Abstract:The next generation gas cleaning system - called multiple pollutants emission control system - to remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles simultaneously, can be applied based on ions and radicals generated by corona plasmas. Potential applications are flue gas cleaning, odor control, inactivation of microorganisms, wastewater cleaning, synthesis gas cleaning, methane reforming, hydrogen production from fossil fuels, material surface treatment, and nano-particle generation. There are two critical issues to be overcome for large-scale industrial applications, i.e, namely the capacity and the cost of repetitive pulsed power techniques, and the total energy consumption. A discussion covers the characteristics of corona plasmas; multiple pollutants emission control; and cost evaluation of industrial plasma processing; and potential applications in odor emission control, exhaust gas cleaning, and VOC emission control. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 98th AWMA Annual Conference and Exhibition (Minneapolis, MN 6/21-24/2005).

Abstract:This paper discusses some critical issues of developing industrial streamer corona plasma systems for gas cleaning. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, two energization methods, namely hybrid-pulsed power source (HPPS) and DC-superimposed, high-frequency AC oscillation (DC/AC), were developed for industrial applications. As an example, a result of an industrial investigation on odor emission abatement is presented. The data available is sufficient enough for the commercial-scale design of a corona plasma system for DeNO(x), DeSO(2), deodorization and dust removal. We foresee that by retrofitting available ESPs, plasma-based gas-cleaning systems will be applied in the near future to simultaneously remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is effective for degradation of aromatic molecules, achieving complete mineralization, however, is difficult. In contrast, thermal catalysis may be very effective toward achieving complete mineralization at high temperatures. Its drawbacks at a low processing temperature are undesirable intermediate byproducts production. By integrating dielectric barrier discharge with home-made Ag-MnOx catalyst, we have succeeded in achieving both VOCs complete decomposition and without toxic byproducts production. As an example, this paper reports toluene decomposition in air. The effects of the reaction temperature and the plasma specific energy density on the decomposition efficiency and byproducts formation are experimentally investigated. Very effective synergetic effect between the NTP and catalyst has been observed for VOCs decomposition.

Abstract:Bio-effects of non-thermal plasma include lethality of microorganisms and stimulation of mammalian cells,which brings up a series of techniques in disinfection and clinical medicine.In this paper,the applications of non-thermal plasma in medical device sterilization,water and air cleaning,as well as food and package treatment are reviewed.Commercialized plasma sterilizer for medical devices can be classified into vacuum and atmospheric pressure,the volume of the former is much larger while the latter is more simple and easy to operate.For disinfection of water,air and food,it is not yet commercialized due to its energy consumption,efficiency or chemical residues.In the last decade,the developed plasma sources and techniques for medicine are successfully applied to treatment of decayed tooth,skin,wound,and cancer,with some of them approved for clinical practice.In the future,the research focus will be identifying the interactions between plasmas and cells,and developing more effective and practical equipment for different applications.
Wipe out of Stench from Landfill Leachate by Non-Thermal Plasma Combined with Blow-off

Abstract:A method combined non-thermal plasma and blow-off was employed to wipe out of stench from landfill leachate.A new type of high pulse voltage source with Blumlein pulse forming network(BPFN) was adopted,and all experiments were conducted at a fixed pulse frequency of 100Hz.The influences of important factors,such as gas flow rate,peak voltage and humidity,on removal efficiency of odors were studied.The results showed that the combined method could wipe efficiently out of stench from landfill leachate.Ammonia was taken as the experimental object since it was the main component of odors from landfill leachate.Higher peak voltages could promote removal efficiency of ammonia while larger flow rates reduced it.The removal efficiency of ammonia in plasma reactor could reach 92.5% after continuous operating 10min at conditions of:ammonia concentration 520mg.m-3,peak voltage 37kV and flow rate 1000 ml.min-1.A dynamic model was developed to describe quantitatively the relation between ammonia and energy density and initial concentration.A certain level of humidity in flow gas could enhance oxidation of malodorous gas such as ammonia.In plasma chemistry process,ammonia was removed by direct decomposition by high energy electrons or by reaction with intermediates to form NH4NO2 and NH4NO3.

Abstract:The single non-thermal plasma(NTP) technology has the disadvantages of poor decomposition effect and low energy efficiency in VOCs removal,and some toxic by-produced will produced during the decomposition process.So,the non-thermal plasma catalysis technology has received more and more concern as it can achieve higher decomposition rate and energy efficiency,better CO2 selectivity and reduce the unwanted byproducts.This paper discussed the reactor shape,the synergetic mechanisms of non-thermal plasma catalysis system,and also comprehensively introduced the current application status of single-stage and two-stage non-thermal plasma catalysis systems.Finally,it was point out that the non-thermal plasma catalysis technology has the perfect prospect in VOCs removal,while there are still lots of problems to solve to realize the real engineering application.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma (NTP) catalysis has attracted widespread attention in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Combining NTP with heterogeneous catalyst has been proved to reduce the formation of unwanted by-products and improve the energy efficiency of the process. The mechanisms of interaction with plasma and catalyst and VOCs oxidation in plasma catalysis are particularly hot research topic. This paper reviewed the mechanism of non-thermal plasma catalysis on volatile organic compounds removal. In the first part, the interaction between plasma and catalyst is disscussed. And the different catalysis systems and discharge types are presented in the second part. In the third part, attention is given to the influence of critical parameters on the removal processes. Finally, based on a large number of literatures, an extended review is presented detailly on the treatment of VOCs with plasma-catalysis system including the oxidation pathways. Moreover, future works of this promising technology are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the research on NTP synergized with MOFs catalyst for VOCs removal is systematically described. The current research on NTP mainly focuses on catalyst design, and MOFs has attracted the attention of scholars as a novel catalytic material for catalytic oxidation of VOCs. This will inspire researchers to rationally design MOFs‐based nanocatalysts for the efficient elimination of VOCs. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions are a factor in a number of environmental issues. To reduce the associated negative consequences, it is crucial to develop efficient VOCs removal systems. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) co‐catalytic technology has become a popular research topic in this field as a result of its ability to reduce the activation energy of the reaction while simultaneously improving product selectivity. Despite the huge number of studies synthesising the use of metals and their oxide catalysts in the degradation of VOCs, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF derivatives are the subject of comparatively few studies in this area. This paper reviews the basic principles and technological progress of NTP co‐catalytic VOCs degradation, with a focus on the use of MOFs and their derivatives in plasma VOCs degradation, as well as the use of other non‐metallic carbon materials in plasma VOCs degradation. It highlights the potential future development direction of NTP catalytic synergistic treatment of VOCs by focusing on the optimization of catalytic synergism on the treatment impact. In the end, the challenges faced, the prospects, and our personal perspective on future research directions are also estimated and elucidated.

Abstract:Development of plasma methods for chemical transformation of CO2and CH4 into useful compounds is of paramount importance from two standpoints of C1 chemistry and so-called green chemistry.Thermal plasma which has high temperature and high enthalpy was used to study carbon dioxide decomposition,methane decomposition and carbon dioxide reforming of methane.The results show that thermal plasma is an effective means for carbon dioxide and methane transform.The mutual promotion between carbon dioxide and methane in reforming process should be considered in order to obtain high conversion of CH4 and CO2,and high chemical energy efficiency.

Abstract:The emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from stationary sources,primarily from power stations,industrial heaters and cogeneration plants,represents a major environmental problem. This paper intends to give a general review over the advances in non-thermal plasma assisted selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with lower hydrocarbon compounds. In the last decade,the non-thermal plasma induced SCR of nitrogen oxide with low hydrocarbon compounds has received much attention. The different hydrocarbons (≤C3) used in the research are discussed. As we know, methane is more difficultly activated than non-methane hydrocarbons,such as ethylene and propylene etc. The reduction mechanism is also discussed. In addition,aiming at the difficulties existed,the direction for future research is prospected.
Volatile organic compounds degradation by nonthermal plasma: a review

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have posed a severe threat on both ecosystem and human health which thus have gained much attention in recent years. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) as an alternative to traditional methods has been employed to degrade VOC in the atmosphere and wastewater for its high removal efficiency (up to 100%), mild operating conditions, and environmental friendliness. This review outlined the principles of NTP production and the applications on VOC removal in different kinds of reactors, like single/double dielectric barrier discharge, surface discharge, and gliding arc discharge reactors. The combination of NTP with catalysts/oxidants was also applied for VOC degradation to further promote the energy efficiency. Further, detailed explanations were given of the effect of various important factors including input/reactor/external conditions on VOC degradation performance. The reactive species (e.g., high-energy electrons, HO·, O·, N2+, Ar+, O3, H2O2) generated in NTP discharge process have played crucial roles in decomposing VOC molecules; therefore, their variation under different parameter conditions along with the reaction mechanisms involved in these NTP technologies was emphatically explained. Finally, a conclusion of the NTP technologies was presented, and special attention was paid to future challenges for NTP technologies in VOC treatment to stimulate the advances in this topic.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are some of the most common air pollutants emitted from commercial and industrial processes; VOCs may also reduce indoor air quality. Increased environmental awareness, however, has resulted in stringent regulations controlling VOCs emission and has motivated researchers to develop various kinds of treatment. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) processes are regarded as promising methods for VOCs abatement. This paper reviews the state of the art and achievements of NTP for VOCs abatement and includes a description of several reactor configurations based on different discharge principles. Of particular interest are NTP-catalytic systems, characterized by higher energy efficiencies and lower byproduct production than the NTP-alone systems. Physical–chemical effects of NTP-catalytic systems occurring during plasma catalytic processes are discussed. The NTP decomposition mechanisms for toluene, naphthalene and trichloroethylene are discussed in detail. Influences of various processing parameters are summarized, and comments are given based on removal efficiencies and operational costs.

Abstract:Odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) deteriorate the quality of life and affect human health. In this study, a process was developed to remove an odorous VOC using a combined non-thermal plasma (NTP) and wet scrubber (WS) system. The low removal efficiency of WSs and the large amount of ozone generated by NTP were resolved. Compared to the decomposition effects when using a WS and NTP separately, the NTP + WS system improved the removal efficiency of ethyl acrylate (EA) and significantly reduced ozone emissions. The maximum EA removal efficiency was 99.9%. Additionally, an EA removal efficiency of over 53.4% and a 100% ozone removal efficiency were achieved even at discharge voltages lower than 4.5 kV. Ozone catalysis was confirmed to occur in the NTP + WS system. Furthermore, we verified the removal of by-products such as residual ozone and formaldehyde, which is a representative organic intermediate of EA. This study demonstrates that the NTP + WS system is a green technology for removing odorous VOCs.

Abstract:Cooking fumes (CFs) pose a considerable threat to the atmospheric environment and health, thus requiring appropriate mitigation measures. In this study, a nonthermal plasma (NTP) method based on a glass-bead-packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was used to remove CFs. The results revealed that the introduction of glass beads into the DBD reactor considerably enhanced the electrical field, resulting in the marked improvement of the removal of CFs. At a discharge power of 7.4 W, the removal efficiencies of CFs, nonmethane hydrocarbons, and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 10 µm (PM10) reached 89.5%, 98%, and 79%, respectively. Moreover, a high COx yield of 25.3% and an energy yield of COx of 41.19 g·kWh−1 were achieved due to the oxidation of carbon-containing compounds. The use of air as the carrier gas resulted in the more efficient removal of CFs compared with the use of nitrogen because of the oxidation effect of active oxygen-containing species derived from the dissociation of oxygen molecules. The performance of the glass-bead-packed-bed DBD reactor was positively correlated with discharge power. Furthermore, on the basis of the identification of byproducts, a reaction pathway underlying the NTP removal of CFs was proposed. The main carbon-containing compounds identified in CFs were esters, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones, and S/Cl-containing compounds, which underwent destruction through a series of dissociation and oxidation reactions, forming CO2 and H2O in the plasma region. This study provides evidence for the use of NTP as an innovative technology for the highly efficient removal of CFs.
