Abstract:Objective To find the best teaching mode of using resin transparent tooth models for the practice of root canal treatment in pre-clinical training. Methods Resin transparent tooth models were used in the pre-clinical practice training in Stomatology School of Peking University. Two teaching modes were designed, one was blind root canal preparation  transparent preparation  second transparent preparation, the other was transparent root canal preparation  blind preparation  second transparent preparation. The feedback of students was gotten through questionnaires. The results were analyzed by χ2 test. A experienced dentists group of reference was set up.Results Students could hardly understand some key steps of root canal preperation much more, such as the importance of access outline form and convenience form, and the effect of dentin mud obturating root canal, if they practise on the resin transparent tooth model with direct vision first, for lack of acquaintance with clinical questions. The teaching mode of blind root canal preparation  transparent preparation worked much better than the other. Second transparent preparation gave a chance for students to realize ulteriorly the whole process of pulp cavity preparation, and make them understand deeply the aim and effect of instrumentation, especially thorough debridement.Conclusion The best teaching mode is blind root canal preparation  second transparent preparation extracted human teeth preparation  transparent preparation. It could exert the advantage of resin transparent tooth model thoroughly, and get the best teaching effect. It's believed that resin transparent tooth model could be used in refresher course.
