Abstract:The lack of boundary controls is often encountered in practical applications and causes a crucial difficulty for realizing the exact boundary controllability. In this paper, taking the Saint-Venant system as example, by means of a global constructive method based on the theory on the semi-global C1 solution to quasilinear hyperbolic systems, we establish the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for unsteady flows on a tree-like network of open canals. The principles of providing the nodal profiles, of choosing the boundary controls and of transferring the boundary controls are presented, respectively.

Abstract:Based on the theory of exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for hyperbolic systems, the authors propose the concept of exact boundary controllability of partial nodal profile to expand the scope of applications. With the new concept, we can shorten the controllability time, save the number of controls, and increase the number of charged nodes with given nodal profiles. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of in-situ controlled node to deal with a new situation that one node can be charged and controlled simultaneously. The minimum number of boundary controls on the entire tree-like network is determined by using the concept of ‘degree of freedom of charged nodes’ introduced. And the concept of ‘control path’ is introduced to appropriately divide the network, so that we can determine the infimum of controllability time. General frameworks of constructive proof are given on a single interval, a star-like network, a chain-like network and a planar tree-like network for linear wave equation(s) with Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin and dissipative boundary conditions to establish a complete theory on the exact boundary controllability of partial nodal profile.

Abstract:This paper proposes a boundary feedback control design for open canal networks using the linearization of boundary conditions. For open canal networks with any types of cross-sections, which can be modelled by the Saint-Venant equations, the characteristic form in terms of Riemann invariants has been established. Under this established characteristic form, the stabilizing boundary control law has been developed by linearizing the boundary conditions for both a single reach and the open-channel network composed by multi-reaches in a cascade. The design of the boundary feedback control laws for both a single canal and the cascaded networks is illustrated in a unified framework, which extends the results in the literature.

Abstract:This paper considers the boundary control of a star-shaped open-channel network modeled by the Saint-Venant equations. We present the boundary feedback stabilization of the Saint-Venant equations by means of a Riemann invariants method. The estimation of the parameters satisfying the stability condition is deduced. The boundary feedback control is developed to guarantee that the solution of the control system decays exponentially, only by taking the water levels at the gate boundaries as the feedback.

Abstract:This paper concerns a system of equations describing the vibrations of a planar network of nonlinear Timoshenko beams. The authors derive the equations and appropriate nodal conditions, determine equilibrium solutions and, using the methods of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, prove that for tree-like networks the natural initial-boundary value problem admits semi-global classical solutions in the sense of Li [Li, T. T., Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems, AIMS Ser. Appl. Math., vol 3, American Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Higher Education Press, 2010] existing in a neighborhood of the equilibrium solution. The authors then prove the local exact controllability of such networks near such equilibrium configurations in a certain specified time interval depending on the speed of propagation in the individual beams.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. The paper deals with the boundary controllability of a family of nonlinear Boussinesq systems introduced by J. L. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut to describe the two-way propagation of small amplitude gravity waves on the surface of water in a canal. By combining the classical duality approach and a careful spectral analysis of the operator associated with the state equations, we first obtain the exact controllability of the linearized system in suitable Hilbert spaces. Then, by means of a contraction mapping principle, we establish the local exact controllability for the original nonlinear system.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the theory on the semiglobal classicalsolution to first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with a kindof nonlocal boundary conditions, and based on this, thecorresponding exact boundary controllability and observability areobtained by a constructive method. Moreover, with the linearizedSaint-Venant system and the 1-D linear wave equation as examples, weshow that the number of both boundary controls and boundaryobservations can not be reduced, and consequently, we conclude thatthe exact boundary controllability for a hyperbolic system in anetwork with loop can not be realized generically.

Abstract:The ultimate goal of exploring complex networks is to control them. As such, controllability of complex networks has been intensively investigated. Despite recent advances in studying the impact of a network's topology on its controllability, a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic impact of network topology and dynamics on controllability is still lacking. Here, we explore the controllability of flow-conservation networks, trying to identify the minimal number of driver nodes that can guide the network to any desirable state. We develop a method to analyze the controllability on flow-conservation networks based on exact controllability theory, transforming the original analysis on adjacency matrix to Laplacian matrix. With this framework, we systematically investigate the impact of some key factors of networks, including link density, link directionality, and link polarity, on the controllability of these networks. We also obtain the analytical equations by investigating the network's structural properties approximatively and design the efficient tools. Finally, we consider some real networks with flow dynamics, finding that their controllability is significantly different from that predicted by only considering the topology. These findings deepen our understanding of network controllability with flow-conservation dynamics and provide a general framework to incorporate real dynamics in the analysis of network controllability.

Then we adopt a constructive method to establish the exact boundary controllability for one-dimensional non-autonomous quasilinear wave equations with various types of boundary conditions. Abstract:We study the controllability of a Partial Differential Equation of transport type, that arises in crowd models. We are interested in controlling it with a control being a vector field, representing a perturbation of the velocity, localized on a fixed control set. We prove that, for each initial and final configuration, one can steer approximately one to another with Lipschitz controls when the uncontrolled dynamics allows to cross the control set. We also show that the exact controllability only holds for controls with less regularity, for which one may lose uniqueness of the associated solution.
