Abstract:An (n,m)-graph is referred to be a graph with n vertices and m edges. Let Δ(G) and δ(G) be the maximum and minimum degree of a graph G and let μ(G) and q(G) be the Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectral radius of G, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for two connected nonregular (n,m)-graphs G and G′, if Δ(G)≥2m−(n−1)δ(G′)δ(G′)+1+δ(G′) and Δ(G)>Δ(G′)+δ(G′)−1, then μ(G)>μ(G′) and q(G)>q(G′). Also, we obtain that for two connected nonregular (n,m)-graphs G and G′, if Δ(G)≥2m−(n−1)δ(G′)δ(G′)+1+1 and Δ(G)>Δ(G′), then μ(G)>μ(G′)−δ(G′)+1 and q(G)>q(G′)−δ(G′)+1.
Nonregular graphs with a given maximum degree attaining maximum spectral radius

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected nonregular graphs of order $n$ with maximum degree $\Delta$ that attains the maximum spectral radius. Liu and Li (2008) proposed a conjecture stating that $G$ has a degree sequence $(\Delta,\ldots,\Delta,\delta)$ with $\delta<\Delta$. For $\Delta=3$ and $\Delta=4$, Liu (2024) confirmed this conjecture by characterizing the structure of such graphs. Liu also proposed a modified version of the conjecture for fixed $\Delta$ and sufficiently large $n$, stating that the above $\delta=\Delta-1$ if $\Delta$ and $n$ are both odd, $\delta=1$ if $\Delta$ is odd and $n$ is even, and $\delta=\Delta-2$ if $\Delta$ is even. For the cases where $\Delta=n-2$ with $n\ge 5$, and $\Delta=n-3$ with $n\ge 59$, we fully characterize the structure of $G$.

Abstract:In this article, the relationship between vertex degrees and entries of the doubly stochastic graph matrix has been investigated. In particular, we present an upper bound for the main diagonal entries of a doubly stochastic graph matrix and investigate the relations between a kind of distance for graph vertices and the vertex degrees. These results are used to answer in negative Merris' question on doubly stochastic graph matrices. These results may also be used to establish relations between graph structure and entries of doubly stochastic graph matrices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Let $G$ be a regular graph with $m$ edges, and let $\mu_1, \mu_2$ denote the two largest eigenvalues of $A_G$, the adjacency matrix of $G$. We show that, if $G$ is not complete, then $$\mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2 \leq \frac{2(\omega - 1)}{\omega} m$$ where $\omega$ is the clique number of $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Bollobás and Nikiforov for regular graphs. We also show that equality holds if and only if $G$ is either a balanced Turán graph or the disjoint union of two balanced Turán graphs of the same size.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The spectral radius $\rho(G)$ of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. As is well known, $\rho(G)\geq\frac{2m}{n}$ with equality if and only if $G$ is regular. To bound $\rho(G)-\frac{2m}{n}$, Nikiforov (2006) introduced the degree deviation of $G$ as $$s(G)=\sum_{1\leq i\leq n}|d_{i}-\frac{2m}{n}|,$$ where $d_{1},d_{2},\ldots,d_{n}$ are the degrees of the vertices of $G$. Nikiforov conjectured that $\rho(G)-\frac{2m}{n}\leq\sqrt{\frac{1}{2}s(G)}$ for sufficiently large $m$ and $n$. In this paper, we settle this conjecture without the assumption that $m$ and $n$ are large.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For every real $\alpha\in\left[ 0,1\right] $, write $A_{\alpha}\left( G\right) $ for the matrix \[ A_{\alpha}\left( G\right) =\alpha D\left( G\right) +(1-\alpha)A\left( G\right) . \] Let $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) $ be the smallest $\alpha$ for which $A_{\alpha}(G)$ is positive semidefinite. It is known that $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) \leq1/2$. The main results of this paper are: (1) if $G$ is $d$-regular then \[ \alpha_{0}=\frac{-\lambda_{\min}(A(G))}{d-\lambda_{\min}(A(G))}, \] where $\lambda_{\min}(A(G))$ is the smallest eigenvalue of $A(G)$; (2) $G$ contains a bipartite component if and only if $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) =1/2$; (3) if $G$ is $r$-colorable, then $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) \geq1/r$.
A note on extremal constructions for the Erdős--Rademacher problem

Abstract:For given positive integers $r\ge 3$, $n$ and $e\le \binom{n}{2}$, the famous Erd\H os--Rademacher problem asks for the minimum number of $r$-cliques in a graph with $n$ vertices and $e$ edges. A conjecture of Lovász and Simonovits from the 1970s states that, for every $r\ge 3$, if $n$ is sufficiently large then, for every $e\le \binom{n}{2}$, at least one extremal graph can be obtained from a complete partite graph by adding a triangle-free graph into one part. In this note, we explicitly write the minimum number of $r$-cliques predicted by the above conjecture. Also, we describe what we believe to be the set of extremal graphs for any $r\ge 4$ and all large~$n$, amending the previous conjecture of Pikhurko and Razborov.

Abstract:Let A(G) and D(G) be the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of G, respectively. For any real alpha is an element of [0, 1], Nikiforov defined the matrix A(alpha)(G) as A(alpha)(G) = alpha D(G) + (1 - alpha)A(G). In this paper, we generalize some previous results about the A(1/2)-spectral radius of bicyclic graphs with a given degree sequence. Furthermore, we characterize all extremal bicyclic graphs which have the largest A(alpha)-spectral radius in the set of all bicyclic graphs with prescribed degree sequences.

For any real α∈[0,1], Nikiforov (2017) [7] defined the matrix Aα(G) as Aα(G)=αD(G)+(1−α)A(G). Let u and v be two vertices of a connected graph G. Suppose that u and v are connected by a path w0(=v)w1⋯ws−1ws(=u) where d(wi)=2 for 1≤i≤s−1. Let Gp,s,q(u,v) be the graph obtained by attaching the paths Pp to u and Pq to v. Let s=0,1. Nikiforov and Rojo (2018) [9] conjectured that ρα(Gp,s,q(u,v))<ρα(Gp−1,s,q+1(u,v)) if p≥q+2. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture. As applications, firstly, the extremal graph with maximal Aα-spectral radius with fixed order and cut vertices is characterized. Secondly, we characterize the extremal tree which attains the maximal Aα-spectral radius with fixed order and matching number. These results generalize some known results.

Abstract:For a finite, simple, and undirected graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, and largest eigenvalue $\lambda$, Nikiforov introduced the degree deviation of $G$ as $s=\sum_{u\in V(G)}\left|d_G(u)-\frac{2m}{n}\right|$. Contributing to a conjecture of Nikiforov, we show $\lambda-\frac{2m}{n}\leq \sqrt{\frac{2s}{3}}$. For our result, we show that the largest eigenvalue of a graph that arises from a bipartite graph with $m_{A,B}$ edges by adding $m_A$ edges within one of the two partite sets is at most $\sqrt{m_A+m_{A,B}+\sqrt{m_A^2+2m_Am_{A,B}}}$, which is a common generalization of results due to Stanley and Bhattacharya, Friedland, and Peled.

Abstract:ABSTRACT For an algebraic number α we consider the orders of the reductions of α in finite fields. In the case where α is an integer, it is known by the work on Artin’s primitive root conjecture that the order is ‘almost always almost maximal’ assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), but unconditional results remain modest. We consider higher-degree variants under GRH. First, we modify an argument of Roskam to settle the case where α and the reduction have degree two. Second, we give a positive lower density result when α is of degree three and the reduction is of degree two. Third, we give higher-rank results in situations where the reductions are of degree two, three, four or six. As an application we give an almost equidistribution result for linear recurrences modulo primes. Finally, we present a general result conditional to GRH and a hypothesis on smooth values of polynomials at prime arguments.

Abstract:The irregularity strength of a graph $G$, $s(G)$, is the least $k$ such that there exists a $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$-weighting of the edges of $G$ attributing distinct weighted degrees to all vertices, or equivalently the least $k$ enabling obtaining a multigraph with nonrecurring degrees by blowing each edge $e$ of $G$ to at most $k$ copies of $e$. In 1991 Faudree, Jacobson, Kinch and Lehel asked for the optimal lower bound for the minimum degree of a graph $G$ of order $n$ which implies that $s(G)\leq 3$. More generally, they also posed a similar question regarding the upper bound $s(G)\leq K$ for any given constant $K$. We provide asymptotically tight solutions of these problems by proving that such optimal lower bound is of order $\frac{1}{K-1}n$ for every fixed integer $K\geq 3$.

A new asymptotic enumeration technique: the Lovasz Local Lemma

Abstract:Our previous paper applied a lopsided version of the Lovász Local Lemma that allows negative dependency graphs to the space of random injections from an $m$-element set to an $n$-element set. Equivalently, the same story can be told about the space of random matchings in $K_{n,m}$. Now we show how the cited version of the Lovász Local Lemma applies to the space of random matchings in $K_{2n}$. We also prove tight upper bounds that asymptotically match the lower bound given by the Lovász Local Lemma. As a consequence, we give new proofs to results on the enumeration of $d$-regular graphs. The tight upper bounds can be modified to the space of matchings in $K_{n,m}$, where they yield as application asymptotic formulas for permutation and Latin rectangle enumeration problems. The strength of the method is shown by a new result: enumeration of graphs by degree sequence or bipartite degree sequence and girth. As another application, we provide a new proof to the classical probabilistic result of Erd\H os that showed the existence of graphs with arbitrary large girth and chromatic number. If the degree sequence satisfies some mild conditions, almost all graphs with this degree sequence and prescribed girth have high chromatic number.

On the $A_α$-spectral radius of graphs without linear forests

Abstract:Let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ be the adjacency and degree matrices of a simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, respectively. The \emph{$A_\alpha$-spectral radius} of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A_\alpha (G)=\alpha D(G)+(1-\alpha)A(G)$ for a real number $\alpha \in[0,1]$. In this paper, for $\alpha \in (0,1)$, we obtain a sharp upper bound for the $A_\alpha$-spectral radius of graphs on $n$ vertices without a subgraph isomorphic to a liner forest for $n$ large enough and characterize all graphs which attain the upper bound. As a result, we completely obtain the maximum signless Laplacian spectral radius of graphs on $n$ vertices without a subgraph isomorphic to a liner forest for $n$ large enough.
