Abstract:Objective To essay the safety and density of expandable hydrogel spring coil for intracranial aneurysms. Methods Twenty-six patients with 30 intracranial aneurysms were treated with endovascular coiling for embolization of aneurysm, in which hydrogel coil was used in 27 aneurysms. Twenty-three aneurysms with subarachnoid hemorrhage were made up of 7 Hunt-Hess grade I, 10 grade Ⅱ, 5 grade Ⅲand 1 grade Ⅳ. The maximal diameter of aneurysms ranged from 3.7 to 18 mm, with an average of ( 8.6±3.6)mm. Results Complete occlusion was achieved in 21 aneurysms, neck remnant in 5 and partial embolism in 1. The embolic material/aneurysm volume ratio ranged from 19% to 154%, with an average of (67.6±32.3)%. Temporary contralateral hemiplegia occurred in 2 cases. 1 patient died of severe vasospasm and intracranial infection after ventricular drainage. Conclusion To treat intracranial aneurysms with expandable hydrogel spring coils is safe and effective and could also increase the packing density. However, whether hydrogel spring coil can reduce recurrence depend on long-term angiographic follow-up.
