Abstract:In this paper, we investigate positive solutions of the degenerate parabolic equation not in divergence form: ut=upΔu+auq−bur, subject to the null Dirichlet boundary condition. We at first discuss the existence and nonexistence of global solutions to the problem, and then study the large time behavior for the global solutions. When the positive source dominates the model, we prove that the global solutions uniformly tend to the positive steady state of the problem as t→∞. In particular, we establish the uniform asymptotic profiles for the decay solutions when the problem is governed by the nonlinear diffusion or absorption.

Abstract:This paper addresses the issue of the homogenization of linear divergence form parabolic operators in situations where no ergodicity and no scale separation in time or space are available. Namely, we consider divergence form linear parabolic operators in $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $L^\infty(\Omega \times (0,T))$-coefficients. It appears that the inverse operator maps the unit ball of $L^2(\Omega\times (0,T))$ into a space of functions which at small (time and space) scales are close in $H^1$ norm to a functional space of dimension $n$. It follows that once one has solved these equations at least $n$ times it is possible to homogenize them both in space and in time, reducing the number of operation counts necessary to obtain further solutions. In practice we show under a Cordes-type condition that the first order time derivatives and second order space derivatives of the solution of these operators with respect to caloric coordinates are in $L^2$ (instead of $H^{-1}$ with Euclidean coordinates). If the medium is time-independent, then it is sufficient to solve $n$ times the associated elliptic equation in order to homogenize the parabolic equation.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the classical solutions to the conservation law with degenerate diffusion term (ut−Δx′u=divf(u),x∈Ω⊂Rn,t>0, with x=(x1,x′)). We establish the global existence and exponential decay estimates to the solutions of the initial boundary value problem in domain Ω=R×∏i=2n(0,Li). Meanwhile, to clarify the viscous effect of the degenerate diffusion term, we also investigate the classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of the modified equation ut−Δx′u=(1−χ(D))divf(u),x∈Rn,t>0, with χ(D) a Fourier multiplier operator, we use the frequency decomposition method to establish the global existence and the polynomial decay estimates.

Abstract:The convergence problem of the family of the deformed Euler–Halley iterations with parameters for solving nonlinear operator equations in Banach spaces is studied. Under the assumption that the second derivative of the operator satisfies the Hölder condition, a convergence criterion of the order 2+p of the iteration family is established. An application to a nonlinear Hammerstein integral equation of the second kind is provided.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the following degenerate parabolic equation <math>ut−div(σ(x)|∇u|p−2∇u)+f(x,u)=gin Ω×R+,u=0on ∂Ω×R+,u(x,0)=u0(x)in Ω,</math> where Ω is a smooth bounded domain in <math>RN,(N≥2),1</math>, <math>σ(x)</math> is positive almost everywhere and satisfies proper degenerate conditions. The existence and uniqueness result is proved in the framework of entropy solutions. For the long-time behavior, we prove the existence of a global attractor in <math>Lq(Ω)</math> by using some delicate estimates on the solution, which are derived by taking advantage of both the leading operator and the zero-order nonlinear term. The aforementioned results improve some previous results in the literature in several aspects.

Abstract:We study a class of degenerate parabolic and elliptic equations in divergence form in the upper half space $\{x_d>0\}$. The leading coefficients are of the form $x_d^2a_{ij}$, where $a_{ij}$ are measurable in $(t,x_d)$ except $a_{dd}$, which is measurable in $t$ or $x_d$. Additionally, they have small bounded mean oscillations in the other spatial variables. We obtain the well-posedness and regularity of solutions in weighted mixed-norm Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:We study the homogenization of the equation $-A(\frac{\cdot}{\varepsilon}):D^2 u_{\varepsilon} = f$ posed in a bounded convex domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition and the numerical approximation of the corresponding homogenized problem, where the measurable, uniformly elliptic, periodic and symmetric diffusion matrix $A$ is merely assumed to be essentially bounded and (if $n>2$) to satisfy the Cordes condition. In the first part, we show existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure by reducing to a Lax--Milgram-type problem, we obtain $L^2$-bounds for periodic problems in double-divergence-form, we prove homogenization under minimal regularity assumptions, and we generalize known corrector bounds and results on optimal convergence rates from the classical case of Hölder continuous coefficients to the present case. In the second part, we suggest and rigorously analyze an approximation scheme for the effective coefficient matrix and the solution to the homogenized problem based on a finite element method for the approximation of the invariant measure, and we demonstrate the performance of the scheme through numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the homogenization of a class of nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations with time dependent coefficients in a periodic and stationary structure. In the first part, we consider the homogenization problem with a periodic structure. Inspired by the idea of Akagi and Oka for local nonlinear homogenization, by a change of unknown function, we transform the nonlinear nonlocal term in space into a linear nonlocal scaled diffusive term, while the corresponding linear time derivative term becomes a nonlinear one. By constructing some corrector functions, for different time scales and the nonlinear parameter , we obtain that the limit equation is a local nonlinear diffusion equation with coefficients depending on and . In addition, we also consider the homogenization of the nonlocal porous medium equation with non negative initial values and get similar homogenization results. In the second part, we consider the previous problem in a stationary environment and get some similar homogenization results. The novelty of this paper is two folds. First, for the determination equation with a periodic structure, our study complements the results in literature for and . Second, we consider the corresponding equation with a stationary structure.

Abstract:We consider an abstract Cauchy problem for a doubly nonlinear evolution equation of the form (d/dt) A(u) + B(u) (sic) f(t) in V', t epsilon (0, T], where T is a real reflexive Banach space, A and B are maximal monotone operators (possibly multivalued) from A to its dual V'. In view of some practical applications, we assume that A and B are subdifferentials. By using the back difference approximation, existence is established, and our proof relies on the continuity of A and the coerciveness of B. As an application, we give the existence for a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear degenerate elliptic-parabolic-hyperbolic equation partial derivative(t)g(u) - Delta b(u) - div Phi(u) = f(g(u)) in (0,T) x Omega where g and b are nondecreasing continuous functions, Phi is vectorial and continuous, and f is Lipschitz continuous. We prove the existence, comparison and uniqueness of entropy solutions for the associated initial-boundary-value problem where Omega is a bounded domain in R-N. For the associated initial-value problem where Omega = R-N, N >= 3, the existence of entropy solutions is proved. Moreover, for the case when Phi o g(-1) is locally Holder continuous of order 1 - 1/N, and vertical bar b(u)vertical bar <= omega(vertical bar g(u)vertical bar), where omega is nondecreasing continuous with omega(0) = 0, we can prove the L-1-contraction principle, and hence the uniqueness.

Abstract:This paper deals with homogenization of second order divergence form parabolic operators with locally stationary coefficients. Roughly speaking, locally stationary coefficients have two evolution scales: both an almost constant microscopic one and a smoothly varying macroscopic one. The homogenization procedure aims to give a macroscopic approximation that takes into account the microscopic heterogeneities. This paper follows "Diffusion in a locally stationary random environment" (published in Probability Theory and Related Fields) and improves this latter work by considering possibly degenerate diffusion matrices. The geometry of the homogenized equation shows that the particle is trapped in subspace of R^d.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the well-posedness (existence and uniqueness) of entropy solutions to the general anisotropic degenerate parabolic–hyperbolic equations with L∞ initial data and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We use the doubling variables device to prove a comparison theorem, which implies the uniqueness. The existence of entropy solutions can be obtained by finding the limit of solutions for the regularized equation of strictly parabolic type.

We study the existence of global solutions and the large time behavior for them. The main effort is paid to obtain uniform asymptotic profiles for decay solutions, under various dominations of the nonlinear diffusion or absorption. It is shown that the large time property of the solution u behaves just like (1+(r−1)t)(−1/r−1) if the decay is governed by the nonlinear absorption with 1p+1=q+2; and (iii) −ΔW=W1−p if r,q+2>p+1.
