Abstract:High biological toxicity, low reused efficiency, serious pollution, complex treatment process and high treatment cost were the typical characteristics of copper wastewater. The summary revealed advanced progress in treatment and resource utilization of copper containing wastewater. For summarizing features, advantages and disadvantages of various methods, the review analyzed precipitation, adsorption, electrochemistry, wet oxidation-reduction, ion exchange and Fe/C micro electrolysis. It pointed out that the scheme of integration of special combination processes with resource utilization was the key development direction.

Abstract:Industrial and remedial processes produce wastewater containing chelated heavy metal. Chelated heavy metal containing wastewater needs to be treated not only for the toxic heavy metal, but also for the chelating agent. The treatment of strong stability chelated heavy metal wastewater is a hot and difficult issue in these years. To solve this problem, a novel strategy, advanced Fenton-chemical precipitation process (AF-CPP) is proposed to address chelated heavy metal containing wastewater. The process uses zero-valent iron and hydrogen peroxide for degrading the chelated compound, followed by alkali precipitation of heavy metal. NiEDTA was selected as a model of strong stability of chelated heavy metal pollutant. This process can remove not only nickel ions, but also reduces COD values. Parameters affecting nickel removal are discussed. At optimum condition, the nickel removal efficiency attained was 98.4% and the residual concentrations of nickel fell below the value stipulated in Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard of China (GB8978-1996). AF-CPP appears promising and effective for the treatment of strong stability chelated heavy metal containing wastewaters.

Abstract:An efficient combined advanced treatment method of electroplating wastewater is disclosed, which belongs to the technical field of electroplating wastewater treatment. The method includes: after pretreatments including cyanide breaking, dechromization and coagulating sedimentation, introducing the electroplating wastewater to a contact oxidation tank for biochemical treatment, and settling the effluent from the contact oxidation tank down in an inclined pipe of a secondary sedimentation tank to realize the separation of the sludge from water; charging the effluent to a coagulating sedimentation tank, and undergoing coagulating sedimentation with the aid of a flocculant and a coagulant aid added; feeding the effluent, as an influent, to a resin adsorption tank for adsorption with a magnetic resin; and after passing through a filter, flowing the effluent after adsorption to a fixed bed resin adsorption unit, so as to realize the discharge up to standard and recycle of the effluent.

Abstract:The rapid development of industry has led to the generation of a large amount of electroplating wastewater. The direct discharge of untreated electroplating wastewater may lead to the formation of toxic metal-organic complexes, which is a challenging problem for human health and the living environment of organisms. Due to the high solubility of heavy metals in aquatic environments and their easy absorption by organisms, effective treatment of electroplating wastewater is of great significance. The ultimate goal of electroplating wastewater treatment should be to recover metals and water from electroplating wastewater. In indoor experiments, pilot tests, and industrial applications of electroplating wastewater treatment, membrane treatment technology commonly used in wastewater terminal treatment has attracted great attention. Membrane treatment technology seems to be the most promising method for removing heavy metals and organic pollutants from electroplating wastewater. This article reviews the membrane treatment technologies for electroplating wastewater, introduces the advantages and disadvantages of various membranes in the treatment of electroplating wastewater, the removal efficiency of pollutant types, and their comparison. The focus is on the treatment effects of nano-filtration membrane, ultra-filtration membrane, micro-filtration membrane, reverse osmosis membrane, ceramic membrane, biofilm, etc., on electroplating wastewater. Compared with a single treatment method, the combination of different processes shows higher efficiency in removing various pollutants.

Abstract:The widespread use of copper in various industries leads to a wide range of copper-containing wastewater (CCW) sources, which cause varying degrees of damage to humans, animals, plants, and the environment. To realize sustainable societal development, the treatment of wastewater before discharge is very important. By searching for as many articles as possible about CCW in recent years and synthesizing the contained information, this paper reviews conventional treatment methods for CCW, including chemical methods (chemical precipitation, replacement, flotation, and electrolysis) and physicochemical methods (membrane treatment, ion exchange, adsorption, and solvent extraction). The concepts/mechanisms relevant to these treatment methods, as well as the applications, advances, advantages and disadvantages of each technology, are summarized, and methods of improving each processing technique are summarized in the corresponding section. After improvement, most of these technologies can achieve better wastewater treatment results. Then, the main factors influencing the effectiveness of each process are summarized. However, single treatment technologies often have problems such as high energy consumption, secondary pollution, and a poor treatment effect when treating real wastewater. Existing articles have reported that the combination of various treatment units to form wastewater treatment systems has advantages: environmental friendliness, low cost, good copper recovery, almost complete removal of copper in wastewater, and a lower effluent Cu2+ concentration. Finally, this paper discusses six kinds of combined technologies for the treatment of CCW. The advantages of combined technologies compared with single treatment technologies suggest that the development of CCW treatment from single to diversified combined treatment modes is an inevitable trend and has strong significance and development prospects.

Abstract:Copper pollution of the world's water resources is becoming increasingly serious and poses a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. With reported copper concentrations in wastewater ranging from approximately 2.5 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L, a summary of remediation techniques for different contamination scenarios is essential. Therefore, it is important to develop low-cost, feasible, and sustainable wastewater removal technologies. Various methods for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater have been extensively studied in recent years. This paper reviews the current methods used to treat Cu(II)-containing wastewater and evaluates these technologies and their health effects. These technologies include membrane separation, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, electrochemistry, adsorption, and biotechnology. Thus, in this paper, we review the efforts and technological advances made so far in the pursuit of more efficient removal and recovery of Cu(II) from industrial wastewater and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each technology in terms of research prospects, technical bottlenecks, and application scenarios. Meanwhile, this study points out that achieving low health risk effluent through technology coupling is the focus of future research.

Abstract:Electroplating sludge is a product of the purification of the electroplating wastewater by neutralization or flocculation precipitation, which belongs to dangerous solid waste. In the study, copper, nickel, zinc and iron from electroplating sludge were recovered by an innovative sulfidation roasting-flotation-magnetic separation technology. The effects of the crucial parameters on the sulfidation ratio of copper and nickel and the volatilization ratio of zinc during the sulfidation roasting were investigated. Under the optimal condition of the sulfidation roasting, the volatilization ratio of zinc reached 78.10 % and the sulfidation ratios of copper and nickel were 88.55 % and 97.86 %, respectively. The migration rule of valuable metals in the roasting process were illustrated by XRD and SEM-EDS. By the flotation treatment for the roasting products, copper-nickel mixed concentrates containing copper 2.377 % and nickel 10.28 % were obtained, and the recoveries of copper and nickel reached 83.73 % and 85.00 %, respectively. After treatment by the flotation, magnetic separation was carried out to obtain iron concentrate with iron grade and recovery of 73.77 % and 12.41 %. Finally, the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure was employed to prove the excellent stability of the heavy metals in the tailing. The study realized the efficient, comprehensive recovery of copper, nickel, zinc and iron from electroplating sludge, and provided a new idea for the harmless and resource utilization of electroplating sludge.

Abstract:A combined advanced treatment technology of'biological contact oxidation + magnetic resins + chelate resins' based on resins adsorption was employed to treat electroplating wastewater in a Jiangsu company.The practical operation results showed that,the effluent quality could reach the GB 21900-2008 Figure 3 standard and GB 3838-2002 Ⅲ class water standard,and the mass concentration of total Cu and Ni was less than 0.1mg/L,and COD was less than 20 mg/L.Meanwhile,the comprehensive toxicity ofwastewater could reach EPA833-B-94-002 toxicity limits requirements (chronic toxicity was less than 1TUc,and acute toxicity was less than 0.3TUa).

Abstract:Electroplating during chrome, nickel and copper production generates a large amount of wastewater, with plating wash water, plant wash water and equipment cooling and wash water comprising the main sources of wastewater. These wastewaters contain a variety of metal components, which causes the concentrations different. Metal ions can cause serious harm to humans, animals, plants and the environment; therefore, it is necessary to treat electroplating wastewater to remove these materials. Electroplating wastewater also contains a large number of complexes that are difficult to remove by simple precipitation. In this study, the iron reduction co-precipitation method was found to remove hexavalent chromium, decompose nickel and copper complexes and reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) well. The average chromium-nickel-copper ion concentration was stable at 0.1 ppm, while the COD was stable between 20 and 30 ppm, enabling rapid processing by one-time treatment to meet the emission standards of China.

Abstract:Electroplating wastewater contains heavy metal ions and organic matter. These contaminants not only endanger the environment but also pose risks to human health. Despite the development of various treatment processes such as chemical precipitation MBR, electrocoagulation (EC) ceramic membrane (CM), coagulation ultrafiltration (UF) reverse osmosis (RO), and CM RO. These methods are only effective for low concentrations of heavy metals and struggle with high concentrations. To address the challenge of treating electroplating wastewater with high heavy metal content, this study focuses on the wastewater from Dongfang Aviation Machinery Processing Plant. It introduces an EC and integrated membrane (IM) treatment process for electroplating wastewater. The IM comprises microfiltration (MF) membrane, nanofiltration (NF) membrane, and RO membrane. Results indicated that under specific conditions, such as a pH of 8, current density of 5 A/dm2, electrode plate spacing of 2 cm, 35 min of electrolysis time, and influent pH of 10 for the IM, removal rates of Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, and TCr in the wastewater exceeded 99%. The removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and petroleum in wastewater exceed 97%. Following a continuous cleaning process, the membrane flux can consistently recover to over 94.3%.

Abstract:In order to avoid the discharge of deplating wastewater with high concentration of NO3−, an environmental friendly process, consisting of precipitation, electrodeposition and oxidation, is developed in this research for the treatment of real high acidic deplating wastewater containing Ag+, Cu2+, NO3− and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The wastewater is treated by precipitation to remove Ag+, electrodeposition to remove Cu2+, oxidation to reduce COD successively and then reused for deplating plastic plated parts. In precipitation process, 99.9% Ag+ in wastewater is precipitated by HCl and silver metal is then recovered through the replacement of AgCl by iron powder. Because of the high conductivity, Cu2+ in wastewater is then separated and recovered as copper metal on cathode through electrodeposition. The effect of electrodeposition parameters including cathode material, current density, electrode distance, reaction temperature and Cu2+ initial concentration is investigated. Up to 89.3% Cu2+ can be recovered in 80 min at the optimal condition. Finally, the COD is removed from 1360 mg L−1 to 378 mg L−1 in subsequent H2O2 oxidation process to ensure the reuse of water. Because the valuable Ag and Cu metals are recovered and the COD is removed, the wastewater can be reused as deplating solution. The estimated profit of this precipitation-electrodeposition-oxidation process reveals its practical feasibility. Furthermore, the process realizes the cleaner production of the deplating technology because it avoids the discharge of unmanageable wastewater with high NO3− concentration. More importantly, the process can also be improved to treat similar wastewater.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment for heavy metals is currently transitioning from pollution remediation towards resource recovery. As a controllable and environment-friendly method, electrochemical technologies have recently gained significant attention. However, there is a lack of systematic and goal oriented summarize of electrochemical metal recovery techniques, which has inhibited the optimized application of these methods. This review aims at recent advances in electrochemical metal recovery techniques, by comparing different electrochemical recovery methods, attempts to target recycling heavy metal resources with minimize energy consumption, boost recovery efficiency and realize the commercial application. In this review, different electrochemical recovery methods (including E-adsorption recovery, E-oxidation recovery, E-reduction recovery, and E-precipitation recovery) for recovering heavy metals are introduced, followed an analysis of their corresponding mechanisms, influencing factors, and recovery efficiencies. In addition, the mass transfer efficiency can be promoted further through optimizing electrodes and reactors, and multiple technologies (photo-electrochemical and sono-electrochemical) could to be used synergistically improve recovery efficiencies. Finally, the most promising directions for electrochemical recovery of heavy metals are discussed along with the challenges and future opportunities of electrochemical technology in recycling heavy metals from wastewater.

Unlocking sustainable solutions: controlled Cu2+ dosing enables efficient recovery and reuse of high-purity copper pyrophosphate from electroplating wastewater

Abstract:The electroplating process of copper pyrophosphate (Cu2P2O7) results in the production of a large volume of wastewater that contains a high concentration of copper (Cu). Currently, conventional lime precipitation creates a substantial amount of secondary pollution, which adds extra economic and environmental burdens. In this study, we suggest a straightforward method for on-site recovery of Cu from Cu2P2O7 electroplating wastewater. By optimizing various parameters, characterizing the resulting product, assessing its electroplating capabilities, and analyzing the speciation during the reaction, we comprehensively investigated the feasibility and mechanism of this technique. The results demonstrated that, under the optimal conditions (Cu/P molar ratio of 0.96, pH of 5.0, and a reaction time of 5.0 min), the concentration of residual Cu remained stable between 22.2 and 27.7 mg/L, even when the initial Cu concentrations varied. The addition of Cu triggered a series of hydrolysis and ionization reactions, primarily leading to the formation of Cu2P2O7·3H2O. The harvested Cu2P2O7·3H2O proved to be suitable for practical electroplating applications, exhibiting comparable performance to commercially available Cu2P2O7·3H2O. This demonstrates the feasibility of recovering high-purity Cu2P2O7·3H2O from copper electroplating wastewater, offering a promising approach for on-site copper reuse and concurrently reducing the demand for natural copper resources. Furthermore, this approach significantly reduces the generation of solid waste, aligning with the principles of sustainable development.

Abstract:Electroplating wastewater rich in metal ions and acids has dual attributes of real environmental pollutant and potential resource carrier. Targeting resource recovery and up-to-standard discharge from electroplating wastewater treatment in this study, a hybrid process of stepwise alkalization, Fenton, and chlorination was proposed to treat real electroplating wastewater from Guangzhou, China, where pH was 1.1 and Ag, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, P, F, chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH 3 -N was 624.9, 11266.9, 914.7, 1169.6, 13.8, 1971, 8750.8, 7433.1, 382.3, 451.3 mg/L, respectively. Pollutants removal from liquid phase and precipitates composition were systematically investigated during stepwise alkalization via pH control, showing that first adding NaOH to pH of 3 produced high-purity (98.4 %) Fe(PO 3 ) 3 precipitates suitable for high value-added resource recovery, second adding Ca(OH) 2 to pH of 9 achieved high pollutants removal (especially F and P) and cost savings, and centrifugation with 2000 g and 10 min was appropriate for precipitates separation. Aiming at COD and chelated/complexed Ni removal from treated electroplating wastewater by stepwise alkalization, the optimal parameters for Fenton process in this study were determined as the initial pH of 3, mass ratio of H 2 O 2 to COD of 2.0, molar ratio of Fe 2+ to H 2 O 2 of 1.11, and reaction time of 2 h, under which all pollutants except NH 3 -N met the discharge standards in Guangdong Province, China (DB 44/1597-2015), where the maximum concentration of Ag, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, P, F, COD, NH 3 -N was set as 0.1, 2, 0.5, 0.5, 1, 0.5, 1, 10, 80, 15 mg/L, respectively. Further chlorination treatment via adding NaClO for NH 3 -N removal showed that the optimal molar ratio of NaClO to NH 3 -N was 2.89 and the optimal reaction time was 90 min in this study, under which NH 3 -N removal followed first-order reaction kinetics with rate constant of 0.01831 min −1 , NH 3 -N decreased to 12.6 mg/L satisfying the discharge standard, and COD was simultaneously reduced to 26.7 mg/L. These findings demonstrate the proposed hybrid process of stepwise alkalization, Fenton, and chlorination is promising for electroplating wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

Abstract:Treatment of an acid electroplating wastewater was performed by an electrocoagulation process firstly. Effect of current density and treatment time on the removal of total cyanide, heavy metals and COD was investigated. The results showed that total cyanide and heavy metals can be efficiently removed by the electrocoagulation process, which increased with the current density. At a current density of 10 mA/cm2, the residual total cyanide, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cr6+ and Zn2+ were 23.0, 25.0, 4.5, 0.2 and 0.2 mg/L, respectively. Removal of COD by electrocoagulation process was limited. With addition of H2O2 to electrochemical system, the removal efficiency of the total cyanide and heavy metal and COD increased. With a H2O2 dose of 3 mL/L, the residual total cyanide, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cr6+, Zn2+ and COD were 0.2, 2.0, 3.0, 1.5, 0.1 and 220 mg/L, respectively.

Abstract:Water used by mining enterprises needs to be comprehensively recovered and utilized to achieve clean production. This requires the effective treatment of mineral processing wastewater. Wastewater produced during non-ferrous metal mineral processing contains a complex mixture of pollutants at high concentrations, making comprehensive treatment difficult. Here, the sources of and hazards posed by wastewater produced during non-ferrous metal mineral processing are introduced and the techniques for removing heavy metal ions and organic chemicals are reviewed. Chemical precipitation and adsorption methods are often used to remove heavy metal ions. Chemical precipitation methods can be divided into hydroxide and sulfide precipitation methods. Organic chemicals are mainly removed using oxidation methods, including electrochemical oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, and ultrasonic synergistic oxidation. External and internal cyclic utilization methods for treating wastewater produced by mineral processing plants are introduced, and a feasibility analysis is performed.
