Abstract:A transcendental meromorphic function has a singular property in any neighborhood of its essential singular point, for example, it assumes there infinitely often all but at most two values on the extended complex plane. This property is preserved in any angular domain containing some fixed ray. Such ray is termed as the singular direction of the function considered. In this chapter, we mainly discuss T directions of meromorphic functions, which was introduced by, the author in 2003. First of all we consider the existence of T directions including T directions with small functions as targets. Next we consider connections among T directions and other directions such as Julia directions and Borel directions and mainly introduce a result of Zhang Q. D. which proves that a T (resp. Borel) direction may not be a Borel (resp. T) direction. We list conditions for the existence of singular directions dealing with derivatives of the functions, that is, the Hayman T directions and for the existence of common T directions of a function and its derivatives. We present a simple discussion of distribution of the Julia, Borel and T directions. In terms of their asymptotic form, through the Stokes rays we investigate singular directions of meromorphic solutions of a linear differential equation with rational coefficients. In the case of at least one of the coefficients being transcendental, we use the Nevanlinna's fundamental theorems for an angle to attain the aim of our researches. We conclude this chapter with a simple survey on value distribution of algebroid functions including the Nevanlinna first and second fundamental theorems for a disk and unique theorems and the singular directions.

To achieve our purpose, we establish a fundamental inequality about the Ahlfors-Shimizu characteristic for an angle and explain that the inequality is best possible in terms of the existence of Julia directions and Hayman T directions.

Abstract:In this paper we make a further discussion of a relationship between the number of fixed-points and distribution of singular values along the round annuli centered at the origin of a transcendental meromorphic function. To attain our purpose we first establish a fundamental inequality for the modulus of derivative of a holomorphic covering mapping whose image is an annulus by virtue of the hyperbolic metric. The inequality is of independent significance. We make a simple survey on some domain constants for hyperbolic domains.

We prove the second fundamental theorem for the Ahlfors-Shimizu’s characteristic in the unit disk in terms of Nevanlinna theory in the angular domains, and obtain the existence of T -points and Hayman T -points dealing with small functions as target.
Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

On a question of Gary G. Gundersen concerning meromorphic functions sharing three distinct values IM and a fourth value CM

Abstract:In 1992, Gundersen (Complex Var. Elliptic Equ.20 (1992), no. 1-4, 99-106.) proposed the following famous open question: if two non-constant meromorphic functions share three values IM and share a fourth value CM, then do the functions necessarily share all four values CM? The open question is a long-standing question in the studies of the Nevanlinna$'$s value distribution theory of meromorphic functions, and has not been completely resolved by now. In this paper, we prove that if two distinct non-constant meromorphic functions $f$ and $g$ of finite order share $0,$ $1,$ $c$ IM and $\infty$ CM, where $c$ is a finite complex value such that $c\not\in\{0,1\},$ then $f$ and $g$ share $0,$ $1,$ $c,$ $\infty$ CM. Applying the main result obtained in this paper, we completely resolve a question proposed by Gary G. Gundersen on Page 458 of his paper (J. London Math. Soc. 20(1979), no. 2, 457-466.)concerning the nonexistence of two distinct non-constant meromorphic functions sharing three distinct values DM and a fourth value CM. The obtained result also improves the corresponding result on Pages 109-117 in (E. Mues, Bemerkungen zum vier-punkte-satz, Complex Methods on Partial Diferential Equations, 109-117, Math. Res. 53, Akademie-Verlag, Berlin, 1989.) concerning the nonexistence of two distinct non-constant entire functions that share three distinct finite values DM. Examples are provided to show that the main results obtained in this paper, in a sense, are best possible.

Characteristics of A Meromorphic Function

Abstract:We characterize meromorphic functions in terms of points at which they assume some values. The purpose is realized by using their characteristics. In this chapter, we introduce the Nevanlinna's characteristic in a domain (especially in a disk centered at the origin), the Nevanlinna's characteristic in an angle and the Tsuji's characteristic in terms of the generalized Poisson formula, Carleman formula and Levin formula respectively. These formulae are derived from the second Green formula. Similarly, the introduction of the Ahlfors-Shimizu characteristic originates from the second Green formula from the point of view of analysis. We exhibit the first and second fundamental theorems for every type of characteristics and the estimates of error terms, especially that of corresponding error terms to the Nevanlinna's characteristic in an angle. The relationship among various characteristics and among the integrated counting functions are found out. These relationship make us to produce new results and applications. We compare the characteristics of meromorphic functions and their derivatives. Next in terms of the Ahlfors-Shimizu's characteristic for an angle, we make a careful discussion of value distribution of functions meromorphic in an angle, especially theorems of the Borel-type. Then we discuss deficiency and deficient values which includes an introduction to Baernstein's spread relation along with related results. Finally, we establish a series of unique theorems of meromorphic functions in an angle in terms of Tsuji's characteristic. This is a new topic.
On meromorphic solutions of Malmquist type difference equations

Abstract:Recently, the present authors used Nevanlinna theory to provide a classification for the Malmquist type difference equations of the form $f(z+1)^n=R(z,f)$ $(†)$ that have transcendental meromorphic solutions, where $R(z,f)$ is rational in both arguments. In this paper, we first complete the classification for the case $°_{f}(R(z,f))=n$ of~$(†)$ by identifying a new equation that was left out in our previous work. We will actually derive all the equations in this case based on some new observations on~$(†)$. Then, we study the relations between $(†)$ and its differential counterpart $(f')^n=R(z,f)$. We show that most autonomous equations, singled out from~$(†)$ with $n=2$, have a natural continuum limit to either the differential Riccati equation $f'=a+f^2$ or the differential equation $(f')^2=a(f^2-\tau_1^2)(f^2-\tau_2^2)$, where $a\not=0$ and $\tau_i$ are constants such that $\tau_1^2\not=\tau_2^2$. The latter second degree differential equation and the symmetric QRT map are derived from each other using the bilinear method and the continuum limit method.

Abstract:Let f(z) be a transcendental meromorphic function. The paper investigates, using the hyperbolic metric, the relation between the forward orbit P(f) of singularities of f(-1) and limit functions of iterations of f in its Fatou components. It is mainly proved, among other things, that for a wandering domain U, all the limit functions of {f(n)\(U)} lie in the derived set of P(f) and that if f(np)\ v --> q (n --> +infinity) for a Fatou component V, then either q is in the derived set of S-p(f) or f(p)(q) = q. As applications of main theorems, some sufficient conditions of the non-existence of wandering domains and Baker domains are given.
On transcendental meromorphic functions with radially distributed values

Abstract:The growth of transcendental meromorphic functions in terms of their orders is investigated in this paper when they and their derivatives have radially distributed values following the discussion of the author. A simple and elementary way to study such subjects is exhibited in this paper; that is, once an estimation of B ( r , *) in terms of a few C ( r ,**) in the Nevanlinna theory on angular domains is established, we can produce one result that the order of a mermorphic function with radially distributed values related to C ( r ,**) can be estimated under the assumption of existence of suitable deficient value. The results obtained in this paper lead us to a new singular direction in terms of Nevanlinna characterstic instead of the order of meromorphic functions.

Abstract:This paper studies solutions to a singular $SU(3)$ Toda system with linear source terms on a compact Riemann surface $\Sigma$ with smooth boundaries $\partial\Sigma$. We establish the existence of solutions when the parameters are not critical, assuming that Euler characteristic $\chi(\Sigma)<1$ via analyzing the sublevels. Furthermore, we find a sufficient condition that ensures multiple solutions for generic potentials by Morse inequalities and a transversality theorem.

Abstract:There have been many extensions of the Nevanlinna's five-values theorem for meromorphic functions to the case of meromorphic maps into Pn(C). We improve these results by considering the degenerate case and using the weaker condition ‘f−1(H)⊆g−1(H)’ instead of the usual one ‘f−1(H)=g−1(H)’ for some hyperplanes H among the given hyperplanes. Our main theorems contain not only many well-known results but also more new conclusions. The sharpness of our results in some aspects is also explained.

Abstract:Let \Fc be a holomorphic foliation by curves defined in a neighborhood of 0 in \C^2 having 0 as a hyperbolic singularity. Let T be a harmonic current directed by \Fc which does not give mass to any of the two separatrices. Then we show that the Lelong number of T at 0 vanishes. Next, we apply this local result to investigate the global mass-distribution for directed harmonic currents on singular holomorphic foliations living on compact complex surfaces. Finally, we apply this global result to study the recurrence phenomenon of a generic leaf.

Abstract:A value on the extended complex plane is a radially distributed value of a transcendental meromorphic function if most of points at which the value is assumed distribute closely along a finite number of rays from the origin. In this chapter, we study the growth order of a meromorphic function with two radially distributed values and a distinct deficient value (in other words, this hints a condition under which deficient values do not exist). We respectively treat two cases: one is without assumption about the growth of the function considered and the other is under assumption of the function being of the finite lower order. The Nevanlinna characteristic for an angle plays crucial role in the investigation of this subject. Actually, the idea to study this subject is the following: the Nevanlinna characteristic T (r, f) for {vertical bar z vertical bar < r} is controlled by the corresponding proximate function m(r,*) to a deficient value; there exists a solid relation between m(r,*) and the sum of B(r,*) on the finitely many angular domains; and according to some fundamental theorems, we estimate B(r,*) in terms of two C(r,**), which describes the number of poles of the function ** in the angle. Thus T (r, f) is controlled in terms of the number of value-points in the angles. This way also produces discussion of the growth order dealing with other type of radially distributed values. Finally, we simply survey the background and other main results of the subject.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the value distribution of holomorphic curves on an angular domain from the point of view of potential theory and establish the first and second fundamental theorems corresponding to those theorems of Ahlfors-Shimizu, Nevanlinna, and Tsuji on meromorphic functions in an angular domain, which have not been established before in other references. As applications of these theorems, we introduce the singular directions of holomorphic curves and prove their existences and investigate the growth of holomorphic curves with radially distributed hyperplanes and uniqueness of holomorphic curves in an angular domain. The obtained results are transferred to the algebroid functions.

Abstract:In this paper we study asymptotic directions in the tangent bundle of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$, namely those tangent directions that are annihilated by the second fundamental form of the Torelli map. We give examples of asymptotic directions for any $g \geq 4$. We prove that if the rank $d$ of a tangent direction $\zeta \in H^1(T_C)$ (with respect to the infinitesimal deformation map) is less than the Clifford index of the curve $C$, then $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. If the rank of $\zeta$ is equal to the Clifford index of the curve, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the infinitesimal deformation $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. Then we determine all asymptotic directions of rank 1 and we give an almost complete description of asymptotic directions of rank 2.
