CH···Y (Y = H2O, NH3, Cl-) complexes. We reveal that features of a blue-shifting H-bond already appear on the frozen surface where both polarization and charge transfer (CT) are "turned off", and that the final frequency shift observed depends on the strength of CT. Further decomposition of forces at the frozen level shows that Pauli repulsion is the only component that shortens the C-H bond in the short-range, while both permanent electrostatics and dispersion lengthen the bond. The effects of these forces from the medium to long-range are also discussed. Our analysis provides a complete picture for blue-shifting H-bonds and suggests two necessary conditions for their features to be observed at equilibrium structures: (i) stronger Pauli repulsion than the combination of electrostatic and dispersion forces; (ii) relatively weak CT that is insufficient to compensate for the blue-shifting effect of the frozen interaction.
On the Correlation Between the Blue Shift of Hydrogen Bonding and the Proton Donor-Proton Acceptor Distance

Abstract:It is demonstrated that in all types of hydrogen bonds (X-H…Y) there is a balance between the long-range attractive orbital interactions and short-range Pauli/nucleus repulsions. When the proton acceptor approaches the proton donor from distance, the hydrogen bonding energy becomes more negative at relatively large distance, goes through a minimum, and then starts to become less negative when the short-range repulsive forces come into effect.Meanwhile, the X-H bond length increases at relatively large distances, goes through a maximum and starts to shorten when the short-range repulsive forces come into effect. Whether the hydrogen bond is red or blue shifted is dictated by the energy minimum position. If at the energy minimum position the X-H bond length is shorter than that for the free monomer, the hydrogen bond is blue shifted and vice versa. Further studies demonstrate that the recent report about the correlation of C-H bond lengths with proton donor-acceptor distance in F3C-H…OH2 and F3C-H…Cl- is not fully correct because the authors conducted an inappropriate comparison. Furthermore, it is shown for the first time that the Pauli/nucleus repulsion theory is applicable to the blue-shifted hydrogen bonds in the X-H…π complexes and the blue-shifted lithium bonds in the X-Li…Y complexes.

Existing Problems in Theoretical Determination of Red-Shifted or Blue-Shifted Hydrogen Bond

Abstract:Both Hobza (Int. J. Quantum Chem., 90 (2002) 1071) and Li et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 124 (2002) 9639) have predicted a blue-shifted or improper N–H⋯F hydrogen bond existing in the F2N–H⋯FH complex with the method of Hartree–Fock calculation followed by Møller–Plesset correlation energy correction truncated at second order (MP2/6-31G** and MP2/6-311+G**, respectively). Unexpectedly, our density functional calculation (B3LYP) has predicted a red-shifted or normal N–H⋯F hydrogen bond in this complex whether the counterpoise-corrected gradient optimization and frequency calculation is applied or not. Changing the basis set from 6-311+G(d,p) to 6-311++G(3df,3pd) does not change the red-shifted hydrogen bond prediction. Experimental identification should be provided for evaluating relative performance of these two theoretical methods in predicting correct hydrogen bond stretching vibration frequency shift upon complex formation. X–H bond length change and its vibrational frequency change do not necessarily have monotonic corresponding relationship, i.e. blue-shift does not necessarily mean X–H bond length contraction, and vice versa. Much more attention or consideration should be paid in theoretical hydrogen bond type prediction such as red-shifted or blue-shifted.

Abstract:MP2/6-31 + g(d) calculations were performed verifying the existences of blue-shifting X - C ≡ C - CF2 - H⋯OH2 hydrogen bonds. Detailed analyses revealed that the interaction energy and donor-acceptor distance had good correlations with the substituent Hammett constants. However, the extent of C-H bond contraction and the blue shift of the C-H stretching vibration did not show any good correlation with the traditional substituent constants, indicating that certain more complicated mechanisms might be involved in the present systems. Nevertheless, it was found that highly electron-withdrawing susbtituents were not favorable to the C-H bond contraction, and it was suggested that the attractive interaction between water and the carbon of - CF2H probably played an important role in the blue shift.

Abstract:The Front Cover illustrates the phenomenon of the blueshift in trifurcated hydrogen bonds that occurs in X–•••H3C–Y complexes, that is, the compression instead of expansion of the H–C bonds and the rise in the vibrational frequency of their stretching mode. The Lewis base X– tetrel‐binds to the central C through a HOMO–LUMO interaction with the s*C–Y. In doing so, X– sterically clashes with the H atoms and pushes them towards C; hence, the compression and blueshift of the C–H bonds. Abstract:For the blue-shifted hydrogen bonds between CF3H and phenols, fluorobenzenes, and anilines, a donor para-substituent increases the interaction energy causing larger blue shift. For the red-shifted hydrogen bond between CF3H and phenolate, a donor para-substituent also increases the interaction energy but causing larger red shift. These behaviors indicate that the blue shift is attributable to the attraction between the positively charged carbon of CF3H and the hydrogen bond acceptor. This attraction forces the hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor to come so close to each other that the hydrogen of CF3H feels considerable Pauli repulsion from the acceptor, resulting in CH contraction.

Abstract:Classical constitutive law between the structure and spectra has long been established in most physical processes and behaviors. Despite the emerging consensus, whether this law applies to microscopic systems adhering to quantum mechanics remains a fundamental and open question, due to limitations in even the most state-of-the-art experimental techniques. Here, we report an anomalous constitutive law of hydrogen bonds (X-H···Y) using a benchmark ab initio method. Notably, a donor X-H bond shortening occurred simultaneously with an unexpected redshift and enhanced intensity in IR spectra. The reason for donor X-H bond shortening is attributed to both the slowly increasing attractive force from the acceptor Y atom and the increasing short-range repulsive forces from other protons attached to the approaching acceptor Y atom. Furthermore, neither eliminating vibrational mixing nor introducing various physical effects make vibrational spectra respond to X-H bond shortening. Other structural-characterization NMR spectra provide robust evidence for this anomalous law. This anomalous law is ascribed to the interplay of electronic correlations. Our Letter thus inspires a reassessment of paradigms, which broadens the scope of microscopic behavior for finer control.

Abstract:The blue shifting of vibrational frequencies in hydrogen bonded molecules, as observed in aqueous environments, has been attributed to local partial charge transfer from solvation. Here, we extrapolate the blue shift model to the stronger ionic interactions between hydrogen bond acceptors associated with protonation through augmented pH levels and competitive interactions with counter ion pairing. The chemical model we utilize in this work is the aqueous pyridine‐pyridinium equilibrium to characterize the blue shifts observed in the pyridinium chloride ionic system. The observed agreement between observed experimental and calculated spectral shifts shows that the blue shifting model can be extrapolated to stronger interactions and accurately describe the nature of the hydrogen bond.

Hydrogen bond blueshifts in nitrile vibrational spectra are dictated by hydrogen bond geometry and dynamics

Abstract:Vibrational Stark effect (VSE) spectroscopy has become one of the most important experimental approaches to determine the strength of noncovalent, electrostatic interactions in chemistry and biology and to quantify their influence on structure and reactivity. Nitriles (C≡N) have been widely used as VSE probes, but their application has been complicated by an anomalous hydrogen bond (HB) blueshift which is not encompassed within the VSE framework. We present an empirical model describing the anomalous HB blueshift in terms of H-bonding geometry, i.e. as a function of HB distance and angle with respect to the C≡N group. This model is obtained by comparing vibrational observables from density functional theory and electrostatics from the polarizable AMOEBA force field, and it provides a physical explanation for the HB blueshift in terms of underlying multipolar and Pauli repulsion contributions. Additionally, we compare predicted blueshifts with experimental results and find our model provides a useful, direct framework to analyze HB geometry for rigid HBs, such as within proteins or chemical frameworks. In contrast, nitriles in highly dynamic H-bonding environments like protic solvents are no longer a function solely of geometry; this is a consequence of motional narrowing, which we demonstrate by simulating IR spectra. Overall, when HB geometry and dynamics are accounted for, an excellent correlation is found between observed and predicted HB blueshifts. This correlation includes different types of nitriles and HB donors, suggesting that our model is general and can aid in understanding HB blueshifts wherever nitriles can be implemented.

Energetic origins of the hydrogen-bond redshift: IQA partitioning of normal modes force constants

Abstract:The redshift of the D−H (where D represents the H donor group containing = F, O, N) bond stretch normal coordinate is notable evidence of a hydrogen-bonded system. Upon the formation of the hydrogen bond, electronic density is transferred from the acceptor moiety of the complex to the hydrogen atom donor, causing an elongation of the D−H bond and a reduction of the force constant. Within the orbital paradigm of chemistry, the redshift of the D−H stretch frequency is caused by the donation of electrons from the base lone pair to the anti-bonding, σ∗, orbital of the D−H bond. The increased electronic population of the anti-bonding orbital is, therefore, responsible for the decrease in the force constant and, consequently, for the redshift. In this work, we present a description of the H-bond redshift in terms of the electronic density, substituting the molecular orbital theory interpretation by the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules with the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) energy decomposition scheme. The results herein suggest that the energetic origin of the redshift depends on the acid structure. When H2O acts as a H donor, the redshift is mostly determined by the Intratomic and exchange-correlation, whereas the redshift of the HF stretch is caused primarily by the Coulomb contribution. The H acceptor molecule modulates 1 the amount of variation in the above-mentioned cases. The better the acceptor the greater the variation in the IQA contributions to the force constant.

Abstract:The nitrile (C≡N) stretching vibration is widely used as a site-specific environmental probe of proteins and, as such, many computational studies have been used to investigate the factors that affect its frequency (νCN). These studies, most of which were carried out in the ground electronic state of the molecule of interest, revealed that the formation of a normal or linear hydrogen bond (H-bond) with the nitrile group results in a blueshift in its νCN. Recently, however, several experimental studies showed that for certain aromatic nitriles, solvent relaxations in their excited electronic state(s) induce a redshift (blueshift) in νCN in protic (aprotic) solvents, suggesting that the effect of hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions on νCN may depend on the electronic state of the molecule. To test this possibility, herein we combine molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanical calculations to assess the effect of H-bonding interactions on the νCN of 5-cyanoindole (5-CNI) in its different electronic states. We find that its C≡N group can form either one H-bond (single-H-bond) or two H-bonds (d-H-bonds) with the solvent molecules and that in the ground electronic state, a single-H-bond can lead νCN to shift either to a higher or lower frequency, depending on its angle, which is consistent with previous studies, whereas the d-H-bonds cause νCN to redshift. However, in its lowest-lying excited electronic state (i.e., S1), which has the characteristics of a charge-transfer state, all H-bonds induce a redshift in νCN, with the d-H-bonds being most effective in this regard.

The Extended Hydrogen Bond: A Coupling Pair of Flexible and Polarizable Dipoles

Abstract:Being essential to life on earth, the hydrogen bond and its configuration, performance, and functionality become increasingly inspiring. We humbly share a three-body coupling X:R-Y system involving a pair of retractable and polarizable Z-X and R-Y dipoles. The (:) is the negative polar end of a dipole. The X:R-Y bond covers at least four situations, meets the unique criterion of force combination, and possesses at least five characteristics. Specifically, the lone-pair-engaged N/O:H-O/N/C bonds feature properly the performances of H2O and CHNO molecular assemblies; the dipolar MP or atomic vacancy V0 replaced MP:R-Y bonds could coordinate molecular physisorption for catalysis and hydrogen storage; and the polarity-inverted M^+-O_2-:M^P formed during chemisorption drives the oxidation bonding and electronic dynamics. The combination of X:R attraction and X:Y repulsion is decisive to the performance of the X:R-Y system that follows the hydrogen bond cooperability and polarizability (HBCP) regulation in the segmental length, energy, and specific heat [Sun et al, Phys Rep 2023; 998:1-68]. The X:R-Y exhibits extraordinary adaptivity, recoverability, sensitivity, catalytic capability, and chemical reactivity. A perturbation such as mechanical compression, thermal loading, electronic polarization, or molecular undercoordination changes the X—Y distance by lengthening one segment and shortening the other. The HBCP premise has substantiated the understanding of water ice anomalies, molecular hydration interfaces, CHNO energetic assemblies, and oxygen chemisorption, inspiring promising ways of thinking about single-atom catalysis and low-dimensional high-TC superconductivity. Further extension of this amplification to other areas such as biological science and cell engineering would be even more fascinating and promising.

"Hydridic Hydrogen-Bond Donors" Are Not Hydrogen-Bond Donors

Abstract:Herein, we dismiss a recent proposal by Civiš, Hobza, and co-workers to modify the IUPAC definition of hydrogen bonds in order to expand the scope from protonic Y-Hδ+ to hydridic Y-Hδ- hydrogen-bond donor fragments [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2023, 145, 8550]. Based on accurate Kohn-Sham molecular orbital (KS-MO) analyses, we falsify the conclusion that interactions involving protonic and hydridic hydrogens are both hydrogen bonds; they are not. Instead, our quantitative KS-MO, energy decomposition, and Voronoi deformation density analyses reveal two fundamentally different bonding mechanisms for protonic Y-Hδ+ and hydridic Y-Hδ- fragments which go with charge transfer in opposite directions. On one hand, we confirm the IUPAC definition for regular hydrogen bonds in the case of protonic Y-Hδ+ fragments. On the other hand, complexes involving Y-Hδ- fragments are, in fact, acceptors in other well-known families of Lewis-acid/base interactions, such as halogen bonds, chalcogen bonds, and pnictogen bonds. These mechanisms lead to the same spectroscopic phenomenon in both the Y-Hδ+ and Y-Hδ- fragments, that is, the redshift in the Y-H stretching frequency, which is, thus, not an exclusive indicator for hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonds are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology. The physical forces that govern hydrogen-bonding interactions have been heavily debated, with much of the discussion focused on the relative contributions of electrostatic vs quantum mechanical effects. In principle, the vibrational Stark effect, the response of a vibrational mode to electric field, can provide an experimental method for parsing such interactions into their electrostatic and nonelectrostatic components. In a previous study we showed that, in the case of relatively weak O-H···π hydrogen bonds, the O-H bond displays a linear response to an electric field, and we exploited this response to demonstrate that the interactions are dominated by electrostatics (Saggu, M.; Levinson, N. M.; Boxer, S. G. J. Am. Chem. Soc.2011, 133, 17414-17419). Here we extend this work to other X-H···π interactions. We find that the response of the X-H vibrational probe to electric field appears to become increasingly nonlinear in the order O-H < N-H < S-H. The observed effects are consistent with differences in atomic polarizabilities of the X-H groups. Nonetheless, we find that the X-H stretching vibrations of the model compounds indole and thiophenol report quantitatively on the electric fields they experience when complexed with aromatic hydrogen-bond acceptors. These measurements can be used to estimate the electrostatic binding energies of the interactions, which are found to agree closely with the results of energy calculations. Taken together, these results highlight that with careful calibration vibrational probes can provide direct measurements of the electrostatic components of hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:Abstract The excited states of cis-trans formic acid dimer and its monomers have been investigated by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method. The formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds O1-H1...O2=C2 and C2-H2...O4=C1 induces bond length lengthening of the groups related to the hydrogen bond, while that of the C2-H2 group is shortened. It is demonstrated that the red-shift hydrogen bond O1-H1...O2=C2 and blue-shift hydrogen bond C2-H2...O4=C1 are both weakened when excited to the S1 state. Moreover, it is found that the groups related to the formation of red-shift hydrogen bond O1-H1...O2=C2 are both strengthened in the S1 state, while the groups related to the blue-shift hydrogen bond C2-H2...O4=C1 are both weakened. This will provide information for the photochemistry and photophysical study of red- and blue-shift hydrogen bond.
