Abstract:Six novel tetranortriterpenoid derivatives were isolated from the methanolic extract of the whole bodies of Munronia henryi, namely, munronins A–F (1–6). In compounds (3–6), the side chains are rare in tetranortriterpenoids. Their structures were established by extensive NMR experiments. Based on the diversity of the side chains, possible biodegradations for the side chains of compounds 1–6 from euphane or tirucallane skeleton are proposed. Munronins A–E exhibited moderate antifeeding activity against Pieris brassicae L, while munronin F showed negative activity.

Abstract:Two new 18-norschiartane-type schinortriterpenoids, namely wuwezidilactones Q (1) and R (2) were isolated from the stems of Schisandra lancifolia. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were further determined by ROESY and an empirical comparison of their experimental ECD spectra with literature.

Abstract:A new eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoid, artemihedinic acid N (1), together with four known compounds, aspterric acid (2), two naphtho-γ-pyrones, peninaphones A (3) and B (4), and a diphenyl ether (5), were isolated from the rice medium fermentations of the mangrove rhizosphere soil-derived fungus Penicillium sp. HK1-22. The structure of 1 was determined by combined spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR spectral data. The antibacterial activities of all isolated metabolites were evaluated.

Abstract:Plants of the Meliaceae family have long attracted researchers' interest due to their various insecticidal activities, with triterpenes being the main active ingredients. In this paper, we discuss 93 triterpenoids with insecticidal activity from 37 insecticidal plant species of 15 genera (Munronia, Neobeguea, Pseudocedrela, Nymania, Quivisia, Ruagea, Dysoxylum, Soymida, Lansium, Sandoricum, Walsura, Trichilia, Swietenia, Turraea, and Xylocarpus) in the family Meliaceae. Among these genera, Trichilia deserves further research, with twelve species possessing insecticidal activity. The 93 insecticidal molecules included 27 ring-seco limonoids (comprising 1 ring A-seco group chemical, 1 ring B-seco group chemical, 5 ring D-seco group chemicals, 14 rings A,B-seco group chemicals, 5 rings B,D-seco group chemicals, and 1 rings A,B,D-seco group chemical), 22 ring-intact limonoids (comprising 5 cedrelone-class chemicals, 6 trichilin-class chemicals, 7 havanensin-class chemicals, 2 azadirone-class chemicals, 1 vilasinin-class chemical, and 1 other chemical), 33 2,30-linkage chemicals (comprising 25 mexicanolide-class chemicals and 8 phragmalin-class chemicals), 3 1,n-linkage-group chemicals, 3 onoceranoid-type triterpenoids, 2 apotirucallane-type terpenoids, 2 kokosanolide-type tetranortriterpenoids, and 1 cycloartane triterpene. In particular, 59 molecules showed antifeedant activity, 30 molecules exhibited poisonous effects, and 9 molecules possessed growth regulatory activity. Particularly, khayasin, beddomei lactone, 3β,24,25-trihydroxycycloartane, humilinolides A–E and methyl-2-hydroxy-3β-isobutyroxy-1-oxomeliac-8(30)-enate showed excellent insecticidal activities, which were comparable to that of azadirachtin and thus deserved more attention. Moreover, it was noteworthy that various chemicals (such as 12α-diacetoxywalsuranolide, 11β,12α-diacetoxycedrelone, 1α,7α,12α-triacetoxy-4α-carbomethoxy-11β-hydroxy-14β,15β-epoxyhavanensin, and 11-epi-21-hydroxytoonacilide, etc.) from Turraea showed excellent insecticidal activity. Specially, the insecticidal activity of khayasin from Neobeguea against the coconut leaf beetle were similar to that of rotenone. Therefore, it was a promising candidate insecticide for the control of the coconut leaf beetle.

Abstract:One new tirucallane-type nortriterpenoid Nortirucallane A (1), together with Chrysoeriol (2) and Isorhamnetin (3), was isolated from the methylene chloride part of Lonicerae japonicae flos. Their structures were elucidated by the detailed analysis of comprehensive spectroscopic data. Compound 3 was isolated from the genus of Lonicera for the first time. The significance of 1 for the study of phytochemical taxonomy was discussed.

Abstract:A new ursane-type triterpenoid, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-Z-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12- en-28-oic-acid (1), together with three known triterpenoids, 3 beta-hydroxy-urs-30-p-E-hydroxycinnamoyloxy-12-en-28-oic-acid (2), 2 alpha, 3 beta, 19 alpha-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic-acid (3), and ursolic acid (4), four known lignans, pinoresinol (5), 9 alpha-hydroxypinoresinol (6), (+)-medioresinol (7), and (+)-kobusin (8), and two steroids, beta-sitosterol (9), and daucosterol (10), were isolated from the whole parts of Teucrium viscidum. Their structures were established by a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, besides comparison with literature data. Compounds 1-4 were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11 beta-HSD1).

Abstract:Seven undescribed tirucallane-type triterpenoids, kumunorquassins A‒E and kumuquassins K and L, along with nine known analogues, have been isolated from the leaves of Picrasma quassioides (D. Don) Benn. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated based on comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The absolute configuration of cornusalterin J was unequivocally determined by X-ray diffraction based on its p-bromobenzoate derivative. A brief approach was presented in our study, which could rapidly and conveniently determine the relative and absolute configurations of OCH<sub>3</sub>-23 of kumuquassin L and cornusalterins J, H and G depending on the chemical shift differences (Δδ) of C-24 and C-25 and the chemical shifts of C-23, H-23 and H-24. In addition, the cytotoxicities of these compounds against two human tumour cell lines (HepG2 and Hep3B) were evaluated.

Abstract:Toosendanone A (1), a new euphane (tirucallane)-type triterpene bearing a five-membered ring in the side chain and the first cyclopentanyl protolimonoid, was isolated from the bark of Melia toosendan, along with two new tirucallanes, toosendanic acids A (2) and B (3). The structure and absolute configuration of compound 1 was elucidated by spectroscopic data interpretation and X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1-3 were evaluated for cytotoxicity against a small panel of cancer cell lines.

Abstract:Chiratone (1), a rare new chiratane type triterpenoid, together with five known triterpenoids were isolated from the rhizomes of Drynaria fortunei (Kunze) J. Sm. The structure was characterized as 20β-hydroxychiratan-22-one on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR, and MS spectroscopic analyses, and was further confirmed by X-ray crystal diffraction. Primary bioassays showed that compound 1 had significant cytotoxic activity against Hela, PC3 and HepG2 cells, with IC(50) of 2.92 μM, 1.08 μM and 2.45 μM, respectively.

Abstract:AIM: To study the alkaloids from the roots of Aconitum sinomontanum of Ranunculaceae. METHODS: The alkaloids were isolated using silica gel chromatography (column and chromatodron), and the structures were elucidated on the basis of IR, MS, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, 1H-1H COSY, HMQC and HMBC analysis. RESULTS: Twenty seven compounds have been isolated from the total alkaloids, two of which are sinomontanines D (1) and E (2). CONCLUSION: Sinomontanines D (1) and E (2) are new bisnorditerpenoid alkaloids.

Their structures were mainly determined by mass spectrometric and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods. Compound 5 and 6 showed cytotoxic activities towards the A549 non-small-cell lung cancer cell line (IC50 = 8.43 and 6.06 mu m), and the methanol extract inhibited the activity of cathepsin B with an IC50 value of 0.77 mu g mL(-1).

Abstract:Two previously undescribed monoterpenoid quinoline alkaloids, namely melotenucadines A and B, together with four known analogs, were characterized from the stems and leaves of Melodinus tenuicaudatus. The structures of the new compounds were established by extensive MS and NMR spectroscopic methods, while the absolute configuration was conducted by ECD calculations. Melotenucadine B was found to show certain cytotoxicity to MCF‐7 cell (IC50=27.3 μM).

Abstract:Three new limonoids (toonaciliatins N-P, 1-3) and four new pimaradiene-type diterpenoids (toonacilidins A-D, 4-7) were isolated from the leaves and twigs of Toona ciliata Roem. var. yunnanensis. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. Toonacilidin B (5) showed moderate inhibitory activity against H. pylori-SS1 with an MIC of 50 mu g/mL.

Abstract:Three new diterpenoid alkaloids ( 1 , 2 , 3 ) and seventeen known ( 4–20 ) compounds were isolated from the whole plant of Delphinium sherriffii Munz (Ranunculaceae). Their structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic analyses, including IR, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. All compounds were evaluated for the inhibitory activity of Sf9 cells and compound 5 exhibited the strongest cytotoxicity (IC 50 = 8.97 μM) against Sf9 cell line.
