Abstract:Teleoperated medical robotic systems allow procedures such as surgeries, treatments, and diagnoses to be conducted across short or long distances while utilizing wired and/or wireless communication networks. This study presents a systematic review of the relevant literature between the years 2004 and 2015, focusing on medical teleoperated robotic systems which have witnessed tremendous growth over the examined period. A thorough insight of telerobotics systems discussing design concepts, enabling technologies (namely robotic manipulation, telecommunications, and vision systems), and potential applications in clinical practice is provided, while existing limitations and future trends are also highlighted. A representative paradigm of the short-distance case is the da Vinci Surgical System which is described in order to highlight relevant issues. The long-distance telerobotics concept is exemplified through a case study on diagnostic ultrasound scanning. Moreover, the present review provides a classification into short- and long-distance telerobotic systems, depending on the distance from which they are operated. Telerobotic systems are further categorized with respect to their application field. For the reviewed systems are also examined their engineering characteristics and the employed robotics technology. The current status of the field, its significance, the potential, as well as the challenges that lie ahead are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on robots used for laparoscopic surgery, which is one of the most active areas for research and development of surgical robots. We introduce research and development of laparoscope-holder robots, master-slave robots and hand-held robotic forceps. Then, we discuss future directions for surgical robots. For robot hardware, snake like flexible mechanisms for single-port access surgery (SPA) and NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) and applications of soft robotics are actively used. On the software side, research such as automation of surgical procedures using machine learning is one of the hot topics.

Abstract:Advances in communication technologies have paved the way for telemedicine to transform the delivery of medical care throughout the world. Coinciding developments in minimally invasive surgery and in particular teleoperated robotic surgical systems will allow the surgeon to deliver expert care in remote locations. This study presents a systematic review of telemedicine, focusing on telerobotic surgical systems. A brief historical review of telemedicine and telerobotics is provided, including a description of the various subtypes of telemedicine. Currently available systems and recent experimental utilization, including long-distance remote telesurgery, are discussed. Experimental telerobotic surgical systems and future developments in the field are reviewed and the potential applications are considered. Future challenges to the implementation and opinions on the future direction of telerobotics are provided in this review.

Abstract:Surgical robots are an important branch of medical robots. This paper analyzes the current development status of surgical robots from the perspective of application field classification, summarizes the challenges of various surgical robots such as laparoscopic surgical robots, orthopedic surgical robots, vascular intervention surgical robots, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), and other specialized surgical robots, and predicts and prospects the future development of surgical robots, which provides intelligent support for domestic companies to develop the surgical robot industry. The research results indicate that surgical robot technology is in a period of rapid development, which has helped improve surgical accuracy and treatment effectiveness.

Abstract:Urology has continuously embraced novel technologies like laparoscopy that reduce patient morbidity yet maintain an excellent standard of care. Because of limitations on maneuverability, operative vision, manual dexterity, and tactile sense, laparoscopy can be more difficult to perform than corresponding tasks in open surgery. To potentially increase clinical applicability of laparoscopy, robots that enhance operative performance have recently been introduced for a variety of laparoscopic procedures such as laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, and even laparoscopic cystectomy and neobladder construction. While these robots have generated excitement and many robotic applications have been described, the benefit of the advanced technology in expanded series of patients remains largely unknown. In addition, the ability of telerobotics to be used by surgeons inexperienced in conventional laparoscopy is also poorly understood. This review compares current features of available robots, advantages and limitations of robots, the emerging clinical applications, and the future potential of robotics in urology.

Abstract:As an innovative minimally invasive surgical technology, robot-assisted surgery (RAS) has greatly improved the accuracy and safety of surgery through the advantages of three-dimensional magnification, tremor filtering, precision and flexibility, and has been carried out by an increasing number of surgeries. In recent years, robots have been gradually applied to children, bringing new ideas and challenges to pediatric surgeons. This review will describe the advantages and limitations of robotic surgery in children, summarize its application in pediatric surgery, and provide an outlook. It is believed that clinicians should actively carry out RAS under the premise of rigorously ensuring surgical indications and strive to improve the efficacy of surgical treatment for children.

Abstract:Minimally invasive surgery which began in 1980s has become an important part in the field of gynecologic tumor surgery.However,counterintuitive hand-movement,two-dimensional visualization and limited degrees of instrument motion that makes conservative laparoscopic surgery unable to meet every patient's needs.Robotic-assisted surgery carries with its advantages.Clinical research compared the value and outcomes of roboticassisted gynecologic surgery,conservative laparoscopic gynecologic surgery and laparotomy.With advanced system and three-dimensional visualization,through long-curve training as well as practising with instruments,more gynecologic authorities and surgeons become familiar with this new technology.

Abstract:Therapeutic endoscopic resection has gained favor for its ability to achieve high en bloc and histologically complete resection rates via a minimally invasive approach. The main technical difficulties faced by interventionists are first the lack of traction causing suboptimal visualization of the dissection field and second, the lack of triangulation using existing therapeutic apparatuses. These challenges can be overcome with the use of robots and the multiple degrees of freedom afforded by the robotic wrists. Nevertheless, complications such as bleeding and perforation can occur. It is hence beneficial for the robotic device to be equipped with additional abilities such as suturing. Once the robotic prototypes have been fully optimized and marketed, a structured program should be instituted to ensure proper and adequate training of the end-users. The future of robotics should then explore the possibility of developing a soft robot or a robot with more natural human-like movements. A robot with a force feedback mechanism would be superior and improve safety. Eventually, a supervised autonomous robot may perform interventions with greater precision and accuracy than an expert procedurist. This review describes the benefits of robot-assisted endoscopic resections, recent developments aimed at managing iatrogenic complications and future directions for robotic endoscopy.

Abstract:BackgroundIn recent years, surgical robots have become an indispensable part of the medical field. Surgical robots are increasingly being used in the areas of gynecological surgery, urological surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, etc. In this paper, the development of surgical robots in different operations is reviewed and analyzed. In the type of master-slave surgical robotic system, the robotic surgical instrument arms were located in the execution terminal of a surgical robot system, as one of the core components, and directly contact with the patient during the operation, which plays an important role in the efficiency and safety of the operation. In clinical, the arm function and design in different systems varies. Furtherly, the current research progress of robotic surgical instrument arms used in different operations is analyzed and summarized. Finally, the challenge and trend are concluded. MethodsAccording to the classification of surgical types, the development of surgical robots for laparoscopic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and microsurgery are analyzed and summarized. Then, focusing on the research of robotic surgical instrument arms, according to structure type, the research and application of straight-rod surgical instrument arm, joint surgical instrument arm and continuous surgical instrument arm are analyzed respectively. ResultsAccording to the discussion and summary of the characteristics of the existing surgical robots and instrument arms, it is concluded that they still have a lot of room for development in the future. Therefore, the development trends of the surgical robot and instrument arm are discussed and analyzed in the five aspects of structural materials, modularization, telemedicine, intelligence and human-machine collaboration. ConclusionSurgical robots have shown the development trend of miniaturization, intelligence, autonomy and dexterity. Thereby, in the field of science and technology, the research on the next generation of minimally invasive surgical robots will usher in a peak period of development.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Multiple robotic flexible endoscope platforms have been developed based on cross specialty collaboration between engineers and medical doctors. However, significant number of these platforms have been developed for the natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery paradigm. Increasing amount of evidence suggest the focus of development should be placed on advanced endolumenal procedures such as endoscopic submucosal dissection instead. A thorough literature analysis was performed to assess the current status of robotic flexible endoscopic platforms designed for advanced endolumenal procedures. Current efforts are mainly focused on robotic locomotion and robotic instrument control. In the future, advances in actuation and servoing technology, optical analysis, augmented reality and wireless power transmission technology will no doubt further advance the field of robotic endoscopy. Globally, health systems have become increasingly budget conscious; widespread acceptance of robotic endoscopy will depend on careful design to ensure its delivery of a cost effective service.
Telerobotic surgery: applications on human patients and training with virtual reality

Abstract:This paper deals with the developed researches and applications on telerobotic surgery, devoted to human patients and with training by virtual reality. The researches have been developed in cooperation between Telerobotics Laboratory, Department of Mechanics, Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and Automation and Control Section, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, USA. The researches carried to a telesurgery robotic operation on a dummy on 7th July 1993, by means of satellites communications, to a prostatic biopsy on a human patient on 1st September 1995 with optical fibers, to results on time delay effects, to results on virtual reality applications for training on laparoscopy and surgery. The search implied time delay when the control input originated in Politecnico di Milano, Italy. The results were satisfactory, but also pointed out the need for specific new control transformations to ease the operator's or surgeon's visual/mental workload for hand-eye coordination. In the same research, dummy force commands from JPL to Milan were sent, and were echoed immediately back to JPL, measuring the round-trip time of the command signal. This, to some degree, simulates a contact force feedback situation. The results were very surprising; despite the fact that the ISDN calls are closed and "private" calls, the round-trip time exhibited great variations not only between calls but also within the same call. The results proved that telerobotics and telecontrol may be applied to surgery. Time latency variations are caused by features of communication network, of sending and receiving end computer software. The problem and its solution is also an architectural issue, and considerable improvements are possible. Virtual reality in the application of the research is a strong support to training on virtual objects and not on living beings.

Annual Review of Control Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Abstract:Medical robotics is a rapidly advancing discipline that is leading the evolution of robot-assisted surgery, personalized rehabilitation and assistance, and hospital automation. In China, both research and commercial developments in medical robotics have undergone exponential growth in recent years. In this review, we first give an overview of the clinical and social demands that motivate the rapid development in medical robotics. For each subdiscipline (surgery, rehabilitation and personal assistance, and hospital automation), we then summarize the major research projects sponsored by National Key Research and Development Programs. The remaining technical, commercial, and regulatory challenges are highlighted. This review also outlines some of the new opportunities in endoluminal and interventional robotics, micro- and nanorobotics, soft exoskeletons, intelligent human–robot interaction, and telemedicine and telesurgery, which may support the general uptake of robotics in medicine.

Abstract:Recent technological advances in surgery have resulted in the development of a range of new techniques that have reduced patient trauma, shortened hospitalization, and improved diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcome. Despite the many appreciated benefits of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) compared to traditional approaches, there are still significant drawbacks associated with conventional MIS including poor instrument control and ergonomics caused by rigid instrumentation and its associated fulcrum effect. The use of robot assistance has helped to realize the full potential of MIS with improved consistency, safety and accuracy. The development of articulated, precision tools to enhance the surgeon's dexterity has evolved in parallel with advances in imaging and human-robot interaction. This has improved hand-eye coordination and manual precision down to micron scales, with the capability of navigating through complex anatomical pathways. In this review paper, clinical requirements and technical challenges related to the design of robotic platforms for flexible access surgery are discussed. Allied technical approaches and engineering challenges related to instrument design, intraoperative guidance, and intelligent human-robot interaction are reviewed. We also highlight emerging designs and research opportunities in the field by assessing the current limitations and open technical challenges for the wider clinical uptake of robotic platforms in MIS.

Abstract:Background: Robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery has been an important development direction in the field of surgery in recent years and it is also one of the fastest developing and most concerning fields in surgical operations. Aim: To illustrate the major areas of research and forward-looking directions over the past twenty-six years. Methods: Using the Web of Science Core Collection database, a comprehensive review of scholarly articles pertaining to robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery was researched out between 2000 and 2023. We used Citespace (Version 6.2.4) and Bibliometrix package (Version 4.3.0) to visualize the analysis of all publications including country, institutional affiliations, authors, and keywords. Results: In total, 346 articles were retrieved. Surgical Endoscopy had with the largest number of publications and was cited in this field. The United States was a core research country in this field. Yonsei University was the most productive institution. The current focus of this field is on rectal surgery, long-term prognosis, perioperative management, previous surgical experience, and the learning curve. Conclusion: The scientific interest in robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery has experienced a significant rise since 1997. This study provides new perspectives and ideas for future research in this field.

Abstract:With the advantages of stable and three-dimension image and the convenience of surgery manipulation of robotic surgical system,it is widely applied in the surgery of rectal cancer.In this paper,the surgical technique and application change of robotic surgical system are reviewed and its outlook is discussed.Currently,it is reported that robotic surgery for colorectal cancer is safe and feasible.However,no short-term or long-term clinical outcomes are found between the two groups.With the development of surgical instruments and ongoing of large sample studies,robotic surgical system will play a more active role in the treatment of rectal cancer.
