Abstract:Highly enantioselective epoxidation of α,β-unsaturated ketones with cumene hydroperoxide is accomplished with heterogenization of Shibasaki’s Binol/La catalyst. While many different linkers were tested with different topologies the simple 1,4-ethynyl-phenylene showed consistently high yields and enantioselectivities. The catalyst was formed by addition of the chiral unit to a solution of the metal in THF. The precipitated solid catalyst was shown to have high activity and selectivity through six runs at a loading of 5 mol%.

Abstract:AbstractReported is a highly enantioselective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov protoboration of unactivated terminal alkenes. A variety of simple and abundant feedstock α‐olefins bearing a diverse array of functional groups and heterocyclic substituents can be used as substrates, and the reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature to provide expedient access to enantioenriched alkylboronic esters in good regioselectivity and with excellent enantiocontrol. Critical to the success of the protocol was the development and application of a novel, sterically hindered N‐heterocyclic carbene, (R,R,R,R)‐ANIPE, as the ligand for copper.

Abstract:A new strategy for generating assembled polymeric chiral titanium complexes using linked bis-BINOL ligands have been developed, and the assembled catalysts showed excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96.5% ee) for carbonyl-ene reaction under heterogeneous conditions to afford corresponding alpha-hydroxy esters in high yield. The linkers between two BINOL units of the ligands in the assembled catalysts were found to have significant impact on the enantioselectivity of reaction, which demonstrated the importance of the supramolecular structures of the assemblies for their catalytic behaviours. Abstract:Nickel catalysts have shown unique ligand control of stereoselectivity in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of boronates with benzylic pivalates and derivatives involving C(sp3)-O cleavage. The SIMes ligand (1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) produces the stereochemically inverted C-C coupling product, while the tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) ligand delivers the retained stereochemistry. We have explored the mechanism and origins of the ligand-controlled stereoselectivity with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The oxidative addition determines the stereoselectivity with two competing transition states, an SN2 back-side attack type transition state that inverts the benzylic stereogenic center and a concerted oxidative addition through a cyclic transition state, which provides stereoretention. The key difference between the two transition states is the substrate-nickel-ligand angle distortion; the ligand controls the selectivity by differentiating the ease of this angle distortion. For the PCy3 ligand, the nickel-ligand interaction involves mainly σ-donation, which does not require a significant energy penalty for the angle distortion. The facile angle distortion with PCy3 ligand allows the favorable cyclic oxidative addition transition state, leading to the stereoretention. For the SIMes ligand, the extra d-p back-donation from nickel to the coordinating carbene increases the rigidity of the nickel-ligand bond, and the corresponding angle distortion is more difficult. This makes the concerted cyclic oxidative addition unfavorable with SIMes ligand, and the back-side SN2-type oxidative addition delivers the stereoinversion.

Abstract:A series of chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-disulfonic acids was designed, synthesized, and applied in a highly enantioselective Ti-catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of nonactivated alkenes. The catalyst is probably a complex between two chiral binaphthyldisulfonate ligands and a bis(mu-oxo)-dititanium(IV) core structure. The sulfonamide groups of the ligands and water are necessary for the catalysis, as they may stabilize the catalytically active complex through hydrogen bonding. Various 2-methylcoumarans were obtained in up to greater than 99% yields and up to 97% enantiomeric excess under mild conditions.

Abstract:(R)-(+)-1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol ((R)-(+)-Binol)-functionalized (Binol- 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl) chiral mesoporous organosilica nanospheres with uniform particle size (100 to 300 nm) have been synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and (R)-2,2'-di(methoxymethyl) oxy-6,6'di(1-propyl trimethoxysilyl)-1,1'-binaphthyl in a basic medium with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the template. Nanospheres with a radiative 2D hexagonal channel arrangement exhibit higher enantioselectivity and turnover frequency than those with a penetrating 2D hexagonal channel arrangement (94 versus 88% and 43 versus 15 h(-1), respectively) in the asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. In addition, under similar conditions, the enantioselectivity of the nanospheres can be greatly improved as the structural order of the framework increases. These results clearly show that the structural order of nanospheres affects enantioselective reactions. The enantioselectivity of the nanospheres synthesized by the co-condensation method is higher than that of nanospheres prepared by a grafting method and even higher than that of their homogeneous counterpart. These results indicate that the bite angle of (R)-(+)-Binol bridging in a more rigid porous network is in a more favorable position for achieving higher enantioselectivity. The efficiency of a co-condensation method for the synthesis of high-performance heterogeneous asymmetric catalysts is also reported.

Abstract:A new strategy for the heterogenization of chiral titanium complexes was developed by the in situ assembly of bridged multitopic BINOL ligands with [Ti(OiPr)4] without using a support. The assembled heterogeneous catalysts (self-supported) showed excellent enantioselectivity in both the carbonyl-ene reaction of alpha-methylstyrene with ethyl glyoxylate (up to 98 % ee) and the oxidation of sulfides (up to >99 % ee). The catalytic performance of these heterogeneous catalytic systems was comparable or even superior to that attained with their homogeneous counterparts. The spacers between the two BINOL units of the ligands in the assembled catalysts had significant impact on the enantioselectivity of the carbonyl-ene reaction. This demonstrates the importance of the supramolecular structures of the assemblies on their catalytic behavior. In the catalysis of sulfoxidation, the self-supported heterogeneous titanium catalysts were highly stable and could be readily recycled and reused for over one month (at least eight cycles) without significant loss of activity and enantioselectivity (up to >99.9 % ee). The features of these self-supported catalysts, such as facile preparation, robust chiral structure of solid-state catalysts, high density of the catalytically active units in the solids, as well as easy recovery and simple recycling, are particularly important in developing methods for the synthesis of optically active compounds in industrial processes.

Abstract:A new family of atropisomeric bisoxazoline ligands 2 with a bridge across the 5,5′-position of biphenyl has been developed. The axial chirality of this type of ligands can be retained by macro-ring strain produced by 5,5′-linkage of biphenyls even without 6,6′-substituents on biphenyls. The Pd(II)-2d complex as catalyst showed high catalytic activity and enantioselectivity for asymmetric Wacker-type cyclization of allylphenols.

Abstract:Three chiral Mn(salen) complexes were immobilized into different mesoporous material via phenoxy group by a simplified method and they show high activity and enantioselectivity for asymmetric epoxidation of various substituted unfunctional olefins. The heterogeneous Mn(salen) catalysts show comparable ee values for asymmetric epoxidation of styrene and 6-cyano-2,2-dimethylchromene and much higher ee values for epoxidation of α-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 79.7% ee versus homogeneous 26.4% ee) and cis-β-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 94.9% ee versus homogeneous 25.3% ee for cis-epoxide) than the homogeneous catalysts. These heterogeneous catalysts also remarkably alter the cis/trans ratio of epoxides for asymmetric epoxidation of cis-β-methylstyrene (heterogeneous 21 versus homogeneous 0.38). The axial tether group does not make a big effect on ee values and the increase in ee value and change in cis/trans ratio are mainly attributed to the axial immobilization mode and the support effect of heterogeneous catalysts. The catalysts keep constant ee values for the recycle tests of eight times for asymmetric epoxidation of α-methylstyrene. And several possibilities were proposed to elucidate the difference in ee values of heterogeneous catalysts from homogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Two chiral polymers based on binaphthol(BINOL) were synthesized. The polymer can be used as a chiral inducer to coordinate with ZnEt2 to form a recoverable self-supporting catalyst, which could be used in the asymmetric catalytic reaction of alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones. The target products of high yield and good enantioselectivity(e.e. value up to 99%) can be obtained under mild conditions. The catalytic activity was not reduced significantly after 4 or 5 cycles of recovery of the recovered polymers.

Abstract:Chiral bis(oxazoline) complexes of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Mg(II) have been immobilized on silica support via hydrogen-bonding interactions. Up to 93% ee is obtained in the Diels–Alder reaction between 3-((E)-2-butenoyl)-1,3-oxazolin-2-one and cyclopentadiene at room temperature with the heterogeneous bis(oxazoline) complexes, and the catalysts can be recycled without losing enantioselectivity. Experimental and theoretical studies show that the reversal of the absolute product configuration upon immobilization of the PhBOX-Cu(II) catalyst is triggered by the anion dissociation from Cu(II) onto the surface of the support.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective epoxidation of olefins plays an important role in the production of optically-active epoxy. Transition-metal complexes prove efficient for the catalytic epoxidation of un-functionalized olefins by employing privileged chiral ligands with rotational symmetry and bulky substituents, which usually require complicated multistep synthesis and are often very expensive. Here, this work proposes an efficient strategy to promote the enantioselectivity of Mn(III)-catalyzed indene epoxidation, which simply utilizes the nanosheets of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to modify α-amino acid derivatives as chiral ligands, achieving an enantioselectivity of more than 91.0%, much higher than that (<35%) in the previous reports using chiral ligands without any rotational-symmetry. By virtue of "flexible" interlayer spaces of LDHs, intercalated L-tert-leucine, L-valine, L-leucine, and L-phenylalanine anions have further been derived in situ to L-tert-leucine, L-valine, L-leucine, and L-phenylalanine Schiff base anions. Over the Mn(III) coordinated with L-phenylalanine Schiff base anion intercalated LDHs, an indene conversion of 81.0±1.0%, a chem-selectivity of 89.0±1.0%, and an enantiomeric excesses (ee) value of 94.5±0.5% for (1S,2R)-1,2-epoxyindane have been afforded. The spatial effects of LDH nanosheets on the enantioselectivity have been investigated, focusing on the interlayer orientation and arrangement order of intercalated amino acid derivative anions. The strategy has been proved valid for the epoxidation of functionalized olefins, which is more challenging, including allylic alcohols, chalcone, and chromene derivatives.

Abstract:Layered zinc and lanthanum hydroxide nitrates were first applied as two ion-exchangeable supports for immobilizing a chiral sulphonato-(salen)manganese(III) complex, and the resulted catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, elemental analysis, ICP-AES, TGA, conductivity, XRD, nitrogen physisorption, along with aqueous particle size and zeta potential. Heterogeneous catalysts showed moderate to good conversions and excellent enantioselectivities in epoxidation of styrene and α-methylstyrene when iodosylbenzene was employed as terminal oxidant. Furthermore, the superiority came from heterogeneity, and only filtration could lead to an effective separation of catalyst from product solution.
